Not bad for six dollars. I stopped here last night on the way home, ordered at the bar, and was on my way in less than 10 minutes. Drive thrus sometimes don't move that fast, so I was happy with the service. Chips and salsa are free, always a plus. I ordered the Tacos Locos: two soft tacos with pico, charro beans and chips and salsa to go. The tacos include a boneless, pressed chicken thigh and marinated, grilled onions. Tortillas weren't as fresh as they probably were at lunchtime. I appreciated the dark-meat option, because white meat is so easy to screw up on a commercial scale. Charro beans were spiced with fresh jalepenos, bacon and onions. I wouldn't want to come here on a date, but hit the spot last night. read more

I gotta say...it's rare that I give 5 stars, but I'm impressed! Went to Serranos over lunch today with some coworkers & everything I tried was delicious! I went out on a limb and had their Tulum tacos (achiote marinated pork w/ avocado in corn tortilla), which were DEEELICIOUS...the meet was tender and the flavor/spice was intense, but in a good way...Even their salsa and chips are good...you can tell both are homemade. I'm surprised that most users don't give Serranos higher ratings. Then again, for some reason, people in this area like places like Matt's El Rancho and Trudy's, which I think are horrible. Go figure. I think my third child must have been made COMPLETELY of Serranos food. It is all my wife wanted when she was pregnant. We go to this place often, and have been visiting them for 10 years consistently, in locations that are closed now, as well as this one. We must go there a couple times a month. We love the chips and salsa, which is variable on the level of spicyness, but it's never been too hot to handle. The chips are decent, but not as good as Pappasitos, who have the thinner chips. The chicken and/or beef fajitas are wonderful. The onions in it are very good and the tortillas are warm and soft, although there are softer ones a Pappasitos and other places that have those tortilla-making machines on display. The chicken chimichangas with verde sauce are fabulous. The beef are also excellent, but I'll never go back to beef now that I had the chicken. My new favorite are the texas tacos with mesquite bbq sauce. That is some awesome sauce. They have many varieties of chicken thighs marinated and covered with cheese. Very easy to eat. The charro beans are the only charro beans I've ever thought worthy of eating with my meal. The spanish rice is forgettable. My wife gets the tortilla soup and pacifico rice with refried beans. It comes with this big chunk of corn cob. The best thing there is probably the chicken quesadillas. These are the best ANYWHERE. Inside are chicken, cheese, and pico. They come with tomato, sour cream, and gauc on the side too. I am a big cola fan. The Coke there is some of the best. Good Dr. Pepper too. The service is usually good and sometimes excellent. Sometimes they overload the bar side and it gets real slow. Some of their waiters are so good it's scary. OH, I almost forgot. The pancake breakfast is OUT OF THIS WORLD!! It's all about the pecan syrup, which must be oozing butter or something. It's too good to be good for you, but every once in a while, it's OK to indulge. It's warm and has pecans floating on top. Serrano's is definitely not the greatest Mexican restaurant in Austin. But how could you expect them to be in a place with so many great Mexican restaurants. However it is close to where I live and they make a pretty good Chipotle sauce which I love to get on my chicken enchiladas. They also have pretty good Spanish rice. All in all they aren't bad. The only thing I really dislike about them is that I don't particularly like the salsa they serve. It has way to much cilantro for my taste. read more

Very nice food. Even had options for my vegetarian friends. The price was extremely reasonable. Very authentic Mexican flavor. Can't tell what's authentic as I've never been to Mexico. Food is really good but service is always lousy!!! We get better service in bar area than in restaurant. Don't expect to be greeted by someone who will seat you. More likely ignored. I got the Pastor tacos ($8.00) and added an extra pastor taco for $3.00 with a side of rice (forgot what the side of rice costs). The pastor has chunks of pineapple throughout the meat which I don't mind but some of you might. I liked that the pastor and pineapple was charred a little. I asked for flour tortillas but received corn tortillas. The rice was okay-- definitely better than mine, I always seem to burn it lol. The green salsa was okay as well, went well with the tacos. Best experience in Austin this trip. I stopped on the way to Mom's for a take out dinner. I was told to order at the bar, well if I must I might as well relax from the flight with a margarita. There were two ladies ready to see the drummer from the Grateful Dead sitting at the bar, I have never seen senior deadheads. They raved about Serranos and guided me to the Tulum Pork tacos. While the tacos were being prepared, I had a top shelf margarita and great chips and salsa. My new found deadhead friends offered chili con queso and caught me up on Austin gossip (I am a 6th generation Austin girl). Great service, good food, great clientele, And a special thank you to the hostess who grabbed me a few creams for my morning coffee. You will be my first stop in Austin from now on. read more

