I've noticed this store gets low reviews, but I've personally never had a bad experience here. I typically come here when I'm too lazy to go to Fashion Valley or I don't want to wait for an online order. This is a Sephora inside a JCPenny, so it's obviously going to be smaller, they're going to be limited on what they carry. I think some reviewers may have unrealistic expectations on that score. That being said, they usually have what I'm looking for. There was a time they were out of something I needed for a trip, it was a last minute item. The salesgirl called the Fashion Valley store for me though. I was able to get what I needed that morning and pack it for my evening flight! I also like that they always remember to ask if you're a beauty insider, because honestly I don't carry that card around anyway. They're always cool about looking me up though. And offering samples at the register and whatnot. I like shopping here. I'm not sure about other people's experiences, maybe I just get lucky when I go. read more

What was supposed to be a 2 minute transaction to check out resulted in about a 15 wait in line and didn't even get a smile or a "hello" because Johanna at the cash register was too busy chit chatting!!! I seriously stood in line until a few minutes before the mall was about to close until the same nice employee named Olivia (who assisted me earlier) opened another cash register right next to chatterbox Johanna to help me. Johanna obviously does NOT know anything about customer service and it shows! I am not looking to be her BFF but acknowledging your customers when they've been in line for 20 minutes will make a difference. In fact, she was so busy chit chatting that I was even able to take a picture and she didn't even notice! Horrible, horrible customer service (or lack thereof) but thank heavens Olivia was extremely nice, acknowledged, and assisted me when she noticed I wasn't going to get noticed by Johanna anytime in this decade. I have to say I was totally disappointed with this location. I know that this is inside of a JCP but it was so incredibly small and they barely had any product. I was looking for some eye shadow trios and maybe some eyebrow gel. I had previously looked online and knew I wanted my eyeshadow to be the Sephora brand but didn't have any ideas on brow gel. I figured I would look at the Sephora brand though because I didn't want to break the bank. As I walked around the shop area I was surprised to see that there really wasn't any Sephora products, just mostly the bigger brands and I did not want to pay for them. I was also sad to see that there really weren't any trios mostly just single colors or large palates. I quickly looked around the rest of the store to see what I could find for eyebrow gel but I couldn't really see anything for less than $20 so I opted to skip it. I have had a bunch of success at other Sephora's inside JCP's and I won't give up on that but I guess if I am at a mall where there is a Sephora, I will just go to that store. I got here as the store opened and got amazing service. The young lady was very helpful in setting me up with the cosmetics I was looking for. I needed mascara that didn't flake into my eyeballs and a wine-colored lipstick (as seen in mah profile picture!) and she delivered on both counts. She actually set me up with multiple lip colors (cleaning them for me) so I could try them all on. Caveat: this Sephora isn't as big as the Sephora inside the FV store, but it was worth it for the convenience. read more

They showed me little samples of everything on my skin to make sure I really liked what I was buying. I love buying face masks and facial moisturizers from here. I love shopping at this Sephora. Customer service is excellent exceeded. I'm pretty good at selecting my own make up, but when it comes to skin care I need a little help. Diana or Dina (not sure of the spelling) approached me and walked me through skin care from start to finish, she showed me one or two options for each process and didn't make me feel overwhelmed. I am a huge fan of Sephora but not a fan of this location and it's lack of customer service. I was really happy to see when it opened inside JC Penneys even though it is about a quarter of the size of the one in Fashion Valley, it has your basics here definitely no where near the vast selection as they do there but when I need something and I am unable to get down there then it's nice that it's closer but that's about all that it's good for.... Several times I have visited this store and had the same experience, I walk in and the employees are talking amongst themselves, look at you but really don't make eye contact then go back to their conversations, I'm sorry but I didn't wear an invisible cloak and I know you saw me, I'm not asking much just acknowledge my presence, and greet me! Possibly ask if I need help with anything?! There was one time I can say I had good customer service and this was because I stood at the counter for a while before any one said anything to me. I came in looking to try a new liquid foundation which I had a few in mind and asked to get some samples before I committed to buying one and the gal who helped me was great, she made several recommendations and tried them on me to make sure I was happy then gave me the samples of the ones I liked. She was very patient, nice, and personable. That is really the only saving grace for this place that there is a couple employees who care. Another couple of issues I have is that it is not kept up very well and they are consistently out of products, they really need to take a closer look at inventory and stock up on the top sellers.... just sayin'! read more

This has weirdly become my preferred Sephora location. I usually don't frequent the ones inside JC Penney and prefer the stand alone stores because they have more stock, but the customer service at this one in particular is what continues to bring me back. You just don't get the one-on-one service at the large locations not to mention the workers make up at this one is on point. All of the girls I've encountered here are beyond helpful and even when it's busy, they make sure you get everything you need and tell you the inside scoop on the best products. Went into Sephora for the first time today to buy a new brush for my mineral makeup. I ended up walking out with new eye shadow, brushes, perfume, makeup, blush, and sun screen. It was easy to find help and the first girl I talked to was very knowledgable about sunscreen. I let her know that I tried a bunch of SPF moisturizers that I didn't like and she showed me a powder sunscreen that I really liked. I would have never known about it if she didn't show it to me. Second item in the basket. I decided to look around. The other girl who helped me (Emily) was very helpful and knowledgable of the products they had to offer. She made suggestions, but was not pushy and did not try to sell me something I didn't want. I tried my new products this evening and am very happy with them. The brushes that Emily suggested for eyeshadow application were right on. I would go back to this store in a heart beat. There is a wide range of products, great customer service, and the sales staff are helpful, but not pushy. I am also very pleased with the products I purchased. read more

