We went to Red Pepper after church one evening when I was craving some good Chinese food. It was our first time here and I can't wait to go back! Red Pepper is located in a shopping center, tucked into the right corner. It's a small restaurant but there is plenty of parking due to the shopping center location. We arrived around 7:30PM on a Sunday with only one other patron dining, but quickly the restaurant got busy with others arriving and plenty of order pickups. The staff was out of their way friendly to us, which is what I would expect from a locally owned business but don't always receive. They were excellent! We learned that RP has been opened over 30 years in the area - for Houston, that's another mark of a great place in my book. I ordered a wonton soup and general tso's chicken. The soup was fresh with a great broth; I liked that the restaurant also brought some soy sauce and spice to add to it which was a nice touch. My chicken though was really good! Couldn't taste the honey at all. 0/5 Orange chicken sauce was good, but the chicken was cut in slices and fried which made it very tough and dry. 1/5 Lo mein had a lot of meat, but the serving size was really small. Lacked noodles. 1/5 Crab Rangoon/cheese puff thing...it was flat. The sweet & sour sauce was orange and didn't taste right. The way they fried it made it soggy and not crunchy. There was no crab in it nor tasted of it. 0/5 The service was meh. The guy helping us wasn't too friendly. Ambience was weird...? The interior looked more like an office than a restaurant. Absolutely solid Chinese food in a very cozy setting. Red Pepper is the definition of a mom and pop Chinese food spot. With only about 15-20 tables it's a very cozy spot to get some pretty classic takes on Chinese food. What got me the most as a first impression was the retro vibe of the locale. Pastel colored walls, the furniture that reminded me of a 70s airport lounge and the very 80's paintings hung up about. Service is no nonsense and to the point. The best part was getting the drinks served in oversized containers! And the food was awesome. We tried the Orange Chicken, which was different from how other restaurants do it, with actual orange peel in the sauce. The Beef and Broccoli, which was no frills, a General Tso that was delicious and a mixed fried rice. We left nothing behind. There was a very classic feel to the dishes, and it felt very 'clean' in terms of how we felt afterwards. The quality seemed to be a step above other hole in the wall Chinese food spots. So first of all I just want to say that this restaurant isn't terrible but it's definitely not the best place around. So the restaurant is definitely... "cozy" inside, that's all I'll say. What I like about this place is that it's a sit down and order Chinese restaurant which I like, I do not like buffet type places. What I don't like it that: 1.) They do not give free refills. I mean c'mon it's 2025, what restaurant doesn't give free refills? 2.) The food isn't terrible but it's definitely not worth the prices they charge. I'd say it's mediocre at best. 3.) It's dead. Now, granted, it WAS a Sunday evening but still, definitely said something about how many people are "rushing" to get in the doors. 4.) The server was polite enough but didn't go above and beyond or anything like that which is fine not really too many gripes about that. 5.) Server said dumplings would he out in 10. I stopped in for lunch and was going to get it to go but decided to stay. They have a lunch menu that includes soup, rice, and eggroll and a drink, which is nice. I ordered baby shrimp and broccoli and chose wonton soup. The water or tea is served in giant containers which is kind of kitch but it's hot so it worked. The soup was tasty with fresh Chinese cabbage on top and a hand made wonton. Lunch was huge! It had to be a half pound of shrimp is delicious, freshly made sauce with bits of fresh ginger in it. And the broccoli was fresh and Al dente. I mixed it with the shrimp and sauce and it was delicious. The food is always fresh. All your favorite Chinese classics at their best because you can taste that it's from scratch and made fresh. Their staff is very attentive when you dine in and it's always fast when you order out. They are incredibly consistent and hardworking and deserve the recognition so I made sure to share love on all their pages. FYI they're conservative with salt/soy but the flavors are all there, just ask for more. Sidenote - they take a lot of pride in their restaurant. The ambiance is the nostalgic because it feels like you're in the 90s. The decor and furniture is in preserved condition, it almost feels surreal. I have been going to this place for more than 15 years, either to sit down, usually for lunches; or for takeout. I cannot recall the last time that I was disappointed. Their lunch menu is generous. The dinner menu expands the generous portions. I love their chicken with cashew nuts and the tangy, spicy chicken dish as well. Egg rolls are always freshly cooked, the hot & sour soup is my favorite and at home can retain lasting freshness for a week. The dining room is highly simplified, but always clean. I give this place 3.5 stars for a quick lunch option with good service. I came here with my husband for a late lunch and had no idea how tiny this restaurant is. There are some tables outside, but it's July and who sits outside at 1pm in Houston in the middle of summer? We sat inside and one table became free. The guys who work here are used to people who need to be in and out quickly as they came over and acted really rushed. I realized they weren't rushing us but just trying to be cognizant of our lunch hour. Service was quick throughout the meal. I started with egg drop soup and it was pretty good. I had the General Tso's chicken lunch special which comes