I can see this place is a great family friendly place. The staff was amazingly friendly and knowledgeable of the menu (as well as the neighborhood) my adult daughter and I picked different tacos to sample and liked 50% of our order. I loved the bbq duck tacos! She loved the fish tacos! We didn't order much as we just wanted something light. The decor was bold and festive! It looks like the type of place the young and middle age crowd would frequent. The have a full bar and it was packed. tl;dr probably a great spot for St. Louis/MO terms, is it like CA Mission Tacos - no. However, you're in St. Louis, so what do you expect? Food is tasty, and price is average. Get the churro with chocolate dipping. If you're looking for authentic taco spot, then probably not. So i'm told that Mission Taco Joint is created with San Francisco's Mission Taco shops in mind. I can KIND of see that, but not really. I get that MTJ refers to its tacos as "street tacos" but not really. Real street tacos are BASIC, with no frills or fancy ingredients. Read: authentic street tacos do not have arugula in their tacos. Also street tacos are smaller, literally two bites. The brisket taco is better than the carne asada taco. The shrimp taco and fish taco were just okay - not amazing. Would have preferred real mexican elote (read on the cob versus corn kernels). Guacamole was a small portion, I assume avocados are pricey here? Taco prices are actually higher than I expected too. Save room churro with chocolate dipping. The Delmar Loop location of Mission Taco Joint is busy enough these days that they're pulling that thing where they pretend that their app-based reservation system malfunctioned. You reserve a table hours in advance, only to get there and find out that they don't have any record of you reserving a table. If you want, you can stand outside on the corner for two hours like a dumbass. Obviously, they'd rather just give your table to someone who wandered in off the street without a reservation. They figure at least some of the people with reservations won't show up anyway, and if they do maybe magic will happen. It was no big deal. My mom was meeting us there. When she drove past, on Delmar, we hopped in her car and hightailed it to the Soulard location, risking life and limb to jaywalk across the busy street. (Thug life was in full effect.) We weren't sweating the fact that the Soulard location is owned by the same scammers as the one in the Loop, because Mexican food. I was half expecting to see someone from "Trops" urinating in the street near the Soulard location, but the area proved to be relatively desolate. There was still a large crowd inside. We probably got there just in time. We reserved a table when we left the Loop and didn't have to wait when we arrived. The Soulard location is brighter on the inside than the one in the Loop and noisy as all hell. I wasn't sweating the volume, because if my parents had anything novel to say to me over dinner it would have been the first time since the (first?) Clinton administration. Your mileage may very. The menu at Mission Taco Joint is similar to one you might find at a legit taqueria, out by the airport, but presumably more fancy. Essentially, they carry tacos, burritos and tortas, plus appetizers and a list of mostly tequila-based cocktails. I of course immediately set about figuring out which cocktail I'd have. I'd already pregamed a little bit, but I wanted to get nice and lit. They carry a drink called the Zombie, which looked like it might have more alcohol in it than anything else on the menu. It costs a few dollars more than any of the other drinks, and supposedly they'll only sell you two per visit. The disclaimer seemed like it may have been there for psychology purposes, to trick people into spending a few dollars extra on a drink. I don't know if it really had that much more alcohol than any of the other drinks, but it had about as much alcohol as you can put in a drink and have it not taste like sterno. In fact, the Zombie is served with a garnish that consists of half a lime filled with over-proof rum that's been set on fire. I was instructed by the server to blow out the fire when I was ready to get my drink on and dump the rum in with the rest of the rum. Pro tip: I wouldn't let it burn too long, because that might decrease the potency of the alcohol. I only let mine burn long enough to take a picture of it. #priorities For apps we went with the the queso chorizo and the carne asada fries, or whatever they're called. I don't know what I was expecting the queso chorizo to be, but finding out it's just a cup of melted cheese and some chips was kinda anticlimactic. It's mostly just cheese. There was only the slightest hint of chorizo. Charles Grodin in the movie Midnight Run would have been disappointed. Truth be told, the carne asada fries weren't as big as my little brother (who doesn't work there or anything) described them, but they were pretty damn good: french fries, with gobs of melted cheese, cubes of steak, quacamole and what have you. Lately, I've been wanting a burrito like Bobby Brown wants drugs, but I ended up going with tacos. I like the fact that you can get a few different kinds, and the taco of the month--deep fried shrimp