I've been on quite a nail journey to find a shop that not only does hard gels but that also does beautiful and quality work without compromising the health of my nails. So glad I came to Sense! I think this was the first time that I've left a nail salon with nails looking BETTER than the picture of a design that I brought in. I have Daniella to thank for that! (Thanks girl!) After neglecting my feet during winter, I knew it was time. It was time to make an appointment for a pedicure and I settled here for my first foray into foot care! They have easy online scheduling here or you can call for an appointment. My online appointment was confirmed the next business day. With my confirmation, I received a message about sending along any nail art I might be interesting in having done on my toes. I appreciated that even though I don't do nail art. I arrived to the spa and was greeted warmly by Robert at the front desk. Amber was my nail technician and she showed me back to the luxurious pedicure area. There was a long padded bench with throw pillows and three foot basins with jets. The water was already drawn in my basin and I was the only one getting a service that day so we had the whole back to ourselves. I chose the hour-long Spa pedicure which included: - Trim and shape nails - Cuticle buffing with rose oil application - Exfoliation - Nail strengthening base coat - Two coats of polish plus top coat - Massage - Callus work with foot file - Hydrating mask with hot towels - Chocolate/seasonal scrub upgrades From start to finish, Amber was friendly and professional. She took excellent care of my sorely neglected feet. I kept apologising for how awful they looked and she shrugged it off, assuring me that she had seen worse. I appreciated the reassurance. Toward the end of my service, Amber was called away to do some complex nail art. Our time had run long because we were chatty and June took over the remaining massage and polish application. I enjoyed my service so much that I've already made another pedicure appointment to see Amber again so I can keep those calluses at bay! Music was unobtrusive and thankfully not new agey. Parking was easy and directly in front of the building. It is important to mention that the building is not accessible to those who cannot ascend 5-6 exterior stairs. Very disappointing experience. First of all, the salon is tiny and doesn't have massage chairs for pedicures. The areas are separated by a very thin wall and you can hear every word of conversation coming from the other side. The people next to me (including the nail technician) talked/screamed loudly, cursed and talked about explicit sexual encounters the entire time I was there. I could hear the nail tech say "there's a client next to us, should we tone it down"? Then laughed and continued the foul language. Now the actual pedicure. It was WAY overpriced. I was even charged to remove the gel polish I currently had. I got the more expensive pedicure because I was told there would be an extra massage/mask. This was not the case. My feet were barely filed and were almost as rough as when I entered. Plus the lady doing my nails kept trying to sell me different services. Trying to keep this review short and sweet and not make it a PhD dissertation but bottom line...their phone system is always down so you can hardly get a human on the phone and when I did the employee front desk gal had to use her personal cell to answer the call and the reception was bad so I could barely hear her, this went on for weeks. The owners are brother/sister and they have horrible customer service, they don't communicate with one another, they having staffing issues and they are not accommodating and should stop accepting new clients for nail enhancements. July 10th I got a full set on a whim as they had a last minute no show and were able to get me in. The service from the nail tech was decent but the tricky part is they convince you to sign up with their membership to save you money at a monthly fee that is deducted from your credit card yet they don't have the staff to guarantee you can get an appointment every 2 weeks for fills. They tell you they'll put you on a wait list and call you if something comes up. I don't think most people can just drop what they are doing to take a nail appointment last minute and I know I can't. So now what!? I have these new gel nails and you're telling me you can't get me in for 4 weeks!? I had it out with the the male owner (brother) who shouldn't be handling customers at all, zero empathy since I'm sure he doesn't know what it's like to have grow out and that other people will see this...Oh ya forgot to mention I'm in the cosmetology industries for 27 years so I know when I get stellar or even great service. I worked at one of the leading day spas before becoming self employed 15 years ago. I know how Yelp reviews can help or hurt a business but I'll tell you the honest truth this place is worse than any chop shop out there. The brother sent me an email after I requested a comp'd polish change because I got a fill and the gal took 1.25 hours and I had no time to get polish I told them I had another appointment, then I re book for a polish change a week after and had to shellac my own nails at home until that appointment and then their "new" tech took 1.25 hours to get my shellac off! I can get it off at home in under 20 minutes! Then I find out she's new and doesn't speak English! Honestly the whole situation is one huge hot mess and I'm the one who gets fired? Oh right the brother sent me an email saying it wasn't a good fit...are you kidding me? Now it's my fault you can't get your act together? Hey brother why don't you go to beauty school and learn how to do nails and get your butt in the chair instead of thinking you know how to run a company! Better yet why don't you let Tomiko be the mouth piece for your business since she's the only one on the admin side who seems to know what customer service is! I've not only shared this with my clients and they now know to stay away from this place, but 4 of these clients referred me to a different place in Lake City who welcomed me and were able to get me in for my fills. This industry is very small and when one business owner can't be kind or understanding with another business owner in the area that is now a client that ought to tell you something! No shade on the nail techs, they may be new or still learning how to get their times up but at least they were nice and without nail techs you have no business. read more

