Aziz is a true master of color and style. I've been with him for 20 years!! Nobody can do my hair like he can

I feel awful writing this review because it was my first time at this salon and Aziz told me he had just come back to work after a tragedy, but I'm afraid I won't be going back. He and the staff were very friendly and says he's been cutting hair for over 15 years. Problem is it didn't show. I told him how nervous I was about the cut because of butchers in my past but he assured me he knew what I wanted: a 'stacked, dramatic, long A-line'. This isn't the worst butchering my curly hair has suffered, but it's up there. It's almost straight across and doesn't match up with the front pieces I didn't want cut because he didn't pay any attention at all to the angle. It's also too short, once again!!!! I barely have any layers and will have to get another cut very soon. I'll post a pic for you to see this, I straightened it so it's obvious. He almost nailed my color, it's a little dark, but reds fade faster than most so no biggie, it even smelled nice during application. I wish him the best with his loyal clients and very fair pricing for all over color, though I have to get it fixed soon so it's another pricey mistake. I miss Sarah :( read more

First time experiencing a brazillian wax -- horrible experience. All the reviews they have on here are not for the same lady (Pinky)....I believe her name was Angela. I was taken back to a room where I told the lady it was my first time -- she seemed as uncomforable as I did. First -- the wax was way too hot!!! Second -- my skin was too taut and she mis pulled over ten times. I can understand a onsie twosie, but ten was a little much. She told me it was my fault because I had never waxed before and my hair was too course from shaving....BS!!! Anyways, after FIFTY minutes, she finally said she was done..When I got home I discovered she left patches of hair everywhere!!!! I walked away burnt, BLEEDING, skin missing, and paying too much ($65) for this experience. My lady parts were swollen and bruised for two-three days following the horrid experience. Ladies, do yourself a favor and steer clear of this place. This was a first and LAST time coming to this salon. read more

The only thing positive about my experience here was the good customer service. Everyone is very nice and inviting. The experience with my hair was a disaster!! Jaclyn(manager) did my hair. I asked for an ombré, from my shoulders down. When she had finished, my hair was mostly ORANGE, with big brown spots in the back where she had missed pieces, and about two inches away from my roots! I even went back the next day and asked for it to be fixed. Most of the orange came out (not all of it) but there is still clearly large areas that are brown. I have had my hair colored blonde many times before and know that she seriously messed my hair up. I won't even return for it to be fixed a third time. read more

**PLEASE NOTE: This review is for Angela, the new replacement for Pinky, ONLY** I went to this salon a little while after Pinky left. I decided to go here anyway despite the fact that, when I called, the nice lady told me Pinky was gone but that they had someone awesome who replaced her. Well, they do not. I agree with several of the other reviews on this site regarding Angela. I went to her for a brow wax and it was honestly the worst one I have ever had, and I am by no means a waxing novice. I thought that, while she was taking 20 or so minutes to do it, that I was getting a great job because she seemed so meticulous. However, now I know better that it was just because she had no idea what she was doing. My eyebrows literally came out like they were from two different people. I almost wanted to cry when I looked at them the next day, because now it's three months later and they have only now FINALLY grown out! They were not the same height (the thickest part, inner eyes, were two different thicknesses and one was far lower and closer to my eyelid than the other). They were also not the same length, as one of them had been waxed at the outer edge almost half an inch shorter than the other. I always tell the people who work on them to watch out for my outer eyebrows, because for some reason, when they are waxed too short and inappropriately on the outer edges, they never grow back as they are extremely sparse on the skinny edges. So now I am stuck with PERMANENTLY different length brows, and the longer one will now have to be trimmed to match the newly short one. I have not used her for any other services, but honestly, I never, ever would. I would tell everyone I know to stay far away, because if she cannot do eyebrows right, then I would never trust her with other more sensitive areas or even a facial. And, then on top of that, she proceeded to lecture me on my appearance and how she could "counsel" me to help me lose weight and "eat healthier..." and this is a woman I had known for 30 minutes and she is going to judge my eating habits?? I found her to be presumptuous, a little too confident in her menial abilities, and severely lacking in skill. Because of this, I seriously doubt I would ever return to this salon, despite the fact that I received a very nice haircut that same day and everyone else was nice and down to earth. read more

