Food and service here were both fantastic! The pancakes were outstanding. They were thinner than most pancakes which gave them an interesting texture and were just outstanding. Fantastic bacon too. Service was impeccable! I was here with a group on a Friday morning, we got there first thing when they opened. All the employees were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and made us feel right at home. Constant refills on solid black coffee and great conversation. One of the best parts of this place is the decor and vibe. Beautiful old architecture, big windows with natural light, and old fashioned furniture and kitchen equipment. It's such a cute little place and feels very home-y. This is a tough one. Five stars for ambiance and service. Loved the staff and the restaurants so cute. But my husband got the fish and chips and it was really awful. In hindsight, we should have sent it back. The batter was totally overcooked and the fish (consequently) was tough and chewy. It desperately needed salt. The French fries were very soggy. This guy LOVES fish and chips and he was so disappointed. My turkey sandwich however, was great. For lovers of Diet Coke, they use an old fashioned soda machine so the soda is extra sweet and not carbonated. I asked about this and the server kindly brought me an iced tea instead. Today we decided to splurge for a super breakfast at The Bair in Steilacoom, a short drive from Tacoma. The owner Sarah once again proved why her restaurant is so great. Her cheerful greeting and then fast service of Hot coffee to start was perfect. I decided to enjoy the Lox salmon and bagel with a side of French toast. I substituted white bread for the bagel. Capers were generous and the spread of dill and cream cheese to die for! The cinnamon French toast with hints of almond or vanilla was superb. My wife had half of a burrito today with the other for tomorrow as it's so huge. There is NO oil or grease on this burrito even after sitting on the plate, unlike so many places where the inside juices and oil slowly drain down. She was accommodated by not having potatoes or bacon in it; the mushrooms, cheese, diced ham and shredded pork were perfectly cooked! Three cups of hot coffee and breakfast by The Bair made my day. If in a hurry, you may want to wait as sometimes busy. However, you will be happy you discovered this secret gem! And then read the history of this restaurant too while waiting. read more

Loved location and overall decor. Great customer service and friendly. We are giving it a three star because of the dirty mug received for hot tea. When we asked for another cup it was dirty as wel with lip stick stains. We ended up getting wipes from our car to clean mug out because we were concerned about asking for another cup and upsetting the staff before receiving our food. read more

Adorable spot about a block up from the waterfront. Used to be the original pharmacy and post office. Used to be a stop along the street car route that is now a street. Fascinating history which is explained on the menu. The restaurant itself is also a museum of sorts, with every item inside having some connection to its prior lives. We ordered the eggs benedict and the avocado toast. The only reason not five stars is that both were somewhat bland. Expected a bigger burst of flavor for both. Fun to have the option of ordering from the soda fountain (after 11 am only). You can sit at the bar or at tables inside or outside. There is free two hour parking up and down the road. Staff was incredible. So friendly and amenable to every circumstance. Would go back just for the staff. read more

To start, The Bair is very cute and quaint. We really enjoyed the aesthetic at The Bair and it felt very homey. We ordered basic breakfasts but they were good. I loved how crispy the bacon was. The one downside and the reason it's not five stars is it took an extremely long time to receive our food. The restaurant didn't seem too busy and based on the fact that we ordered very basic meals, I was not expecting to wait the amount of time we did for the food. We were also only checked on once during our meal, and again, the restaurant is not large so I was a bit surprised by that. All in all, I think we may be back but it is not our first choice for a breakfast spot. read more

This was recently one of the worst brunch experiences I have had in a while. We had a big reservation and told them there were 9-12 of us as we were not sure if the other three were coming. Therefore, I think having 12 chairs would be the default. Nope, they had 8 and we had to keep pestering them for more. The service was incredibly slow, and they were not that busy. Disorganized and trouble getting the dishes all out. The most complicated dish came out first and we are waiting for one person to get an avocado toast so we could all start eating. An avocado toast.... One person at at our table ordered an ice cream sundae and they bring the ice cream sundae instead of the food. Seriously, who the hell manages their kitchen? The ambiance was historic and appealing I ordered the Steilacoom breakfast in a burrito which comes with lox salmon, cream cheese, capers, eggs, cheese, etc. It was bland, tasteless, and had tiny specks of salmon in it. Such a quaint little restaurant tucked in the old Hardware Store located on the Main Street through Steilacoom. The service is exceptional, the menu has a variety of options for breakfast and lunch. Being virtually the only option in town is great competitive advantage for a mediocre place. Nice people and interesting atmosphere but you can't eat the decor. In the world of dining the devil is in the details. Suggestions to up their game: serve jelly and jams packets on the table during breakfast service. Ditto for one or two hot sauces. Review ticket times to make sure they're timely. We know you're not McDonald's but 25+ minutes for breakfast entrees to come out is too long. Average ticket time for made to order sit down breakfast is 8 to 15 minutes. Where's the bottle neck? Food taste is completely subjective but the breakfast potatoes were under seasoned. I know salt and pepper are on the table but they definitely needed help beyond that. Plenty of good recipes you could adapt. The Old Bair Scramble/Omelet could have also benefited from bigger flavors. Plus half melted cheese shreds atop the whole thing not a good look. Makes it seem like the cooks don't care what they are putting out. Good news is most are easily remedied. read more