It's obvious by the photos and reviews that Sense focuses on gel nail manicures, art and other gel services. I would advise that if you want just a regular manicure or to remove a hard gel set, to NOT go near here. A few weeks ago, I got a hard gel manicure from an amazing boutique shop in the north end. I quickly learned that long, artificial nails weren't for me, but unfortunately, they book up fast and their hours were limited so I had to find somewhere else to get them removed quicker. I got online to do some searching for seemingly quality salons that knew about hard gels. Enter: Sense. I tried to book an appointment online with a technician that multiple people seemed to really like based on reviews. I've had bad luck with nail shops so I tried to do as much research ad possible. Sense seemed perfect, and I was excited to potentially have a nail shop I actually like. When I realized I booked the wrong type of service and contacted them to get it changed, they changed my technician to June. I really wanted someone I had heard good things about, but I also understand that different types of services take longer than others, so I would deal with it. Everyone seems to love Sense so it couldn't be that bad, right? When I arrived, I was first taken aback by how cramped the front nail area was. All the ambiance must be in the back with the pedicure stations. While Robert was friendly and professional, I couldn't say the same for every technician that was working (but that's another can of worms). I told my nail technician twice that there were no acrylic nails or tips underneath - gel only. I still had to remind her again as she began filing, looking for a tip. She eventually got out the nail clippers to clip the long parts off, and was kind of haphazard with it. Some of the clipping would hurt, but the worst was watching the gel fly all over the salon - I looked down at one point to see I even had some gel remnants on myself. It was kind of embarrassing in that small of a space seeing something that just had been sitting on my nails now on the floor in the waiting space. She continued to do a combination of filing and acetone until my nails were filed down. Most of her tools looked like she had either used them before on other people (hand file) and I had no indication that any of the other tools she used were sanitized before using them on me. I did notice she used acetone to clean my gel color off her tools, but I don't know if that's a proper sanitation technique. She also cut my cuticles, which is a no-no to me. I understand some people accept or like it done, but I would ask before you start cutting up someones cuticles. She asked if I wanted a manicure with polish after the removal before we started and I said yes. The manicure, like the removal, was very rushed and to dry my nails, she put my hands in a dryer with heat. In my experience, heat is not the best tool to dry regular polish with, because it takes forever to fully set. She got up and walked away without a word and I sat there for over 20 minutes wondering if it was up to me when I left or not. After close to 30 minutes, and after Robert had returned to the front desk after a long while, I decided to get up and go because it didn't seem like she was coming back and I just wanted to get out. I paid, and went on my way. It wasn't the best experience, but at least my nails were back to normal length. When I got home, I noticed one of my nails already had polish smudged from not fully drying. I also noticed once I was home that bubbles had formed on almost every one of my nails and there was paint on my skin. During the manicure I remembered the method of getting excess paint off my fingers was digging a pointed orange wood stick into my skin and scraping it off (ow!!), and after all that, there was still polish? I was emailed after my appointment asking for my feedback and I gave it honestly. I didn't receive any comments back about the service. If I were a business owner, I'd want to know all the information and try to make it right instead of ignoring it. The last straw was when I went to remove the polish last night, I realized there was STILL hard gel chips left on my most of my fingers! Totally unacceptable! I was given a discount since it was my first time there, but I still don't even think the discounted cost makes up for the fact that I didn't get a FULL removal or what I would consider a professional manicure. For the cost of their services (does anyone really know what they are since they aren't listed anywhere?), you might be better off going to Gene Juarez or some other higher end salon where you know you'll feel more comfortable and treated well. read more