Pinky did my eyebrows yesterday. It was not painful and my eyebrows were not very red at ALL! I have VERY sensitive skin. I am allergic to all fragrance and dyes, so threading is definitely the best option for me. She is so gentle, and it was very quick. The price is OK, $12, and you pay her directly. I did not know this, so I didn't bring any cash. She does accept credit cards, but definitely bring cash for her. It's much easier and preferred. I'll be back! read more

I went here for the first time on Saturday and was with Jackie - she was great! I actually wasn't sure what I wanted when I went in but then I just told her to give me what she was rockin' and that turned out to be a great look. She really took the extra time to help me out as I'm just without discernible hair skills - I've never blown my hair dry and made it look nice (not puffy)...ever. So she took an extra five and showed me how to hold it, let me do a few sections and adjusted my technique. When I tried again today it wasn't up to her quality but it was a definite improvement! The extra service in that regard went a long way with me. I'll go back again when I need a new do. read more

The first time I saw Aziz, the owner, he did a great job highlighting my already blonde hair. I got a great cut too. It was terrific and I was walking on air. Oh, and you'll get the BEST shampoo you've ever had at this salon. The second time I went, Aziz left me under the dryer too long while he ate his dinner in the back. My hair was trashed. The lowlights were orange and the highlights were snow white. I went back the next day to have it fixed, and he did get some of the orange out, but to do that he had to lighten the hair. So I left looking like a middle-aged beach bimbo wanna-be. That was February of this year. Since that time, I have spent a fortune trying to get my hair straightened out. For a while I was seeing a super expensive color correctionist in DC. Since the hair was so burned, it would not hold color. That meant all the toners and gloss would last about 3 shampoos, and then I'd be left with trailer-trash blonde again. It's been 8 months, and it's starting to look better, but really it's just got to grow out, which will take about 2 years at least. I still have it toned often, but less frequently now since my stylist is able to use fewer and fewer highlights. However, you still can see a marked line where the hair goes from sleek to brillo pad and there's nothing that can be done about that. Did I mention that I use an expensive hair masque once a week? I'm sorry for Aziz but one mistake can really screw up someone's life. You don't know how this has impacted my self esteem. It's pretty hard to project a professional image when my hair looks the way it does. Like I said, it's better now, but this is not my hair, which was always my best asset. read more

Pinky as otherwise mentioned is hands down the best eyebrow shaper and threader in the area. She knows exactly how to shape your brows to your face shape and she's the most gentle threader I've ever used. I was dismayed when the salon she used to be at closed, but am thrilled she found a new home. read more

Awful haircut from Jaclyn. Where to begin? I showed her several pictures and asked for the same exact haircut I already had, just needed a trim. I strongly believe that if you don't know how to cut hair, choose another profession. Not only did she chop my hair unevenly, she ignored my requests and preferences. She barely washes your hair then lets you drip all the way back to the chair of torture. Possibly she hates women in general, but she also did an uneven chop job to his hair. I have a short angled bob and she destroyed it. Uneven pieces stick out all over. I'm not a hair dresser and even I know that she didnt cut my hair evenly. What a mess! This review is for Aziz the owner of the Salon for my non formaldehyde keratin hair treatment. I am one of those on the road professional plus busy mom. The last thing I do is spend time for my hair. I have to take a special time out just to get my hair cut every 3-5 months if I get around otherwise I tied a bun. I have medium length fine & frizzy typical Indian gal hair. Having set my background I need to give Mr. Aziz a big THANK YOU!! He did non formaldehyde keratin hair treatment . It is over a decade I have done something special for my hair. I went on a beach vacation after the treatment and absolutely loved not have to deal with frizzy hair or carry flat iron. I would wash and go!! Wish I had known and done is earlier. Many people complaint about loosing fortunately I am not loosing more than before. He uses a very fine quality products. He took his time explained to me the process and what to expect. He is very honest and I would highly highly recommend him. read more

