I've heard about Shake Shack for years, so when I learned one was opening in Birmingham, I was excited to see what all the hype was about. We stopped in around 8 for dinner the day after opening day. Upon entry there was a choice to go to the line serviced by people or place our order through self service at one of the three kiosks. We opted to place our order with a person, particularly because we needed a bit of time to look at the menu. After we placed our order we were given a pager that buzzed when our order was ready. The place was packed (remember it just opened yesterday), but we lucked up and immediately found a table for two. Now for the food. I ordered the Shack Burger, single. The bun was soft, burger nicely seasoned, and cheese perfectly melted. It came with lettuce and a special sauce. I opted for no tomatoes. If you're a Bham local, the size and consistency of the burger reminded me of Jack Brown's. I appreciated the burger to bun ratio and the fact the burger wasn't too greasy. I'm usually not a fan of crinkle cut fries, but they were a nice consistency and made for a nice compliment to the burger. I also ordered the seasonal lemonade, watermelon basil. It was delicious, very fresh and not too sweet. Although I didn't have room for dessert, after spying our neighbors' ice cream selections, I would definitely return. I think there's a Birmingraham concrete with my name on it. I was uber impressed by the service. Everyone with whom we interacted was friendly and efficient. Several people visited our table and the manager checked on us a few times. They appeared to be very concerned about our satisfaction. It's a step up from the traditional burger and fry spots, but you definitely pay a little more for the trendy culture. This place was great for a quick bite. We were there on Sunday about 1pm and it was crowded but the lines move fast and they have a kiosk to order so you don't really need to wait in line. I got the shroom burger and it was crunchy and yummy. My hubby got the smoke shack burger which was almost perfect. The only disappointment was the "concrete" we ordered called the shack attack. If something is labeled concrete then you would expect it to be stiff custard like concrete, right? This was a loose runny shake in a bowl. It had great taste but not what we were looking for. I had very high expectations for this place and it was pretty solid. The restaurant has a great set up, the architect knew what he was doing. What is great is the counter to order is right when you walk in, so when it is crowded the line goes outside instead of through the restaurant. This place does get very crowded. They also have computers to order your food which worked really well. They have a decent amount of seating but not enough for how many people come here. The food did not take long, they were very efficient. The burger was very good and so were the fries. It was not super pricey either. If you are at the Summit and looking for a good burger I would definitely recommend here. read more

Finally the Grand opening! And it was great! It's in the summit and in a prime location. They handed out samples of the vanilla custard and I absolutely loved it so obviously I ordered that and I ordered their lemonade. We got cheese fries for being in the first 205 people there today and which was nice. The custard which was basically ice cream was so so so good and I would definitely go back. The lemonade was good. The cheese fries were cold but to no fault of their own. It was still good. A lot of people could sit in the restaurant and outside of it. Their staff was excellent. Shake Shack had an appropriately long line for the opening day. They had a shuttle running from another area in the Summit, which was a plus. The entire order took about an hour from ordering to receiving the food. I ordered the double shack burger, Cheese fries, and a Shark attack custard. The food was not as great As I was expecting, but by no means was it bad. The hype surpassed the taste and it was a bit pricey for the environment. There was limited space inside so people were pouring onto the grass to eat. However, this is most likely due to the initial opening. It was not as gourmet as I expected, so I have mixed feelings. We stopped in Sunday for a quick dinner and to our surprise it was still packed! The people were friendly and got us in pretty quick. The menu is not over crowded with stuff. It is simple and easy to read. You actually order as you walk in and and you pick up your food at the back of the restaurant. Our order didn't take long and it was accurate. We ordered the double with the ranch bacon, the single bacon and the bacon mushroom stuffed with cheese. The mushroom burger was the best out of all of them. They take a mushroom cap and stuff it with cheese and then bread it and deep fry it until it's golden. It is amazing! The fries are your average crinkle cuts. For the style of burger you are paying for, the fries don't match the burger. Hand cut will be the way to go. The shakes were ok and need some work. They were very soft and tasted like they had been sitting up waiting on the food. The burger gets 4 stars but everything else is 2 stars. I spent $55 for three people. read more