I had what sounds like a common experience: I came here on an online deal, the female owner got confused, my opinion of the place soured, I'm unlikely to go back despite really great nail art work from Amber. The thing is, before I ever found myself buying a Groupon, I had decided to come to Sense and be a member already. I even called to what the membership included to see if I shouldn't even bother with the Groupon. The original idea behind Groupon was to introduce customers to local businesses and get them to come back. Now Groupon customers are thought of as a liability. My Groupon was for a full set of gels and custom nail art. I got a full set from Victoria (with tips) and ten hand painted nails from Amber (all evil eyes - incredibly detailed miniatures that make people gasp and ask to see my nails). I did it in two sittings when Victoria ran out of time. I didn't mind that much, liked the space and signed up for the monthly account there. I was obviously not just a Groupon hit and run. Not 48 hours later, I came back and they asked me to pay for the second sitting of nail art they hadn't finished when I came to use my Groupon. I'd now spent 4 hours there on this manicure. They were claiming this manicure cost $130, btw. What. $70 for gels. $60 for 10 fingers of freestyle nail art. That is nuts. Because of the grim, run down space with rotting steps, it wasn't accessible. I'm going to try somewhere else that's more pleasant and where they want my business. The manager called to refund my money and said he was sorry I had to be embarrassed. I wasn't embarrassed at all. read more

After spending years going to local "chop shops" in Shoreline, I learned about Sense' about 4 years ago from a woman who used to work there. This is indeed a hidden treasure!! Nestled into a residential neighborhood off of 15th NE and 145th, this is not your average "nail salon!" This is indeed a SPA!! The pedicure room alone is worth a trip! It is the cleanest nail business I have ever seen! The staff is friendly, well trained, and happy to offer suggestions if you are not sure what you want. **For the moment, I'm only reviewing Sense's waxing services, but I hope to edit this post with a review of their nail services soon.** I love: -That Sense took a same-day appointment at six and didn't make me feel like an ass for asking for it. -That they're in the north end, which sorely needs a great nail and wax salon. -That they're opening a location downtown, in the Convention Center. -That they were welcoming, friendly, and conscientious of my needs from the moment I walked in the door (fifteen minutes early). -That even though the wax wasn't hot enough (because I was early) my waxing lady brought me into a quiet room, laid a warm blanket over me, and handed me a magazine so I could wait in comfort. -That little temple-massage I got at the end of my waxing - what a neat surprise! -The price: $15 is cheaper than most places, nowadays. -The finished product: my eyebrows aren't stick thin, are even, and make me smile. :) I don't love: -Parking: it's like navigating those lots in driver's ed - you don't think you'll ever be in a situation where you'll have to use that amount of dexterity, but Sense challenges you to do so. -That the wax didn't need to be THAT HOT. Holy crap. -That the wax was hot enough that I have a little rash above my right eyebrow (which was the first place she put the wax). Sense seems cramped when you walk in: the manicure area is off to the left, the front counter is just in front of you, and the small (yet comfy) waiting area is within arm's reach on the right. However, the serene-looking pedicure area is through a door on the right and gives a sense of seclusion, and the waxing room is further off of that. Sense uses the small space it has quite well! I'll definitely go back to Sense for a mani-pedi, as they seem quite competent and genuinely glad to be there. I'll also try another eyebrow wax, because my guess is that the too-hot wax was a one-time fluke. For now, four stars. read more

There is plenty of parking out front and in the back. The salon appears to be a house converted to a business. It can be a little tricky getting into and out of the parking lot onto the busy road. I was greeted by my manicurist and offered a drink. Then we sat down to have my polish removed. The seats are comfortable and the decor is pleasing. The receptionist put on some music and opened the windows because it was going to be a hot day. Unfortunately the road out front is very busy so the road noise was considerable. There were a considerable number of colors to choose from. My manicurist was thorough and took time to make sure I was satisfied. I was in and out in 1 hr. The Gelish manicure was 49.00. My best friend got married this past Sunday and as part of the wedding prep, I made her an appointment with the downtown Sense Nail Spa for acrylics. She is a recently reformed nail biter, so although her natural nails are nice, they are very short. She wanted to have "perfect" nails for the wedding so I made her an appointment to have acrylic nails put on a few days before the wedding- my treat. I made the appointment EIGHT days in advance and set it for two days before the wedding so that they'd look freshly done on the big day. The bride was scheduled for a 1pm appointment on a Friday afternoon for a full set of acrylics, for which I had prepaid via a Groupon gift certificate. Sense is not cheap, so I assumed the nails would look fantastic and the entire experience would be flawless. Imagine my surprise/embarrassment/anger when I called the bride to ask how her nails looked and was told that Sense had completely flaked on her! Turns out that when she went in for her appointment, they told her they didn't have anyone there that could do acrylic nails. WHAT???? Isn't this a NAIL SPA??? And hadn't I SPECIFICALLY scheduled her for a full set of acrylics?? No one bothered to call her (or me) to cancel the appointment in the 8 days between when it was scheduled and when it occurred. Instead, the bride wasted two hours of her day to drive downtown from her home in West Seattle only to be told she wouldn't be getting her nails done. Because we had intentionally scheduled the appointment so close to the wedding date, there was not time to make another appointment at a different nail salon, as we had a rehearsal/rehearsal dinner and wedding prep all day Saturday and wedding pictures starting at 9am on Sunday (the wedding day). So, the bride had very short, natural nails for the wedding. I called Sense and left a message explaining what had happened, and requested that a manager call me back. I wanted an explanation, a refund, and an apology for the bride. Well, it's