When it comes to Tex Mex and good food for breakfast, lunch, dinner or take out Serrano's is my pick for SW Austin. It definitely helps that its a short hop down Mopac from my house and that the food is always consistent and good. They have a great bar area where you can also eat or just chill, have a few drinks, and watch a game. Its rare that you have to wait for much of anything from a table to your food or a drink. The wait staff has several characters among them and I think my favorite is "The Suz." Overall I give this place a thumbs up for service, selection and great food. My dish: Chicken chile relleno with extra rice and extra tortillas. Unless its breakfast when I have some breakfast tacos. read more

Note to Regional Management: The restrooms are absolutely disgusting at this location 290 West and Mopac. I've come here off and on for almost 10 years, went this past weekend with wife and daughter and the men's room was terrible. The floor needs to be pressure washed, everything stunk and you can see the filth on the toilets, floor and countertops. Restaurant at 30% capacity at 6:30pm on Saturday 8/12/17, yet manager on duty (white male with no hair) was more interested in joking around with hostesses than tending to the restaurant. Being a male he had to be fully aware of how bad the men's restroom was. For the public: The rest of the restaurant isn't necessarily clean either, there's a run down feel to the entire atmosphere. I'm ok with dive Mexican places but this is a chain, it should be better. Definitely not worth the money, many other places to go in south Austin. read more

Everything was going well till I got the bill. $24.00 for two margaritas that the bartender recommended!! You have got to be kidding me. I had the pollo chipolte which was great, but a little difficult to eat with there silverware from the early 80's. My knife with the wooden handle was bent and loosely coming off of the blade of the knife. Over all a decent visit but I won't be going back for the ridiculously over priced margaritas. This is one of my go-to Tex-Mex places. It's right next to my office. I prefer Trudy's in general, but I loooove the cheese enchilada at Serrano's. They pass my cheese enchilada test in that it uses real cheese, with some body to it. Not american "cheese" or queso inside that enchilada. How can so many folks think this particular location of Serrano's is so good? I've been going to Serrano's since Adam & David opened the first one on Ben White and have been frequenting all the other locations including the seafood concept Pulpo Loco and the Ninfa's they bought-out from Houston. This location was bad from the beginning and has evolved into an overpriced, flavorless shell of what Serrano's once was. C'mon folks, it's just plain nasty and you know it. My wife had a $25 gift card so there was no convincing her that the food would still be bad even if we paid less for it. She and my son split the beef fajitas for two and only ate half of them as they were completely unseasoned. I had the $8 Texas Tacos which are supposed to be sliced brisket but what I got were chopped brisket tacos that were about 60% fat. Nasty. For the record the manager knocked $5 off the meal after seeing the nasty mound of fat I pulled out of the tacos. Go there for the margaritas and that's it. The food is just not worth the time or heartache especially if you have fond memories of what Serrano's used to be. read more

