Wonderful selection of batik and Hawaiian fabrics. A whole wall of Hawaiian quilt patterns, easy kits for small projects. Excellent service, friendly welcoming. Sew Special is a Maui institution and has been providing the island with fabrics and textile supplies for over 40 (!!) years. They are a locally owned and operated sewing and quilting store that has a wide array of products available for all your crafting needs. If you can't find the item you're looking for, they can special order materials for you as well. Their current location offers so much more space than their old store and inside you'll find a wall of fabrics, sewing machines, quilting kits, patterns, and more! They even carry products that make great gifts for friends and family like quilts, bags, and face masks. I don't sew or quilt or do any of those things, lol, BUT one of the things I love about Sew Special is the selection of SUPER cute Asian and animal themed fabrics. They have some really unique prints and I especially love the Hawaii, food themed prints that feature items like musubi, lau lau, sushi, etc. I've purchased them for things I've had made for friends and family that turned out really cute! What brought me here on my last visit were the adorable masks in said Hawaii food themed prints which unfortunately sold out by the time I got there. Hapa Maui has a little corner with all her (the owner's daughter) cute handmade items of masks, bibs, blankets, baby teethers, burp cloths, swaddles, and all the things. Patricia is the best! I am so happy we stopped by Sew Special. My husband pointed out this store as we were walking through the mall. I have been looking for cute monstera masks but couldn't find any at souvenir and t-shirt stores. Why not buy the fabric and sew my own? As soon as I walked in, all I could think was wow... Like a child in a candy store. The popular Hawaiian themed and ocean life prints were in the front of the store, sorted by color. As you move further into the back, you will find more and more other themes like Japanese ninjas with spam, llamas, dogs, flowers, basically anything you can think of! I didn't even get through half the store and I already had 8 different prints in hand. Patricia was so helpful with suggesting length of fabric to cut for making masks and how I could do other things with it too. She is the absolutely sweetest, and her energy and passion for fabrics and sewing is very apparent. Makes me even more excited about making masks with these prints! They even have a fabulous online system set up so I can order more when I return back to mainland U.S.! Do stop by if you can, I promise you you this is the best part of the mall :) read more

My daughter and her gal pal were visiting and they wanted quilting kits for the plane ride home so we tried this store. The fabric is lovely, and so many prints to choose from, but it is very expensive compared to Fabric Mart, so we stuck to quilting kits instead of fabric for clothes. There were a number of kits to choose from, beginners to advanced, and quite a few were hanging on the walls of the store so you could see the finished product and inspect it so you know what exactly you are getting into. Both the girls bought a number of kits including a beautiful sea coloured turtle cushion, a bright Japanese noodle bowl with chopsticks, a cubist covered purse along with a cute pin cushion each. They would have bought a lot more but they had baggage restrictions to think about. The staff were nice. We didn't need any help until the purchase and the cashier was friendly. The girls spent quite a bit of time in store and no one offered them any help, but that was OK as they just wanted to browse and drool over the kits on their own while they narrowed down their choices. Situated in the Queen Ka'ahumanu mall so easy parking and they are open at weekends and also have late nights so there is plenty of time to browse n buy :) read more

