I have not been to Hawaii Supermarket in such a long time and have been avoiding this market for years because the parking has always been horrible. But my husband and I were looking for a specific Chinese tea drink and so we ended up coming here because we had gone to a few of the other Chinese markets nearby with no such luck. We ended up parking on Valley instead of parking in their small parking lot and then walked in. I am surprised that this market hasn't changed since my childhood, honestly the market doesn't look like it has remolded or changed. It's like a time capsule, frozen in time. I did end up finding that tea drink here and I was also really surprised how cheap a lot of the produce was, as compared to other Asian supermarkets. And as long as I am able to park on Valley, I think I would consider coming back here the next time I'm in the area. read more

I purchased a loaf of bread from Hawaii Supermarket and later discovered that it was moldy. After I posted about it on Google Reviews, Hawaii Supermarket publicly responded and told me, "you can come back and we will give you a refund anytime, please keep your receipt." Based on that response, my dad went back to the store by himself. Unfortunately, we had already thrown away the original paper receipt, but we still had a clear photo of the receipt, as well as photos of the moldy bread. I understand that requiring the original paper receipt may be their policy. However, the way the situation was handled was very disappointing. My dad drove about 50 miles round trip after seeing the store's response on Google and expecting that the issue could be resolved. Once he arrived, customer service would not issue the refund without the original paper receipt. My dad did not want to argue, so in the end he simply took another loaf of bread instead. My family has been shopping at Hawaii Supermarket for about 20 years, which is why this experience was especially disappointing. This was never really about the price of one loaf of bread. It was about the customer service and how the situation was handled after selling a moldy food product and publicly asking us to come back to the store for a refund. read more

This market is really big and busy. Got stone crab and they had a maximum of 3 only and meaty crab. Both were very good in their own way and we just steamed then to eat. Seems like there are lots of deals. They even have a variety of soup cubes. I will definitely be coming back since they seem to stock more than the other markets. They also give you goodies if you spend over a certain amount, although i would say spending $50 for toilet paper is worth but free is free. If you spend $150 you get a bowl. Not the most organized Vietnamese-Chinese supermarket, but they have so many hard-to-find items and a wider selection than some of the 99 Ranch locations. I was able to find all the ingredients for a popular Chinese herbal drink, and the hot food section has fresh Chinese pancakes that I haven't seen at other markets. What's interesting is that, on the right side of the entrance, there's a community bulletin board covered with personal ads. I wish I could understand them and participate, but alas, they're all in Chinese. Despite the narrow parking lot lanes outside, chaotic foot traffic and blaring bolero music inside, it attracts plenty of locals with its distinctive personality and unique selection of products. read more

12/19/25 Exploring another market that caters to mostly Asian fruits/vegetables & items. It looks fairly clean & organized, staff appear helpful (did not encounter any at this visit). It's my first time here & it was near closing time, about 20 minutes before 9 pm. I barely had time to go into the aisles & noted the fresh produce area to boast a pretty good amount of Asian fruits & vegetables, impressive actually. Before I could go any further into my exploration, the lights were being turned off to cue for customers to fall in line to pay for their purchases. It was NOT subtle either, they meant business! LOL. It was pretty dark. Will need to return to see what else they have to offer. The parking lot was sizable. Additionally, it was also littered with detritus on the floor, quite unsightly. It is late in the day but it was very off putting. I hope it looks better earlier in the day when I visit again. read more