with mango salsa--seemed especially tempting. I got one of those, plus a chorizo and a beef brisket. Briefly, since I don't get paid for this: The shrimp taco was the one to beat. It's hard to describe it without being inappropriate. Go there each month until they put it back on the menu, if necessary. The chorizo taco was, as Rachel Ray would say, dee-lish, and partly made up for the minimal amount of chorizo in the appetizer. Only order beef brisket from legit barbecue places like Pappy's and Sugarfire. Even the mighty Mexicans (er, in this case, white people appropriating Mexican food) can't make it as good. We finished off the evening with churros y chocolate. I'm not sure if that's what they're called on the menu, but I had a Spanish textbook called "Churros y Chocolate" when I was in the sixth grade, and I've been meaning to try them ever since. It's been 24 years. We didn't even order them, but our server gave us some for free because my mom told him it was my birthday. She does that in every restaurant we go to. Mission Taco Joint just opened in Soulard earlier this week and I couldn't be more excited! The bf and I decided to have our Friday night "date night" at MTJ this week. When we arrived we were greeted by the hostess and she was quickly about to show us to our table-we didn't even have to wait! The place was busy, but it was a steady busy not an overwhelming busy. When we sat at our table our server came over right away with water. He showed us the menus for drinks (drafts, bottles, and cocktails) and gave us a few minutes to decide. When he came back I was ready for a Raspberry Caipirinha and the bf went with a draft of Pacifico; both great choices and refreshing. We ordered some chips and salsa and looked over the menu to decide on our meals. I ordered a chicken taco, a grilled fish taco, and an order of the street corn; the bf ordered the brah'rito. A few minutes later our food arrived and our server made sure to check in on us a few times to make sure we had everything we needed. He brought us some fresh chips since we were out and let us know that he was happy to help if we needed anything else. I really enjoyed the tacos I ordered and the street corn was amazing! You gotta try it if you go! Our server was really great and even though he was busy he still made it by a few times to make sure we were good with drinks. There was even a guy walking around filling up water glasses which was great! Kudos to MTJ for their amazing service. Wanna know the best part? This place was pretty alright. We're from the West coast, so we love tacos and Mexican food. The empanadas were bomb. The tacos were fine, not great on the flavor and seasoning side. Not bad, just plain. Corn had no flavor, no salt. Server Nicole was super nice and so was everyone else. Great drinks and margs. Good choices were made when we decided to come here after a hot day at City Museum. Loved the exterior/interior right away, this place had a laid-back vibe. Our server was pretty nice. The Carne Asada fries with the steak is what set it off! An awesome guy brought it out to us, all pumped up, and first bite it I realized the hype. They were AMAZING! We were able to split a burrito between two adults, and everyone felt comfortably full. Bonus: they are part of the no plastic straws movement, which we are about to. Wow, so many great reviews here! So many people rave about this place. I'm not sure if it's just me or I came in on a bad day but the food was not amazing as many people described...in fact most of the food seem so bland and overcooked. The way our server described it, mint, cilantro, lamb, omg it sounded so delicious! but truthfully it was flavorless and overcooked. who overcooks lamb? You couldn't taste the cilantro or mint either and those two can be overpowering sometimes. Carne Asada taco: overcooked steak...again who eats well don't dried steak? Baja Fish Taco: there's were actually good, downfall they skipped on one of the tacos, barely any fish. Mofu Tofu: this taco wasn't amazing but not bad either. it's really hard to mess up tofu, just ad hot sauce and jalapeños and you're set. Beef Brisket Birria: the brisket was surprisingly not dried out at all. favor was a bit bland but with hot sauce it balanced it out a bit. Sides: street corn: the corn was pretty darn good! one of the best corns I've ever had! our server had recommend this to us and I'm happy she did. it was great! Chile Crusted Potato Fries: very disapointing!!!! PLEASE DO NOT GET! They charge you $4 for a plate of fries + 50 cents for a chipotle like dipping sauce. the portion of this is half of the fries you get with carne asada fries. I would rather spend the extra $4.50 and get another order of carne asada fries which comes with a lot more. deff. not worth the price for a side of fries. Mission Taco continues to be one of my favorite taco joints in St. Louis. I'm partial to their Soulard location which is situated in a beautifully restored old brick building. It's even better on a warm day when they open the garage door looking onto the sidewalk. I especially enjoy the $2 taco late night happy hour where I can load up on my favorite Baja fried fish tacos and mango shrimp tacos. It's difficult to find a good fish taco in St. Louis, but this is one of the best in my opinion. The creamy street corn is an excellent side dish packed with flavor and the Tortas are crispy and delicious. I give them bonus points for supporting the local Mexican Bakery (Diana's Bakery) which supplies the bolillo bread for the tortas. MTJ also makes and bottles their own hot sauces and they don't hold back on the spice. One of the newer sauces they created is called "taco sauce". I'm hopeful that they will keep this one as an option. It's not spicy, but it works well with several of the tacos. 5 stars for great food and service! read more