I have been to this Sephora over 15 times in the last year and I could never get help with anything I needed or get someone to answer any questions. That all changed when I found Jackie. Jackie color matched me and suggest a few foundations, sure enough, after hundreds of dollars and wasted hours I finally found my HOLY GRAIL foundation. Jackie suggested products most suitable for my skin type and showed me how to apply, what to apply with and answer all my questions, and the best part is she made me feel comfortable doing so. Sephora like most is one of my favorite stores. This location is the worst display. They never have anything in stock and the employees are always understaffed at the worst times. I wouldn't say that they even seem like they want to help you.. which leads to customer service and training. I LOVE Sephora! However my experience at this location was horrible & it was extremely upsetting. I was basically fogotten and had numerous customers helped ahead of me. I would give the customer service in this place 4 stars since they are always friendly and helpful. The reason I give it 3 stars is because they seem to be out of stock of many of their products, and the products that are there can be kind of old (as in they're covered in dust in a crumpled box). I can always order things online which is what I end up doing sometimes anyway. I no longer shop at Ulta due to harassment from their security guard so Sephora and Birchbox get all my business. I usually drive all the way from East County to the Sephora in Fashion Valley. Unfortunately because of time, I called Sephora in El Cajon. I called 3 weeks in advance to schedule an appointment. I thought my appointment was scheduled because the girl on the phone never said I needed to get a call back. I called the day before to confirm and then again the same day and finally at 7pm the night before my appointment they told me I didn't have one. They also said there was no way they could accommodate me the next day. They were not helpful in suggesting another place or did it seem that they cared at all. I ended up going to the MAC inside Grossmont mall and they were happy to squeeze me in. Very friendly! read more

Terrible customer service! Made a large purchase at the sephora store and returned it to the sephora in jc Penney (it was 45 minutes closer to me). They insisted on giving me store credit (for what reason I don't know as u had paid in cash). What they failed to explain was that store credit ONLY works at the sephora in jc Penney! When I called them (because they have such limited options and the product I wanted to order was not sold there) she literally said "there's nothing I can do". That's it! At the very least they should have allowed me to exchange my store credit for cash since they did not explain this. Terrible customer service and they did not even care to try and fix it. I will NEVER shop at this store again. Which overall is disappointing as I am a loyal sephora customer and now have to drive out of the way. read more

As a beauty blogger, I'm always on the search for different types of makeup and beauty products to purchase. However, last night I was unable to do that. Around 8:50pm (5/01/2014) my sister and I stepped inside the Jcp Sephora in Parkway Plaza mall. There was a few others in line paying, but no one shopping. Straight off the back we weren't greeted. I didn't mind not being greeted since the girl behind the counter was busy helping other customers out. I specifically went in to check out the Kat Von D foundation. It was a bit difficult to find. So I was basically wandering around the store in a rush searching since they were closing soon. I noticed the young lady behind the counter just staring at us. She never asked us if we needed help finding anything. She just watched. We finally found what we were looking for and proceeded to sample and swatch. As I was applying the foundation on my chin I looked up and realized the employee was now standing behind us. Again, she never once greeted or asked us if we needed help with anything. I then put the makeup down and started looking at the fragrances. I noticed that she left the area she was watching us from and walked right into me. Again, never said a word to us. I then went back over to the Kat Von D section since that was the reason why we came. I was looking for a specific shade, however the tester shades were out of order. So I was having a hard time finding my shade. Again, the employee found her way behind us, never asking if we needed help. I even opened up a box of the foundation to compare the shade with the tester since the shades were out of order. The employee was still standing there and watching us without ever speaking. I couldn't take it anymore so we decided to leave. As we were making our way out, I walked right past the employee. Again, she never spoke a word. No "have a nice day" or anything. Right before I left Sephora, I stopped and turned around and the employee was now facing the opposite direction, watching us as we left. We even locked eyes. If you review surveillance cameras, you can see just how obvious it was. I remember wanting to explode. I was so upset! We did absolutely NOTHING however, we were basically judge right as we came in to shop. My entire day was ruined. Its unfair that normal people can not shop without being judge by whatever reason people decide to judge us by. I was humiliated and hurt. I will never shop at this location again! read more

the lady who was originally with me (super blonde/white lady) genuinely wanted to help me but there were not enough people working for her to help individuals. I've come back plenty of times this week because "we're getting your product in tomorrow" and it's been 3 days now.. its the second time this has happened with a product at this location. The lady who helped me today was rude and didn't seem like she wanted to be there. No one likes to work, but at least fake it a little, I've worked retail, I try to understand. The sephora in JC penny is not that nice and they only give store credit can be only used in sephora in jcpenny. They should say that before ringing up my return.