So many childhood memories here! It's still a really nostalgic visit when I swing by. The parking lot is very small and can get super crowded/people driving recklessly, but depending on the time, you can avoid it or park at the larger lot across the street and walk over. Long gone are the sugarcane and wheel cake vendors, which make me really sad, but it is what it is. They also took out the quarters machine I would get sticker Poke'mon cards from but that was like 20 years ago lol. I LOVE that they have really huge wall of shame for people who have shop lifted right when you enter. And after you pass the the massive wall and aisles of alcohol, you can see all of the unique things that they have here. I've found cilantro instant noodles, My Little Pony Rainbow Dash snacks, Pineapple Taiwan beer, and cuts of meats, exotic and normal that's difficult to find elsewhere. There's gator, armadillo, ostrich, deer, rabbit, and for "regular" meat you get unique frozen cuts like brain, testicles, and all forms of offal. If you can't find it another Asian market, you will definitely find it here. I also noticed that they recently have updated and cleaned up their frozen meats and butcher section. I remember when my parents would leave me there so I can "play" with the frogs and turtles (they have what looks like red eared sliders and soft shelled turtles) and crabs and shellfish. It is a bit sad since they emphasize that the critters must be butchered before leaving the market, but I guess it's the law and to stop invasive species. Some of the turtles aren't even full size too which sucks, but I digress. The prices might not be super competitive for the more "common" items but for sure it's worth a stop if you want a cheap date alternative to an aquarium LOL. read more

If you want a very authentic south China/Vietnam experience in America this would be a great place to start. I do find charm in the fact it doesn't seem to have been remodeled at all since the 80s. Not a fun place to get to though since it's at an intersection fully flanked by flock cameras and a terrible small parking lot. Let's also just say the drivers and people there can add a little too much authenticity at times. This is for the meat department...Obnoxious and rude customer service!! While 6 men were carving meat, ONLY one person was serving one customer, and 8 people were waiting to buy meat. When I ask for an additional server, the dude who reluctant to come was extremely rude. He mocked at an older woman who couldn't hear him, plus he was annoyed by the rest of us the moment he got to the counter. He's there to work and to sell meat so what's the point of carving meat if we aren't coming back!!?? And to the rude dude: We are the whole reason why you are needed, so show some respect, especially to the older folks!! read more