Mission Taco was one of the first places I ate when I moved to STL in 2014. I lived right near the Loop location, and it was always hip and busy. They also had yummy and affordable options for a grad student, including $2 tequila shots during their late night happy hours, which I never actually indulged in, but always sounded like fun. What really stands out to me about Mission Taco is their creative approach to the taco flavors and ingredients. They mix unique, compatible flavors, and bring in less common items to the mix, such as cactus. You can find something as a veggie or meat lover, and be happy. I only recently started branching out from the tacos, and my new obsession is their steak frites - basically steak nacho fries. I even unsuccessfully attempted to make them at home during quarantine. I learned my lesson and will look into doing some curbside soon! In my opinion, this is not the place you come for authentic Mexican food, but rather for a fun, satisfying take on Mexican-American chic. We had a friendly server and quick turnaround between ordering and our food coming out. I ordered the South Beach burrito without a tortilla. I also only wanted it smothered in cheese instead of both ancho sauce and cheese. They added in some arugula, which was nice to have some extra veggies in there. We're addicted to tacos so mission taco had been my list for a while. Especially after my husband came home from work raving about it a couple of months ago. We stopped in after strolling the farmers market and the restaurant wasn't crowded on a Saturday for lunch. We ordered an appetizer of chips and salsa and I was impressed with the amount of chips (2 baskets) that we received. The salsas were really good, but I don't recall which ones were on tap for today. Our kids, the type that eat meat and cheese only tacos, were with us and our waitress was happy to offer grilled chicken and cheese tacos and carne asada and cheese tacos. The kids loved them and ate every bite. The adults ordered habanero chicken, shrimp, and grilled fish tacos with a side of street corn. My husband LOVES the street corn. The grown ups' tacos were delish! The shrimp was my favorite and I'll probably order two of those next time. My wife had the corn fritters and Chicken flautas apps as a meal. The fritters were good, but the flautas were fantastic and too much for my wife to eat (so we got to try them, too). The other two of us had a selection of tacos. 3 was plenty for each of us. I love spicy food, so I went for the Green Inferno and I got the beef tinga and beer-battered Baja Fish. All were good, but none were so good that I wouldn't try some of the others next time I'm there. My son had the mango-hop-anero shrimp. He liked the yucatecan pork and the Baja fish, but said he might get just the shrimp next time because it was so good. We walked in shortly after 10pm and excitedly read the sandwich board extolling $2 tacos and tequila from 10pm-midnight! I asked the host if that applied to ALL that tacos...and it does in fact apply to all of them on the menu! I got extra excited about our late dinner. We were seated pretty quickly, considering how busy it was. People must love those $2 tacos! The thing that took the longest was getting our drinks after they were ordered. This is my only complaint....we didn't have to wait too terribly long to order...but when the order was for a drink, whether it was a cocktail, a beer or a soda, it took ages for them to come. They might benefit from a third bartender on weekends to cut down on this issue....my beer took so long, I asked to cancel the order....and juuuust as the server was telling them to nix it...they were finally pulling it. My Airbnb host brought me out since Mission Taco has a Taco Tuesday deal, where tacos are $2 each (and I think tequila is also $2 a shot). We end up ordering one of each taco on the menu, fries, and tequila shots. I actually didn't even get a chance to look at the taco menu thoroughly, but hey, $2 tacos from the best taco place in town...that's an opportunity I'm not willing to pass up. [I stand corrected: the $2 tacos and shots are a late night happy hour deal that happens EVERY NIGHT! This place just keeps getting better and better!] The fries were delicious, but my host specifically told me to try each taco since that was what I came for. This is were it gets vague...every taco was amazing! I couldn't tell you which was which, but they were all good. This might be troublesome for the next time I visit...guess it'll just have to be during Taco Tuesday again! I'm not a fan of tequila, but I was able to drink 3 shots fine without any regrets later.
