Worst location for black people, black women especially. The short old man that works here attitude is horrible. He claimed he was a supervisor. Horrible representation! I asked for water after waiting for 15 mins patiently with no greeting nothing and he instantly got an attitude and demanding my order and starting yelling loudly while throwing his hands up as if I was bothering him. I felt unsafe as a black woman at this location so I decided to leave. I felt attacked by this man! I will be gathering his information and pressing charges for running in my face while I was trying to speak with someone over him and attempting to leave! Black women stay away! Sad part of it all this use to be my favorite Tuesday spot, this isn't my first time here, i was just here with friends a few weeks ago. Went on a Saturday evening around dinner time with the fam. There were at least several tables open, so we did not have to wait. Service was decent, and our waitress checked on us several times throughout the meal. Chips were fresh and warm and served with generous amounts of salsa. Tacos al pastor were piled high with meat and came with a mystery spicy sauce (watch out for the heat on this!). Also had two tamales which were pretty tasty. Fajita plates came out sizzling and smelled of amazing caramelized onions and peppers. Mexican rice and refried beans were a little generic but fine. Casual ambiance that is good for families and kids. Plenty of parking out front. Overall decent place for your average Mexican food fix. read more

We decided on el Maguey, I called to place the order for pick up. A "lady" answered and when I told her I wanted to place an order for pick up she proceded to tell me, why dont you cook at home. I was taken aback and said I'm sorry? And she replied oh no tell me what's your order. At that point I thought maybe she was talking to someone on her end so I gave her my order then she asked me, are you coming home from work? I was silent thinking for sure she is talking to someone on her end, she proceeded to tell me, very rudely, im talking to you the one whose order im taking, so again im confused as to why the rudeness, but I finished placing my order and proceeded to go pick it up. Once there I said to the greeter im here to pick up my order and I asked who took this order and I asked to speak to the manager. The greeter realized who I was and said oh im sorry i confused you with someone else. I proceeded to insist on speaking to the manager and was told the manager wasn't there and wouldn't be there until 9pm, which by the way is the time the restaurant closes. She proceeded to apologize and said she wouldn't charge me for my habiscus drink (which upon getting home i saw my recipt and saw it was charged) I proceeded to give her some advice that next time she was on the phone with someone to make sure they are who she thinks they are before speaking to them that way. But I know she lied, she didn't confuse me with anyone else because when she asked if I was on my way home from work, she spoke as if to a stranger, she said, Im speaking to you the one whose order im taking, had she truly confused me with someone wouldn't she have referred to said person by their name? Either way that isnt any manner of speaking to someone, a customer of the business you work at, even if you know them, they are still a customer. I wasn't begging for food, I was placing an order, to pay for with my hard earned money!! I will NEVER again frequent this business. We've been several times and haven't really been disappointed yet. The food is always on par for what you'd expect of any american/mexican food. Same food, different location. But I do recommend this restaurant, this location at least. The chips (are warm and fresh) and salsa (not chunky, but not soupy) are really good. The margarita dip is nice with queso, pico, and ground beef. Oh!! This last time I got a few al pastor tacos and they load UP on the pineapple. I had to wade through it a little because they were huge chunks and there was a lot of them. Ok, hold up. Let me tell you about the spicy oil/sauce that came with it. Holy. Shit. I was given a little dish of the spicy pepper oil, whatever it's called and put a little on the first taco. Ok, a little too much. Burned my entire face off. It was soooooooooo good! But unless you can easily handle spicy I say take it easy on your first bite. Again, the rest of the food is as expected. No big surprises. Their food is unremarkable, but it is close to me so I eat there when I don't want to drive far. Last time was at lunch on a weekday. I had the mixed lunch fahitas and the meat was tasty. The tortillas were soft and warm, but the sides were disappointing. There was a small amount of shredded lettuce with a little sour cream streamed over it and a few grilled onions, no grilled bell peppers, and small amount of refried beans.Not enough of any of it except the meats, and I am a light eater. Most Mexican restaurants serve gracamole with their fahitas, so I asked for some guac. My waitress brought me a hand-sized taco shell of guac which had small diced bell pepper, not cooked, in it. It was not tasty to me and they charged me an extra $5.99 for that. Next time I will drive a little farther because if I'm going to pay over $20. plus tip for lunch, I at least want tasty food. read more

Oh my my. We stopped for lunch and I'm so glad we did. Prices are reasonable and you get a good amount of food and in this economy that is so welcome. I have been to other Mexican restaurants here in St.Louis but I haven't tried their enchiladas after being dissatisfied at other establishments. Being from south Chicago I know a good enchilada when I taste one. Today I took the plunge again and I'm happy to say it was delicious along with everything else. I will return often. I went on a weekday evening and the place was dead. Only one other table was occupied while I was there. So, no waiting!! Can't wait to come back in the summer to sit on the patio (something the Watson location can't offer). The menu is different here than what I remember. I didn't see my "go-to" dish on the menu and the waitress was still able to get me what I wanted without second thought. The food was served very quickly and was very hot. Pretty average to below average meal here. I ordered a chicken chimichanga which was plated with guac salad, pico, and served with rice and beans. I also had a pork enchilada a la carte. The chimi was only slightly crisp and had more of a burrito texture. It was covered with a small amount of cheese dip. The chicken filling was disappointing, as it was mostly a thick, single chunk of VERY dry chicken breast that was difficult to ingest without large amounts of water. I had to pull it out and shred it myself, then cover it with salsa and beans to eat it. (It was not the expected flavorful and moist seasoned shredded chicken with tomatoes and/or chiles , nor did it taste grilled). The rice and beans were good, as was the salsa, which was slightly spicy, and flecked with cilantro. The pork enchilada was odd. It was big chunks of chewy pork, in a very sweet almost bbq-like sauce. It was ok for a quick lunch, but the quality control here needs attention. I've been to this place twice now. The first time my server decided to keep part of my change (the coin part, which was close to a dollar) without asking me first. Strike one. The second time I went, they pressured me to order because they were closing soon (it was still an hour till their posted closing time). My friend was meeting me and running late. They closed the place 35 minutes early, preventing my friend and I from meeting up. Strike two. I also am fairly certain I have food poisoning from my taco salad, which tasted sort of off. Strike three. Other observations: -The service is not great. It feels like the place is run by teenagers, but not particularly responsible ones. -The food is "meh" at best. It's pretty expensive for the quality and quantity. -The margaritas are of variable quality, depending on who happens to pour the pre-mix into your glass. I do not recommend. At all. Drive to U-City to Mi Ranchito if you want good, standard tex-mex for a better price, or go to Mission Taco for roughly the same price for much, much better food. read more

Formerly El Toro, I decided to try this place based on liking the El Maguey on Chippewa. Food was extremely overpriced, the salsa was bland to the point that we had to dump Valentina in it, just to add some flavor. I had a cheese quesadilla that was minute and barely had any cheese! They do not have a happy hour on anything other than margaritas, which was exactly the same routine as El Toro, which was extremely disappointing. Place was empty and Judge Judy was blaring no music or ambiance at all. One of the staff members left, walked down to Little Caesars and came back with a pizza - I think that says it all. read more
