The team at Sequoia Eye Group is so welcoming, friendly, and competent that I felt I should be recognizing their superb care. From the moment I called their office, I could tell that they were different than other office. Before my first visit, they disclosed to me an estimate of how much I would be responsible for vs how much the insurance would cover. This already was a delightful surprise as all my other doctors never mention anything and only send me a (sometimes shocking!) bill later. I'm not sure why other offices don't follow this, but I'm assuming it's because checking insurance is a lot of extra work. I appreciate the transparency of this office. It's refreshing, and consistent with the culture of the office. The visit was great- efficient, thorough, and not very long if one considers the amount of technology and testing that is done in a short time. This office is a medical office, not a LensCrafters! Quite the contrary- this office doesn't even sell glasses and there is no retail or sales aspect at all. I found Dr. Ngai charming, affable, and a patient teacher. He really made sure my questions were addressed. When I complemented him on his teaching ability during my first visit, he replied that the origin of the word doctor is "teacher" and that he loved educating patients. My family has been coming to this office location for as long as I can remember (my childhood eye exams were here, and my grandparents also went here). I haven't been back in over 20 years to visit until recently when my parents lost their usual ride and needed me to take them to see Dr. Ngai, who has been their doctor for the past few years. Dr. Philip Ngai and his team are a pleasure to work with- seriously his office is up there with the best I've visited. The caring demeanor of every person at the office is palpable. I have traveled the country for schooling and work, and as a result, I been under the care of many eye doctors. From the moment I met Dr. Ngai, I could tell he was different. During my visits with him, I know I have his complete attention. He will take his time reviewing studies with me, answer my questions, and not rush through the visit. Even at the most famous universities, I didn't get an experience like this. Usually at large centers, the doctors talk to their assistants and scribes more than they talk to patients. And at large centers, it's a two hour wait only to chat with the doctor for 5 or maybe 10 minutes. At this office all the testing and consultation is done in less than an hour. For me, this is pretty remarkable. I'm typically nervous around doctors, but I can be relaxed with Dr. Ngai as he's so personable. He enjoys treating patients. I was just in the waiting room, and patient before me mentioned on his way out that he felt like he could grab a drink outside the clinic and chat with Dr. Ngai. I totally agree- Dr. Ngai is so approachable. I feel he truly cares about his patients. We've been feeling the need for a more personal touch than the bigger places she's been to.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Shes getting older and becoming more sensitive to the big hospital experience, with the multiple-hour wait, parking structures, elevators, and the hopping to different stations was becoming more difficult for her to endure. Sadly the next available appointment was 3 months, with a different doctor. Positive: Very professional and courteous staff. The doctor was very genuine with his diagnosis and suggestions, and wasn't interested in getting more tests done before he could tell me what I say (unlike most other medical institutions in the US that was focused more on revenue generation than medical treatments for the people). Not so positive: The doctor was running late by over 60 mins because of a difficult patient he was attending before. However the staff would constantly keep checking in with me to keep me updated about the delay. I had a persistent eye infection that I had been dealing with for months. I saw several eye doctors for consultations, but no one was able to figure out why my infection wouldn't go away. I was so frustrated and sad about my persistent eye condition, until I was referred to Dr. Philip Ngai's office by my physician friend. From the moment I entered the quaint office, I knew it would be different from the others I had visited. The staff was so kind and happy, you could tell they really enjoyed what they were doing. Before my visit they provided full transparency around what to expect regarding insurance. After checking in, the courteous technicians performed several cutting edge tests on my eyes. Finally, I met with Dr. Ngai, who asked several questions, explained my test results, and performed a thorough exam. He then discussed with me what the possible causes of my eye problem were, my options for treatment, and why the option we chose was the best one. I was impressed with Dr. Ngai's knowledge but also with his ability to clearly explain and teach me about what was happening in my eye. It felt like a real medical consultation should be like. He never rushed me and answered all my questions. At the end of the visit, I felt confident in his approach. It turns out that what most others thought was an infection was actually a more rare disease called uveitis, which can look like an infection but cause serious eye problems if not treated properly. I'm so thankful my physician friend referred me to Dr. Ngai. Now I can carry on with my life like normal, without worrying about my eyes. Most people don't appreciate health and eyes until they're sick. I'd highly recommend Dr. Ngai to anyone looking for a competent and trustworthy ophthalmologist to take care of their eyes. I was having a sudden irritation on my right eye while noticing a unusual bump on the surface of my eye. I found Dr. Philip Ngai through yelp and VSP (called to confirmed if they are back to VSP network before your visit), was able to get an appointment right next morning. The visit went