A must stop for locals visiting CA for omiyage, and to refill your snack and instant coffee/tea pantry! And we always say, why is it called Hawai'i Supermarket? Maybe, it's because people from Hawai'i like us love shopping there? Finding our comfort foods and familiar ingredients when visiting or living there? All of the above? Yes, parking is crazy here, but they have overflow across the street (labeled with a big sign by the Chinese herbal store) and on the back side of the parking lot to the right of the store front entrance. The restroom is right in the extremely busy, live seafood, section (quick reminder to get a number first for seafood orders)! Only one stall in the women's restroom, so there's a long line. There are always bargains galore and their fresh fruits and veggie departments often look so glorious and eye catching. Despite our friendly banter about being very careful bringing fresh goods back home to Hawai'i, my friends have always completed their Department of Agriculture form on their return flights very accurately, bringing goodies home to family. (I confirmed with Ag inspectors that we are good following these processes.) Have seen them bring Enoki mushrooms and persimmons with no problems this year! Just check items carefully on purchase, and fill out your Ag form accurately;). We go through almost every aisle here - facial, oral, and hair care, bulk boba, rice, fresh and dried foods, snacks, snack gift sets, household and cookware, cleaning, ramen and instant foods, coffee, tea, and other beverages, instant and in bulk, alcohol (often with beautiful gift sets), health supplements, and more! (Allow time to explore, in other words.) Do check expiry dates, as on this particular visit, they had some amazing deals on Kit Kats - so we bought a bag, taste tested, and yup, they were perfect in taste and crunch! Not only did we buy cases of the great deal, we caused quite a stir and others quickly followed suit. When the deal is that good, and for food safety in general, you should always check dates, countries of origin, and ingredients, to be safe, and well within your comfort levels and personal preferences. Don't laugh, my friends also bought those tickets from the machine at the exit? To win money prizes? Wow, one of them hit the $50 and cashed it in immediately, just five steps away at the cashier! (Please gamble responsibly, this was just for fun in small increments ($2.00?), since we don't have gambling in Hawai'i.) Very disappointing customer service and poor attitude from the cashier. I purchased a 3-pack of herbal jelly honey today for $1.99 and paid $2.00 in cash. I waited for my receipt and the 1-cent change. Instead of completing the transaction, the cashier was chatting and laughing with a man who appeared to be looking at something on his phone. This was not work-related, while a long line of customers was waiting behind me. After several minutes, instead of apologizing for the delay, the cashier rudely asked me, "Are you waiting for one cent?" I explained that I was waiting for my receipt. She then impatiently threw the receipt toward me and tossed the one-cent change onto the counter. This is not about one penny. I wanted my receipt because I have previously purchased a bag of dried lily bulbs here for more than $10. After opening the package at home, it had a very strong, unpleasant chemical-like odor. Unfortunately, I could not return it because I had lost the receipt, so I had to throw it away. Your receipt clearly states that refunds/exchanges are only allowed within 7 days with the original receipt. I have also noticed this cashier chatting with other people during working hours before. Management should seriously address this behavior and remind employees that customers deserve professional, respectful, and attentive service, especially when there is a long line waiting. Please train your employees to complete transactions properly, provide receipts without customers having to ask, and treat customers respectfully. I hope management takes this complaint seriously. If I encounter another food-quality issue involving an unusual chemical-like odor, I will consider reporting it to the appropriate health and food-safety authorities for further investigation. My new all time favorite asian supermarket in all of LA + 626 area. It's a Chinese + Vietnames store combo, never have i ever seen this. Everywhere else you go 99 ranch is only Chinese, hmart only Korean. But this combo lends itself to the most expansive selection of exotic fruits, veggies, multiple variations of these fruits veggies. Lowest prices, huge selection of household items, pots pans utensil selection lends to multiple aisles as well, Also I believe it's the viet culture that indulges more in drinks and alcohol because the front part of the store is dominated by a huge section of wines, hard spirits dark liquor etc and tons of premium alcohol brands and bottles too Their frozen section is extremely clean and the largest selection i have seen however the labels and price tags are extremely low to the ground meaning you have to bend your neck and your height to see it, it is completely see through but you really cant see the labels, price or item title without bending your neck. The fresh meat selection was decent not the largest however their seafood and seafood live tanks were huge, tons of crab variants, 3 styles of live turtles, lots of fishes. They also have the largest sauces and noodles selection i have seen. I have heard people have a hard time parking from everyone's review but i was able to snag a spot immediately, even if it was hard to park this store has so much volume i can't imagine you would wait longer than 2-3 minutes as people are constantly going in and out the store. I am going to visit this store as my regular shop for now as the selection was the most impressive to me and never left me feeling like i was missing one ingredient that i could not find no matter how unique. read more

This is pretty much my childhood supermarket. I used to come here a lot as a kid with my parents. Great place for asian veggies and it used to be my go to place for all the cup noodles! More recently, I purchased alcohol here and prices are actually super reasonable. They also have balut from what I remember and durig COVID, they were giving out a bunch of hand sanitizer. Overall, good place to shop for groceries but I cant say its the ultimate freshest. All I can say is it is good enough and has everything you probably need for an asian meal. Parking can get pretty hectic but it's manageable. read more

I love their seafood here, it's as fresh as you can get, their shrimps are still swimming lol. But their pears, stay away from all their packaged pears. I bought 2 boxes of 3 and one box of them were soft while the other box had the mushiest I've seen (see video). Ask the cashiers for where the stuff is, very little staff at the produce department will know English or even mandarin. I am impressed that they have jars of frozen passion fruit as well as various frozen durian. Their fresh durian is like $10 more per box than ranch 99 but considering they even have frozen pork fat, a variety of Vietnamese meatballs to make authentic pho, and other Asian tropical fruits it's still a winner. Oh and their kiwi brand kitchen knives and paring knives are really good! Light and easy to use. Plus forget about getting $30+ bottles of makeup removing oil, here it's only $6 for a thing of refill and dump into existing empty bottle and works just as well. Sure it's not as organized as other markets but they also give out free gifts for receipts over $50. I got 2 glass bento boxes, not bad to microwave lunches and avoid microplastics. read more

