This place was pretty darn tasty. I had the mac and cheese app and burned my mouth trying to eat it too quickly. I just couldn't stop because it was so yummy! It had a nice crunchy top and a creamy, homemade sauce. The fish tacos were well-seasoned, with plenty of crunchy cabbage to balance out the spicy mayo sauce. For a bar-style restaurant, they definitely had a lot of options for people wanting fresh, healthy food. The beer selection was decent, but I've seen more impressive ones. This awesome little place is nestled on a cute street filled with shops and places to stop in. The downtown area is absolutely adorable, and for someone like me who was just visiting, was the perfect place to visit after doing some trail running nearby. Our group of 3 got seated quickly and ordered a round of beer. Their selection was good & they had a full bar as well. The interior matched the feel of the downtown area and was definitely a local favorite going by how many people were in there for lunch. All of us ordered a chicken salad and it was large and fresh but I wish it would have had more veggies on it. Like I said, it was a large salad but the toppings were sparse. The Carribean Jerk Chicken Sliders are BOMB!!! Make sure you try those! All of their food is great! They have good wings and fresh cut fries! This last time we went yesterday, we tried the loaded sour cream potato wedges!! So YUMMY!!! They have cheese sauce all over them with bacon, chives, and tomatoes! Very good! Downtown Canal Winchester is a great little area and Shades is in the heart of it. I think it's literally placed right where the canal used to run. The food and atmosphere is typical for a sports bar, though it is appropriate for families as the bar is in it's own section to the left of the main dining area. I have always had good service and food. They also have decent draft beers. what else.... support the local and go here over O'Charlies, BW3's or one of those other ones over off of Gender. read more

Got takeout for the first time here and the service was quick, the food was delicious, and the staff were friendly!

Stopped by after work, around 4pm. Order some mozzarella sticks as an appetizer and was severely disappointed. They weren't very good for almost $6 an order. The marinara sauce was boiling hot, like it just came out of the microwave and the mozzarella sticks were luke warm. They came out rather quickly so I don't know if they were previously made and just waiting for someone to order them or not. It looked like the bartender was the only server during this time so this made service rather slow. Currently 7 tables and 4 people at the bar. I ordered pizza and wings to go and I will have to update on those as I am writing this while I wait for my order. Draft beer selection was nice with 24 beers on tap. I ordered the Yuengling as we don't have this available where I live. It was nice and cold! Edit: my to go pizza was messed up but the bartender took care of me and I got a drink on the house. This place is always busy. Right in the heart of historic Canal Winchester. The building was built right in the old canal. Awesome menu choices. So many good dishes from which to choose. I've read some Yelpers saying this is a Roosters knock-off. The owner was a Roosters employee, went out on his own, was not allowed to serve bone-in wings for 5 years due to a non-compete agreement. Now the menu is MUCH larger and better than Roosters. read more

This was our first visit here. And not our last! We were able to stop in around 9pm on a Saturday night. There was no wait, and the place looked very popular. It's In a nice neighborhood and we were able to locate a parking spot right out front but would have felt comfortable walking a longer distance. My boyfriend got the councilman which is their version of a Philly cheesesteak sub and it was huge with meat coming out of each side. It had a very authentic taste. I ordered their traditional breaded wings and although I'm Not a fan of breaded wings they were mighty tasty and the size of the wings were large. We split an order of cheese fries and the size didn't disappoint there either. The perfect size if you love a large shareable appetizer. Big Bang for your buck all around! They serve Miller high life $3.50 which is hard to find at some places and their daiquiris were very affordable at $4.50. The best part of our visit was our waitress. I can not remember her name but her positive attitude and perkiness will Make us ask for her again. She looked extremely happy to be there and made the whole visit! The food was delicious and affordable $33 before tip for 2 daiquiris, 2 beers, humongous cheese fries, a sub, and order of wings. We can not wait to come back and try more of the menu. Good bar food with a casual atmosphere. I don't think I've ever had a dish from here that wasn't at least "good." This place is absolutely packed on a Friday night. The tiny waiting area will be packed full and people will spill out onto the sidewalk. Unless that is your scene, I recommend going during off hours. read more

