Visited this location a couple times this past spring/summer and I'm disappointed to say that the service and quality of food has taken a turn in the wrong direction. First, the prices have risen significantly since the pre-Covid days, which is to be expected, but the portion sizes or the quality of food have not changed to reflect the price change. I've had the spicy fried chicken taco both times and I don't taste much besides the spices. The brah-rito also doesn't taste like much bedsides the sauce it's smothered in. Finally, their margaritas only have a splash of tequila included, so you're better served getting drinks elsewhere. Finally this location seems to be chronically understaffed as the service time is quite lengthy, even for weekday lunch. In generally, you might be better served getting drinks/food elsewhere in the CWE. read more

I can't say enough about mission taco. It truly is one of the best restaurants in St. Louis. It's a unique twist on Mexican cuisine and so so good. The details on each taco create the perfect flavor mixture. My all time favorite taco is the fish taco. I could probably eat it everyday if I had the chance. Just as good as the one in the loop. The service was friendly and fast. My mom didn't know which cocktail she wanted so the bartender came out and explained the different options, such great customer service and completely unexpected for him to do that! We got the duck, Portobello mushroom, and grilled fish tacos. All had the right combo of fresh ingredients that complimented each other perfectly. The outdoor area was nice but seems to be limited. Confession Time: So, I really did not want to like this place. Like REALLY did NOT want to like this place. But alas, Mission Taco lived up to its extreme hype and I love it! I went to the CWE location this past Saturday for lunch. It was my first time eating at any of the Mission Taco locations. A couple years ago, I planned to go to the one in the Loop, but the hostess told us it would be an hour wait so we left. I came in to the restaurant wanting a mimosa of all things. I know, who goes to a taco restaurant for mimosas. I wanted brunch that day but didn't want to have a long wait anywhere, and I was in the CWE so I decided to finally give Mission Taco a try. My waiter, who was very kind and helpful, took my order for the mimosa. He came back a few minutes later and told me that they did not have champagne but that the bartender offered to mix OJ, white wine, and spritzer as an alternative. I declined and instead went for the frozen strawberry margarita. I was first offered a shot glass of hibiscus juice which is a flavor of their margaritas, before settling on the strawberry. My margarita was served in a tall glass (not a typical margarita glass), and it had a swirl pattern with the regular margarita, so not a full blended strawberry margarita. At this point, I was disappointed by how things were going and thought that I should've gone elsewhere, but I took a sip of the margarita and it was delicious so I decided to stay. I also ordered the chips and salsa. In case you're wondering, no, it is not free. It's $3 and comes with 2 different salsas, mild and hot. Both salsas were amazing! I like spicy food but within reason. That being said, I could not stop eating the hot salsa! It tasted fresh, like it was prepared that day in the restaurant. It had such good flavor! For my entree, I ordered the BBQ Duck taco, Mango Salsa Shrimp taco, and the Taco of the Day which was grilled chicken marinated in pineapples with cilantro. O EM GEE! They were all DE-LI-CIOUS! I'm not a fan of hard shell tacos and was nervous about how their tacos would be, but the shells were still slightly soft which I liked. All three tacos were full of flavor and looked beautiful in presentation! It was clear to see that this restaurant and its chefs and kitchen staff take good care and pleasure in making their food. I absolutely loved the food here! The ambiance of the restaurant is also very hip, trendy, and cool. This definitely makes for a cool hangout or fun place for a date. I will ABSOLUTELY return! I guess this place has injected new energy into this major Central West End intersection, although I still miss the interesting antique store that used to occupy this space. I've been here a couple of times and the food is ok. The inside atmosphere is pretty lively (and loud), service is very good. The last time we were there we started with guacamole and chips. The guacamole was ok and well-presented. Had the New Years Resolution burrito, which is a (whole) wheat tortilla filled with mushrooms, black beans and quinoa. Okay, St Louis did have some pretty good tacos!! I really liked this restaurant for the tacos, corn and SPICY salsa! Everything was flavored really well and the favorite taco would be the Shrimp. The fried chicken taco was on the dry side. If Hispanic food is hard to come by in the midwest, this place is definitely