Great food, good service, restaurant's in tight spot but worth stopping by or taking out!

Excellent service and taste. You won't find a better run restaurant. They also provide excellent recommendations.

The food was good as usual. They have the best potsticker around. I am updating this because today, the service was pretty bad. We waited maybe 10 minutes to get menus and then we were rushed through ordering. I mean really rushed. He was asking us one after another rapid fire what we wanted. He brought us our food and he forgot my wife's eggroll. Said he would bring it right out. We never saw him at in our side of the restaurant again. Never refilled water. My wife just took a pitcher off the counter for the table. I got boxes off the counter for our leftovers. I went to the front to pay, that was next time I saw our waiter. Told him not to charge for the eggroll because we never got it. He did not charge for it, and brought it to us on the parking lot as we were leaving. There is not much in the way of ambiance, but I much prefer good food over ambiance anytime. Another service flop like today will have me reconsidering this as a goto place. read more

DO NOT GO HERE! I'm cutting to the chase, the food was disgusting. The establishment is filthy and I mean EVERYTHING from the walls down to the plates. The menu is NOT allergen friendly. The server that helped us was the ONLY server so everything was slow and he decided to put his hands on all the food. Including his thumb when serving the plates. Reasonably priced and fast but food is not very good. General Sao chix was very soggy and very little chicken after all the veggies, the crab rangoon have a great wrapper and crunch but the filling is nothing but cream cheese, white rice was really dry. Finding a place to cure our "Hangary" from Christmas Shopping. We decided to Try Sesame Chinese! Don't expect updated decor or live fish in the tanks!!! But the food is very good!!!! Not sure what type of Hot Tea they use but it is so good! Never go wrong with Crab Rangoon!!! General Tso chicken and Beef with Bamboo Shoots and Mushrooms were pretty darn good. The place is definitely run down and hasn't had a remodel in a very long time. And I'm pretty sure I probably don't want to know what the kitchen looks like, but the food is good. The wait staff is attentive and they'll have ice water and hot tea for you as soon as you sit down. Appetizers are hit and miss from what I've had. The crab Rangoon are a little on the sweet side but not overboard - I think they're good. The egg rolls are not very good in my opinion. They have good hot & sour soup, not overly spicy but very flavorful. The hot braised chicken is wonderful, as is their Mongolian chicken. They serve everything family style so I'd recommend ordering a couple of entrees and sharing them. read more

I used to eat there all the time then the quality of food & service declined. I decided to order take out last night & order the Happy Family which is suppose to have shrimp, chicken & beef . I had a taste for Chinese food, alwcidixallt Chop Suey.while they did not have Shrimp Chop Suey but they did have Shrink with vegetables and it was absolutely delicious. I also got a vegetable eggroll that was chewy and burnt so a bit of a disappointment but that's okay, the main meal was delicious. Do not go here on Christmas. They get overwhelmed and cannot process all the orders they get in and have zero control of dining in vs phone orders vs online orders. Well, nail in the coffin. We've given Sesame several chances and now we're just done with the place. At first glance it isn't too bad and they seem friendly. But upon closer look you see a bunch of flaws. The place is in desperate need up some renovations/upgrades and the food needs to be rethought. See pictures - it's obvious that the owner puts zero money back into their restaurant. Wall paper peeling, stained ceiling tiles, and and decor that's been there probably since the place opened. Those reviews that state the place is very clean have obviously not looked around. The food has been mediocre at best now that we've paid close attention. It seems to be just gloppy food on top of gloppy food. See the pictures posted by other yelpers, you'll see a lot of the same looking food. Those reviews that state it has traditional chinese food obviously have never had traditional chinese food. You'll notice when you order they don't ask you what you want to drink. They bring hot tea (which is quite nice) and water to the table but you have to make a special request to get something else to drink. If you happen to order something it comes in a can. Yes, a can. The serving staff is nice enough but for the several last visits it's been only one gentleman that looks after all the tables. So the speed of service is lacking. Please please read other reviews and you'll see that there are a lot of "we've been coming here for 15 years", "we've been coming here for 20 years" and that is one of the problems. If you've been indoctrinated into coming here you unfortunately can't see the forest for the trees. Worth one star, on the whole, but two stars because the appetizers are good. read more

