    Patio by Senon's Masonry
    Lee M.

Since we moved into our house in S. Austin, we had limped along with no outdoor living space for 3 years. We were limited to only a small 12'x15' concrete slab as a back porch - barely enough to contain my BBQ pit and gas grill. As a family, we enjoy the outdoors...A LOT - but 2011 is the year we finally got the outdoor living space we deserved. I was referred to Senon's Masonry by some neighbors that had some rock work done. I liked the work, but wanted to see more. After contacting Senon Castelan, he took me to 3 more jobs he recenty completed, and the quality of the work looked quite good. After quoting 3 other contractors, I decided to go with Senon to execute the ambitious plan I designed. The more I talked with Senon about the design, the options, and how I could stay within my budget - the more impressed I became. While my 2D design was 'directionally correct', Senon demonstrated the vision needed to bring this design to life. In 3D. In stone. Within code. He made many practical suggestions on materials, proportions, and usability that enhanced design. Senon impressed us with his design acumen, his attention to detail and quality, and his communication. Due to VERY COLD weather, our job s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d out longer than both of us wanted. Senon made a point to cal me on a regular basis to ensure that we were BOTH happy and informed ("We'll be there tomorrow AM" - or "Here is what you can expect"). He demonstrated one of the best communication skills of any contractor I have ever worked with. In addition, he is an Austinite born and bred = Bowie HS grad in fact! Throughout the job, and he demanded that the work site was both safe AND clean at the end of each day. All of this was provided at a fair price that I felt was a good value compared to others. In summary, great design + great execution + great quality + great value = The back yard of our dreams!! Thanks to Senon's Masonry!

    Before and After - planters

This was our 2nd time working with Senon. The brick planters around our front trees were falling apart after 20 years, and we wanted something more contemporary. We discussed some design ideas, and agreed on a stained concrete design. The end result looks great. Senon has good design ideas, and goes really nice work. We're happy with his work and the finished product. I'll post a couple of pics showing before and after.

    BEFORE

Senon and his crew did great work replacing my old rotten retaining wall with a limestone masonry wall. The new wall looks great! They were flexible with the scope of work and had good ideas when I wanted to add a few items, like a gravel walkway and masonry around a flower bed. I got several quotes beforehand. Senon's price was very reasonable and they did good, professional looking work.

Very efficient and responsive, plus offered a fair price. Great contractor. ( work in progress )

We just finished a project in the backyard. After interviewing several contractors we went with Senon's. They gave us the best rate on a slab. I believe Yelp is an excellent medium to read reviews because you can see many options and photos. Here are a few positives and negatives about our experience to help you make your decision. Positive: the owner is always in contact with you, he always returns phone calls, he always will text back, his crew is very respectful, the crew always cleaned up, no mess was left at the end of the project, it was easy to show him pictures of what you had in mind, pricing on most items was fair, he corrected mistakes on flower box and border. Negatives: he offered to do a stain on our slab for free and patch corner of foundation for free. I asked him to give me a quote on how much it would be so we could decide and was told if there were extra materials he would do it for free. We said ok. At the end of the project the only two issues with that is we were billed for 9 slabs of stone and received 8. Don't know where our other stone is and don't expect to get it. We were billed for tree stump removal and it was left on our property. We were told our slab would be poured with a concrete truck. We wanted this to avoid issues. The day the slab was poured it was done by hand. We were never told until we asked what happened to the concrete truck. This should have been communicated so we could have hired another contractor for slab. Several issues with materials not being in on day scheduled to work which caused project to take longer and having to make corrections. I have included photos of stucco/sealer that had problems that we addressed and he did come back and fix. We had a problem with our slab having uneven spots and he did come back and pour another layer. There was a black stain after second layer that luckily we could hid with our stain. There are still imperfections on the top layer but at this point we will correct it down the road. I would highly recommend only having a slab poured by a truck and confirm the truck 2 days before. I would also recommend doing any work yourself to save time and money. If I had to do it over again, I would have filled the second planter box with dirt myself and bought the topsoil myself. To help the crew along I spent a Sat filling one planter box with topsoil, plants, and gravel myself. Also, sub out your tree stump removal yourself or rent machine and do yourself. Another area could have saved time and money. We hired Ramirez Landscaping to remove three tree stumps after the hurricane for $200. Much cheaper than the one stump we had Senon's remove and Ramirez came two days after we called. If you want concrete flower boxes are border, they did a great job and we are happy with the work. If you need a slab, I would go another route unless they guarantee a truck. Even though he did the stain and foundation for free, we didn't know that would mean two other items we paid for would be taken care of because of the free items. So if someone says they will "throw it in" say no thanks and sub out. Senon's-great at getting in touch with you, great at doing planter boxes and borders, walk way was exactly what we wanted and looks great, need to improve slab work and lining up materials. Foundation patch job was what we needed. Circles show what we wanted fixed on planters and he did come back and fix. Unstained picture issue on slab that we could cover with stain color. Issues with retaining wall not sealed in time, fix down road. Issues with slab imperfections, fix down the road. Picture of foundation repair.