I am happy that Hawaii Super is still going strong. I have loads of memories here - all good ones, coming here with mom & granny every weekend that, at the time, I felt was tedious and boring, but now What I wouldn't give to make this run with them..... I remember parking was always a mess but not this visit, I got here at 10 am to buy canned pate as gifts to my neighbor who loves Viet Pate before driving home. I did not see the sugarcane and wheel cake vendors at the front entrance. I will have to come in the afternoon next time to catch them so to complete my mental image. I noticed they have a large selections of wine strategically placed in the center of the market facing the main entrance. This is new. The prices are less than NorCal grocery stores for sure. I have noticed this consistent fact every time I come down for visits so I buy what I need the night before or morning of my drive home. I had a very unpleasant experience at the Hawaiian supermarket this morning around 10:40 AM. The male stock clerk who was stocking the eight-treasure porridge display had an extremely rude attitude and even made discriminatory remarks about Mainland Chinese people. I believe he may be Taiwanese, but it's disappointing that he seems to have forgotten that many older generations originally came from Mainland China as well. He had just placed several boxes of porridge on the shelf. Since I was in a hurry to get to work, I politely asked if he could open one box so I could quickly take a pack. He impatiently replied that there was "no price yet" and that I could not take it. I pointed out that the price was already posted on the signboard. He looked at the sign and then changed his explanation, saying it was "not entered into the computer yet." I asked when it would be available, and he simply said, "Wait." I had already picked up one pack, but he again insisted I could not take it because it was "not ready." Since I didn't have time to wait, I put it back and went to pay for my other groceries. While I was leaving, I clearly heard him talking behind me and saying negative things about "those Mainland Chinese people." After I finished checking out, I saw he had walked away from the area, so I went back, took two packs, and paid for them immediately at the register without any issue at all. Also, the promotional price had already been posted on the store's Facebook page since May 4th, so the excuse about it "not being in the computer" was obviously untrue. I strongly urge the store manager to address this employee's behavior seriously. Before me, several other customers also wanted to buy the porridge, but he refused to let them take any, causing them to walk away. His attitude was extremely rude, aggressive, and unfriendly. In the past, I encountered much friendlier staff at this supermarket. One employee even encouraged me to take a whole box because the porridge has a long shelf life, and kindly opened a box immediately when he saw me waiting. That kind of service is what brings customers back. Unfortunately, today's experience was so disappointing that I no longer want to shop at this supermarket. read more

Do you need some silverware? They have it. Along with produce of all sorts, seafood section is huge. There are a ton of groceries to choose from, but prices aren't always listed. Need some alcohol? First of all, I must've been crazy to think I would find parking in this very crowded lot. Upon circling around 4x I gave up and decided to just walk here from the hotel since it's literally 500 feet away. As I've mentioned, the parking situation is highly atrocious!! Good luck finding a spot!! The inside of the store is nice, I love the lanterns hanging everywhere... nice touch!! However, the inside of this place was just as super busy as the parking lot itself. The store has a wide selection of Asian goodies you won't find in non-Asian stores lol! Just picked up small necessities (water bottles & munchies) to keep in the room for the duration of my stay in the area. I guess it's good for a business to be busy, but I LK almost had a panic attack because of how crowded and chaotic it was inside and in the parking lot lol! Honestly, this is a bit of a hole in the wall market so if you're a little bit of a clean freak or want things shelved a certain way or want your items brightly lit in a pristine environment I would recommend another market like 99 ranch or Hmart for your ethnic goods. Parking at Hawaii market can get tricky but it's popular for a reason-- it also serves as a wholesaler so you will find random niche / unique food items that might scare /or amuse the average Westerner lol. I usually love browsing this store because of its collection. It has one of the bigger Japanese selection of drug store items (like sunblock, face masks, shampoo, etc) for a non-Japanese store. They have a decent selection for fish/ meat. I usually would buy veggies elsewhere though. read more

