The world could definitely use more Sevanandas! I love this little co-op. They carry several things that I literally cannot find anywhere else in Atlanta, and although I've been shopping here for over a year or two, I love to wander around the aisles and always seem to find something new. For those who are not familiar, this is meat-free establishment which focuses on providing healthy, organic, sustainable, local, natural products. They are definitely a bit more expensive than your average grocery store but most of the products are well worth it. There's an entire wall full of jars filled with spices, loose teas, plant powders, you name it... And another section of bulk items like granola, nuts, oats, coffee... Even peanut and almond butter made fresh. Oh and a place to fill up water, homemade soap, need I go on?? I don't usually buy my produce here because it's quite expensive, but I do like that they provide mainly all organic and local options. They also have great hot bar items, but they are quite tofu/mock meat heavy in my opinion. The tofu ginger wrap is pretty amazing though. The only reason I'm inclined to give 4 stars instead of 5 is solely based on some of their cashiers/associates. There are a handful of people who work there (who seem to have worked there for quite some time) that are just downright unfriendly and often rude. The newer faces I've seen (in the last 6 months ) are super friendly and helpful though. It's unfortunate that there are a few people who can bring such a great place down, but as long as there are mostly nice people and awesome products I will keep coming back! If you haven't been before, grab one of their coffees (they always have café Campeseno available, and it's awesome) and check out all of the aisles... This place is wholesome heaven. I love that Atlanta has a local natural foods market. There are so many vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options. Lots of low-cost meals, snacks, and pastries made in the back of their kitchen too, and even a hot bar which serves delicious homely food in the morning. I moved to the area 2 weeks ago from Portland, OR and have visited this market at least 5 times. My husband moved here before me and I was sending him care packages from our favorite local market in Portland... little did we know this gem was right here the whole time! I'm absolutely in love with their bulk food section and bulk beauty products - they have quite the selection! The only thing I've not been able to find is bulk body lotion, but I think the bulk honey and bars of soap make up for it ;-) I've found their prices to be reasonable and the staff to be friendly and helpful. As of a few months ago (mid-2008) Sevenanda renovated and their hot bar is open regularly. With limited exception (*) prepared food is what Sevenanda has to offer me. Their vegetarian food is real and reasonable ... unlike what you get at many restaurants, you could eat here every day and not be terribly bad off for it. The hot bar ($6/pound) is a slim notch below Rainbow Grocery (http://www.yelp.com/biz/rainbow-grocery-decatur#hrid:Q1TAu-7YJYYGyzVMVI2s8w/query:natural%20foods) and many of their $5 (now ~$6) refrigerated tv-dinner style meals are decent. * Their bulk (arbitrary quantity) nuts and herbs can be a good value if you don't need much. I generally prefer the Dekalb Farmer's Market and other places for groceries, but Sevananda sells decent stuff and is convenient intown. read more

I love Sevananda. I shop there at least a couple times a month, for the past two or three years. This place has offered me a lot. I don't shop there with a cart, necessarily, and get all my groceries, but for me it's a great place to pick up natural toiletries like castile soap and almond oil, and bags of herbs that I like to steep in water (like spearmint, yum! the most refreshing beverage ever), and varieties of trail mix, and holistic books by local authors. The staff there is friendly and knowledgeable and supportive. The hot lunches feature cuisine from a different part of the world every day (like South African Tuesday and Indian Thursday or something), and it's all vegetarian and often vegan as well. Actually, the only reason I'm leaving this review right now is that I was looking up a pineapple and coconut juice that I recently started buying there and can't get enough of; I wanted to Google the name of the juice company, and my search included this page, so I thought I'd give a shout out to Sevananda for all that they've done for me. A great, local, community, fresh place to shop. I know most of us usually leave reviews when we've had a particularly bad or good experience at a place, and you sometimes wish you could read a review from a consistently satisfied shopper. I always feel a certain kind of way whenever I walk into this store. Surrounded by thoughtful, and forward thinking, products and groceries, you feel like you are doing something good for not only yourself but for the environment. So grateful that this store is walking distance from my home. Really enjoy the 'ready-to-eat' section. All the options are endless. Vegan mac-n-cheese, 'Tofu Delight' burrito, "turkey" or "tuna" (vegan) subs... I could go on and on. They even have an incredible hot bar and desserts section. Kombucha on tap where a half gallon cute little jug is $4 and refills are $11. They have an hibiscus flavor as well as a ginger turmeric flavor. If you're in the area, and even if you're not, come by and see this neat little store for yourself. This isn't Kroger or Publix. I love to come here for the friendly vibes and items that are not as easily found elsewhere. I'm always greeted when entering and often someone strikes up a conversation. They sell raw vegan food items that are great to pick up for lunch as long as you beat the crowd to grab them. They have a nice selection of health products as well along with the ability to purchase from bulk bins which is nice to save on packaging. I shop here often and I've noticed that some of the people working here aren't really knowledgeable about some of the products, but after making a purchase yesterday I don't think I'll be returning. Upon checking out the customer service rep (SHAINA, lady with the blonde hair) scanned my item and it rung more than the price displayed. When I told her she told me the customer, I could double check it as if I wasn't honest. During the whole transaction SHAINA had a very nasty and disturbed attitude. She should not be in the eye of customers, this is bad for business. read more