They handled the full transformation: Texas native plants, fresh sod, irrigation, lighting, a new patio with poured concrete pavers, a pergola, and decking built around our above-ground pool. The result feels intentional, cohesive, and well suited to both the climate and how we use the space. We worked with their designers to develop the plan, and that process was smooth and collaborative. They listened, had good instincts, and were happy to iterate with us until the design felt right. From first contact to breaking ground took about three months, which felt reasonable given the scope. Once construction started, everything moved fast--the entire project was completed around two to three weeks. Most importantly, we're extremely happy with the outcome. The yard is beautiful and dramatically more usable than before. Jason and Nikk were a pleasure to work with throughout: friendly, proactive, communicative, with good taste and a strong sense for design. I'd happily recommend them to anyone looking to upgrade their outdoor space.

While all the companies, including Southern Landscaping and Design, were nice and responsive, I feel the need to share our experience regarding their pricing. The quotes we received from the first three companies ranged between $9,000 and $11,000, which seemed reasonable for the scope of work. However, Southern Landscaping and Design came back with a quote of just over $28,000--nearly three times the amount of the other bids. I'm sure they do great work, but this level of pricing feels excessive and difficult to justify. I wanted to share this as a heads-up for anyone considering them. It's always worth getting multiple quotes to ensure you're paying a fair price.

He's always quick to respond, enthusiastic about the projects, and takes a real pride in his work and making sure things are done in a way that will last. We did a complete backyard overhaul and transformed it from a bare mud pit to a backyard oasis that we now love spending time in now: new sod on half the hard, paver patio and crushed granite on the other half, limestone retaining wall and mulch bed on the back wall, drainage, and irrigation through out. We had an old and non functioning irrigation system that we inherited from the previous owners and rather than just ripping it up and charging us for a new one, Aaron spent hours servicing and getting it to work, and then customized it to work with the new yard layout. We also had some freak of nature downpour of rain pretty soon after the big project was complete, which washed away some of the granite and caused the patio to settle with some dips. Aaron came back and fixed it all and added in additional drainage to keep it from happening again. Aaron is my guy forever now - extremely fair on pricing, honest, full of integrity, thorough, and just an all around nice guy. You won't be disappointed if you choose to work with him.

