Today my daughter and I visited Serendipity for lunch. There was understandably a wait for outdoor seating as it was a beautiful day out. Because of this we opted to eat inside as there was open seating. We were sat right away and our waitress quickly got our drinks and took our order. Everything seemed great until it was not.... After some time passed (at least 30 minutes) we were wondering if we were forgotten about. I then knew we were in trouble when the table next to us (who were all elderly folk) were walking up to the cash register and asking for drink refills as they also seemed to be forgotten about too. Their table dessert was also missing in action, and I believe they ended up having to get it to go when they paid for their meal. It appears the wait staff were only focused on the outdoor seating at this point. The entire staff seemed overwhelmed and very very inexperienced on how to deal with a lunchtime rush. There was obviously no manager / ownership in the building. I also had to go up to the empty register, wait for 5 or so minutes, and ask for a refill for my soda too. During this time I saw our suspected order sitting on the counter queued up with a couple of other's meals. As we had been waiting almost an hour at this point for just a Gyro and Mac & Cheese I was pretty peeved and hungry (along with my 8 year old daughter). Our waitress was nonexistent at this point. I finally had to desperately ask another waitress who was walking by (who was previously avoided eye contact) if we were forgotten about. She had a rude tone stating that they were busy, but she then she grabbed our plates (the same ones that I saw on the counter) and brought them over to us. The food was decent, so that is why I gave them another star. Shortly after this our missing waitress appeared out thin air and asked if we needed anything?!?! I root for the mom and pops and I really hope that this was just an off day (it happens). However our dinning experience today at Serendipity "Gourmet" Deli was severally underwhelming and extremely disappointing. read more

Deli are hard for me to get above four stars in general. The sandwiches are well made and have the flavor you would expect from a deli. I typically go for the Reuben or cowboy Standard potato chips and a pickle slice accompany the sandwiches. A good places to hangout with a good friend. Very loud on the inside but the patio is a lovely place to eat so you can enjoy conversation. This tends to be a very busy place for lunch. If you are in a hurry I don't suggest eating here. They do takeout but even the takeout can be extremely busy as well. I suggest calling an hour ahead if you're trying to eat at noon. read more

Serendipity is a quaint little deli/lunch place tucked away in a shopping square near downtown Cary. I stopped there the other day since i was in the area and I did not want fast food, but didn't want a full restaurant meal either. The inside is quaint and has small wooden tables and there is an outside courtyard area for dining, which would be great on nice warm weather days. I ordered an albacore tuna on a croissant and it was very good. The prices with a drink came to over $10 so a bit high for what you get (the meal came with a few chips and dill pickle). They seemed to have a decent selection of sandwiches and soups, and I noticed they served wine and beer. They also had a nice dessert selection, although I did not partake on this occasion. The server was attentive and did a fine job. If I am in the area, and it is lunch time I will visit this deli again. read more

This is a great small town, locally owned business. I have been coming here for lunch for years. The staff is great and friendly and the food is just great and quick. The sandwiches are pretty basic no frills and trying to push the limits on a classic sandwich. The lunch rush is a crazy time so if you can wait till 1-1:30 on a weekday afternoon that will speed up your time there. Only thing that I would recommend would them possibly getting a bigger space but then that might get rid of the small charm of a local business in little downtown Cary. read more