The prices are competitive; staff members are helpful and friendly. The food in the hot bar is good and tasty. There is a suggestion box at the member services desk. The biggest kick I get out of Sevananda is the customers! It always feels like the elite of the natural-lifestyle squad is there and I find myself wondering if this one is Erykah Badu's Atlanta stylist, or if that one teaches martial arts to Dead Prez or something. Anyway, I go there for tea (they have a varied and extensive selection of bagged, and some loose leaf) and Dr. Bronner's Castille Hemp Soap. Target now sells it, but only in the big $9 bottle and the gallon container, whereas Sevananda has 4 different sizes starting at $3.50. This is a great place to come for all your homeopathic remedies and natural beauty products without going all the way to Whole Foods. read more

Look, I hate to pull the "I'm from Calfornia" card (obviously false), but I'm from California. I have high standards when it comes to grocery co-ops, especially vegetarian ones. And it's not so much that this place is small - though it is - but it's small AND overpriced, especially on produce. And the produce isn't particularly local or organic or good most of the time, certainly not more so than plenty of other places. We go here because there are some things that are worth coming here for that you can get a good price on (like fruit juices, some cereals, and a decent bulk section) and I grab a quick kombucha here every now and then because it's the only place nearby where I can. And if you're vegan they do have some specialty items that you can't get other places, like We Can't Say It's Cheese and Daiya. But it's not particularly awesome in that regard either; there were plenty of vegan items I would wish they had that they didn't back in the day. Finally, the staff is friendly enough, but not particularly efficient, and I'm always kind of confused when things take as long here as they do. I guess the point of this review, really, is for me to be a jerk and say that Sevananda is fine, but if this is the local co-op that's getting so many rave reviews, I want to say to you all that better can exist! Expect more from your co-op! There were places like this on crowded street corners in SF that were basically just corner stores, and a city like Atlanta, the capitol of the "New South," should really have more - and bigger and better - places like this, especially in the co-op model. Love every single employee at this lovely place!!! I work nearby at the local Vegan restaurant and sometimes I have to grab a quick bite before work and they always have something great at the hot bar! Sooo thankful for this place being around! All of the employees are so charming and friendly. They make you feel like family. I have had too many bad experiences here to like this place. The first time I went here to my surprise I ended up spending over 150$ on two bags of food. I was asked if I would like to become a member. I like supporting local businesses, but most of all I had purchased so much that I would have saved money by buying a membership. The cashier told me I could NOT buy a membership because the customer service desk closes an hour before the store. She asked the guy next to her (another employee) if I could use his membership for the day, but he declined. I was told later that they should have gave me the discount and let me pay for my membership the next time. Apparently this is what their usual practice is. I can't believe these people! So you ask if someone wants to purchase a membership, but then you do not let them buy one at the register. Ridiculous! I felt so deceived by these people. I do not ever want to step foot in this place again. Today I went there only because I was so sick that I could not make it to any other store. All I wanted was popsicles, yogurt, and juice. My bill was over 40$. The prices they are charging here are beyond lunacy. As I was walking out I made a pact to myself that I will never return, regardless of the circumstances. My coop at home in Madison, WI would never tolerate this type of service by their employees/establishment. I miss that place. read more

This used to be a really fun shopping experience with lots of charm, esp 10-15 yrs ago. Now, there are many competitive stores offering organic, natural remedies, etc. Now, it seems a bit cramped with limited options in produce and items. This store is ideal for the super vegan set. They don't sell any meat like some other natural stores. They offer an array of raw foods, so this store is a great choice for raw food people. I don't like that they boot cars instantly if you shop there and then go into another store in L5P. It happened to me and I had to show them my receipt to get the boot off. This isn't the stores fault, but L5P has lost a lot of its charm overall. I still go to Elmyr now and then, but I almost got mugged in L5P by 2 homeless vagrants. Luckily, I had the street smarts to see what they were trying to do and I yelled at them and accused them publicly and they scurried away. It isn't safe anymore and you get pestered constantly by bearded Trustafarians and tattooed meth addicts who want your money. read more