From the first meeting, he was professional and took the project seriously. He started with a drone photo overhead and created a design with our architect's plan. Travis worked with us to design a drought-tolerant landscape with a combination of astroturf and xeriscape, as well as limestone paver walkways with black granite and black steel edging to go with the aesthetics of our modern ranch. Our third party inspector noted that many landscape companies do not weld the steel edging to the stakes, but Travis's crew welded all of the connections and the steel seems thicker than what we had at our previous home. We chose Thrive because of other Google reviews combined with our interactions with Travis during the quote and design process. I did a lot of research on artificial turf companies servicing the Brushy Creek area and after some shopping around, came across Umesh and KG Lawn Care. After receiving some ridiculous quotes from some of the "bigger" artificial turf companies, offering a lower grade of turf for a substantially higher price, I went forward with the project with Umesh and KG Lawn Care. Umesh took on my project of installing approximately 1000 sqft of artificial turf, metal edging, and black star gravel around some cypress trees. Roughly a month before starting, I expressed to Umesh my desire to have the project completed in time for our family's annual crawfish boil, which he assured me he would fulfill. I can't say enough positive things about Umesh, Lucas, and their crew. As we neared the date of my family's party, Umesh assured me that he would push to make the deadline, even with unpredictable central Texas weather. Umesh not only kept to his promise in finishing the project in time for our party, but also knocked it out of the park! The artificial turf looks incredible and instantly became my daughter's favorite place to play. Umesh and his crew put a level of detail into the project in ensuring every aspect was perfect for my family. As pleased as I am with the project itself, the most noteworthy aspect I want to highlight in this review is how Umesh does business. In a world where so many are looking to cut corners, charge more, and provide less, I found that Umesh is a man of immense integrity who keeps to his word. Umesh delivered on his promise to ensure my yard was immaculate for my family's party, but most notably, his promise on pricing. A day before our turf was set to be installed, Umesh was notified by the turf company that the turf we picked out was no longer available (with zero warning). Umesh was forced to upgrade the turf at a difference of nearly $800. I offered to split the difference with Umesh but was told: "Nah man, it's all good. I like to keep my word and pricing. It's not your fault." This really struck me that Umesh was willing to eat $800 in order to keep his word with me on pricing. KG Lawn Care exceeded my expectations and truly helped me complete my dream back yard - The quality of work and character of Umesh will have me recommending him and his company to all my family and friends!

Waited over 24 hours for any feedback before I texted him again regarding schedule. Received text back that rain on Sunday "was a killer" and requested moving job to following week. Agreed if he would guarantee job would start on the 20th. He agreed and said would arrive 9-10am. After no arrival or contact on the 20th, texted at 10:20a asking ETA. Rec'd text back "No way today...too wet. Will dump trailer and be ready tomorrow. Dump site is soaked". Had rained previous night but areas in scope of work were easily accessible. Umesh texted would arrive "10ish" Thursday, 5/21. Received text at 5:43am on 5/21 that he needed "to reschedule wasn't able to dump trailers. Rain is about to kill us". I texted back that we had not received any further rain and he would need to call me to reschedule. Received text back requesting to start Monday it was a "bad week too. Everybody needs off with school ending". After reminding him that Monday was Memorial Day, Umesh replied to start Tuesday. I reiterated that if our job was not started Tuesday and completed by Wednesday, he would need to cancel job and refund deposit. Received text from Umesh this morning (5/26) at 7:30a that he would have to refund deposit "don't have help today. Got backed up". Supposed my refund will be credited to original form of payment within 2 days. We'll see if he follows thru on this since it appears his word means nothing and he only says what he thinks the customer wants to hear at a given moment. Very disappointed in his lack of business ethics, communication and follow thru as we were originally very happy with the work he did for us last year. Would definitely NO LONGER RECOMMEND KG Lawn (or now ATX Outdoor Upgrades).

They quickly replied through Yelp once I sent them a message and the estimator was here in a couple of days for an estimate and to provide guidance. He was very helpful in making the decisions we choose. We pretty much revamped our entire landscape. New Sod, removal of old sod and installation of zero scape/natural flat stones/gravel. Replanted all the beds, reworked sprinkler system and a massive trim out of existing shrubs and the sort. Not inexpensive, however they were still less expensive then another service, who suggested such things as a French drain, which really didn't make sense and came in a couple grand higher. The crew were numerous and were on time, courteous and knocked out the project in only a few days. One slight slip was the sod was not available on the last day, so we skipped a day and had the job completed the day after. It still was in the time frame they informed us on to begin with and let us know the day before the sod was to be installed. The result of their hard work will be truly noticed when the new plantings take hold. We have been fortunate with having several days of rain and cool weather. A couple of weeks in the sod has taken hold and none of the plantings have died and are all perking up from the transplanting experience. We are very happy with the results and the ease of working with PRT from start to finish.
