The downside - lots of out of stock products. This isn't really their fault, but no one tried to find out if there were any of the out of stock products for me at other Sephora locations in SD or offer to order it online (I'm talking in particular about the new Hello Kitty line). This location is located in the Westfield UTC Mall in La Jolla, close to Apple. They have a great big selection of items and a good number of customer service representatives to help and assist customers. They accept cash and credit/debit cards as a method of payment. They have a Sephora rewards program that you can sign up free of charge. When you make purchases, you earn points towards samples that you can redeem. I don't often come to this store in general because I know how crazy busy they can get. I recently came in to search for a black liquid eyeliner that I can easily wipe off with water. Luckily, a friendly worker was able to assist me with my questions and she was able to point me to the right direction. I specifically requested for an eyeliner that was affordable and worked real well. I did mention that I did not want an eyeliner that needed an oil-based cleanser to remove. What was really nice of this lady who assisted me was that she explained and demonstrated how waterproof eyeliner was really "waterproof", but with pressure, the eyeliner can easily be rubbed off and causing a smudged look. With her demonstration, it allowed me to make a better choice and so I decided to purchase the Stila liquid black eyeliner. The color application is really black and bold, and even though it is "waterproof" I would still be able to wipe off the eyeliner with just water. I will definitely be coming back to this location when I need some type of beauty product. read more

It was easier for me to drive from Mira Mesa, find parking in this mess, and come inside WHILE ON HOLD, and when I arrived and showed the the manager that I was still on hold, she made excuses for the employees negligence. The line was long, but there were 3 of employees standing around at the entrance who weren't doing anything. Everyone here wears radios to communicate with each other. If the girl at the counter had half a second to call the manager over to her, she certainly had the time to ask about the ONE product I was curious whether or not they had in stock. Sephora in general doesn't really value their customers much, but at least the ones in fashion valley apologize when their customers are left on hold for a while and don't make excuses for poor service. Wow- did I ever mention how much I love this place? This Sephora location is so nice, especially after going through that long phase of renovations and construction last year. I didn't know this, but at all Sephoras, you can ask for samples of the product to try at home! Whoah, that's pretty cool. Anyways, this is my go to Sephora since its really close to UCSD. I had been eying this gorgeous red lipstick by NARS for the longest time, and since they had a sale- this was the perfect chance to buy it! I was a bit nervous though, since I don't really wear make up that often, and less do I wear lipstick. I asked the really nice girl who greeted me how to put it on and instantly she jumped to help me by escorting me to the make up table/desk and showing me how to do it. She answered all my questions and gave me really helpful recommendations too. Thank you Christina (sp?)! Come to this make up store ladies (and gents ;D), it's pretty dang awesome. read more

Definitely a fan of this location. The staff is very nice and I just like how this store is laid out. I remember coming here a lot prior to the remodeling but now it looks even better. The space is super long! It's like never ending makeup products and perfume. I actually like how things are closer together because I feel like I don't have to walk across the store to find something. Makeup is laid out in the front of the store with perfumes taking over the right wall of the store. The back has skin care, body, and hair products. The store is very clean and the testers seem to be taken care of well. I also really loved how great the staff were. They actually looked like they were enjoying themselves unlike other locations. What can I say about the products? If you want high end products then this is the place to come! You have every brand from Urban Decay to Dior under one roof. There's also newer lux brands like Marc Jacobs and old favorites such as Bare Escentuals. There's also a great variety of skin care brands such as the French pharmaceutical brand Caudalie, Boscia, and Origins. If you want a Clarisonic then this is a great place to check them out. They sell both the device, the brush heads, and the skin care range. I got a great kit for $150 (same price as the Mia2 itself) which included $50 in amazing deluxe samples. The only thing I really dislike about Sephora are the Beauty Insider perks. I find that some are just not worth it. Many look like samples you can get for free if you request them. I especially dislike when the 500 perk is a measly item. When you reach 500 points that means you spent $500! I would expect something with a little more value. Something worth $50 would be great if you normally spend a large amount at Sephora. Sometimes the 100 point perks are better than the 500 but I still keep saving them in hopes that I find something good. Step it up Sephora! I know you're more than capable of spoiling some of your big spenders. Other than that continue taking my wallet's money, it's not like I need any more makeup but I sure love coming here. read more