This place is trash! It used to be great. Went in for a pickup order, just happened to be in the area so it's been quite a few years since I've been there. The bathrooms were utterly DISGUSTING!! We were on the hunt for Chinese food and had never been here before. Why not? First impression wasn't a wow. The outside looks a bit dated, the fish tank in the entrance was cloudy and lots of algae, the dining area looked a bit rough and dated too. It was confirmed when we both sat down and our chairs swayed and almost gave way. I am NOT that big of a guy! We swapped with a table nearby table and that seated seemed sturdier. The waitress was prompt but very curt when she dropped of the water and menu. She appeared again shortly and we ordered. After what seemed like a long time our food appeared. There were only 2 other groups eating there when we got in so we don't understand the delay. She dropped off the food and plates and took off before I could ask for more water. I even had the glass at the edge of the table. The food was OK. Nothing to make it a destination stop though. The waitress did finally come back around when we were almost done and I did manage to get my water glass refilled. The price was reasonable, the food was 'meh', and service could have been better. read more

We have never been to Sesame and in an effort to find good Chinese food we decided to try carry out today for lunch. We've tried so many restaurants in south/southwest county I can't even count. Finally a keeper. The staff was so sweet and friendly. The food was delicious! And the price was extraordinarily reasonable while maintaining high quality. We had two combo lunch specials, sweet sour pork and General Tso chicken. The pork had all the carrot, pepper, onion and pineapple that you expect but so many places leave it out. The chicken had a great sauce and a surprise of several veggies including mushrooms, carrots, water chestnuts and baby corn. This is definitely a restaurant we will keep in rotation and we look forward to trying other items in the future. read more

I have enjoyed eating there in the past, but now it is so dingy and seems run down. They have a fish tank that needs to be cleaned. I only get to go orders from them anymore. I ordered from there last night Nov 5. 2024. I ordered, Hot and Sour soup, which I love. I also ordered one of my favs, Pot Stickers. I ordered some Sweet and Sour Pork as well. The pork hardly had any vegetables or pineapple in it. My main problem last night was the BURNT Pot Stickers. I could smell the burn aroma on my drive home. Haven't been in awhile and decided to go today. Place was very dirty. The soy sauce bottle had so much sticky grimy stuff all over it, did not touch it!The server was very nice and brought things out fast. My food was just ok (shrimp fried rice). Crab Rangoon was just cream cheese, no crab. My husbands food was slimy (beef n broccoli) and he couldn't finish it. Not long after, it went right through him. Most likely will not return. read more

We went later at night, probably 7:00, and the restaurant was nearly empty. Our server was amazing, so kind and quick with getting us anything we might need. He even brought us an entire bucket of fortune cookies and told us to take as many as we wanted. The food was simply magnificent. I ordered the shrimp fried rice as well as an order of crab rangoons and I can confidently say they were the best crab rangoons I have ever had. How can I be nice about what I experienced? Um, well. Okay.... older folks have really different taste buds than those younger than (I'll say 60 year olds). I came here for a to go order because my mother said she liked the food. I ordered something I knew they couldn't mess up. I ordered from the Luncheon menu , #25 Honey Dipped Chicken wings which is served with fried rice, crab Rangoon, seasonal fresh fruits and a fortune cookie. Lord Jesus was I forever wrong. (Look at the photo). They gave me old, over cooked, dry chicken wings... no hint of honey... not even a shimmer of something shiny. No, it was not hot. Barely warm. Fried rice, this was basically some white rice they poured sauce over and let sit over night. I don't remember seeing any Crab Rangoon. There definitely was no seasonal fresh fruit nor a fortune cookie! I was on my 30-minute lunch break from school, ordered said thank you and left. Some folks will say, oh that's a racist Asian restaurant. Possibly. Maybe I looked like someone they didn't like. Or perhaps they were busy or just lackadaisical. Either way. Here is your evidence. I feel like the 3 1/2 star average rating is about right for sesame. I ordered for carry-out last night because I was craving crab Rangoon. It's been many years since I last ate at sesame. It used to be my husband's family's go-to for a Chinese dinner out and I remember it being pretty good. The online ordering process was incredibly easy and smooth. Pick-up was also really easy and friendly. The restaurant was very quiet and empty, but it looked like they were doing a decent carryout business. I ordered crab Rangoon, fried potstickers, chicken lo mein beef fried rice, and Szechuan chicken. The crab Rangoon were about average in terms of filling. I like them a little bit more stuffed, but these were fine. They were not sweet even a little bit. They were large and crispy and seemed freshly fried. I really wish they had come with a side of the red sweet-and-sour sauce, but I didn't ask for it so, my fault. The fried potstickers were very stuffed with meat filling. They were pretty decent and came with a side of potsticker sauce that mostly tasted like sweet soy. The beef fried rice mostly just tasted like soy sauce and was pretty greasy. Not much in terms of vegetables, egg, or beef. Expect mostly rice with your fried rice. The lo mein, on the other hand, was mostly vegetables and chicken. The vegetables were fresh and well cooked and the chicken was nice white meat and tasted good. I would love if there was an ordering option for plain lo mein because my daughter mostly just wants the noodles and sauce. For me, the lo mein was a good mix of ingredients but pretty boring flavor. The sauce again tasted mostly just like soy sauce. Some more complex flavors would be appreciated. The Szechuan chicken was pretty disappointing. From the menu, I thought it was going to be lightly breaded because it listed the hot braised chicken in the description. Also, Szechuan chicken is usually spicy and it was noted as spicy on the menu. There was zero spice in the Szechuan chicken. It had a sweet brown sauce and the chicken, although nice white meat, was not breaded at all. The majority ingredient in the Szechuan chicken was green bell pepper. We were pretty bummed about the Szechuan chicken. I'm not sure I'm going to be craving sesame again. My main reason for going was the crab Rangoon and they weren't good enough to go back again. It was average. Not bad not great. I will say that it seemed like the quality of their ingredients was pretty high. The vegetables, chicken, beef, and potsticker filling all seemed very fresh and well-made. It's really just their sauces that make this place average. If they could bump up the quality of their sauces, I would definitely go back. read more

