I have to admit that I'm conflicted about writing a review. On the one hand Gil was absolutely awesome. On the other hand, another 5-star review might lead to Gil getting busier and having less availability. However, my experience with Gil was so great that I'd be remiss if I didn't let the Yelp community know. In my 40+ years, this was my first professional manscaping/waxing experience and while I don't have any data points to compare, I will say that it will be very hard for anyone to match Gil. First off, Gil was great about getting back to me via email. I had quite a few pre-scaping questions and Gil took the time to answer them all. In addition, Gil sent out information out about what he needed to me to do pre-waxing as well as detailed instructions regarding post-wax care. I have to admit that I had images of that hair removal scene from the 40-Year Old Virgin dancing around in my head. Add in that I was going for a modified Brazilian and it created a shade of doubt. Gil was able to explain how (and why) his prep process made sure that my experience would be nothing like the movie. Third, Gil kept the conversation going through the entire process. Not in a rambling, random way but he was able to mix topics in with explaining what he was doing each step of the way. It helped put me at ease...and you definitely want to be at ease when there is a clipper buzzing around your package. Fourth, Gil took the time ask me what I wanted as well as offering some suggestions on styling Lastly, the wife got a preview when I got home and started the post-wax care routine. Wow this place is awesome! Once you go up to the 2nd floor of this building on Market you find yourself surrounded by these small shops/clinics/salons by established talent in the grooming business. I believe the only thing I didn't see was a place that does nails. Well Gil greets you with the warmest welcome to his shop and gives you a chance to ask any questions after his brief explanation of how everything works which was cool because after that my mind was at ease. The process was fast and done within minutes due to my lack of hair. Of course waxing will hurt a bit bit I'm guessing tattooing is more painful because its an actual needle and major plus was Gil kept everything cool and not an awkward moment from start to end. Although it was only my first time I believe I will be doing this regularly because it feels so good being smooth and hairless. Gil is a nice down to earth guy who will make you feel very comfortable in his downtown studio (1/2 block from Montgomery Muni/BART.) Meticulous is the first word I think of when I think of how great the two waxes have been. And meticulous is what you want when it comes to having hair waxed. This means complete professionalism with latex gloves used (who knows who or what part of the body was being waxed before me), care in determining what type of wax to apply to what part of the shoulders and back to maximize removal and minimize discomfort. And that is another great thing about Gil. He pays close attention to my reaction to the process so that it is as comfortable as it can possibly be. The other thing is that the effect has been great. No ingrown hairs (I am good at following his directions for follow up care) and it seems to last longer than when I went to other waxers. Again, it's meticulous. Exactly what I want. I feel guilty that I haven't written this review sooner. I first met Gil when he was first starting his business. He confided in me that when he was in training, the majority of waxing he had to do was lady-waxing, but his goal was to offer services to the gentlemen... so he needed practice. He offered to wax my back and shoulders for free. Of course I agreed and he was GREAT! I'm not particularly hairy, but I like to get my back, shoulders, and booty done occasionally. I've gone to a few places before and Gil is the best I've had. He makes it about as painless as possible, he's comforting, and he's always jovial and professional. I'm really glad I discovered him. Since opening his rather modest studio, he's not waxing for free anymore, but his prices are still extremely competitive. I also really appreciate the fact that he's friendly and seems genuinely concerned about your satisfaction with his work, as evidenced by his follow-up emails that ask how you're doing after the session. If you are tired of never finding a place where you feel comfortable or are afraid that whatever you find is just in it for the money please look no further then Gil. He works alone, you don't have to worry about seeing other people or dealing with anyone else but him. Being a male and having a big issue with my body hair I've always found it hard finding a place or someone that makes you feel comfortable and doesn't drain your pocket book in doing so. First off Gil is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. Really makes you believe that he's not judgmental, just trying to help and he loves what he does. Nothing is free but even still he tries to work with you. I'd say he's one in a million with everything he's done for me. He always checks in and makes sure your progress or treatments are going well. Always answers your questions and never gives up on you (I told him I'd write a review months ago and I didn't, sorry Gil). When I went to see him I didn't know what to expect. He helped me with all my questions made me feel comfortable and waxed everything I asked. He then (this is the best part) broke down every issue I've ever had after waxing. It took a while but he took time out to give me sprays that would help me with my after issues since I have very sensitive skin and explained how to use them in detail. I had always paid for an expensive salon before Gil and never got real answers to breaking out afterwards or making sure that I wouldn't get ingrown hairs once the hair started to grow back. I even left for a trip the next day after going months of not waxing on a plane in the heat and with everything Gil gave me plus his instructions, I didn't break out once or even had one ingrown. He still checked up on me and made sure I didn't have any problems. His mother was in town and he still gave me extra time. So he deserved the fat tip I gave him because I was thankful. Listen guys and girls, Gil is for real, nice, non judgmental, looks for feedback to become better and is always willing to work with his clientele. I paid close to 400 per session thinking I was getting the best (and this is outrageous!). Gil is the best your going to find in the Bay Area. You're making a big mistake if you don't believe me. Have always wondered about waxing...I'm not a super hairy guy but things can definitely get out of control after a while and I'm really bad with trimmers, really, really bad, like bloody bad, and I'm not English either. So, after seeing so many 5 star reviews I made an appointment with Gil @sf manscaping. I got lucky and he had an opening in only 4 days. I was a tad nervous, for many reasons. I wanted to leave with the same amount of blood, scrotum skin, and dignity that I entered with. Thanks to Gil I left with all of that and actually left feeling quite a bit better about myself. It didn't hurt nearly as much as I expected...I have a few tattoos and it's not really even on the same scale, I was pleasantly surprised by that because I'm not really into pain. It's more of a brief twinge and to not know when it's happening is easier than watching imo...Gil quickly soothes the pissed off skin and also explains his every move so you really feel involved and aware of what's going on.