Ever since moving from Atlanta and leaving behind curly hair guru, Kristen James, whom I had been going to for 8 years, I have only let one person cut my hair, and that was only a trim. I admit, I've pretty much been cutting my own hair for the past 2 years...and more than just trims. My hair is super curly so we all have that "fear" that someone is going to chop all our hair off. I had been contemplating cutting it pretty short (chin length) for a while, especially since it had been very damaged from straightening it and coloring so much (all, by yours truly). Well one day I'm in Loudoun County, VA for work and I get this itch that I have to get my hair cut immediately and I don't care by who. It was around noon and I had to be in Bethesda by 3. I randomly Googled "hair salons in Sterling" and Serenity Hair Studio came up. I called to see if by any chance they had any openings right then, and they did! I arrived about 10 min later where I was greeted by Jackie, who was super bubbly and friendly. I told her that I needed a cut and color and that I haven't had my hair done professionally in a while, AND that I needed to leave by 1:30...no pressure, right? We did a quick consultation and decided on a nice overall color to match the main color in my hair. She told me they have a special for a cut, color, and deep conditioning for $120--I was game! She quickly applied the dye and under the dryer I went. Once the color was developed, I sat in the shampoo chair to get rinsed. Ok, I don't know if I just have a sensitive scalp or the shampoo girl lifts weights all day everyday, but that was one powerful head massage. I didn't know if I wanted to cry or tell myself to just relax and take it. I literally thought she was going to rip my scalp off. But, I digress. So I sit back in Jackie's chair and tell her that I actually want to go a lot shorter than planned..an a-line bob, and I show her a pic on my phone. She got excited and said it would look great. She began clipping away and was done within 15 min. Since I didn't have time to sit under a dryer, we put some gel in my hair, and I left with a damp head, taking a chance on what the final product would look like... Well, it's been about 2 weeks and I LOVE it!! It's not a dramatic a-line but its noticeable enough. It looks so much healthier and so much more shape and volume! I plan on going back for some highlights soon, and I will definitely be asking for Jackie! Happy I found my new salon, even if it's in (gasp) Loudoun County! I've been coming here for years. The service is always friendly and prompt. Everyone always has a smile on their face when you enter. Prices are reasonable and the consistency of the quality of the haircuts are unmatched. I must confess that Jaclyn is my favorite stylist. She's personable and gives a quick and outstanding haircut. In the past I 'shopped around' trying to find a good hairstylist and have been thoroughly underwhelmed. There was no consistency - if I got a good haircut one month and I went back to the same stylist I might get a horrible haircut the next time. That's not the case AT ALL here - which is why I love getting my haircut here. I know what I'm going to get. Also Jaclyn gives out good style tips, which as a man, I'm sorely in need of! I'm away from home (Atlanta) and trying to fix a botched haircut and color I got a couple months ago to experiment for my daughters upcoming wedding. After reading reviews on Yelp for many salons in the area I chose this one. I called and got an appointment for color and cut for the next afternoon with Jaclyn with my fingers crossed. Not being from the area, I had no references or suggestions from others to point me to a salon they liked. I took a chance because my stylist back home left me with dry looking hair, with lots of fly-aways and the gloss and shine had vanished. I talked to Jaclyn about my problem and my desired look. She started with color. I had not colored my hair in many years prior to my last experience back home, so I was hoping I hadn't made a mistake trying again. While wet, my hair appeared to have an strawberry blonde tint to it - not what I was going for. She said the next step is we would smooth it out with a glaze and then add conditioner. There was another lady who conditioned my hair as Jaclyn finished with another client. OMG- I think I almost fell asleep in the 4 minutes she massaged my head, yes, the conditioner was on, but she had great technique and I used to be a massage therapist. So the cut was next. We went quite a bit shorter, as I asked for, layering and cutting into the ends a bit to help separate the strands of my fine hair. Then she dried it... nicely. The last stylist tended to burn my head and I could see smoke or steam... like "it's dry already"! I tried not to look into the mirror, partly out of fear and partly because I didn't want to judge it until she was finished. It was done. I looked in the mirror. I got tears in my eyes - for real. My daughter is getting married and I have the most flattering color for my skin tone, a cut that is full of volume, movement, body and style that makes me look "10 years younger", and the shine and gloss of my natural hair was back. The mother of the bride's hair is going to be perfect! I only wish I lived here to return to Jaclyn regularly, but I guarantee that when I'm back in town, I'll have a haircut on my list of things to do! From the moment I spoke with Christina on the phone to book my appointment with ease, to walking in and being offered water/tea/coffee on the spot, to the most amazing shampooing/massage/conditioning in the comfiest chair with Belisa and of course, to the amazing stylist, Aziz, who I've learned (the hard way, RE: read my review on the Beauty House in China Town | NYC) to only let cut my hair; I loved it all. Normally, I really dread getting my hair cut (I just can't bear to part with it because I'm a freak after my bang botch up in NYC last year), but Aziz always cuts just the right, healthy amount and I love him -- and even though after a haircut, most flip their hair this way and that because you're dying for someone to notice -- no one really notices when I do cut my hair, not even me (unless they stalk me via the foursquare app and see my check in)! Because he knows I always keep my hair long a la the Kardashian's. But somehow, he manages to keep the length while trimming enough for my hair to look healthy and beautiful and keep me happy and smiling. I used to go to Aziz while he was at Pink Karma and have since followed him to his new home at Serenity. I have heard Pinky also left PK to come here and if she did, I'd recommend anyone get threaded with her -- she does an amazing threading job on eyebrows and staches. I went to see Pinky today based on other's reviews. I was not disappointed. This gal knows what she's doing. She immediately noticed that my eyebrows have been shaped differently and asked which I preferred. She understood when I explained that I like my eyebrows fuller and not thin, like they've been getting. She did her thing they look good and I will go back in 4 weeks to have her do her magic again. It will be 4 weeks because I want them to fill in a little bit where others had taken too much off. So all in all it was a great experience. I highly recommend Pinky. I am giving it four stars though because the room could have done with a bit of cleaning. Nothing awful, but it needed a clean. Won't keep me from going back though. read more