I've been going to Serendipity's for years and have always enjoyed a sandwich and a hot bowl of soup or chilly on a cold winter day. However last night 10FEB17 I do have to say I was disappointed in the food. The service was good as it always has been. I ordered a sandwich that came with a salad. The salad did not taste like lettuce or anything else that was in it. It had only one taste and it tasted like the inside of an old refrigerator and smelled the same. I didn't eat it. The sandwich was good, but I did ask for Thousand Island dressing. They must make it there and it didn't taste like Thousand Island dressing. It looked like and tasted like Mayo with some sort of coloring and flavoring in it. I didn't use it. I only ate half the sandwich and asked for something to pack the other half in so I could take it with me. Apparently they are not set up for packing up food to go. I made it work and we left. I love the atmosphere of Serendipity's- it is so quaint and a great neighborhood restaurant. I have been coming here for over five years and I am always pleased with my meals. The staff is incredibly friendly and extremely attentive. Anything that I have gotten here has been really good and if the weather is nice, we love sitting outside. The past few times I have really liked the Tuna Salad while my husband loves the Mexican Turkey. I have passed by this restaurant a few times and decided to give it a try for a late lunch today. Service was fast and friendly and I decided on a chicken salad sandwich to go. The sandwich came with chips and a pickle, both standard deli fare, not great but not bad. I really wanted to like the sandwich, the bread was fresh, the tomatoes were really red and actually had some flavor to them. Unfortunately the chicken salad was terrible. Zero flavor and an odd texture that I have only experienced with canned chicken. At nearly $8.00 for the sandwich I felt completely let down and ended up only eating half of it. Seems like at that price point you could use fresh chicken breast and out of all of the local sandwich shops I have eaten chicken salad at, this was a first. For the record, not that it matters, my favorite chicken salad is at Neomonde. If you go I would recommend ordering something else. read more

We've been to this place a few times. The food is only so-so, but the ownership and staff is what makes this place the worst of downtown Cary. We were at a recent downtown Cary festival in their parking lot. This place closed after lunch (we wanted to eat there), so we got food from a festival food truck. We were sitting at one of their old outdoor tables across from a family with three young kids (all under 5?) to get a break from the sun. One of the staff came out and said we couldn't eat there (even though they were closed) and that the owner wanted us gone. This was my daughter's and my first visit to this restaurant . It had been recommended to us by a friend. We were very disappointed with the food and service. We walked in at 2:30 knowing they closed at 3. The waitress greeted us by saying "we close at 3 just so you know." She left us with menus to get our sweet teas which were very weak and barely sweetened. Then she asked for our order without telling us the soup or quiche of the day. I'd told her it was our first time at Serendipity but she didn't even acknowledge it with a special welcome. We simply felt rushed to order and leave. I ordered the quiche, which was tomato spinach and mushroom, and salad with homemade ranch dressing. My daughter ordered a corned beef sandwich which came with potato chips. My quiche was burned char black on top and had been microwaved to heat it up. The lettuce of the salad was limp and had a rubbery texture - not fresh and crispy . The dressing was unremarkable. After the food was delivered by a second waitress, no one checked on us. They were too busy trying to close up . At checkout the waitress that had served our food asked, "how was everything?" When I told her about the burned quiche and the poor salad, she replied, "Oh really? Everyone loves our quiche. I told her I'd left it at our table if she wanted to look at it. " She took it off the bill but I felt as if I'd done something wrong by coming in 30 mins before closing and pointing out the burned food. We left by 2:50. You order from your table but then take your bill to the front and wait to pay in the same one line that other people use to pick up to-go orders. It was made with canned tomatoes, which was verified. I am a foodie and typically not a food snob but this was terrible. I really want to love this place. The whole idea of this deli is great. I have attempted to eat here four times and only succeeded twice. The food is pretty good, I'll give you that. Service is really lacking. I know they are constantly hiring, so maybe servers are still learning, I can accept that. During our first visit, there was a large crowd gathered around the order-out/pay station/entrance. It was lunchtime, it was chaotic. We let someone know we were looking for a table and got out of the way. We waited 10 minutes as other customers arriving after us were being seated before us. We gave a gentle reminder that we still wanted a table and the hostess, exasperated, told us we should have spoken up and it's not her fault. We weren't blaming her, but she made us feel like we were an inconvenience. Food was fine, service improved slightly by the end of the meal. On another visit I asked if we could sit outside on the gorgeous day and was told there weren't enough servers to send outside so they were only seating inside. Fair enough, I went elsewhere to eat outside. It's a shame to waste that beautiful outdoor patio on a pretty day. Anyway, best of luck to this place! It has so much potential, and clearly others have had better luck at this restaurant than I have had. read more
