Sooo refreshing after a nice day of paddling. They even like to explain what's in your drink. I tried the coconut milk smoothie and it was derrricious. The nice, young lady said they use whole milk (as a heads up). Oh, and there's a fish bowl, with actual fishies, at the center of one of the tables! So different, but pretty awesome! I absolutely LOVE the Taro Black Milk Tea. My kids love all of the fruit smoothies they have tried... lychee, strawberry, pineapple, mango to name a few. I used to come here often and is now my preferred place to go anytime I'm back in Hawaii visiting. It's not so much the service (even though it's not bad) but how simple everything is followed by the quality/taste of their smoothies and teas. If you haven't seen my reviews (which I assume you haven't since I only wrote few) they're all on bubble tea. I am the bubble tea conquerer with a motto of "Gotta drink 'em all"! ;) And as a conquerer with countless bubble tea experiences, I believe this bubble tea's earned itself a rank of 5 stars. For a bubble tea to gain 5 stars from me, it must have the perfect texture for the bubbles and a good tasting tea. If you enjoy the right amount of chewiness in your bubbles and a mildly sweetened tea, then this place is for you! The sweetness level of the tea is less than the average of what I'm used to, so if you like sweet tea then you might want to order a higher sweetness than your usual. I usually get 25% but from here 50% is perfect for me. Bubbles are perfect and it passes all of my bubble standards!! P.S. I read other reviews on here and have crossed some that said their drinks were made too sweet, but as of today (3/27/2018), their drinks are less sweet than other stores. The customer service is always great and they even put the straw in for you if you want :) You can also choose the sweetness level and the boba is free with your smoothie. I believe that they do some sort of taste testing before introducing a new drink. I swear they HAVE to have perfected each and every drink because all of them are so good. We decided to try this place on a whim since we were in the area. We got the Pineapple tea and the avocado smoothie. The Pineapple tea was super good! Very flavorful, and I liked that it came with pineapple jelly instead of it being an upcharge. The avocado smoothie was good, but nothing special. It needed sweetened boba. The boba was cooked well, but it needed to be sweetened, especially in a smoothie like an avocado one. I feel like that would have improved the drinks a lot. The first time I came here, I was greeted by this sweet lady. She gave us recommendations, told us the seasonal fruits, and encouraged us to mix and match whatever we want. I just came here today, and there was a different girl working. She was extremely snappy, rude, and told us we weren't allowed to mix flavors or fruits even for an extra price. What is going on with City Square shopping center's management that makes me and other local chowhounds crazy? It's definitely NOT because this single-story shopping center of 40 plus businesses is site to our favorite Okinawan/Japanese diner Utage Restaurant & Lounge, Ha Long Pho Noodle House, Young's Fish Market, Pancakes & Waffles (we've not tried yet), Chinatown Marketplace and the famous Kamehameha Bakery. But, my complaint is over the dizzying options that one has to make for a refreshing slurp of the milk tea craziness or smoothies. WHY did they have to put 4 milk tea/boba/smoothie drink shops in here? After pigging out at Utage, we, along with a few fellow yelpers, chose to go for a refreshing milk boba tea drink for a light dessert. We had tried 3 out of the 4 shops in this center before when Nadine C. suggested ShaKa ShaKa Express. It became apparent that Nadine had been just been here since she introduced us all to Maggie (the owner) and Maggie remembered Nadine's previous drink selection. We were impressed that ShaKa ShaKa uses fresh fruits (no powders, no artificial flavorings) and hand-pressed cane sugar. You can even request a level of sweetness, too. There were a couple of large refrigerators that were full of uncut fresh fruits and a nice large seating area for customers to hang out. While we placed our orders, Maggie explained that they only use fresh fruits and cut them when they're being used for a drink. By cutting them just before service, allows the fruit to maintain its nutrients and flavors. Also, they cook their tapioca pearls (boba) until they're soft with a little bit of chew to them. They are concerned about quality control and aren't afraid to throw out product that doesn't meet their standards. Everything was fresh and bright, including the bright green walls and fruit menu pictures. They offer medium to XL-sized drinks and the prices are clearly posted. Snacks such as Chinese pancakes, Tea Eggs and cold noodles are available. We've been swayed by the use of fresh fruits, refreshing and natural flavors, good texture of boba and friendly, helpful service of ShaKa ShaKa. Another incentive to return is their loyalty card. Use to buy drinks from here all the time. Their prices have skyrocketed,- it's almost $10 per drink, which is ok if the drinks are good. But my blended Watermelon drink tasted like water with a hint of watermelon. I believe not only did they raise their prices, they are trying to cut cost by diluting the drink. Not only do I love the tea drinks and smoothies, I can vouch for Shaka Shaka's quality products and customer service! I approached auntie Maggie if I could do a story on her shop for my broadcast class in Moanalua because I heard of the fresh ingredients she uses. She was more than happy to do the interview on camera and she was open to showing me her fruit inventory, and prep for her fruits and boba. Auntie Maggie is a REAL sweetheart especially if it's your first time, she's really accommodating-- she'll make sure you know what you're drinking and give you a short lesson haha. It's awesome knowing it's freshly cut, with her having her worker cut them in front of me. Everything happens in the kitchen which stays a secret between her and her workers which I respect. So I see why people may write bad reviews questioning Shaka Shaka's credibility, but I've seen it for myself, and it's the real deal! After interviewing her I learned that she only uses fresh fruits and no artificial flavoring which is hard to find now a days. When making the drinks she uses an ancient Chinese process of boiling. The boba made fresh every hour, cause auntie is serious about her freshness! She demonstrated making the boba outside the kitchen and threw it away after because she didn't want to serve the customers old boba! But besides the great product auntie Maggie wants to make sure that customers have the best experience, so she treats customers like family. We're on a quest to find the island's best boba! But instead of trying milk tea like I always do, I ended up trying this thing called honey boba iced tea? It was actually VERY refreshing and it tasted like honey green tea. Yelp 365 Challenge 2015 #17/365 There's something that puts Shaka Shaka Tea above the rest of the boba places, and that is the fresh fruit they use in their drinks. Most boba places use powder for their drinks, but not here. Although their drinks are a little more pricey than others, it's definitely worth it. They even include the boba for free! My favorite drink from here has to be the fresh coconut smoothie with boba. Definitely have never had a boba drink be so refreshing! My second favorite would have to be the taro smoothie. I've ordered taro from all the other boba places, and this one was for sure the best. It wasn't purple like the others, but it was fresher and better than the others. I like that this place offers small snacks like Poi donuts ($1.50), chips, and a few other things to snack on on the side. The poi donuts are great, and well worth the $1.50. It's sugary and flaky on the outside, and soft on the inside, a perfect match with any of the boba drinks there. They also have a stamp card that when filled up (after 8 drinks) you get a $4 credit towards your next drink. Also, they accept credit cards, but only with a $5 minimum, which isn't hard to do here. It's a little off the beaten path when compared to the other boba spots in town, but definitely worth going there just for the boba. read more
