At the recommendation of the young man behind the counter I got the Italian Cheesesteak. 4 sizes, I got the biggest, 11". This was a big boy cheesesteak. A lot of meat. Sewards is a very unassuming blue collar place with a 60's style feel. With a very casual atmosphere one might not think much of the place at 1st. A family owned business for over 50 years - once you get your cheesesteak you'll know why their still in business. Best in the Lehigh Valley and beyond, I like Sewards better than Ginos or Pats in Philadelphia. I heard they have a great burger but I only seem to go there when I can't get a cheesteak off my mind. When I was there recently I saw the cook grab a fresh bag of freah chopped meat to make someone a burger. It looked fantastic - so I will go back to try one for myself soon! I went in on a Saturday and no one acknowledged my presence, not the owner (whom I had a great conversation with on my first visit), the cook (spoke with him too), or the lady assisting today. We were traveling from Virginia and stopped here based on all the reviews raving about the philly steaks. Not sure what people around here consider 5 star, but it was a total let down. The service was slow, the place was a bit run down, and the cashier forgot we were sitting at the counter. Then the philly steak- if you can even call it that- was the worst I've ever had. Fries were crispy and delicious. Only complaint I could reasonably make is that you can't add fried peppers to steaks. Only have banana peppers. A couple of weeks ago a friend and I went here to have some cheese steaks. We had heard through word of mouth and had read reviews here on Yelp about Sewards cheese steaks so we had to eat there and see for ourselves. We showed up approx 11:30 AM on a Tuesday and sat at the counter. We were greeted and handed menus. I chose the medium cheese steak with onions and a small order of fries. The cheese steak came out extremely hot with fresh moist meat on a fantastic roll. The size of the cheese steak was massive for what would be considered medium sized. The fries were delicious and plentiful. The atmosphere is not unlike Zandy's which is to say it's caught in a time warp and hasn't changed in years and I love it . Don't change a thing about it. This is another Allentown historical gem and a tradition in local fare. If your searching for a great cheese steak in the city in an atmosphere that harks back to the early sixties this is your place. read more

Heard good things about Sewards and was AHS graduate when he coached. But whoever made our steak sandwiches today should be off the grill. The steak meat was so dry it was not edible. The large soft roll had no evidence of having had steak sandwich meat in it because the meat was so dry and over cooked. Very little sauce which was watery. Very little onions. Maybe the grill person was off his game the night I had a craving for cheesesteak. This was the WORST cheesesteak I ever had in all my years. The whole order was wrong to start. Cheese steak hoagie should be lettuce, tomato, raw onions and oregano on top. Didn't get the raw onions. Meat was very dry, couldn't find the cheese except for a lump, and worst of all the lettuce was put on the bottom under the meat!! Why would anyone want hot lettuce?? I have had the Brass Rail's cheese steak sandwich and those at Zandy's and in Philly, home of the cheesesteak. Seward's cheesesteak remained my favorite until I became a vegetarian and then fell in love with a veggie version from a restaurant in Philly. But in the valley, Seward's had the best. The Brass Rail disappointed -too much gristle. Zandy's was more tolerable, but still had more gristle than I liked. Zandy's had great service. I only ever got takeout from Sewards, so can't speak to the service. read more

Seward's located on 17th and union in Allentown, was Recommended by a few co-workers, Mike and Mike. So my wife and I decided to meet them for lunch. We both had a cheese steak hoagie and split a large Boardwalk fries. My co-workers had a chicken cheese steak and a regular cheese steak. My cheese steak hoagie was awesome. I'm not exaggerating when I say that their cheesesteaks are probably the best cheesesteaks I've ever had. The meat was excellent quality and seemed very lean compared to other cheese steaks I've had. Sewards doesn't need to use fatty meat to add flavor, they taste perfect just the way they are. The lettuce and tomatoes were crisp and fresh. And stayed crisp down to the last bite. The roll was awesome!! Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. I asked the owner while I was paying where he gets them. They have them delivered fresh daily from the Philadelphia area. He also said that they are usually still warm when he receives them, and the smell is great. It made me hungry all over again. The boardwalk fries are fresh cut, and fried to order they are very very good. Also a large is more than enough for two people. I don't usually order that style of French fry but decided to try them since they make them there, I'm glad I did. Mike wanted me to add that the chicken steak was also very good.