On Jun 27, 2025, I bought expensive Chinese nuts from Hawaii Supermarket which was 30 minutes drive from my home. Unfortunately it already staled with a bad oil smell even though it won't expire until 6 months later on 12/26/2025. Sadly, I lost my receipt but I had a credit card statement to show the transaction. Unlike Walmart, Home Depot, Vons etc that would offer me store credit without a receipt, Hawaii Supermarket treats us like dishonest liars and refuses to give me a store credit. I love Hawaii Supermarket! It's a pretty old supermarket but it's a huge part of the San Gabriel city, even with a posted bulletin board out in the front. They post all their current promotions by the front of the store that you can check out. If you are looking for high end french wines, surprisingly this is a good place as they carry the rarest wines like Domaine Romanée Conti and great Napa reds like Harlan and Screaming Eagle. The storage is not perfect but what a selection. I do go there though to get my Asian condiments and other hot sauces as the choices are vast and the prices very reasonable . Ex : original Siracha at 5.99 compared to 7.99 at SF market on San Gabriel Blvd. It is crowded and a little gloomy so it does not make the shopping an enjoyable affair but if you know what you need for your Asian recipe, this is the place. read more

Besides the food and kitchenwares you would expect, it's like 'pre like a superstore: for example, you can even pick up household goods like safety razors. Walking into Hawaii Supermarket, you'd think you walked into the 1980s; the decor, lighting, signage, and overall vibe could have been lofted straight from the Terminator movie. we got these crab from this market. Saturday night 30mins before they closed. We were driving from Burbank to there to buy 3 crab paid for $60 total. We didn't check the crab because we pay for the live crab's price. But they trick us get the poison crab give to us. Sunday morning brought back crab ask for refund they don't take responded this problem. Even we brought the crab and show them. Final they give us back $15 store credit for solve this problem. We paid $60 get back $15 for they trick us. [Pros] * Frozen refrigerated meat section - exotic animals: This market sells exotic frozen animal meat such as frozen armadillo (product of USA), venison cap steak / ground / flank steak, white alligator meat, frozen rabbit, squab, etc. * Frozen refrigerated meat section - internal beef organs: Another section also sells beef omasum, beef aorta, beef heart, beef intestine, beef spleen, etc. * Asian fruits: You can buy the king of fruit durian here. * Excellent discount on selective items: I was able to buy a box of KN95 (10 pieces) and disposable face mask (50 pieces) for $1 per box (as of Nov 2022.) * Random cookware & appliances: It is similar to Tokyo Central Gardena, Marukai Little Tokyo, or cookware & appliances side of Costco - a section of the market sells random kitchenware (china ware, dishes, etc.), ceramic, electronics, and other miscellaneous items you can find in Daiso. * Unique spices and Asian exclusive items: You will find spices/herbs that you never heard of, tea leaves, snacks, etc. You can bet that you will find seasonal items such as red envelope, moon cakes, or incenses when each festival (Lunar New Year, Mid Autumn Festival, etc.) is just around the corner. * Plastic bags: Cashier just gave me a free plastic bag without charging an additional $0.10. * Community bulletin board: There's a community bulletin board (mostly written in Chinese with few written in English) right next to the front entrance with various postings such as rooms for rent, used cars for sale, looking for English/Chinese tutors, etc. * Wine: There's a huge & insane wine selection. [Cons] * Smell: I am used to the unique funky smell you get from a typical Chinese/Vietnamese supermarket, but I understand some visitors just can't get over it. * Run down & unorganized market: Yes the market feels a bit run-down. In fact the market posts multiple signs telling shoppers (1) do not open products or (2) stop doing fruit tasting. They post these signs for a good reason because obviously you have shoppers actually doing both acts. * Smokers: There's a good chance you will run into smokers near the front entrance and good luck on trying to avoid secondhand smoke. [Conclusion] Overall this is a pretty niche market and shoppers should take the good with the bad. Visiting here is the next best authentic Chinese/Vietnamese market experience without having to travel to Asia. I come here once in awhile when my wife wants to but I would never voluntarily come here for myself. It's very dirty and food isn't that fresh but it's cheap. I usually go too Korean markets or Japanese markets or Trader Joe's where the food is way more fresh and store is more clean with better service. The bag people are lazy we had a bunch of food but the bagger guy was busy talking to some other customers that had no more food I'll make sure to let them know to bag my groceries next time though. read more

