This didn't have much flavor. The wings were also disappointing. For 7.99, you get 4 wingettes. Not even whole wings...wasn't expecting that for the price. Good amount of meat on them but an indescribable smell (I think it was either the sauce) and they didn't taste like they were freshly fried. A no frills, mom and pop Chinese restaurant that has a few Korean dishes on the menu. The restaurant is right on Long Point, and is in an unsuspecting building. You can call in an order ahead of time, but it doesn't take long if you order in the store. I had the beef bulgogi with fried rice, which included onion rings. I also ordered the general tsos. The portions were great, especially for the price. Definitely worth a try if you're in the area, and craving food on a budget. read more

You can dine in but it's not much on the inside so I would take it to go. We got General Tso and Sesame Chicken. We loved both entree's, the fried rice is so good I highly recommend. This place is an institution -- something like 50 years running, which says a lot about a restaurant in a market as competitive as Houston's. No-frills spot with amazing Chinese food with a Korean/pan-Asian twist to it. You can't go wrong with most menu options, and you get a lot of food. Overall this place was solid. I found the food rather average, but really good service. For example I just wanted water and they gave me a bottle of water for free. While we were waiting for our food they brought us some free onion rings. There's not much to the ambience of this place, it's kind of the definition of a hole in the wall. Lunch for two for less than $25 is hard to find these days, and even harder with quality service even if it is counter based. Right off Long point, this is a neighborhood favorite as a fast casual Chinese-Korean restaurant. Doesn't surprise me with the cheap prices and the inside decor. Food isn't the best but pretty good for Americanized Chinese/Korean cuisine. The hot spicy chicken has a nice kick to it with a decent amount of coated sauce. At only $7.99, it's a bargain and you receive a solid amount of food. They also gave us onion rings on the house which was nice of them. Our office just moved to this side of town and I am exploring restaurants for lunch. This is a treasure. Yes it looks kind of sketchy and the interior is not impressive HOWEVER the food is fantastic. The gentleman who took my order guided me to the terriyaki chicken. Great lunch, the chicken was hot and juicy, loved the "fried rice" and serverd with tempura onion rings - I added a side eggroll for only $1.25. It really seems more geared for take out as all are orders are served in styrofoam with plastic utensils but that made it easier for me to take the left over home (very generous portions). This dish made for delicious leftovers as well. However, I was a bit disappointed with the small cocktail shrimp they used, especially being in Houston, where I expected larger shrimp. Sesame Hut has a long-standing presence in the area, and it's evident why; I found them on Yelp's top 10 recommendations for grub. As a pleasant surprise, I received a complimentary order of onion rings after inquiring about their best dishes. I'll definitely be returning for another visit soon. While you can choose to sit and eat there, it seems that most people opt for takeout, which was convenient. The price was also reasonable, and those onion rings were absolutely fantastic. the staff at Sesame Hut were pleasant. Friendly and accommodating service can greatly enhance the dining experience. I've been going to Sesame Hut since 1985 when it was a staple at Northwest Mall. Unfortunately the mall shit it's door several years ago and so did Sesame Hut. They reopened close to the old Mall on Long Point. Small run down shopping strip, but they are there. Food is still awesome. The nostalgia of eating here when I visit Houston for work still bring a smile to my face after all of these years. I always order a dish off the menu called the combination stir fry with gravy. Is a gravy sauce cooked with vegetables, beef, chicken and shrimp over fried rice. Add some chili sauce to kick it up if you like spicy (sauces are available on the side, they don't cook it spicy) Ask them for this dish next time you visit. read more

OK, so I was engaging in a bit of nostalgia recently on Yelp when I ran across Sesame Hut on Long Point. "Could this be the same little cafe I went to in Northwest Mall's food court back in the 1980s as a teen?" I wondered. It sure is! Even down to the old neon sign in the place! Short version: A cute Mom-and-Pop throwback Chinese restaurant with a smattering of great dishes, big portions, friendly staff and Sirius XM 80's jams in the background. If you're in the northwest part of town, check it out! Long version: As a kid, I remember going to the Sesame Hut outlet in Northwest Mall and enjoying (back then) the piping-hot servings of bulgolgi, shrimp tempura, chicken teriyaki and mountains of fried rice with egg rolls. It made for a quick and tasty lunch in those New Wave 1980s days. Fast-forward 40 years and Sesame Hut is back in business as a stand-alone. I had to try it out for old time's sake. The first thing I noticed is that the place itself is located in a old converted Taco Bell building - you know, the original kind from the 1970s with the stucco walls, tiled roofs and a spot overhead for the famous bell. By the way - that's another thing I miss: going to the old-school Taco Bell for an enchirito (remember those?) and Frito burritos. You know, back when they were made with fresh ingredients, and not the packaged ca-ca that they use today? But I digress. Once inside, the menu is pretty obvious - it's printed in BIG LETTERS over the cash register. For those of you who either lived in Rio Linda or went to public school (or both), there are pictures of the food on the opposite wall so you can identify what you want to eat without looking like the village idiot. One day when it was still winter outside, I tried the bulgolgi. It was the first bulgolgi (Korean barbecue) I'd eaten since Sesame Hut closed. I was prepared for massive disappointment. I was wrong. It tasted as great as ever! Juicy chunks of lean beef in the tasty black sauce that I remembered so well. I almost wept with nostalgia. Along with it came the perfect mountain of fried rice - piping hot - and the crunchiest, tastiest egg roll I've ever had since the Go-Go's had a #1 hit. A few weeks later, I was in a fried-food mood - we all get those from time to time, especially if we're dieting - so I ordered the shrimp tempura since I remember how tasty it used to be. Would it also take me back to those glorious days when Reagan was in office and everyone was talking like Moon Unit Zappa? Two words: IT DID. Picture attached to make my point. As Christine K pointed out in her previous well-written review, the standout item with the shrimp tempura was those perfectly deep-fried onion rings. There wasn't a drop of excess oil clinging to them (or the shrimp) and they were piping hot. The manager was also nice enough to provide some extra dipping sauce. I have to point out that everything here is made fresh and to order, so make sure to arm yourself with some patience. Just let them take your order, sit down with your drink and listen to some Hall & Oates, Fleetwood Mac and other early 1980s jams that we Gen-X people venerate so well. If I have to deduct a star, it's simply because of the location and the calorie content - nobody can eat fried foods every day and not look like Michael Moore. Plus, the neighborhood is a bit sketchy and the parking situation is pothole-laden. Still, don't let that deter you from taking a time machine back to those glorious early 1980s with some Chinese comfort food! Like, totally! read more

I really wanted to like this restaurant as the owner operator is super nice; however, my chicken and vegetable takeout had less than a tenderloin portion (a sliver) of chicken in it! It was definitely less than a protein portion. Of course, I didn't realize this until I got back to my hotel and I didn't want to take it back for them to correct. The food itself was overly salty without much other flavor. People must like this place for its low prices, but it's not even worth that to me. Super fresh and not your ordinary Chinese fast food place. The flavors are more authentic and you know that because less is more, meaning they don't over flavor the dishes like your typical American Chinese fast food place. You know it's a good Chinese place when the dishes come out hot and you can control the flavor to your liking by adding the correct amount of soy sauce and other sauces to your liking. I got my food to go...and totally forgot it came with an egg roll.