I am a makeup lover and love shopping at Sephora, however every time I come to this location I experience the worst customer service. If I'm dressed up and have makeup on I get help, but if I have a bare face I don't get any help. No one greeted me and I was waiting to be color matched and get some samples for almost 20 minutes, but I noticed that other people were being helped as soon as they walked in. I was so irritated I just went to the register to pay for a gloss and even the cashier was barely friendly. When I try and ask for help a worker will use a condescending tone and I'm not here for it. To make the long story short, the times I come to this location and experience this I end up not buying what I came in for because I get so fed up I just end up leaving. read more

I am so annoyed with how today turned out. I made an appt to get my makeup done for a friend's wedding a couple of days ago. The woman on the phone said she was able to squeeze me in at 10am on Saturday. I was so relieved because I have no experience with makeup. When I get there, they told me they didn't have me in the system and they were booked full. They did offer to do a mini makeover and I can work on the rest. But that's pretty useless since I needed help with everything and had absolutely no skills in applying make up. I definitely didn't want to be looking like a hot mess at my friends' wedding. Sure, they could apply my foundation and it would look great. What's the point though if my eyebrows looked like fuzzy caterpillars or my eyeshadow makes me look like a panda? I really wished they would have just told me on day I called that they couldn't fit me in so I could have looked at other options. read more

For some reason, I seem to have bought more stuff here than the Sephora at home in Canada but that's probably due to convenience and the close proximity to where I stay. On some days the staff are friendly and welcoming and on other days, they look like they're walking with a wad of cotton up their tush. On certain days, I can go 20 minutes being ignored and still buy something and the cashier will be friendly, asking if I have a Beauty Insider card and offering samples. Since my last visit, I noticed that the store changed its layout but I'm not really sure what good it did. Very patient helpful, and fun environment. I love just browsing in here for hours. They have an amazing computer in the back that can help you narrow down your search and suggest items if you're not too sure what you're looking for (or if you don't feel like asking the employees) and it gives you the option to print it all out so you don't forget or have to write it all down. I love Sephora in general, but sadly enough this location doesn't do it for me. I shop here because it is close and convenient. Lately though the items that I buy have been out of stock, so I've gone to other locations to pick them up. It's really not that big of a deal, but it can get frustrating when they are out of stock for long periods of time. The thing about this store that really saddens me is the customer service (or lack of it). As someone who has worked in customer service for years, I understand if you are having an off-day. I get it, it happens. However, more often than not when I'm in this store the employees are less then nice. I can identify with the Yelper who said that an employee made eye contact with her, then turned her head away. I usually get the impression that my presence in the store is unwanted and that the employees have better things to do with their time then help me. That's not the best impression to leave your customers with. I really want to like this store. I really do, but until their customer service improves I'm forced to only give them 2 stars. This place is amazing. They sell great products and their people there to through extensive training and know their stuff. When I was first learning makeup I would come in almost every day and buy something and get some great advice. Make sure you sign up for their rewards points. It's free and you get deals on stuff and other cool things when you buy enough for their better membership thingie. They have an AMAZING return policy rivaling that of nordstrom. If you don't like something, bring it back and get something else. Lets you try out things without any risk. The only detractor about this store is that they do not carry all the products the fashion valley mall does. read more

