I have dined here a few times. I wrote this review previously and it disappeared. I'm going to repost this review. While the sushi is great here. I question the service the last time I was here. There were two of us and the waiter refused to split the check. We were told because this was policy and it was written on the menu. I don't recall seeing this. I do understand not splitting checks is a normal practice for large parties. This was not that. I have never returned. I don't know that I will. This location isn't convenient to my part of town and honestly I haven't thought to go here since.

I absolutely love this place. Been coming for years. Whether take out or dine in, BOGO sushi or pad Thai & chicken teriyaki, they're always consistently good food, good service, and good prices. Something that I think they do better than a lot of other sushi places are the rolls on the BOGO menu. They have tons to pick from and they're all well priced. We just recently got 4 specialty rolls for less than $38.

Pad Thai (chicken)

6/7 visit: We had the taste for sushi and wanted to eat before hitting up Trader Joe's. Never shop on an empty stomach lol! I was happy to learn they offer BOGO rolls so this is a win. A very nice restaurant with a calm and quiet atmosphere. Well, we stopped by during lunch hours so I can only speak for this timeframe. We were quickly seated and promptly served. Our server was friendly and polite. He was familiar with the menu and helped us with any questions we had. We ordered chicken pad Thai, shrimp tempura roll and the spider roll. The rolls were good sized portions and flavorful. The pad Thai on the other hand didn't fit to my liking. The reason was the noodles used and the taste. It had a very sweet taste which I didn't like and they didn't use pad Thai noodles I am used to. They used a thinner noodle, which normally I would love but not in my pad Thai. I'm used to a thicker noodle. I would visit again for the bogo sushi if in the area.

Went early this evening and enjoyed the peace and quiet that this place offered. The service is excellent and the food is delicious! I had the Pad See Ewe and the Thai House salad with peanut dressing. The portions are LARGE!!! In the picture this is about half of my order as I couldn't finish it and took it to go!

Kee Mao Lunch with Shrimp

This is a favorite lunch place for meeting up with friends and relatives as the atmosphere is quiet so you can actually carry on a conversation and hear it. It's in the Trader Joe's shopping center on Wake Forest Road near the beltline. Plenty of parking, even though it's a busy strip mall. They do take reservations, but usually there's no problem getting in (at least for lunch, can't attest for dinner). Love the Thai lunch specials. Not huge quantities, but very tasty and nicely prepared. Kee Mao and Basil Chicken are favorites. Do know if you order shrimp on a lunch meal, it will be just three. Great prices for the quality. They also have Japanese items on the menu including some BOGO rolls. I personally stick with Thai here, but have been with others who were happy with their Japanese selections. TIP: Look on line for their daily specials for both lunch and dinner. They also usually participate in Restaurant Week when it comes up.

Massaman Curry with shrimp

Delicious food at this combo Japanaese/Thai spot. It's a storefront shop in a strip mall an hired by Trader Joe's. Plenty of free parking. The restaurant shares an entrance with a coffee shop. We were there for an early dinner so tables were plentiful but the place filled up quickly. Service is quick and pleasant. Approximately 10 minutes from order to service. Massaman curry with shrimp is delicious. Perfect shrimp, onion, avocado, potatoes in a pool of creamy curry sauce, slightly sweet with the tiniest bit of heat. Plus a crock of sticky rice to mix in. A favorite combination, done well. 1 point off for leaving the shrimp tails-on. It's a pain to fish the shrimp out and de-tail. Pineapple dried rice is a unique and tasty choice. Freshly wok-ed fried rice, tossed with chunks of pineapple and a few raisins make a nice combo of sweet and savory. This option included tofu - a BIG portion of cubed tofu, nicely stir-fried with a crunchy outside and soft inside. Lastly a couple of sushi rolls. The star is the sweet potato rolls. Small chunks of tempura-style sweet potato ensconced with veggies and topped with avocado. Tasty! A full menu of other choices to try... Will be back to this place!

