I am so glad, after so many sewing stores have ceased to exist, that Sew Right is still there, and still great. I recently had my 16 year old Juki quilting sewing machine serviced, and Steve brought it back to life. I'll make sure I bring it in a lot more often Last visit, I needed binding for two quilts, and they had the fabrics I needed in the perfect colors. Everyone there is friendly, knowledgeable, and the selection of fabrics is amazing My husband came along and was so impressed with their quilting and embroidery machines, he tried to talk me into buying a new one!!! I'm a male senior citizen who purchased a mail order sewing machine so that I could refinish pants hems to fit my changing measurements. No prior sewing experience. Easy?? Wrong. Apparently, there's a lot more to sewing than meets the eye. Just threading the machine was challenging. Then I saw an ad for sewing lessons at Sew right. 3 hours spent with Catherine, the instructor, and I can easily set up the machine and perform basic sewing skills. The staff is friendly and professional. They stock a gazillion fabrics and threads, not to mention a huge selection of high end sewing machines. Forget about Walmart, Michaels, Joanne's, Hobby Lobby. I chose Sew Right for my Elna machine repair after researching many reviews. I decided Sew Right was the best place and I was proven correct after the way I was treated both over the phone and then when I dropped off my machine. The owner and employees were warm, welcoming and reassuring. I did not supply the power cord and they told me not to worry that they would order one. When I picked up the machine they gave me a detailed explanation of what was done and even gave me the defective gear that they replaced. They helped me out to my car with my machine and they restored it to its original condition. I recommend them wholeheartedly for their kindness, professionalism, thorough knowledge and follow through. I can't imagine a better repair shop. I will go nowhere else. read more

The owner contacted me the next day I posted my initial review. We had a brief talk over the phone about the issue (pretty much what I wrote in the initial review). I brought my machines back in the following Tuesday and he personally took a look at my machine right away. I pointed out the issues to him and he was surprised that the machines were returned to me the condition it was. He took it back to the tech to have it fixed. All in all, the process was pretty quick. My Brother just need a screw adjusted which took like a few minutes lol while the mechanic was working on the Singer (turns out the entire tension part needs to be replaced) we spoke for a bit; I had a few fabric scraps I brought with me to show him what I was sewing. They're extremely lightweight mesh fabrics. Him and another employee of his discussed on the best method to sew it. I appreciate they admit they weren't experienced with my specific fabrics and we discussed how to approach it. The entire trip took about an hour. My final experience with them was great. Both my machines were fixed & we explored on techniques & different ways to approach the fabrics I were sewing. Honestly, I had a feeling they weren't sure because they're known to be fussy fabrics but I appreciate them trying. The owner and I had a few chit chat moments and I really do appreciate their help. I took off a star in my final review because my machines shouldn't have been returned to me in the condition it was. The technicians/mechanics that worked on my machine should've tested each dial and sewn with it before saying they're 'done'. read more

This place is great. Came here with my mom. They fixed her Bernina 830 and did such a great job that I went out purchased a secondhand 830 machine due to being stuck at home for the pandemic and took it here for them to service as well. They are very personable, knowledgeable and willing to answer all of your questions. This is not a place that tries to steer you wrong or bait you. If I could give this store 6 stars, I would. I walked in in a spur of the moment after constantly seeing Sew Right on the Q27 bus route. Instantly, I was greeted by Steve, a kind man who gave me a tour of the store and a summary of the plethora of classes, which range from basic stitches to intermediate wool jacket making. Steve also told me about Sew Right's charity events. During these events, the shop provides the materials and machinery needed to create something, such a pillowcases for a children's hospital or skirts for girls in Africa. People of all levels of experience are encouraged to come participate at no fee, and the results are donated. What a fantastic way to perfect your sewing skills while contributing to a good cause! The employees went above and beyond to assist me. I instantly felt at home, and despite being a newbie to sewing, they made it very easy to navigate the shop and understand how prices are calculated. The minimum length you have to purchase for fabric is a quarter yard, and the prices marked on the cardboard is for a yard's worth. I bought a lovely and very soft yard of pink cherry blossom fabric for $11.99. The fusible fleece is priced in the same way, and cost $8.25 for a yard. Fabric on clearance are 30 - 40% off. They have many different lengths of zippers selling individually at $1.90. Adorable tomato pin cushions are $2.50. The quality of the fabric is very good, the selection is fantastic, and the prices are extremely fair. I would definitely choose this local business over Michael's or Joann. The return call response best ever. Customer service far exceeded expectations. My wonderful Bernina was failing and Sew Again brought it back to life! Works as if it were a brand new machine - and its not! My Bernina 1130 has been rescued. I am so appreciative of the attention I received from Steve, especially during this challenging time of social distancing needs. I have used this business in the past and was satisfied with the service, but I am writing this review about my current experiences with them. Recently, I needed to have my sewing machine repaired and brought it is. I just had spinal surgery and was unable to lift anything of that weight. One of the staff came out and took the machine from my car. The machine was fixed quickly, but I believe something was overlooked because it did not operate properly. I brought the machine in again and this time, a senior tech took care of the problem. Or so I thought. I was having problems again and was somewhat upset. I am glad I remembered what my mother taught me several years ago - "Be a lady, even if it hurts". And I did, even though I was somewhat frustrated because this was my 3rd time back. The owner checked it for me and resolved the issue immediately. I am so happy I did not lose my cool because he showed me, that I was the problem. (He did not say that, gentleman as he is), But, he showed me I had not inserted the needle all the way, and, simply put, that was the problem. Thank you Sew Right! read more