It's been a few months since my terrible experience here, but I it really just rubbed me the wrong way and I can't stop thinking about it, so I decided to write a review. I came in to get color matched for a foundation. I wanted to get matched in Fenty since it had a huge range of colors/undertones and would be useful as a baseline to compare with other foundation color ranges. The store was not busy at all, with several sales associates chatting with each other on the floor. I approached what I believe is the manager, a Little Person (which I believe is the PC term, I apologize if I am wrong), and she directed the woman she had been chatting with to help me. I don't remember her name, her appearance was nondescript for a Sephora employee. She asked me my skintype, which is typical. I explained that I was mostly dry, as I have eczema. The eczema, as I explained to her, makes my skin dry and flaky when I have a breakout. I told her that I was not looking for solutions, I had medication, and that I already incorporate several methods of hydration in my skincare routine to otherwise help with the side effects. All I wanted. Was a color match for Fenty Beauty's line of foundation. She recommended against it since it was a very matte formulation. I said OK, I could use some other recommendations but I wanted a color match for the brand for reference and she agreed to do so. So she took me to the Pantone machine to do a digital color match. She only put it on my forehead, which I thought was strange because people usually color match to the neck, especially since my face is lighter than my neck and it would look odd if I were to use a foundation on my face lighter than my neck. I later learned when I went to another Sephora location (I was looking at the foundation matches online and they seemed very off) that they are supposed to put the machine on your cheek, forehead, and neck and the machine takes the average between the 3. During the color matching, she constantly questioned my skincare routine. She asked me if I moisturized, and when I confirmed, she unbelievingly interjected with an "Every day?". YES, I MOISTURIZE EVERY DAY. Then she questioned my exfoliation, thinking that perhaps I over-exfoliate. I use chemical exfoliators (AHA/lactic acid), which are gentle enough to use daily and encourage cell turnover, rather than physically exfoliating (which would cause flaking). She did not seem to know about chemical exfoliation but seemed critical of my daily exfoliation regardless. When I said I didn't want a foundation with sunblock because physical sunblocks often leave a grey cast because of zinc oxide or titanium dioxide (physical sunblocks) in them, she said it was strange and had never heard of anyone wanting that before, even though I told her I did use a sunblock separately before makeup. She was CONSTANTLY criticizing me and trying to find REASONS for my dry, flaky skin when I had told her FROM THE BEGINNING (and reminded her a few times during her criticism of my skin!) that I had a SKIN CONDITION that caused the dryness and flaking. Which!! By the way!! Is officially diagnosed by a dermatologist!! And, as I mentioned!! I have medication for!! All I wanted was the color matching, and in the end, she did not even color match me to Fenty foundation (because it wasn't in the system for the Pantone matching and she couldn't be assed to do it manually). So for CONSTANTLY embarrassing me about my skin condition and not even doing the one thing I wanted for my visit, I cannot rate this location of Sephora well. I will be going to the Fashion Valley location in the future, where they have always been gracious and helpful, finding products to temporarily soothe my dry skin if they wanted to swatch more smoothly on top of it. read more

Great selection of products, friendly makeup artists, Bayotch at the register - minimum wage, maximum attitude. If you know what you need, just buy it on line than go to this store. The chick behind the counter was not in a good mood, didn't even offer me any free samples - I had to ask. She wasn't even pleasant and needs to get a non-service oriented job. In fact, I should have gotten her name because she looked like even smiling was too much of a chore for her to accomplish. A customer, needing only the slightest of help, just comes over and pays for a $65 purchase - couldn't even be bothered to say thank you. (Tho true confession, maybe it was because I just came from working out sans makeup - maybe they're nicer to people dressed to impress with makeup on,not us yoga clothes wearing women rushing around doing errands.) What they had available for my bonus points was pathetic, so I just kept them until I order something online. Great selection of make up though and the make-up artist who helped me get the product was very pleasant (I already knew what I wanted) - but next time I'll either orderonline or go to Nordie's (tho at Nordie's they're also more helpful if you're in full makeup and dressed to impress - I just don't feel the need to impress salespeople with anything but my ability to charge expensive items.So, I'll shower and change next time - but I'm not dressing to impress to go shopping unless it includes drinks, dinner or the ArcLight.) read more

This, like many other Sephora gets pretty busy on the weekends. Best to come off peak hours if you need help. I asked for a couple samples and it took a little while waiting for someone to be free. Another customer asked an associate to put on a foundation on them and was told it could be about 30 min and suggested making an appt for a mini makeover in the future. They definitely do need more associates on weekend. The aisles van get pretty crowded and tight at times. Aside from the peak time businesses, Sephora is awesome. Sephora offers free classes that you can sign up. I've taken a class or two and it's great because you get to try on different make up brands and you get personal attention. Classes at UTC are generally Sunday mornings before they open. All the associates during the classes are super helpful and really nice. Return policy is great! In store samples usually are only good for 1-3 applications, so you don't really get a sense of the product. I have purchased a few items and after trying it for a week or two, have returned items that didn't work out. This definitely gives me confidence in purchasing. read more

Being already a little overwhelmed, it was really busy, full of makeup obsessed superficial girls, and -after I could finally catch one- the employees acted like I shouldn't have been asking them questions.