Went for lunch with my dear friend and sister-in-law and was stunned by how quickly they served us. We were free to linger, but anyone who might need to rush back to their desk would have no trouble at all! I ordered the sesame chicken lunch special (comes with fried rice and a crab Rangoon) and she gasped the Mongolian chicken. Both were excellent. The hot tea was also a treat on a wintery day. This was my favorite chinese restaurant in St. Louis for a couple decades. The last several times I've gone here it's just been awful food though. Today I may have learned the cause: according to other Yelpers they're under new ownership & management. Whether that's true or not, they have ruined my favorite menu items. Ordered orange chicken. It's an overwhelming amount of breading and barely detectable, small bits of chicken. This was my favorite thing on the menu but they just can't make right anymore. They also don't use as much sauce as they used to so it's drier. Bleh. Also ordered hot braised shrimp and tried that first actually. I took a bite of it thinking I had opened the orange chicken (they look similar) and it too was an insane amount of breading with tiny pieces of shrimp. The most messed up part about it was that I thought I was eating the orange chicken and that the chicken was just really tough. I then realized it was shrimp after opening the container with orange chicken and couldn't help but laugh. Take this garbage off the menu ASAP. It's just a shame... had I reviewed this restaurant in the past it would have been an easy 5 star. But now? I will not be coming back, and I truly am disappointed that it's come to this. Sesame is one of those eat-in Chinese restaurants I thought have been long gone. Mostly, all I see are either buffets or those small fast Chinese food places. Here they'll let you sit down, bring tea for you to enjoy, and provide friendly and efficient table service. It's been a year since our first visit and I don't even remember what I ordered anymore but I remembered the place serving freshly prepared delicious food that when the Chinese food craving hit, we thought of this place again. It was busy at 6pm on a Thursday but got seated immediately and tea and water were brought to the table. We started with some pot stickers. The flavor was good but I thought the dough could have stayed cooking a while longer as there were some parts that were a little too gooey for my liking. I ordered the special lo mein. It tasted a lot better and fresher than other places and they gave me 3 meals worth for less than $10! I should have been more adventurous and tried a different dish but the lo mein sounded really good and I wasn't disappointed. I also tried some of the General Tso's chicken and I am so inclined to say it's the best I have ever had. Yes, yes... It really was. The flavors were quite fantastic together. Not spicy but very flavorful! I am definitely ordering that dish next time. The inside of the restaurant is what you would imagine an eat-in Chinese restaurant to look like with some decor and well-spaced tables. The place does get pretty busy in the early evenings but they tend to manage. They keep the place clean and the employees are nice. Will I be back? I'm sure of it. read more