Stopped here for the first time with a friend this week . With less than an hour until close and I was afraid we get rushed service and subpar food; this was not the case. Not only was our server/bartender friendly and attentive, the manager popped by to see if we needed anything. The food was quick and the wings were meaty, hot, and rather tasty. Went there on Saturday 9/28/2029 around noon was really busy lot's of families with kids . It's a really laid back place a normal Midwest type restaurant ceiling are really low so the noise can be deafening at times .The bathrooms are clean but really small like being in a telephone booth so there is normally a line. I was in a large group of ten people the service was fine all the orders were right . The drink service could have been a little better a few people went dry a couple of time and had to wait a little bit to get another drink. In town on business and this spot was recommended for lunch. The place was busy and getting busier by the minute. The bar area and main dining areas had high-tops, booths and tables TVs tuned to sports and welcoming staff. I ordered a wedge salad and buffalo shrimp which were promptly delivered. The shrimp had a hopper sauce and mmmmm mmmmm good. If I lived here I would be ordering these all the time. The wedge salad was generous in portion and tasted as expected. There was lots to choice from on the menu and looking around the dining area variety was everywhere. Clearly people liked this place and they did not focus on one style but focused on good food and pleasant staff. So I stumbled over the town of Canal Winchester on a middle of a beautiful sunny weekday (I still have no idea how I ended up here) and as I usually do I checked with the locals. Shade on the Canal was highly recommended obviously. Located in the heart of cute tiny Canal historic downtown, this place is pleasantly "HUUUUUGE" in Trump voice (this whole white Canal town looked like a bunch of Trumpeters anyway haha) . The service was good and courteous. Our server was prompt, friendly and menu knowledgeable. Servers here in general are on the younger side and pretty easy on the eye so be extra careful if you are a guy taking a date there. Just saying... Food was good but not wow great I gotta come back here again. I had the seasonal spicy meatballs special and some wings. My friend had the Chicken sandwich. She mentioned fries were too salty. Fresh, hot , but way too salty. We were pleased overall with the service. Their wings seemingly looked like Roosters', good, but not as good, a bit on greasier side. The chicken sandwich was good but the sandwich kept falling apart (user error?) haha. Wings had good flavor. The meatballs (well thanks to my Italian/Mediterranean blood) I can be a bit picky about anything Italian but in this case they were average pub style meatballs. Not big homestyle rolled veal or beef or anything; just the average very small pork meatballs more like Swedish style which for me at least... Meh... NEXT! Shade on the Canal is good for location and given the other options in Canal Winchester. Place is clearly frequented by regular local clientele. If I happen to be in Canal again I'll stop by again maybe try the philly steak or the burgers, but I won't go out of my way from Columbus for it. read more

Best Ruben sandwich I've had this place seems to be fairly steady on business . We came in around 2:30 on a Thursday and they were pretty busy 1 waitress and a hostess . They work so well together to provide the best service . Love the frog decor and the tv's entertained my husband with the sportsman channel . So I ordered the Ruben it comes with fries and thousand island dressing on the side . It was fantastic the hubby ordered the Philly cheesesteak and was pleasantly surprised with the flavors . I've been going to Shade's nearly every Friday since they (re)opened as a sports bar and it was always consistent with great service and food. Over the last few months, the service, in general, has steadily gone downhill. Management is lacking, as they have weeded out all of the servers who have been there for years, knew the customers, and were good at what they did. They were personable, friendly, and on-the-ball. They have been pushed out by giving the new servers the shifts they've had for years, eliminating weekend double shifts, and bringing in servers that are not friendly, knowledgeable, or efficient. Many are downright slow and inattentive. I personally know a couple of servers there, so I have a little inside info on what's been going on lately.. The food is still consistently good. Drinks are priced right, but the bartenders have never been able to figure out that a lime goes with a rum and coke or gin and tonic. Overall, I would give the food 5 stars and the drinks 4, based on price alone. Back to the management....Ever since Greg stopped managing this location, things have gone noticeably downhill. The other night, teenagers were running around a large table and playing tag or something. None of these kids had a seat, they were basically loitering, watching their friends eat. They were bothering all of the patrons around, as they were just staring at the table of teenagers. Once we finally said something to the manager, he just laughed and shrugged it off and let the teenagers run the restaurant, disturbing everybody else's dinner. I can't say this always happens, but it's a good example of how the managers treat the customers, and a reflection of how they treat their employees. They need to realize that regular customers matter and keeping a consistent staff with low turnover keeps customers coming back. About a year ago, I would've given a 5-star review. I've always loved this place, but it's sad to see it gradually go downhill. It takes a lot for me to write a bad review, but I feel this needed to be shared. read more

Visited this establishment for the first time. Didn't like the food one bit. I ordered a 1/2 grilled chicken salad and a 5 piece parmesan garlic wings. First of all, the grilled chicken was hard as a rock, no taste at all. My thoughts were... how can a salad of all things taste so bad? Even the blue cheese dressing had no taste. I couldn't understand that for the life of me. The wings....tasteless, no seasoning, no nothing. I looked around and saw the customers eating enjoying their food and I said to myself, these people love this food? Why? This was the first and last time I will visit Shades.