After getting several positive reviews on Sevananda, I found myself with some time to kill in L5P (there was a wreck on Moreland and traffic was insane, so I decided to wait it out by checking out the local establishments), and besides, my wife had bought some tea tree shampoo there that I liked, so I decided to venture in. The immediate looks from the employees (suspicion?) were slightly off-putting, but not more so than the near indecipherable store layout and the loudly effected clientele 'Sweetie, we're totally out of flax seed and my digestion just can't go another day without it! Grab some for me would you?'. I will admit that I was not in the right mindset for overt vegan oppression, so I probably am unfairly judging Sevananda on this particular point, but the fact remains that after ten minutes I could not find the shampoo I was looking for (was it with personal hygiene products or organic cleaners, maybe herbal remedies?) so I just gave up and left with the feeling that Sevananda is the Emperor's New Clothes of hipster stores. Everyone raves about it, but it ultimately disappoints. At least the DeKalb Farmers Market doesn't have any pretension of cool, just well-priced products. read more

I love supporting this place. They have a great selection of health foods and products without being too pricey. Their prepared meals are so good, too. Whenever I wake up early enough I like to wander down there and see what's on the menu. The vegan shepherd's pie is out of this world. The co-op sells their cookbooks, as well so you can really make your favorites at home. Everything is super fresh. You can grind your own peanut butter and mill your own assorted flours. It's perfect! I also love walking in that door and checking out the fresh veggies they've marked down. They're still tasty and perfectly edible, but need to be used quickly. No problem. I usually design my dinner menu based on the veg or herb I pick up. read more

I am not often in Atlanta but when I do find myself there I always make it a point to go to Sevananda. Their grocery prices seem comparable to those of Whole Foods but it's a co-op so I feel way better about shopping there. There's a display case stocked with Arden's Garden drinks right when you walk in the door - awesome! Everyone there is always super friendly and it's a pleasant environment to be in. I've been going to Sevenanda for a few years now so I'm surprised I haven't reviewed it. I'm so glad that this store is within a mile of my house. It's such a funky vibe. I love the diversity of the clientele. The prices are good given the niche or "health food" quality of the goods. I've always been pleased going there. Our son has a gluten allergy and they have a good mix of GF goods. Their produce is not a highlight but it usually focuses on local goods which is nice. Also, their hot bar is great! My friendly neighborhood food co-op! This review is specifically for their hot bar :) I've visited Sevananda on several occasions to browse their ready-made meals/sides and nuts/grains section. But today, I came specifically for their hot bar, which so many people have raved about. When I arrived around 12:10 PM, they had just emptied out the trays filled with breakfast/brunch items. I was told to wait until ~12:30 before lunch would be available, which was perfectly fine since I needed to pick up a couple of items and easily killed the time by browsing through their aisles. They have a small selection (6-8 dishes/sides), but they sure know how to prove that quality is greater than quantity. I'm not a vegetarian, as I usually eat meat a few times a month. That said, after eating at Sevananda's hot bar, they've convinced me even more that meat doesn't always have to be missed. You're looking at comfort foods that are exploding with flavor. Here is a sample of what they offer: Creole Sweet Potatoes Italian-Style Soy Sausage with Onions & Peppers Vegan Mac and Cheese Apple Pie Steamed Asparagus Grilled Broccoli I did not ask for the last two, but I'm sure they were tasty. The top four items were SOOO amazing. That vegan mac and cheese is heavenly, and I can only hope to figure out what that recipe is. In older reviews, I read that Sevananda's hot bar is much cheaper than Whole Foods. Unfortunately, they must have raised their prices, because it is the same price as Whole Foods at $7.99/lb. Since I'm not getting a salad, that price can go up pretty fast, especially since you are not in full control of the amount. And by this I mean that an employee behind the hot bar will pack your food for you in their environmentally friendly containers that come in 3 different sizes. So you can tell them how much you want of each item, but you'll never really know how much you're about to pay for until the end. I can gauge a pound easily with my hands, so I wish this amenity was offered self-serve like their salad bar. Still, the lady gave me the perfect portion to make me feel satisfied but not overly stuffed awaiting a food coma. My food was just over $10. I don't think I'll ever be able to leave this store without grabbing something from their hot bar now! read more
