I have loved Shady Lane at their past and present locations. This is one of the places I go regularly for family gifts. They staff is passionate and knowledgeable about the makers whose work they carry, and they carry such a wide selection of unique items by local artisans, as well as by global artisans. Most of the items I have purchased at Shady Lane fall under the category of jewelry, but I have also been very pleased with their selection of offbeat, small-maker clothing and outerwear. I appreciate that I can buy holiday gifts for a wide range of family members, from babies to adults, under one roof. A typical visit for me involves spending between ten and ninety minutes poring over their collection of Trollbeads (IYKYK). Then I move on to the artisan jewelry, the crystals, and the small woodworking (think jewelry boxes). And then, when possible, I blow kisses to the little dog behind the counter! I've also been to a few of their special events over the years, including a PassionArt Designs glass bead extravaganza. Such a gorgeous little shop! First off, I love the interior round design and how cute it looks in the little Safeway shopping center. This place would fit right in, in downtown Carmel. Really wonderful assortment of girly items, tons and tons of jewelry, little teeny tiny sculptures, scarves, leather bound journals, troll beads, secret boxes and much more. Everything is high quality and very artistic, no made-in-China junk here! I came in for a particular item I needed, found it right away and enjoyed looking at all the other stuff and making mental notes of what I will purchase next time. This shop is a little jewel tucked into the Sharon Heights Shopping Center off Sand Hill Road. It has an artfully curated selection of beautiful and unique items everywhere you look--a huge and varied selection of jewelry, items for the garden, gorgeous glassware, sumptuous journals made of tooled leather... Even the ribbon they use in their (complimentary) gift wrapping is gorgeous. And I love the fact that they feature the work of local artisans. It's a very welcoming place and the owner seems to know a lot of the customers by name. I came to Shady Lane with my daughter to buy a birthday gift for her friend. I remembered the place when it used to be in downtown P.A., since I had bought my wife a black pearl necklace for an anniversary many moons ago. So I was glad to see the business was still going, even in a different spot. I admit, however, I was a bit dubious about the new strip mall location. I needn't have been. Not only is the store in a cute, self-standing, kiosk-like structure, they still carry a great variety of cool jewelry. They also seem to have expanded their variety. My daughter was able to find some beautiful hummingbird earrings for her friend, and in her lower price range. And I was able to browse the higher end stuff for presents for my wife, who's birthday we had celebrated two weeks before...but I figured we were still "in the zone". Sure enough, I found a stunning pair of Roman glass earrings (her favorite) for a not-obscene price, and so an extra birthday present was obtained. (And this from a guy who is not easily swayed by jewelry). The two ladies behind the counter couldn't be friendlier, and they did a top-notch job wrapping up our prizes in exquisite, perfect little packages. Almost too pretty to open. When I heard that Shady Lane was moving from its old location on University Avenue, in Palo Alto, my heart sank. Where would I go for tiny, beautiful earrings that no one else seems to carry, and that fit my ears perfectly? Where else would I find exactly the right gift for a friend, my Mom, my sister, my niece, because the offerings were so varied and the quality consistently so high? Thank goodness the store has moved only a few miles away. And if anything, it's even more beautiful, with jewelry and crafts of great delicacy and taste. Alice, Kris, and Lauren, and the rest of the ladies who work there couldn't be nicer--and they're great at fixing broken jewelry, too; I've brought in everything from shattered Venetian glass earrings to a clasp-less Indian silver bracelet, and they're like new. In a time when indifferent service and mediocre quality tend to be the norm, I'm grateful for Shady Lane. It's a calm and lovely oasis that never fails to make me happy. read more

I've been shopping at Shady Lane as long as it's been around, which is almost 40 years. A year or so ago they moved to a darling little octagon building in the Sharon Heights Shopping Center, just off Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park, where there is plenty of parking. When my daughter was small, any time we went in the store, just to browse, or to find an affordable single earring for her to give her dad on his birthday, they were always so sweet to her! It quickly became her favorite place to shop. It is also the first place I think of if I need an artful gift, or unique piece of jewelry for someone special. And of course, I have a few favorite pieces myself! They also handle artists who make custom pieces. And they have pocket rocks of all varieties! Do ask, if you don't see the wooden chest where they're stored - Fun to have gifts in all price ranges. The new location is even more charming than the old! Everything in that store is beyond over priced. Yes, I understand that businesses need to make money, but this place is really, really overpriced, to the point where it really is not worth it, even if you have created a connection to s stone or a pendant, it's not worth it. I was a huge fan of the former location in Palo Alto, and I'm still a huge fan of the beautiful new location in Menlo Park. They have a wonderful selection of minerals, tumbled stones for $1-2 each, jewelry, scarves, accessories, art pieces, and fun, unique things you won't find anywhere else. Alice and her staff are all friendly and knowledgeable. I love that many of the staff are artisans who can fix or re-work your jewelry for reasonable prices with beautiful results. I had two clasps set for 2 labradorite pendants by Maria, and I'm excited to have Chris re-string the moonstone beads of my bracelet which fell apart. I love this place! read more

Shady Lane is a riteous business. It's been in business since 1975 and is woman owned and operated. It has a wonderful selection with prices that are affordable and beautiful art pieces to give or to keep for yourself. Jewelry is the main thing, but Shady Lane supports the work of local artisans, who are featured around the gallery and some of whom work in the gallery. There are items from all over the world, many of which are "Fair Trade". The gifts are wrapped beautifully with the most amazing ribbon. I started coming to Shady Lane in their old location for their huge selection of Trollbeads. Once you meet owner Alice, you find yourself learning about and admiring and sometimes even buying some of the unique jewelry and other handmade items by local artisans she has in the shop. That is if she isn't giving it to you for free. Ive found some very nice silver w/turquoise and other stone pieces very reasonably priced and their free gift wrap is art In itself.