Let's start right off with the bad. The parking lot is horrible! It's way too small and people jocking for a parking space is worse than trying to cross 5 lanes on a packed highway. The thing to know is this is NOT Vons or Trader Joes. It also isn't Hawaiian. It's an Asian super marker. Once inside though, it's fun to look around. The first thing I noticed is the alcohol up front, all locked up. Several brands from Asia that I've never seen before. If you're someone who collected cool and unique liquor bottles, you'll LOVE that section. This is also part department store. Not a full department store, but they have aisles of kitchenware. My favorite is the lottery machine in the middle of the store, which I put in $20, and won $21. Unique fruits and vegetables are fun along with different meats. Prices are OK unless you're buying American food, then it seemed a little pricey, but that is not the bulk of what they sell. read more

The name suggests that you can find Hawaiian food at this place. Hawaiian salt.. poi.. etc. None of anything Hawaiian was found. If it had said oriental supermarket it would have been more accurate. I am very disappointed. I came here from Palm Springs, and made this a specific side trip. read more

I've battled the parking lot many times to stock up on sushi ingredients, frozen shellfish, rice dumplings, pickled chillies, fermented soybean paste, mochi, dried fungus, pork bellies, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Filipino, Thai, and other Asian specialty imported staples, condiments, and groceries. But what if you could dodge the dual for a parking spot, skip the long lines, avoid staring at labels and your long grocery list AND still end up with all the treasure sold here! INSTACART plus Hawaiian Supermarket equal #MAGIC! I cruised online sales, loaded up a virtual basket here and took the advice like, "other shoppers who bought Kikkoman Tamari also considered Kikkoman 'gluten free' hoisin sauce". (Nice!) If you're like me, skipping past long lines this lunar new year at restaurants for takeout, striking out at markets who close early on the holiday, looking for last minute ingredients to join the lunar celebration with your online friends in Thailand (Sa Was Dee Pee Mai Mark!) This is for you.:) Within about 20 minutes, I checked into Chinatown looking for takeout, b-lined to little Tokyo for drive thru, switched to Koreatown for fresh groceries, (HK market closed early) bailed to Thai Town, picked up some fresh noodles at Thailand market's new street vendor, and placed a huge order for Hawaiian Supermarket in the 2.5 minutes while I waited for my noodles. Sigh of relief. Welcome to Los Angeles! For a little over a hundred bucks, I got food for the WEEK! f?For me, my friends, family and colleagues. Everything, on sale. Delivered, fast. The best products and produce picked out with care. Currently in heaven. I bought a ton of gluten free products and shared the recipes online with friends. I am all the envy! Prices, phenomenal. Boneless skinless chicken thighs, $2. per pound. Boneless skinless pork shoulder, $1. per pound. Fresh mustard greens, tomatoes, radish sprouts, napa cabbage, on choy, less than a dollar a bag. 5 varieties of fresh handmade rice noodles, less than $2 each. Sweet rice cake, Tamari, wasabi, miso, hoisin, kirin, chilie paste, a couple bucks each. My haul is incredible. Move over chefs.