Hard to believe one could call a sewing machine place "a warm fuzzy" but that is exactly what this place is. I first went there late last fall when I was looking to replace my old Singer - after having visited the store that is kitty corner, first - and I was warmly greeted by Susie. I told her I needed to frequently sew through thick material & that this had caused my machine to break down & be inoperable so many times that I was embarrassed to take it back to the repair place I had been going to. She showed me a new machine that could do this kind of repair & actually let me repair my ankle brace, right then, as I tested her machine. As we talked, she realized that what I wanted was not a new machine, but to have my old one fixed. So, she told me to bring it in and they would give me a free estimate; so I did and had them do the work. I was so happy to have my machine back, but then last weekend, something that seemed to me to be totally unrelated to the initial repairs - broke. I took the machine in, they repaired it while I waited and when I gave them my credit card to pay - they waved me off and said "you're still under warranty." Been coming here since the 90s. Steve, the new owner, has done some amazing transformations. New space for classes and lectures. Great in store service, super sewing machines to test and staff is so friendly, always helpful with a smile. They greet you on first name basis. Fabric selection is very nice. Love their batiks. I purchased my Viking Sapphire 875Q at Sew Right 2 years ago. The experience was wonderful! There was no pressure to purchase and they let me try out the machines with their fabric since I came unprepared without my own. Since then, I have attended several of their monthly seminars and all the instructors are very knowledgeable. Sew Right's selection of Aurifil thread is nice. They have basic colors in stock plus light blue & pink. If you need one of the other colors it can be special ordered. Their needle & notions selection is very good for a small store. Their customer service can't be beat. I have called ahead of time several times before heading out there from Long Island and they are happy to hold the item for me at the checkout counter. I have had my machine repaired there. Harvey's team surely know what they're doing. I brought in my machine that was not working because I offset the timing by sewing over a very bulky seam hemming my husband's Tae Kwon Do uniform pants. It was about 8 layers of canvas for a few stitches. They fixed it within a few days! They also gave me a tip for not having that happen again: lengthen the stitch length just before the seam and hand crank the wheel instead of using the pedal so the machine can get through the seam without an issue. I highly recommend Sew Right for purchasing your next sewing machine and learning sewing techniques with their super teachers. read more

This is the best sewing machine store in New York State! They are so helpful from every stage of your purchase! I have purchased 2 sewing machines plus a sewing table a cutting table and chair for the sewing machine and everything has lasted incredibly well! They have classes for beginners to mid-level quilters and they offer excellent service to all! I have friends who have moved upstate and make the trip to Bayside just to bring their machines here for service. This little shop is great if you are new to using a sewing machine. They are not a huge store , but they stock everything you need. Their fabric section is also minimal, but you can still find something for what you are making. They even have a fabric section on clearance. I came in on a weekend with my daughter. I used a yelp deal $10 for $20 so that was a plus. If you checked in, you also received a free pair of embroidery scissors. My daughter was looking at these beautiful little ornately decorated scissors at the front counter, which I didn't know where the actual embroidery scissors. When I told them I had the check in deal for the scissors, the owner told me the deal had actually expired the previous day. When I looked at the fine print, I realized he was right. But he saw how much my daughter liked them and gave her a pair for free anyways. That was extremely generous of him, since they cost $6. It was another great reason to shop at an independent store versus going to a big box chain like Michaels/ Joanns. When I was shopping there, they looked like they were holding some kind of sewing class. They have an area with several sewing machines and I noticed patrons using them and working on a project. Everyone who worked there was extremely friendly. The person at the desk was very patient and answered every question I had for her. I'm not sure if their prices are cheaper than Michaels/Joanns, but you will definitely not receive the same customer service as you would here. I had brought in a turn of the century Singer that belonged to my late mother-in-law. The machine was in a shed for over 20 years and I thought it was a lost cause. I brought the machine into Sewtime and Susie fell in love with it. I went to Sewtime to take their sewing class and was very pleased. I walked in not knowing how to do very much, and finished class feeling confident that I could do some projects on my own. The instructor, Rebecca, was very friendly and knowledgeable. She encouraged us to ask questions and gave us great tips from experience. Classes at Sewtime are effective and you really do learn a lot. I will say this - when you call, the staff can sound like they're a bit clueless and disconnected from the registration system they have online for classes. But if you speak to them face-to-face or email directly with the instructor, they're super nice and get things sorted out just fine. Do not be discouraged by the confusion on the phone -- the classes are really worth it. The store itself is well stocked and the staff know their stuff. I highly recommend Sewtime! There is no parking lot for the store, as with most places in Queens, but it's usually not too bad to find street parking within a block. read more