This is a beautiful store with gorgeous fabrics. I appreciate that she stocks fabric from all over the world. Her Japanese prints are my favorites- I had to limit the yardage because everything was so richly colored and exceptional. She had batiks from Indonesia and so many other options. California has NOTHING on this gem. I can't STAND the robo choices of Jo-Anne's- where did these beautiful fabrics come from?? Located in the Queen Kaahumanu Shopping Center in Kahului, this shop has beautiful quilts lining the walls and colorful materials of every color and style to peruse. It'll take hours to go through everything! I was looking for specific material, Japanese shibori indigo, and found that as well as beautiful turquoise with gold cotton that will hopefully make a beautiful outfit soon! I'm very torn about how to review Sew Special. I love their fabric selection and they have a lot of stuff you can't find easily on the mainland. They're near my condo and it's great to be able to walk there or easily drive and park. So as far as the actual STORE goes, it's great. The staff....I've been stewing over this for 11 months. I went in there because I needed to straighten a small quilt (maybe 48" x 48") and I don't have that large of a square table at my condo and I didn't want to put it on the floor. I bought most of the supplies I used to make the quilt at Sew Special--like I said above, I live right around the corner. I took my quilt in and asked if I could use one of their (vacant, unused) cutting tables to square it up. This was a 5-10 minute task at most. The staff was super weird about it and very, VERY unfriendly. They actually made me cry. So like I said, I'm torn. I'll end up going back because of the location and selection, but I'll be careful to NEVER interact with the staff again. How horrible is that? BTW, the Maui Quilt Shop in Kihei is smaller but also incredibly well stocked. They were also very friendly and helpful. I wanted a project for my 5 hour plane ride and they suggested Sashiko and helped me find a kit. ????? read more

This is a very nice store in the Queen Kaahumanu Shopping Centre. They have a huge selection of cotton fabrics. I especially love the batik prints . They have lots of notions but limited sewing patterns . However I found there prices very high . The average fabric starts at $12.98 per yard . Better deals to be found at Fabric Mart + Discount Fabric Warehouse. The staff were very friendly, a good place just to browse around. read more

(grin) * * * The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable ... the selection of tools, fabrics, and notions are overwhelming ... the store is well organized, neat, and clean. * * * I visited several times just to make sure I didn't miss anything or any facet of their wonderful store. I also captured many, many images of fabric offerings and store organization. I could simply stand in there for hours interacting with that staff members and visitors... well, over the course of my stay on Maui, I did just that. * * * IF you happen by the island for any purpose at all, make sure you drop by the store to gaze in wonder at all the sewing, quilting, and embroidery possibilities abound there... immerse yourself in it and savor it as long as you can... it was a wonderful, uplifting, and educational experience for me. Sew Special has been at Ka'ahumanu for as long as I can remember. They're a family owned store, and they have a huge selection of fabrics, sewing/quilting supplies, and machines. The person who runs the store most of the time, Patricia, is very knowledgeable about their stock and can help fine tune or come up with ideas for projects. A long time favourite. This shop has an excellent range of high quality designer fabrics. A person could easily spend hours (and I have) just scanning through all the shelves to find all the hidden treasures. A great selection of Amy Butler, Alexander Henry, Joel Dewbery and such, Batiks, Hawaiian prints, tropical barkcloths, Japanese fabrics and more cottony goodness. The super friendly staff are very eager to offer any sort of help you might need. I lost count of how many times they asked me if I needed a hand, or wanted something cut as my stack of bolts grew. When they closed their long established store at the front of the mall I was devastated. They had a great selection of fabric, quilting patterns, and the one of best selection of sewing notions on island. Not to worry! They have reopened where the old Borders used to be (Borders has moved up front). They are even larger and more diverse. Tons and tons of fabric, patterns, and notions! I always stop by this wonderful quilt/fabric store. I followed them from their store in the front of the mall to the bigger store in the back and now back to a nice spot in the front again. The staff has always been welcoming without any pressure to buy. Sometimes I just need to look at all the beautiful colors. Sew Special is a must-go-to whenever I'm in Maui. They have beautiful sample quilts hanging on the walls. Lots of Hawaiian and tropical-themed quilt patterns and kits. They have a large selections of fabric, but I'm mostly interested in the Hawaiian, Asian, and sea life themes. The prices are not cheap and you can get many of the same Hawaiian and Asian prints for cheaper at Fabric Mart and Discount Fabric Warehouse. They offer quilt classes and sewing classes which I would take if I were not a visitor only here for a short time. They also sell many fat quarters and beautifully coordinated kits for pillowcases and table runners for those quick projects. I took off one star because the prices are not as good as the other two discount fabric stores. You can find a 10% off fabrics coupon in one of the Maui Gold brochures. read more
