Finally had the chance to swing by for breakfast. I went with The Number Two (shaka potatoes, eggs, bacon, toast). My date had biscuits and sausage gravy. It was all wonderful. The potatoes are awesome. There's a choice to make a meal of them and i may plan on that next time. The atmosphere is also great. Kinda kitschy. We went for the first time today and were not very impressed. The restaurant was busy and the service staff seemed overwhelmed. To be fair, it was right after the Tacoma marathon finished so there may have been a higher volume than normal. The "famous" Shakabrah potatoes seemed to be nothing more than country style potatoes with a (heavy) dose of Johnny's Seasoning on them. After taking our order the server came back out to tell us the kitchen was out of mushrooms (a strange thing for a breakfast restaurant to run out of, especially when almost half of the menu items have mushrooms) and ask if we were okay with that. The bacon avocado omelette (no mushrooms) and the Chrissy (also no mushrooms) were nothing spectacular. The server asked if we wanted any extra hot sauce but did not come back to the table with it, or check in with us at all, until we were ready for the check. We would be willing to give them one more chance to see if it was just a bad day or if this is the standard. read more

While I haven't really tried anything else on the menu (when I find something I like I stick with it) I love their omelets! The eggs always stick together to stay in the omelet shape and the fillings are always plentiful and cooked well. Favorite and quick breakfast place near home. We love the apple pancake and think it's one of the best in Tacoma. We also never shy away from the bacon avocado omelet. We love the fact you can order at the cash register and pick your own seat at the front of the restaurant, but if you want service you can sit in the back. read more

Shakabrah is hands down my favorite weekend breakfast place. The waitstaff is friendly and prompt, the menu has plenty of variety, and the ambiance is casual and "homelike." The blueberry french toast has just enough sweetness to satisfy and their potatoes are delish. Lots of people seem to favor the veggie-eggy-cheesy skillet items and they look great, just not my speed. Parking can be a chore and there's usually a short wait for a weekend table, but it's well worth it. read more

Has kinda gone downhill in the past couple years. But, my last experience was way better than it's been. The foods always pretty good. Used to have the best french fries, last time I was there they didnt have them anymore. I think it's fairly unsightly that usually there's a an overflowing bustub in the middle of the place. Went here for an informal meeting and it was good, but not great. Parking can be a hassle especially if you need a handicap stall, there is only street parking available. We were there mid morning on a Thursday so there was no wait time for seating and they have a few group tables. The waitress was friendly, attentive and accommodating. The atmosphere was ok, but not anything special. They have some great vegan and gluten free options. The food was a bit in the salty side, although I am sensitive to it. My companions however did also mention the saltiness of the potatoes in particular. Otherwise no major complaints about the food, but no outrageous praise either. All in all the food is good, but forgettable. The coffee was bitter, but drinkable. I was disappointed because it is a breakfast place and I expected better coffee. Prices were reasonable. read more

This is the best breakfast I have ever eaten and that's saying a lot since I'm sort of a breakfast place amateur scout. The potatoes are the perfect texture and seasoned just the right amount. I had the farmer's omelette. Everything about the dish had amazing texture - fluffy eggs, vegetables sauteed in such a way that the crispness was retained. This place is great. Every time I go I get a gigantic pancake ($4.50) and coffee ($2.50) and leave more than satisfied. Service isn't super quick, but they're friendly, and they're great at refilling your coffee cup! My only complaint is that there's no AC..so on a hot day like today it's pretty miserable in there! read more

Shakabrah has the best service that I've experienced in my six months in Tacoma. I loved that my cup never went below half full! The food was fantastic, incredibly filling and tasty. Definitely try the pancakes, they really are huge (still fluffy and delicious - unlike how many others do their huge pancakes). The biscuits and gravy were great and they didn't skimp on the sausage. Over time, this little place has been letting me down. Long waits for tables or food at any time of day is discouraging. 45 minutes to wait for an omelette and biscuits and gravy with open tables in the place is too long. The service is friendly and they will let you know up front that you'll be drinking a lot of coffee at your table while you wait for your food. I try really hard to like this place but every time we come it's a disappointment. They are constantly out of food & key ingredients to make their dishes. Last time it was pancakes this time it was gravy. The food is subpar at best, not good enough to make up for everything else being a bummer. The breakfast is hearty and by hearty I mean 'huge'. Go with an appetite or someone to share your breakfast with. I always enjoy my meal when I go to Shakabrah and on the plus side, I can skip lunch :-). Not only are the portions large, the food is tasty. The coffee? Not so much. It's pretty pedestrian. There are two seating areas. The seating area that you see when you walk in the door is self serve and pretty much 1-2 person tables. If you have a larger party and want a server to take your order and bring your breakfast platter... I mean 'plate', then you need to go into the room to the left. You'll know what I mean when you see it. The atmosphere is very Tacoma. The restaurant is in an old building and the décor is old... but cool. This place is far from pretentious but has a nice homey feel. It can get a bit noisy at times, always when the restaurant is crowded. It's always crowded. Shakabrah is on the same block as a lot of other fun shops (my favorite record store, for example) so you can plan breakfast and then strolling on the ave. It's a great way to spend the morning. Mind you, it isn't west Seattle. The block is shorter and has far fewer cool establishments. But if you live in the area or are visiting, it's worth a stop. read more

Terrible experience. This was our second time visiting Shakabrah, the food was decent enough the first time to warrant a second visit, but we will definitely not be returning a 3rd time. The service was awful, we waited over an hour for our breakfast for two adults and two kids and after being reassured it was about 10minutes out, and still didn't arrive, we left. But not before being accused of stiffing the waitress for our drink bill. If she had bothered to check our table she would have seen that we left a $10 bill for an $8 alcoholic beverage and communicated with another waitress. She also told us that our estimate of our wait was inaccurate except that I had text messages coinciding with our visit that] documented the time frame. Very good biscuits, gravy, and Shaka potatoes!!!Loco moco however, Was not good nor made local style so I don't even know if it's considered a loco moco. The gravy was scarce and not really gravy. A traditional hawaiian loco moco gravy is more like turkey gravy or the gravy you put on mash potatoes, this gravy almost tasted like bbq sauce?? Very odd. No seasoning on the meat either. A great casual place to go and have breakfast. The staff is fantastic, attentive and on point. The pancakes are enormous and enough for three people! The size isn't the selling point though, the cake is chewy and fluffy and has a perfect texture and cooked equally well. We've had the country breakfast, the Chrissy Skillet the Cesar Sandwhich and a few other items and they've all been very good. Their selection of tea is pretty good and seriously, one entree is enough for two people to share. I'd highly recommend the Chrissy Skillet and the biscuits they are a great way to start the day. The only downside was the hot chocolate. It had plenty of hot but not enough chocolate. read more

No one else mentioned the weird level of passive agression from the wait staff. Every time I've eaten here something weird has happened secondary to our waitress being lame. Friends have reported similar incidents happening to them. Having said that, this is the best place for breakfast I've found here, but I should qualify that statement by pointing out that as far as I know, there are NO good breakfast places in Tacoma. read more