well, several images and measurements were taken, including the bottom of my eyes without the drops, which was great! Prior to seeing Dr. Ngai I felt extremely defeated with the issue I was having in my eye lid. This was an ongoing issue I had been dealing with for approx. a year and a half. I had been seen by two other physicians for my ongoing issue (Chalazion). One of the two physicians had basically told me this was something I was just going to have to deal with. I had cataract surgery on both eyes in July of 2023. Dr. Ngai performed the surgery over a three week period. Everything worked out great for me. No longer do I wear prescription glasses. Once I was in the O.R., the surgery seemed to take only about ten to fifteen minutes. It was painless. I was glade to have the operation done on both eyes. I came to the Sequoia Eye Group in Redwood City, looking for a solution for my declining vision. I met with Dr. Phillip Ngai, with the hopes for an answer to my frustration of cheater glasses. After a full examine of my eyes Dr. Ngai suggested Panoptix Lens. The Doctor took the time to answer all my questions. I trusted his confidence as a surgeon and faith in this process. This week I had surgery on my left eye, I was amazed never felt anything, during or after surgery. Next morning follow up visit I now have 20/20 vision in my left eye. I don't anticipate Dr. Feiler reading this review, but if you do, Dr. Feiler: Thank you very much for your amazing services. Dr. Feiler seems like a pretty honest guy. His office really struck me as nice too. The receptionist is a mom with grown children, Dr. Feiler has adult children also - that right there made me feel more at ease. The lab assistant (thui? I can't recall his name) speaks LIGHTNING SPEED FAST - I use caps to annunciate this: he damn near put me into a panic attack with his cadence of speaking. I wasn't on his level. LOL. But he too, was pleasant and very nice. I've seen a couple reviews here saying Dr. Feiler might not have the best bedside manner - I can see that - he's not warm n' fuzzy. That being said - I don't want a warm n' fuzzy doctor. I want a doctor who knows his stuff and can fix my bat-shit-blind eyes. If I want soft and gentle, I will visit my 85-year old Nonna. I want a doctor to give it to me straight... So if you're looking for a sweet, sugary, fluffing doctor - go elsewhere. This guy will fix your eyes quickly and send you home without making you spend ridiculous amounts of money. I think we all have heard quotes around $5k per eye on LASIK. Dr. Feiler charges the same fee for LASIK - regardless of the vision Rx. That's a pretty nice thing. I asked why. Wanna know what he said? He said "because the laser takes 5-30 seconds per eye - why on earth would I charge an extra $2-3k for seconds?" WOW. Honesty. I like it. Fair Warning: the office where you get your appointments and consultation looks old. It is old. There's lotsa wood paneling - it could use a major update. But Dr. Feiler is old. So hey, he is keeping it consistent. :D All we need is a 1970's jam in the background and it's like home! The lab assistant gave me Valium to calm my panicked butt down. I have only had two panic attacks in life - and I happened to have one there. Great. LOL. They really helped me relax, and I went to the laser center down the street for my surgery. They warned me there's little furniture there and it can look kinda creepy but it's because they only use it for surgery. It's definitely creepy but clean lol. They had me wait in the lobby and I had another Valium so I wouldn't faint from my panic attack... The assistant was super nice. He set up the room while we waited for Dr. Feiler to get there. They numbed my eyeballs as I laid in the dentist-like chair and they put that awkward eye stretchy thing on to open your eyes. None of that hurt - it's just awkward feeling. It will bother your lids the next couple days as you heal FYI. They stick a big vacuum like hose over your eye, I think that's what cuts the lens so that the laser can do it's tricks. It's heavy pressure but you shouldn't feel pain. I did feel pain and pressure on the second eye. They used more numbing drops but it's didn't help much. I powered through it (it's only about 10-15 seconds total). Then they have you stare at the orange light -- though once your lens is off, you can't really see. The tech reminded me it's ok and just stare in the general vicinity of where I remember the light being and stay still. I did as told. After about another 10-20 seconds I was done. I went home, slept, and came in the next day. Don't get me wrong, the first day of recovery was rough. I was basically blurry eyed and very very sore. I got this done last Wednesday, today is Tuesday (6 days later). I am using some lubricating eye drops but not too many. I have AMAZING vision. From a girl who wore glasses her whole life (near sighted and astigmatism) I cannot explain the vision I have right now. It's bizarro how amazing it is. Beyond any contacts or glasses, I feel bionic! When his receptionist called to confirm my appointment, I told her I was concerned about my upcoming diagnostic eye tests. As expected, the highlight of every visit is the consultation with Dr. Ngai, who is thorough and personable. Most importantly, while I am with him, I feel like I have his full attention. He is engaging, patient, and a phenomenal teacher. Every time I see him, he answers all my questions and I've never felt rushed. I think I must have had 18 questions on my first visit and he answered them all fully! It's clear that Dr. Ngai and his staff love what they're doing, and after just a few visits, I feel as if he's been my family eye doctor for decades. The other eye doctors I've seen throughout the years just didn't feel quite right. I'm so glad I found Dr. Ngai after my primary doctor recommended him. Thank you Dr. Ngai and Sequoia Eye team for your kindness and caring. You all are a much-needed breath of fresh air for our community.