been five days and they still haven't called me back. I would seriously never, EVER recommend this place to anyone. Fortunately, the bride is a beautiful lady regardless of how she wears her nails and fortunately, the awesome folks at Groupon refunded my money and apologized profusely for the incident. F-. I moved to WA about a year ago, and since then I have tried out about 8 different nail salons around Seattle. I was always disappointed by either bad service, crooked or ill fitting application, poorly trained technicians, lack of color/artwork options available, and the worst offender - toxic materials. I started searching for a high quality salon where I could trust that I would not only be treated with curtesy and professionalism, but that the products being used were safe and non-toxic. My search ended with Sense Nail Spa. Victoria did my nails, and I can honestly say I have never had a better manicure in my life. I am now a loyal client, and monthly subscriber and will not be trusting my digits to any other salon. I've been with my nail tech for two years before moving to the PNW and was a little anxious finding a new place. Through a lot of luck and persistence I found Sense and booked a fill and repair with Lori (I hope I am spelling your name right). She's a bamf, my nails are shiny and new again, and it's just like the busted nail never happened. The spa itself is is on the northwest corner of NE 145th st and 15th Ave NE (closer to 12th Ave NE) and can be easy to miss if you're not looking. There are spaces up front and there's also parking in the back. The spa is cute and comfortable, and also offers a membership for regular services. I first found this place in 2011 after visiting my hometown Honolulu, Hi gel nails are everywhere there and I was so afraid that I wouldn't find it here being in Seattle. Boy was I wrong. Cutting edge designs, only high quality products, and the nicest people. Prices are competitive and worth every penny other shops I have tried might be cheaper but don't come close they mix products saying its all the same yet there clearly is a difference. I wanted to try this place out based on Yelp reviews even though there were only 78 reviews based on the company being opened since the 90's. I was a little skeptical about it since if you are rated as the Best of Western Washington that you would think there would be more reviews than that. I tried to make an online appointment and their system seemed to be down and not working so I decided to call in instead. I was able to get in last Wednesday. The lady I spoke on the phone was mentioning that the service I was getting for a gel mani and pedi with removal would take about 2 hours. This is a timed appointment? I never heard of that. But like I said I wanted to give it a try. When I arrived for my appointment I did not realize it was a small looking house on the side from the main street. I had to call to make sure. I finally arrived and they had ample parking in the front and the back. I went inside and had to check in. The place was cute with nice decor. The pedi nail selection was not much of a variety. As I sat down, a lady named June was the one that did my pedi. She was nice. The thing I observed was that she really did not clean my toes and feet. Is that what express pedi is for $39?! She just trimmed my toes and massaged it with their special oil. I guess that is what you pay for is the oil. The end result of my toes was not perfect as how I experienced from other salons. It was an ok job to my opinion. Then when it finally came to my mani she placed cotton ball and foil to cover each of my nails. It was not done as thorough as she claimed that the gloves she was using was extra big. She said she uses a XS and she wore small gloves and waiting for new stock to come in. I can understand that as I noticed she was a little struggling with working with my nails. Again I made observations and she had to repeat applying nail remover for each of my nails like 5x as the nail color wasn't coming off. Then she had another gal do my nails since she really didn't know what color to apply to my nails. I showed a picture of the color I want from Pinterest. I guess there were some miscommunication going on and was replaced by another nail tech. Her name was Juni (pronounced Yuni). When I showed her what I wanted she told June that it was only gel nothing special meaning June could've done it herself. I was confused at this point. Juni was nice enough to finish off my nails. She seemed knowledgable at what she does. The only issue I have is that when I asked to cut my nails short I want them short since I type a lot and work with my hands a whole lot and don't like my nails long and don't like hearing my nails touching the keyboards. It was only filed down so little and I still can see my nails long. Also when the color was put in it was not filled all the way to end of my cuticle so there is a gap as if my nails had grown and the cuticles weren't clean. Overall experience I don't think I would go back to this salon again. For the removal of gel is $15 which I think is a ridiculous price just to remove when it was not even a well done job to do so. The two nail techs that took care of me were nice but that was about it. I know I can find another salon that would not charge that high of a price even for a stellar job. Sense is the place to go for great service and beautiful nails. The owner was lovely and took the time to get to know you as a person. This makes a huge difference considering most nail technicians just chat with their co-workers as they work on your hands or feet. The salon is also tastefully decorated, clean, and comfortable. I felt extremely pampered and would definitely be a repeat customer if it were closer to where I work and live. But I will be a customer for sure as soon as their Downtown location opens! The experience was so good... I can still write about it now even though my visit was over a year ago. read more