one of the better ones! Awesome art, outdoor seating and service was so nice. Mission Taco is a STL favorites. I've been here as early as the the first week I moved here, as recommended by a few STL natives. This location is in the heart of CWE and gets a lot of business. The tacos are decent but nothing out of the ordinary. They are exactly as described. Shrimp habanero is a crowd pleaser. I've been spoiled by authentic Mexican tacos, and sadly these just don't hit the spot for me. It's a good deal during late night happy hours. Every time I eat here the food and service is excellent. How do they do that? Well, you know the old saying..."Mine is not to question why. I have been to all of the mission tacos in St. Louis and I have had consistently interesting experiences at all of them. I have always gone later in the night and I usually don't have terrible service but dam this time was a whole new ball game. The whole time our server was great and very nice and nothing was her fault. Firstly it took the food a little over an hour for 15 tacos (which is their thing so it shouldn't take that long). Our server said the kitchen lost our ticket which I believe things happen in the kitchen I get it. Next, the manager on duty came to talk to us and I'm pretty sure she had no clue what was happening. But she tried to make it better by offering to buy us shots (which are I my 2 dollars) but we had already had shots and didn't want anymore. We asked if she would just take 2 dollars off a person (5 people who already got 2 dollar shots) and she acted like we asked her to pay for our whole meal. She came back and argued with us about the 2 dollars and tried to offer us more free drinks which we did not want. Finally out server came over and told us she covered bill. Which I guess was fine in the end. We ended up tipping the waitress for her trouble and leaving 2.5 hours later with a fun story and a reminder why we never go to Mission Taco. read more

Second time at mission taco joint and first time at this location. It wasn't too busy just after noon on a Tuesday for lunch. I ordered chips & salsa, a fried fish taco, and two shrimp tacos. My friends ordered everything from empanadas to portobello tacos to chofu tacos. Everything was delicious! I love that both regular and spicy salsas are offered with the chips and both were super tasty. But I was really here for the tacos.....yum! The fish taco was good, but I really love the shrimp tacos. The crispy shrimp + the sauce + the sweetness of mango = taco heaven. Arrived in St. Louis on the 18th after a drive, having planned to eat here for dinner based on the good reviews and the menu. The food is good. The bread on my torta was fresh and delicious. However, service is poor and you as a customer are simply not that important. I don't know if this is because so many restaurants also operate as full bars and are relying on nearby drunk college students who don't care that much, or it is a cultural thing about St. Louis. But you'll see this in a lot of restaurants in the Central West End area. After being seated, it took an unusually long time for our server to take a drink order, and again another long time to place our food order. After the food came out, my girlfriend never got her beer. When I flagged the server down about her beer, I'm pretty certain she rolled her eyes at me. It did eventually get to us, but we had to flag the server down for just about everything. On the other hand, the food runner and the person filling up water glasses were friendly and attentive and probably kept this from being a 2 star review. I'm at Mission Taco for the 1st time and I dont know what all the hype is about. I heard this place was good but it just alright. I visit friends in St. Louis a few times a year, and this is always a staple of our visit. They have a wrap around patio, which is dog friendly. However there is no covering, so if it starts raining (happened to me) you have no option for outdoor shelter. Over the course of a few visits, I've sampled a Torta, a burrito, tacos, street corn, chips & guacamole, and salsa - pretty much everything vegetarian on their menu. All was good, and the only constructive feedback I could give is on the chips and guacamole. The chips are not well salted and the portion of guacamole is pathetic for $7. We got 2 gigantic baskets of chips and about a cup (if that) if guacamole (which also needed salt). The real reason for 4 stars over 5? The service. Today it was SO SLOW. I know the patio was busy, but I shouldn't have to ask for a refill of water and the bill. I will definitely be back, sitting on the patio with my hounds. I just moved to St Louis and I've been looking for some quality Mexican food. Mission Taco isn't your typical Mexican restaurant though, as their menu mostly features more classier/gourmet cuisines. However, the food was nonetheless great. The carne asada was so perfectly cooked in the asada fries. One thing