Wolfpack and Samurai Roll

Was told by a couple of coworkers that I must try Shabu Shabu as their sushi is amazing and I have to agree! I arrived at lunchtime, so it was pretty busy. The manager warmly greeted me and took me to my table. My waiter was a little cold and it felt like he was rushed. He sat down my menu and asked me right away what I wanted. I told him that I needed a couple of minutes and he did not come back or even around me for like 10 minutes. Before my stomach could eat itself he reappeared and took my order. I got their BOGO sushi deal, and decided to get the Wolfpack roll and Samurai roll. The Wolfpack roll has crab, avocado, scallions, and tempura flakes. The Samurai roll had cream cheese, salmon, and scallions. Wow! They give you a generous portion of fresh sushi along with ginger and Wasabi. Everything is fresh and so worth the wait! It still stays good as I could not finish the rolls and took them with me. I cannot wait to come back as a couple of dudes next to me had their Thai basil which came with tons of veggies! They highly recommend it as they get it every time. So I will be back!

The atmosphere in the restaurant was very inviting. The food was acceptable. We were a party of 8 people, and many of us commented that we didn't receive the kind of taste explosion that we were anticipating with the dishes that we ordered. One of our diners was from Thailand, and she felt the food was decent, not exceptional

oh my GOD!!! The service, the food, the people?? I've truly never had better sushi and service in my whole LIFE. It was so delicious and everything was so fresh!! it's a little expensive when getting two alcoholic drinks, but it was so worth it! Joy was a literal joy to have as a server, she always made sure we had plenty of water, and that we were always doing okay! I cannot WAIT to come back here!!

Pad Thai with shrimp
Vanessa T.

I stopped by here with some friends and got a Pad Thai with shrimp. The service was great and our waitress was very attentive and helpful! The Pad Thai had different noodles than I'm used to it but it was great.

Best green curry I've had in a while. Simple and excellently balanced. I chose shrimp and it was the perfect mix.

I'd ordered very enjoyable, sushi takeout from here but it was my first experience dining in. The menu is optimized to allow choices between Thai or Japanese style food. The cocktail menu is fairly priced and full of variety. We enjoyed each item and our server was very helpful with "tie breaker" type recommendations. We'll be back.

Awesome takeout option! I spontaneously ordered takeout lunch online on a rainy day, and ShabaShabu did not disappoint. With an estimated wait time of up to 45min, it was ready under 20! Such quick response and great quality. Next time, I'll definitely come back to eat inside - the interior is lovely!

Half eaten delicious Coconut Cake
Haley N.

Best Thai place ever!!!! The homemade coconut cake is to die for - not too sweet but light fluffy and airy. Tom kha is perfect and the red curry is definitely the best I've had in years. Couldn't even critique anything even if I wanted to. Plus the manager Peter is super sweet and will go out of his way to help you with a smile:) will definitely be my new spot!

They all said it was the best sushi they've ever had. I was super impressed by the expansive drink menu. I ordered a nice red blend and plan to order a Sake flight next time. I loved the atmosphere and didn't realize it was so big inside. Our server was super nice and helpful when ordering. I ordered the teriyaki chicken without onions and our server was so awesome that she let me know that the ginger dressing on my salad contained onions. She wanted to make sure I didn't have an allergy. How amazing?! The chicken teriyaki and the veggies it was served with were absolutely AMAZING! Seriously, IDK what they did to those veggies but this may have been the best meal I've ever had! They gave my husband a scoop of mango icecream with a candle in it for his birthday. Love that! Knowing how quickly their tables disappear, I checked for reservations on the drive over, fully expecting disappointment. Instead, a small miracle: an open table. I booked it before the screen could change its mind. Upon arrival, the host greeted us with the gentle chaos that only a true local favorite can produce. Our table wasn't quite ready "just waiting on a few folks to wrap up" so we lingered near the entryway, watching the ebb and flow of diners. A brief mix-up had us nearly escorted to a table before being pulled back, but within minutes we were seated, no worse for the detour. Our spot was perfect: a front-row view of the sushi bar, where chefs moved with the quiet intensity of people who know their craft is being watched and appreciated. The restaurant hummed around us servers weaving between tables, the soft clatter of plates, the low murmur of regulars who clearly consider this their second home. Our server, whose name I wish I'd caught, was a standout. Attentive without hovering, candid about the kitchen running a bit behind, and consistently thoughtful with updates. His honesty made the experience feel more intimate, more human. Cocktails arrived first, followed by a parade of sushi and small plates. Everything was fresh, balanced, and deeply satisfying, the kind of meal that doesn't need theatrics to make an impression.