I saw Toni who shampooed, cut, and styled my hair. Toni took her time with me, talking to me to get an idea of what I wanted. She was friendly and confident in giving me the style I wanted. They have water and coffee available while you wait. The salon is quaint and clean and all the stylists were friendly. So I am a hair skeptic. I have had many of a horror story hair cuts and colors and eyebrows waxing. But Serenity & Style Hair Studio has soothed my fears I called the day of to get an appointment and was helped by Bunny on the phone, she was kind and well-spoken and set me up for a half an hour later. I started with my eyebrow wax with Angela. It was not as painful as it usually is and she was very slow and methodical at it. Unlike my past experience where they just slap wax on and tear it off. She took her time with my eyebrows to shape them perfectly and for once in my life, my eyebrows look even. This is the best eyebrow waxing I've ever had!! Bunny did my hair. I brought in a photo and I told her what I wanted. She did what I wanted but I wasn't quite happy with it. So I asked her what she would think would make it look better. (For the record, I came in with no bangs and long hair cut straight across with no layering). I told her I don't style my hair. She added slight layers on the ends to make my hair look softer and a long frame around the face and brought the bangs up a little bit. The entire time while she was cutting my hair she was explaining to me what she was doing and why she was doing it which helped me feel safe and in control because I understood what was being done, unlike many other hair appointments. She is fun and full of life and I thoroughly enjoyed my hair appointment (which is rare) and I came out with a haircut that I absolutely love! I will definitely be going back. read more

So this was my first time going to a salon to do my hair and I have to say it was the worst experience ever. I was at the salon for 4 hours because the stylist I had which was bunny didn't do my hair right the first time. I showed her a picture and the result was nothing compared to what I had asked for. She was already styling my hair until I told her that what she had done didn't look like what I wanted. Then finally she was like oh yeah I was going to tell you that. Finally she wanted me to come back the next day to get my hair fixed because she didn't want to stay there late. Some other stylist had to help her do my hair because she didn't even know what she was doing. If you girls do come here please don't get bunny. She doesn't know what she's doing. read more