We called Sewtime to ask for assistance with our vintage Singer 503A Slant-O Matic sewing machine. Steve and the staff at Sew Right are miracle workers. They were able to repair my unrepairable embroidery machine! It was a cloudy day until I got a message from Steve that my machine was fixed And the sun shined! I wouldn't trust my sewing machines to anyone else. This had great reviews online and after contacting Mr. Harvey via email, I decided I would visit. I brought my machine and Mr. Harvey knew exactly what to do to get my machine up and running. The price was reasonable and it was fixed in a matter of days. My sewing machine works like a charm! I had an issue with my stitches and didn't know why that was (I'm a newbie!), so I emailed Mr. Harvey and he responded right away with some advice as to how to fix my problem and it worked! Bottom line is Sew Right gets a high recommend! My girlfriend and I found out about Sew Right from a quilting instructor at The City Quilter. We're both newbies to sewing so we wanted to make sure that we purchased a good machine from someone that was willing to take the time to explain the basics. Maryann spent an hour with us going over the various machines and how they operated. She was so helpful and friendly. When you purchase a machine from Sew Right they include a one-on-one lesson going over the features of the machine and the basics of operating it such as selecting different stitches, loading a bobbin, how different stitches are used etc. You can't beat that kind of customer service. They also have a nice selection of notions and fabrics and the staff are all experienced sewers themselves so they're able to answer any questions you may have. They also have a repair shop on the premises. We're currently taking a 4 week basic sewing class at Sew Right; our first class was yesterday. Pat Freeman is our instructor and she's not only experienced but is so funny. This is going to be a fun class and we're looking forward to it. So far, in our two visits and several emails with the staff of Sew Right, we've spoken to Harvey, Mary Ann, Laurie, and Pat. All of them are so friendly. Everyone makes you feel welcome. They talk to you as though you're a person and not a customer. It's no wonder why Sew Right has been around for over 20 years. If you're looking to buy supplies, a sewing machine, or are looking for a repair shop for your machine; you have to visit Sew Right. You won't be disappointed. I wanted to make something for my baby but i haven't used a sewing machine before. When I went there with my husband, i told them i have no experience to use any machine. Then one of staffs explained each machine for us and recommend the best one that fits me. They even showed me how to use the machine in person; threading, how to use bobbin from the very basic things. Everyone is so nice there. They seem like they love what they are doing there. I got introduced to this place by a friend who got a Pfaff machine from here. I have never heard of that brand ever. I wouldn't call myself an expert nor an amateur sewer but I have been sewing and embroidering for over 5 years now on a regular home machine. I fell in love with the features this brand offers, especially the Pfaff Sensation Pro which is meant for both sewing and embroidering with a huge LCD screen. I came in for a test drive to see if this machine was the one for me. Was greeted by Barbara who was very helpful in explaining any questions I had. I was just awed by what it could do. The numerous fonts...graphics...options to easily make the designs right on the screen for placement. The machines aren't the only thing that's awesome here though, can't forget about all the workers who call themselves a "family" which just makes you feel at ease. They genuinely have pride in what they do there which is sell/promote/teach/help/repair. I have never felt so relaxed at a business like this to total strangers. The environment was cheerful. Everyone was so helpful. The prices for the machines are less than what you would get anywhere else. If you're lucky enough to get a floor model it's even better! They offer financing as well as free lifetime classes and services i believe. They offer you a number to call any reasonable time when you need help on what you're stuck on, whether it be on a project or just a troubleshooting on your machine. After purchasing the Sensation Pro I was just expecting to be left with a receipt and boxes in hand but nope...John the Tech opened up everything and setup on the table to make sure that the parts were good and that I knew what I was doing right in front of me. He taught me the basics of how to wind the bobbin, thread the top, and thread the bottom; as well as some features on the stitches and explaining what some of the doo-hickeys were that came with it. I ran out of time before I was able to learn more but have been insisted to come back again to learn more about all the options this machine has to offer. I was even offered to use "Facetime" with Susy haha! I have a windows phone ;) Street parking was no trouble at all. Once you step into this wonderful establishment you get to see some works of quilts people have done from classes offered. They also have loads of different kinds of sewing and embroidery threads, buttons, needles, stabilizers, zippers, ribbons, fabrics, patterns, and much more. This place is a dream come true for a crafter like me or anyone beginning to fall in love with this hobby/line of work. I wish I had known about this place sooner!