They had the perfect char on the dumpling without making it too seared. The Sashimi plate was incredible, each piece of fish melted in your mouth. If I have to give one critique I'd say our yellow tail was still a little frozen but that didn't stop me from devouring it. Crispy Salmon Roll was light and refreshing and their Rainbow Roll was like no other I've had. My husband and I have two reference points when it comes to sushi; mine is Japan where I was introduced to it as a young Marine, his is Hawaii where had the most amazing sushi about 5 years ago. Not many places can compare to those experiences but Sushi Mon was VERY close!

I had to ask for ginger sauce, but the yum yum sauce had already been put on the table in a squeeze bottle. Everything was perfectly cooked, plentiful and yummy. I would probably not order the scallops again because the flavor and texture were more fish-like than scallop like. Loved the chicken and all the veggies. Fried rice was good as well. Not only that, the broth complimented the rest of the ingredients; the egg was enjoyable. My only (minor) complaint is the portion size of the ramen itself. It was smaller than I would like. The lady that served me was probably (best guess) the owner. Her service was impeccable. In addition, Kinoko has a pleasing amenity not found in most restaurants: an AC outlet at every table that was by the wall. This was very handy for a heavy user of laptops and phones like myself. Five stars, no hesitation…read more I heard about Sono Sushi through Resy and finally made it in. It's located in downtown Raleigh on Fayetteville Street, right next to the ABC 11 studios, easy to find and a great spot if you're already downtown. The ambiance is great and fits the food well. There's a nice mix of seating, tables along the windows looking out onto the street, high top tables, traditional dining tables, and a sushi bar if you want to sit up close and watch everything being made. It feels lively without being loud, and works well whether you're there for a date night or a more casual meal. We started with the Aburi appetizer, torched salmon belly, ooba, salmon roe, Japanese seabream, yuzu kosho, and ponzu, and it was outstanding. Everything worked together perfectly, rich, bright, and balanced. I also ordered ikura and ebi, even though I meant to order ama ebi, but no regrets there. Still excellent. We shared the Poke Roll with wakame, avocado, cucumber, mango, tuna, salmon, hamachi, and Sono poke sauce, and it was very good, fresh, flavorful, and well composed without being overdone. My wife ordered the spicy miso ramen and loved it. The broth was the star, deep and comforting, and the pork chashu pieces were massive, in a good way. I went with the chicken katsu curry, panko fried chicken thigh with house curry and koshihikari rice, something I haven't had since Little Tokyo in LA a few years ago, and it tasted like home. Comforting, familiar, and exactly what I was hoping for. For drinks, I ordered the "SONO? SO-YES!" entirely because of the name, but also because I love blood orange. Casamigos Blanco tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, coconut cream, simple syrup, and blood orange juice, it was excellent. My only complaint is that I wanted more of it. My wife got the Okinawa Spritz, a play on an Aperol spritz with passionfruit, and it was even better than the original. We finished with the yuzu cheesecake. I debated between that and the ube cheesecake, but since this is a Japanese restaurant, yuzu felt right, and it absolutely delivered. Overall, everything from the food to the drinks hit. This is a place I would happily return to, and honestly, I'm already looking forward to the next visit.

I think it was just at the height of rush hour and they were doing their best- I would just pad your expected time here because it is quite popular. Loud environment, concrete floors with no rugs or anything. LOVED the Gyosa!!! Like table slapping good. Some of the best I've ever tried. Ordered the Grand Piano and Umi Kazan rolls, both good with shrimp tempura but the Grand Piano was far "denser" with the blue crab in the middle. The Umi Kazan was my favorite with the shredded crab on top. I liked the assortment of options and how you could customize if you wanted. Also ordered a Malbec wine- quite good. Our waiter was very accommodating, just slammed for the dinner rush. I'd definitely return! The neon koi fish and paper umbrellas were stunning.