Came in to get a latte to go (given the sign on the sidewalk) but it was clear that they didn't have a great plan for how to handle both dine-in folks and coffee orders. I ordered a hazelnut latte from someone who was perhaps the most curt barista/cashier I've encountered at a coffee shop (which is saying something), then had to go back to the front to wait for my coffee. Meanwhile, people came in and thought there was a wait, a server was also confused about who was dining in and who wasn't. This is a silly problem to foist upon customers and gives the overall impression that no one has thought about something as simple as the flow of traffic. Meanwhile, I watched a different barista make my drink and have to move around the host who was getting names and party sizes. It was weird and cumbersome and unwelcoming. The barista who made my drink and the host were super nice to me and each other--but the set up left much to be desired. My latte was good but I could taste no hazelnut flavor at all. I contemplated asking for a remake, but considering the confusion inside I just decided to forgo it. I'm not sure if I'll be back or not. The space was very cute inside and the patio looked like a perfect place to have breakfast, but that first cashier/barista seemed entirely annoyed at me, and the lack of clear thought around using the space was just not it. read more

We were ordering 2 mimosas and the person taking the order said that a carafe was $24 so it's cheaper. The carafe is $29, I can deal with a $5 difference and we all flub things up at times. Our food came and smelled great. The Benedict was cold; the omelette piping hot. Again, it happens it was just disappointing. No one stopped by until we were done eating to ask if we needed anything and then left. The person bussing tables came to take our dishes and they graciously went to request our bill. We weren't sure if we go up front to pay and someone else helped us. It was a bit confusing and we weren't sure if it's a group effort or what but we never saw the person we ordered with except to drop the bill. Overall it left a meh for us. Will I come back? The gluten free pancakes were decent for gluten free. The gf bread in the eggs Benedict was good, and the eggs were cooked perfectly with runny yolks! There wasn't much GF hollandaise on my florentine eggs Benedict, but I asked for more and they gave me a bunch for free! The glutinous challah French toast was good, thick and fluffy, but not eggy in the middle. Some people prefer it soaked longer, like me. What an amazing find on a Sunday morning after walking nearby at Chambers Bay. Absolutely loved the charm of this place the moment I walked into the restaurant. The vintage vibe and smell of wonderful food, combined with friendly faces was a great start. We were seated fairly quickly and impressed to see that most food is made fresh and in house from scratch. The food did not disappoint at all! The corned beef, one of my favorites to order when eating out was real, not no canned greasy mess. Tip, add the country sausage gravy to it, best I've ever had! Our meals came w deliciously seasoned potatoes too. The interior design is similar to how the building must have been when it was still a drug and hardware store -- which we admired. It has a special, historic feel to it. We went on a Saturday, so it was pretty busy. Visitors seem to feel comfortable enough to converse for a while after their meals, which points to a really positive environment! Ordered a turkey sandwich and the server explained they "ran out of cranberry and use a mixture of Jelly" and assured me it would be great. It's as gross as it sounds. I am not one to send food back, but I've never tasted something so terrible! It was like a Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich but without PB and sub it out for turkey! It was awful! The salad with it was 99% lettuce, not much to tell about the tomatoes or cucumbers as they were 4 bite-sized. Hubby loved his Ruben Sandwich, and the fries were homemade. Not fast food, but solid recipes and plenty of history on the menu, on the walls, and at the surrounding tables. Did you know they have a real, functional, soda fountain? I'd seen reviews over the years, especially raving about the breakfasts, I was not there in time for breakie on this week day, but had a very nice lunch on one of the last sunny days before the monsoons start. A well made grilled cheese (yes, I know, I am dull and boring). Some days basic food for the soul hits the spot. The sandwich was grilled just right and a large order of hand cut fries rounded out the meal. The service was friendly and prompt. The ambiance was something else! A 124 year old former phramacy is now a nice cafe with a large menu. It's a history tour of 1895 Steilacoom while you are enjoying your meal.