with fried rice, a spring roll, and green beans. The green beans were decent, the rice was good, and the chicken was quite good. The egg roll was a let down and seriously mushy inside. I love egg rolls and I wish it had been better. RED FLAG WARNING TO ALL POTENTIAL RED PEPPER CUSTOMERS! A little history here: Due to my job I rarely have an opportunity to go to this Red Pepper Restaurant; so, when I went on 2/3/2021 I ordered Orange Chicken to go. Upon ordering, I specifically stressed to the cashier to please make sure to tell the cooks I chose steamed rice because they had given me fried rice 2 times in a row in the past. The man gave me an odd look and scurried away. A few minutes later my food was handed to me in a bag with my drink. I don't like eating cold food so I parked close by and began to eat my meal. NOW FOR THE REASON FOR THIS POST: I ate the soup then started my entre and my rice. Never thinking I would find a piece of metal in my mouth with my rice! I spit it out! I immedately drove back to show the man at the counter. He said, "ohhh, thats just the scooper! Here I'll show you." He walks calmly to the back and returns with an ice cream scooper and points to the missing area of the tool and tried to down play my complaint and he just shook his head. I begged him to say sorry. He hesitated. Just asked me what I wanted him to do. I realized there were several couples in the fining area and so as upset as I felt I was still trying not to ruin the atmosphere for them, I tried to stay calm but firmly and clearly said, "you can start with a simple sorry sir" It was clear he was bothered because he was curt with me.. He apparently didn't like that I returned to show him my findings. My heart was pounding out of my chest at this point. So I said, "just give me my money back please. Now." He said, "I can give you another meal?" I said, "Absolutely not! I don't trust anymore food from here. Your cooks were careless with my 1st meal. Just tell me, how could your cooks not realize a dark grey metal was in the white rice? No, give me my money back I really have to get back to work." He rolled his eyes at me and proceeded to give me $10 and change. Then I asked, "why are you returning ten when I gave you $13 and change a few minutes ago?" And he has the audacity to say, "you have drink with meal. Where is drink? I return money for food only!" I gave him a stern face and said, "ohhhh, that is so much more important to you? A drink is more important to focus on than what I just showed you? Look at this! (I grabbed the metal and placed it in his face) Thissss metal was in my mouth! You're so lucky I'm not pursuing this any further and I'm just asking you to say sorry. Can you say SORRY? Just give me whatever you want. Just know you shouldn't pretend thus isn't a serious situation. You have to understand this is not right. Say sorry, Sir! You still haven'tsaid it. That shouldhave been the first thing out of your mouth but instead I'm schooling you on basic manners here!" He finally grabbed a 10 dollar bill and 50 cents and gave it to me. But when this Red Pepper Restaurant didn't appreciate how I WAS NOT yelling or causing a big scene (which odds would lean to as the norm for anyone in my situation) I was shocked that he minimized the entire thing yesterday. I figured out that he basically didn't care! One of his eye balls was blood shot red and I don't know why but I say this because I was the only one looking straight at him while he would glance at me as I stood there. That is not how a true manager handles this kind of situation. So I write this review in the hopes that customers know how cold this manager can treat you if you choose to find something wrong in your food. I know the they may be a popular place to many in the Galleria area. Heck, I know my boss eats there regularly with his wife. So, I shared my experience with him and he said, "Yeah, I've seen that man at the counter. Its usually 1 of 2 up there. He's the younger one. I've witnessed him be rude to other customers when I've sat close to the door. I've heard him talk disrespectfully on more than one occasion but I say to myself that I can't interfere if I'm not directly involved with the issue. I had planned on looking for another place to go to and being that your steamed rice metal could have been my plate, I've decided to find a new place now. I don't want my hard earned money going to a heartless place like that anymore." And he shook his head. I hope anyone that reads this can take a moment to question your next visit to Red Pepper and ask yourself if you feel good about contributing to a place which harbors bitter discrimination and poor customer service. My wife pointed out Red Pepper when we were looking for some Chinese food in the area so we dropped in. Red Pepper has been around for decades and the interior matches the claim. Furniture and decor is a time capsule of the late 80's which was fun. Service was prompt and friendly enough. The drinks are served in to-go soup containers which definitely got my attention. Also, like all traditional Chinese restaurants, they enforce the charge you by the can soda policy. Food was very average but it hit the Chinese food craving just fine. I had lo mein and it came out as expected with no complaints. I didn't find any bugs in my food like other yelp reviewers and if I were to read those reviews before walking in, I would have probably walked right out the door. Hope they got that problem fixed! Long story short, Red Pepper offers the usual suspects of the Chinese takeout menu at a fair price. I was hoping Red Pepper would prove me wrong, but it was just as mediocre as every other takeout spot in a 2 mile radius. On the bright side, they have a decent lunch special until 4 pm, even on weekends! - entree, soup, egg roll and fried or white rice.
