Some shops inside have yet to open but the market looks better in terms of set up and layout. The organization is better & the products & produce are better arranged & stocked. The staff seem better, too at being nicer to customers, more smiles. Thankfully it's the location that closest to our place. More and more vendors/shops are opening at the TAWA Gateway and the aesthetics surrounding the plaza is being remodeled to appear more gentrified and a seem more of a relaxed atmosphere.

This place has tons of good deals/sales so it's basically perfect. My wife has their rewards program so it's even better for shopping here. As for products, they're pretty standard to most markets around. Produce are fresh and meats are plentiful. Staff here is efficient and friendly. Occasionally, you'll find staff handing out free samples similar to Costco. Overall, a standard market and pretty consistent with other 99 Ranch Markets. They also have a bakery in the back which is pretty popular. Not expensive at all and plentiful of options. They have self checkout stations as well but sometimes they're not open. Usually there's about 3-4 cashier stations going on so traffic control is pretty good.

I have been to this Asian market a few times and am actually surprised that the price of produce is really cheap. But you do have to be aware that the fruits may not last as long as maybe going to another market like Smart & Final or Stater Bro's. Also there have been times when I have seen produce starting to mold/ have spots. During cherry season, I was surprised to find that this market sold rainier cherries (I actually love these more than the red ones) for $1.98 per pound where as other places are selling them for anywhere from $5 to $7 per pound. It is very busy when some of their produce like that is very cheap (because you know you just aren't the only one who thinks that is a good deal). The rest of the market itself has a similar layout as what you would expect at other Asian markets. And on our past visits, the market has been clean and did not have that familiar odor that may be associated with Asian markets. One thing I thought was interesting though about this market is that you need to have a minimum purchase of at least $5 for credit card transactions. I have only seen a small number of markets that have a minimum for credit card transactions and just wanted to bring that up for those that don't normally carry cash but wish to grocery shop here.

What really pissed me off today was the cashier at station 6 (older Asian lady with her hair in a bun and with glasses). We were waiting for bags and she started telling us to put the items in our cart. So, we just assumed she was out of bags and we started putting the items into the cart. When it came time to pay, that's when this db decided to hand over bags and shot a bag at me while I was picking up items in the cart. Of course I ask her why the fuck she threw the fucking bag at me like that. Did she understand? No idea but she did stare back at me.

The sushi and sushi rolls are good here. They do offer slightly different rolls and sushi combinations compared to the Koreatown location. I wish that this location offer the Toro and Hamachi rolls like the Koreatown location does. One thing I don't like about this location is their physical setup. The area where you get the sushi from the refrigerator space is very cramped. People are just up and down, left and right. If you get a rude person, they're just plowing through you to get their sushi from the sushi case. I find myself dodging people and often, knocking some of their products off the shelf behind me. Has it stopped me from coming here to get sushi? No. But I do find the setup to be pretty annoying and anxiety provoking.

We got two of their boxed sushi combos: the California Roll & Salmon Avocado Roll, and the Eel & California Roll. For the price, it's a great value and you get a good amount of sushi. The eel roll and California rolls were good, but the salmon avocado roll was pretty tasteless. One thing I did notice was that the refrigerators they use to store the boxed sushi didn't feel cold at all, which was a little concerning, especially with raw fish being stored inside. Overall, good value for the price and it's a decent spot for a quick pick up for lunch and eat in your car type of situation if you're on a crunch time.

But my husband and I were looking for a specific Chinese tea drink and so we ended up coming here because we had gone to a few of the other Chinese markets nearby with no such luck. We ended up parking on Valley instead of parking in their small parking lot and then walked in. I am surprised that this market hasn't changed since my childhood, honestly the market doesn't look like it has remolded or changed. It's like a time capsule, frozen in time. I did end up finding that tea drink here and I was also really surprised how cheap a lot of the produce was, as compared to other Asian supermarkets. And as long as I am able to park on Valley, I think I would consider coming back here the next time I'm in the area.

After I…read moreposted about it on Google Reviews, Hawaii Supermarket publicly responded and told me, "you can come back and we will give you a refund anytime, please keep your receipt." Based on that response, my dad went back to the store by himself. Unfortunately, we had already thrown away the original paper receipt, but we still had a clear photo of the receipt, as well as photos of the moldy bread. I understand that requiring the original paper receipt may be their policy. However, the way the situation was handled was very disappointing. My dad drove about 50 miles round trip after seeing the store's response on Google and expecting that the issue could be resolved. Once he arrived, customer service would not issue the refund without the original paper receipt. My dad did not want to argue, so in the end he simply took another loaf of bread instead. My family has been shopping at Hawaii Supermarket for about 20 years, which is why this experience was especially disappointing. This was never really about the price of one loaf of bread. It was about the customer service and how the situation was handled after selling a moldy food product and publicly asking us to come back to the store for a refund.

What brought me so much joy is the fact that they sell fresh star apple for $10.99/lb, albeit expensive, but exists HERE!!! I bought a couple to try. I hope I am not gonna be disappointed, but, heck, it was worth a try no matter what. I didn't get to visit all the departments but will definitely return to check it out.
