It was the hardest decision ever, but I had to humanely euthanize my lovely dog this week and chose Serene Passages. -The booking process was simple yet thorough (they did need a letter from my vet signing off because my dog was so young, but otherwise I think you can just book it assuming your dog is old, or show proof they're terminally ill). -I called on a Monday and was able to get an appointment the next day. I was given a window of time the doctor would show up to my home, and updated several times on accurate arrival times once he was on his way. -The doctor was kind and compassionate. He let us sit with our girl and cry it out for as long as we needed before we were ready. He explained what would happen and walked us through every step as it happened. He was very delicate to hide the parts that were harder to watch, like the injections or any natural expression that happened post mortem. No animal lover wants to make the decision to put their beloved pet to sleep. It is one of the most difficult decisions you'll make in your life. When we heard home euthanasia was an option, we knew it was perfect for our 14 year old pup Tye, who was in end stage anal gland cancer. We like everyone, had hoped he would just pass in his sleep. I called three different euthanasia places one was unable to fit us in and referred us to Serene Passages. Which, in the end was the perfect fit for our family. One company wanted almost $1300k we're willing to spend that for our pup but it seemed so excessive. Serene passages charged $820. That was for Dr. Scott to come visit our home, administer medications, transport Tye and for his private cremation. This also included receiving Tye's ashes back in a spreading tube, a paw print, and a clipping of his fur. Dr. Scott was the sweetest human we've met. His warmth, and compassion, was felt by all of us present with Tye. Dr. Scott was so thorough, and made sure all family questions, and needs were met. I had to say goodbye to my beloved dog Frankie earlier this year. Cancer had taken over his liver and metastasized, and specialists gave him a month at the most. It was all so sudden and there were no signs other than weight loss. Making the decision to say goodbye was heart-wrenching and I took finding the right place seriously. They explained what came after and handed me a pamphlet with the steps, because they knew I wouldn't remember. When speaking with her, I was sobbing. I apologized that she had to talk with blubbering people like me every day. She said, "Oh, no, you're fine, it is an honor for me to help." I almost died right there on the phone. It's been a while since a perfect stranger was so kind. In our angry and polarized world, they are a salve. We booked for Monday morning. Don, an equal in kindness and compassion (with a very cool story about how he came to have this job), reached out to confirm. And on the morning of he called to tell us when Dr Nicole was en route and gave us an ETA. He called again once they realized one of the highways up the mountain was closed and Dr Nicole was caught in traffic. He gave me a new ETA. Then this angel on earth was at my door. She ever so quietly knocked as to not distress M. She took it very slowly, understanding he was a little sketchy about strangers. She spoke softly and slowly inched closer to our Biggie. She spoke with us about how his weekend had gone and very gently examined him. She mostly looked and only touched him with our permission and when necessary. After watching and listening she decided a gentle sedative would be helpful to keep him calm and us safe. She was an absolute professional, explaining everything first, then getting our permission and then gave him the sedative allowing us to help. She timed the sedative and checked him every two minutes until ten had passed. Following the pattern of explaining, asking permission then doing, she prepared the area around the vein she'd chosen for the IV. Then she used a butterfly needle (smallest and least painful) IV (which she held, what a pro) and finally administered the phenobarbital. In the worst moments in our lives (losing loved ones), Dr Nicole and her crew were truly angelic. We could not have dreamt of a more peaceful and loving experience. We both held Marcellus as he took his last breaths. Dr Nicole then walked quietly outside and gave us as much time as we needed. We honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience (except of course not having to euthanize our boy in the first place). But once he came to us at 2.5 years, he had a wonderful life of 14 years total. He was an 88# German shepherd, tough guy when standing with us, and full-on drama queen when not. We couldn't have given him a better send off. Dr Nocole and her Serene Passages made it all possible. They are a full-service operation, so we are expecting Marcellus's ashes back with us in a couple weeks, in an urn engraved with all of his names. If there was more than a five-star rating, I would give it to Serene Passages. Dr Nicole, Joy and Don are ROCKSTARS! I can never thank them enough. PS The online form is genius! When it actually came time for the procedure, Dr. Nicole was extremely empathetic, explained every step, and was sure to make sure I was comfortable, Koda was comfortable, and that we went at my pace. There was no rushing and she was kind the entire time, and Koda was given dignity. Afterward, she was patient and made sure I took all the time I needed for my goodbyes. I never felt rushed and it truly felt she was just there for me in this process. My family has taken dogs in to vets when I was a child and I remember everything being so much faster to get you in and out of the office. This was so much more comfortable and personal. What I also liked was she allowed us to focus on our grief instead of money. We didn't prepay, and as she left she told us we can take our time to pay, and that she trusted us. She was very thorough in explaining the process and seemed to genuinely care. She brought with her some pee pads and a pillow for his head. Those were thoughtful details. I wish every pet got to go as peacefully as this. It's been a great comfort to me, now that it's complete, to know that it was as gentle as possible. I'm heartbroken, of course, and nothing can change that. But this was a great gift. Truly. I've had another vet come do a home euthanasia before, and he was fine, but Nicole was better.