OMG Thank you Yelpers! I went here to get my eyebrows done based on all of the high reviews for Pinky. I dont know if she is no longer there, or just wasnt there when I went, but Jaclyn did mine. Everywhere I go in NOVA, they seem to just wax my brows straight across and I hate it. But Jaclyn did an excellent job and put a beautiful arch back on my face, and even my husband noticed it! Jaclyn is my go-to hairdresser! She does hair for my whole family and is the only hairdresser my husband and I trust. She listens to exactly what we want and we are happy with the results every time. Recently tried this salon based on positive reviews. Started off badly when my appointment was marked down in their book for a shampoo and style, and I had made it for a color consultation, cut, and color (I never in my life have gotten just a shampoo and style so know I didn't make that error). They did squeeze me in but I felt like I had caused a problem. I'm not sure about the reviews that state the shampoos are relaxing, because that wasn't my experience. The person doing the shampoo and condition/tone was over enthusiastic and it just felt rough. I had brought a photo for the color but it came out much lighter and not the same tone. I ended up having the cut adjusted elsewhere due to longer pieces in the back that were either missed or not lined up. I won't be back. read more

I went for a touch up color. My hair was orignally light brown. I asked Christina to keep it the same color. She took it upon herself to color it darker, almost black. Imagine my surprise. When asked why she did this, she said "she thought" it looked better darker. But that's not what I asked for. My hair is thin, so I try to keep the color lighter to blend better with the scalp. Christina said that wasn't true, when hair is thin, it should be darker. I have never heard that in all my years of researching hair styles for thin hair and paying for costly scalp treatments. Now my hair is soo dark that it's hard to get it lighter w/o stripping and damaging the hair. Why would a stylist take it upon herself to change a color without consulting with the client? This is not a business I would recommend or ever return. If this is there policy to do what they want, after the client stated what they want done with there own hair, they will not be in business long. read more

Im sooo glad I found a great salon. After urgently googling salons all day at work I came across Serenity as the top salons in Sterling. I researched the prices comparing to others and read the reviews and knew they were a winnner. I got sched with Bunny and I dont regret it one bit. She was FABULOUS and took her time even when she was scheduled to be off an hour after I arrived. Since I have extremly thick hair that was down to my bra line, she kept it professional and cut my hair how I asked it to be cut. She was very friendly and outgoing. She provided great advice and explained every step by step to make sure I was happy. . I freakin love her!!!! The shampooist I believe her name was Liza she's also great, sweet, gentle and very soothing. I wanted to take her home with me just to shampoo my hair haha. The staff was also very friendly and welcoming. They knew how to have a great time. I love it and def reccomend it. You wont regret it.. When I was looking for a salon to handle the hair needs for my wedding, I really got the run around. I have long hair, so stylists kept telling me I needed to cut my hair to achieve my wedding look. I was told the salons refused to open early to help us be ready in time, and managers quite simply didn't return my calls. One month before the wedding, when I started to get desperate, I found Serenity & Style Hair Studio and scheduled a meeting with Jaclyn. I went to my meeting with dread... was this going to be another rude salon demanding I cut my hair to accommodate them? The answer - NOT AT ALL! Jaclyn looked at all our style inspiration pictures and said let's do it. When I told her our first dance wasn't your usual dance, and my waist length hair needed to make it into an up-do that could survive spending some time upside down, she rubbed her hands together and basically said "game on". When my first trial run didn't quite make it Jaclyn had me come in and do another at no cost just to make sure we'd get it right. With all my bridesmaids from out of state she had me bring her pictures of each girl so she could see how their hair was naturally and make sure she booked the best stylist for each of their needs. When the wedding day came Jaclyn was on a mission - we stayed on time, in budget, and my hair not only survived our dance, but at the end of the day it still looked amazing.
