Also, the ingredient they use; most people initially would be like "damn look at the price tag though"; but when you take a bite into it (i.e. their croissant, and other baked bread), you will nod to yourself on the inside and goes "ok, i kinda see why now" Now, don't get me started on their cake creation; you think you knew Asian bakery until you tried their goods. Cakes here are more on the less sweet side, which is fine for the cheesecake, but feel like the egg tart needs a bit more sugar. Cheesecake is pretty good; it's pretty interesting with the purple rice. I don't really like the crust of egg tart. The strawberry pork floss is weird, in a negative way imo. The strawberry tastes like strawberry milk in vn (not sure here cuz I never drink strawberry milk ever again lol) and that flavor just doesn't go with the pork floss. read more

Great new bakery that just opened today! I went later on in the day so many shelves were empty compared to the morning but whatever they had left tasted so good! I'm a fan of their baked breads and pastries. I was pleasantly surprised when I bit into the green Sichuan pepper cheese chicken as well as the Japanese crab bread. Nice savory elements inside delicate clouds of bread. The fruit pastries were light with fresh fruit, airy custard filling and flaky crust. I also got an almond croissant which was good, but I prefer ones with an inside filling like at Breads Bakery. These croissants are beautifully made though. They also sell cream puffs at 4 for $6.99. Unfortunately they don't sell it individually (at this time, maybe ever) so I didn't get any because most of the flavors sold out. Flavors include: matcha, strawberry, mango, blueberry and cookie butter/Speculoos. Everyone was in line to buy cakes which looked amazing! One person bought a large cake and it was packaged so pretty in a see-through plastic container with black and gold ribbon. Prices are higher than other bakeries around Flushing. However, Shakalaka has some creative items and flavors that aren't easy to find, so I will be back to try more. read more

I bought the blueberry cake and Thai tea cake to a 6-person party. Two mini cakes together are enough to share, but it's not easy to cut mini cakes without them falling. Although the cake is spongy, it's a bit dry, the texture is odd comparing to the chiffon cake I make at home. I am not a fan of the cream/buttercream texture either. One of my favorite Chinese modern bakeries in downtown Flushing. They have a variety of in-house new-school pastries and cakes. It feels clean and bright inside with indoor seating in the back. The service is friendly and fast as well. I like their interesting selection of pastries, kind of like a Korean bakery with innovative desserts and pastries. Their basque burnt cheesecake cakes are definitely worth it for an event and comes in several flavors including matcha and oreo. They even have a mini Thai tea cake! Relatively new bakery to open up along Main St with a more elevated vibe (and price tag) than your typical Asian bakery. The interior is warm with light wooden accents and feels spacious for being on such a small lot. They were well known for their ""lunchbox/bento box"" cakes that were all the craze a few months back and they do look adorable in the display. I've bought one of the larger cakes with taro filling for someone's birthday once and it got the ultimate compliment of ""not too sweet."" The cake was spongy and airy, while the cream was a smooth silky texture. The taro paste filling was the standout, and had us going back for bite after bite. I came back today to try the pastries out front and was disappointed. Got two croissants (mango cream and black sesame cream), both of which looked great, until I cut into them. For some reason, the croissants were cut length-wise and there was just a smidgen of cream in the center. It unfortunately made the inside of the croissants have a soggy-ish texture. While the outside layers were still really flaky, it got pretty doughy and chewy once you bite into the whole thing which was pretty unpleasant. The cream was also a let-down. It may have just been a bad batch, but it was definitely overwhipped and resulted in tiny clumpy bits that ruined the texture. For the price, I expected better quality/consistency in the baked goods. read more

Strawberry pork floss - very interesting. First time trying a pork floss pastry. This was on a sponge castella cake with strawberry flavored pork floss. When you first eat it it tastes like eating a strawberry sponge cake. But towards the end, you can taste the pork floss and it gets alittle bit chewy. Lacks flavor and doesn't go well together The other two items have no flavor whatsoever. Also got the Thai iced tea cake - this sponge cake base was good but can barely taste the Thai tea flavor. Service was strange - the workers do know English but dismissive in terms of explaining what each pastry was Ambiance is not bad. Relatively clean. Has seating inside. Pork floss is delicious. A pork floss cake is interesting. A strawberry pork floss cake is intriguing af. After coming across various photos and videos, I knew I had to try it. Lookswise, the strawberry floss cake is reminiscent of the good humor strawberry shortcake ice cream bars. There are small pieces of strawberries intermixed with the floss covering the cake, giving a nice contrast of sweet and salty with every bite. The texture difference between the two also makes for a good mouthfeel. On the other hand, the thai tea cake was a bit of a disappointment. It was lacking the oomph that thai tea drinks have. I wish that the flavor of the thai tea was stronger; it was way too subtle. In between the sponge cake layers were strawberries, keeping it refreshing and preventing the cream from being too cloying. Both cakes were light and not too sweet. If you're looking to get the 4inch mini cakes, especially the more popular ones, I recommend going early. Only two strawberry floss and thai tea cakes were available as of 11:30AM on a Friday. The cashier was friendly and accommodating. She double checked to see if the cakes were correct and was able to switch out one that wasn't. Despite there being many customers and a full house, everything was neat and clean. read more

The flavors of the baked savory and sweet items seem to have Chinese, Japanese, and Korean influences. We came in for the egg tarts but they were sold out by 3pm on a Sunday. We'll have to come back. We got a collection of croissants (matcha, black sesame cream, and chocolate), and three tarts. The croissants were devoured quickly - sorry no pictures. Light, fluffy, and fresh, the sesame cream was like whipped cream with black sesame flecks, surprisingly good. The matcha croissant was lightly dusted with the green tea powder and was filled with matcha cream. I give this the ultimate Chinese compliment of "not too sweet." The chocolate croissants had bars of okay chocolate baked in but it's not fluffy or airy - more dense. The tarts were mostly layers of croissant bread in tart form with a small dollop of pudding and different fruit toppings. They were tasty but mostly buttery crust. The price is more expensive than other local Flushing bakeries, but the goods are unique. We'll be back for the egg tarts and to try the savory breads. read more

Great new bakery that opened up on Roosevelt Avenue near the 7 train! I picked up 4 different breads on my first visit. The Sichuan Green Pepper Cheese Bread ($3.59), whole Wheat Garlic Cheese Bread ($2.89), Japanese Crab Meat Bread ($2.59), and Tuna Cheese Bread ($2.89). I really love cheese OK? All of them tasted fresh and unique. My favorite was the Japanese Crab Meat Bread. The crabmeat is juicy, with the right amount of sauce. There's some lettuce underneath the crabmeat, which adds a nice crunch, and some shredded seaweed on top. The bakery also has a wide selection of cream puffs, croissants, cakes, and other pastries.