I would have liked would have been spicer tacos & salsa. This place is within walking distance to the Airbnb I'm staying at while in town. The menu looked good, so thought I'd try it out. I ordered 4 tacos, and I'm sorry to say, they were not good. They did vary with respect to goodness. The duck BBQ was kinda gross. The Birrios (brisket) was also gross. The Baja fish was decent, but nothing special. The shrimp hop-anero was ok, definitely nothing special. I left disappointed, because how do you screw up a taco? I'm not sure if the taco shells are Supposed to be hard or soft, because they were somewhere in between. The tacos lacked seasoning and fresh ingredients. This place is already poppin with good reviews. If you're looking for a modern, bar scene, and place with variety of flavors for tacos this is your place. Usually wait time necessary during busy nights at this location but food wait is typically faster. They have great presentation and options for tacos and appetizers. I've been back 3 times and it has been consistently good. The shrimp tacos, mushroom, and solid guacamole with warm chips! My fave :) Heard their burritos are bomb dot com- will give those a try next time. If you're into beer- they have a large selection and attentive bar staff. Excited to get back and try more tacos. This taco joint is a lovely scenery-filled stroll distance from Chase Plaza hotel. I arrived at a time when most people were likely still working, so the crowd was not there. However, during my visit there was a steady flow of customers to indulge in these popular tacos. I sat at the bar eagerly anticipating the taste of this highly reviewed food item. I ordered the Baja Fish that can either be prepared fried or wood fire grilled. I ordered one of each. One taco comes to an order. The duo salsa was good. The chips were better. The salsa wasn't bad, but I personally thought it was too thick. The red version was really, really spicy hot. I couldn't really enjoy it by itself. The green version was a lot milder (rather uneventful for the taste buds), but easier to consume for enjoyment. Being that the red version did taste good (just too spicy hot) & the green version rather uneventful, I decided to merge the two in hope of creating the perfect balance. It worked. The bartender said the red salsa was his favorite and he can handle the spicy flavor alone, so I'm sure it's a matter of personal preference. The chips, however, were really good. Thin and crispy with a great flavor. The chips weren't so thin that a slight dip into the salsa caused them to break off - HATE when that happens! The tacos came out rather quickly. And they were wonderful! The ingredients were fresh, crunchy, and bursting with an infusion of flavors. The sauce used was really pleasant. It didn't come with every bite, but the taste was a wonderfully delightful surprise when it came. Of the two (wood fire grilled vs. fried) versions the fried had the most flavor. So I ordered another fried. The two didn't quite satisfy my appetite, but the third did it. The third taco took longer to come out, which is OK. It tasted even more fresh! I took off two stars because I didn't find the employees to be very friendly. The bartender was half-heartedly attentive and friendly. It appeared that him and the other bartender were more interested in keeping their "casual" conversation going rather than making sure their customer is properly waited on and given the sort of customer service one would give a smile (and a star) to and come back for. I've usually gone to the Mission Taco in the Loop, but as Yogi Berra once said, "no one goes there anymore, its too busy". The location in the CWE is a nice diversion and I think I might be a little bigger. The tacos are excellent and they have a very good beer selection. South beach burrito is on another level and it's just as good with tofu subbed in. Your tacos are perfectly bite sized and even better as a late night snack. Killer location, plethora of seating, decent "Mexican" food. I'm giving Mission Taco Joint an overall 3 because the location is a solid 5, as well as the entire vibe inside. However, the food is a 3-4 max. There's tons of seating all over the place which is great for late night. Whether you want a window seat, booth, or bar seating you're good to go. Now to the real info, the food. The two main words that came to my mind were dismay and overpriced. It's a shame because the food looks good, but tastes very underwhelming. Mexican food should taste like a fiesta in your mouth, not a small town parade. Even their hot sauce was odd. The main theme seems to be a struggle between sweet and spicy, but not a balance of both. The burrito was fairly large, but for $14 I was bummed out. I've had better food at Chipotle for half the price. The tacos are pricy @ almost $4, and they're very small. I might go back during happy hour (10pm-2am) to give it another shot ($2 tequila shots, no pun intended).