The service was just ok. My food was acceptable. Not great but acceptable. The rest of my family didn't not like their food and I taste tested to conform the food was awful. The fried chicken tasted like it had been fried in old grease. My wife's jalapeño poppers tasted like they weren't cooked all the way. The hamburger was literally the worst I have ever tasted. This restaurant probably has the best cauliflower tacos in Austin! I've been a vegetarian for a long time so sometimes it is difficult to go somewhere and find great tasting food. I had take out this evening at serranos. It was my first time eating their food and I was sorely disappointed. We had shrimp fajitas, taco salad and queso. First the good: the taco salad was ok, the shrimp were seasoned and cooked well, and there was a decent amount of them. The tortillas were good and the guacamole was average to good. The bad: I had ordered fajitas for two, the sides were for one and my one request to keep the cheese on the side was not done ( wife cant eat it). The peppers and onions were actually just oily onions ( no peppers) and barely cooked. There were very few of them as well. The queso was straight from the can and the smallest size possible. The THREE huge bags of chips they sent (overcompensating???) were like crispy tortilla crumbles that I could crust some chicken in. Did they have a round of footy and misplace their ball? On top of it all, the fajitas were overpriced. I do realize this is takeout and you can be assured i will never order out from them again. Will I try dining there one day down the line? Maybe.... But only if chuys or Maudie's is full. If not... Then sorry serranos . You had your chance. Note: I have not had their margharitas which they say are great... So maybe that could sway me. Really good happy hour deals! Great chips & salsa & queso, etc. The only complaint I have is that our server Alex last night ripped us off. He WAY over-charged us for our margaritas & mexican martinis. Once I brought it to his attention he said "oh I thought you wanted that?!" Um, don't assume we want a $11.50 margarita and that we want an expensive martini plus grand marnier! All I had said was can I get a mexican martini, and he assumed I wanted top-shelf add a floater. This review is for the new premium margaritas at the Serranos on Mopac and how disappointed I was in it. I have been a fan of Serranos for many years now till now. We would come for the wonderful fajitas and almost always have a margarita with it. I always call the for premium liquor and ask for mine to be in a tall glass. A little later a waitperson came back and apologized but said they were doing it different now it could only come in a shaker and I would pour it into a glass I said ok but I didn't want it to be overly strong. That's why I asked for it in a tall glass! The waitperson called the manager over because I was concerned about this and the manager seem unbending about i!!. So the waiter brought out this tiny litter metal shaker probably 6 to 8 oz. at most with the smallest rock glass I have seen, just a little bigger than some shot glasses 3 or 4 oz. So I go well ok, then I start to pour from this little shaker, which did not pour properly at all. Cheap! The pour on the shaker needs to be flat not rounded. We ended up drinking out of the shaker. Now for some they might just write it off that they didn't know how to pour out of shaker, but I spent over 15 years in the past working and managing bars so I have bit of experience in this area. This little shaker idea needs to go into the trash in my opinion or at the very least put it in a normal size shaker! The mexican matinees still come in a normal size shaker. So whats the deal? We are meeting a friend for dinner next week and normally we would meet at Serranos, but because of this silly change in their premium margs we are meeting elsewhere! I may come back when I don't plan to have a drink but as long as this new policy I think I can find other places that are not trying to micromanage my drinks!! read more

This place is only average as far as Tex-Mex food goes, but we come here every year after doing the MS 150 Houston-to-Austin cycling event because it's a tradition with the group we ride with. Service has always seemed slow whenever we're here, so it's probably best not to come here if you're in a hurry. The fish tacos are pretty good, and the salsa is good and spicy. The best thing about this place is their margaritas, which come VERY STRONG and in a plethora of different flavors. read more

Have been eating here for years and have been moderatly impressed with the overall experience. The food is ok, was more excited about their new breakfast menu when it came out. Since that, coming here has been a bit more of ' looking forward' to experience on the weekends. So why do they keep changing the rules? Now breakfast tacos are only served till 11am on the weekend even though the sign says breakfast till 2 pm? Even though all the breakfast tacos ingredients are still served in all the other dishes. Just silly in my opinion. But I will say I love that I can eat good old generic French toast while nibbling at chips and salsa. Eh, ordered the al pastor plate and it came out pretty bland and luke warm. The refried beans were a tad watery, also bland and not hot. For $11.99 it was overwhelmingly disappointing. My wife had the fajita enchiladas which came out sizzling hot and delicious. The chips and salsa were excellent and they keep refilling your salsa cup and chip basket at no charge. However the drinks here are overpriced, $7 for a margarita, $6 something for a Dos Equis draft is too mucho. The best Tex-Mex happy hour and veggie fajitas in Austin, hands down. The drinks are always strong and cheap, and the fajitas always feature a bountiful selection of perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned bell peppers, onions, zucchini and squash (and mushrooms if you're into that, I'm not). The tortillas are pretty damn close to what my Nana makes at Christmas and I never leave disappointed. The only negative I can think of is that there are some creepy servers that work at this location who are a little too "friendly" if you know what I mean. The happy hour appetizers are a real value. I had an event there for a 50th birthday party and the staff was fantastic. The food was great and we were treated with superior service. I couldn't have asked for a better scenario for the evening. I highly recommend choosing Serranos if you are in need of holding a small gathering with friends and family. They accommodated roughly 30-35 people perfectly.