This is an awesome addition to the Summit. I live in New York so I'm already a regular Shake Shack visitor and knew what to expect, but I got to take my mom for the first time and brought my brother a burger and fries to try for the first time as well. Yes, I've hyped the place up, but they loved it and, of course, I did too. The burgers are so so good. While they are a little small, the quality of the burger and the FLAVORS (omg) are what really makes it amazing. The cheese fries are awesome too. My brother had his fries an hour after we got them and he still raves about how good they were... Y'all know that's saying a lot. The prices are steep, but so worth it for the quality of the ingredients and food you're getting. The brand is amazing and does awesome things (regularly gives back to good causes and nonprofits), and... I'm now craving a burger as I type this. Definitely grab a shake while you're at it, too. They have your regular vanilla, chocolate, etc., but also do seasonals, like a Christmas cookie one right now. I've found the burgers & fries to be consistently wonderful. The milkshake flavors are sometimes a miss in my opinion, but that's personal preference. Service is usually quick & I generally find that the restaurant is clean. Sometimes their app has been lame in the past. Not sure if it's been updated it to be better because I deleted it after the last time placed an order, was charged for it, had it cancelled without being notified & wasn't refunded until I requested it. First time at Shake Shack you place your own order at the multiple screens then you pick up when your name is called. I think the prices are a little high though I think the hype is more from the name it was just normal burger and fries honestly. The restaurant decor, outside patio and the staff were really nice. After our first bite, we were very disappointed. The shack burger is just like any fast food burger. It was very small and just underwhelming in general. The 'Shroom burger was not what we were expecting. It consists of a mushroom formed into a fried patty with cheese in the middle. The fries were okay, but not worth it for the price. While we did not enjoy the burgers, we really liked the shake. It was creamy and just the right consistency. Overall, I would not go back to Shake Shack. Honestly did not know shake shack had hotdogs until one of my friends told me... i honestly did not know what to expect especially because shake shack is a known burger place but apparently before they blowed up they were known for their hotdogs! controversial opinion: i genuinely like hotdogs like sometimes they just hit different LOL! I love this place, it's in The Summit which always means I can hop in here after going on a shopping spree and get a quick bite. I'm not one for restaurants unless I'm with a larger group of friends so I love how convenient this place is while at the same time having really good food and customer service. Everyone here is super friendly and knowledgeable about the food. Ordering is fast and they have kiosks in case you really don't know what you want and want a less intimidating option. I love that they offer a lot of different options based on if you are vegetarian or have other dietary restrictions. I tried the mushroom burger and loved it. This restaurant is inconsistent and now they have have introduced tipping! Tipping on what? I order a meal on the computer in the store. I go to the counter to retrieve the meal. I get the napkins and the ketchup. What exactly am I being asked to tip on? The reality is that instead of pay their workers a decent wage they expect me to subsidize their poor wages on no service. I've been sad for awhile since my beloved Sugarboo closed. It was my favorite. Anyway, Shake Shack took over residence where Sugarboo used to be and so we have been waiting for it to open since my son loves burgers & shakes. I don't know how we missed their grand opening. I was calling the operator at The Summit every few days at the beginning of August with the same redundant question. "Hello, do you know when Shake Shack will open?" Every time the answer was "soon" or "we still don't know, sorry...." I realized this week I should've been following them on Instagram because that's where they announced it. Sigh..... we missed the fun that comes with grand openings. The free custard samples, the shuttle ride and promises of free Steel City Pops if you take the shuttle. Oh well, that's ok. My son and I watched a bunch of reviews on YouTube and already knew what we wanted to order. We decided to go last night (Tuesday) at 7:00. We drove up and as we looked over at Shake Shack, there were people everywhere. It reminded me of driving around a college campus. There were people in groups sitting on the grass. People standing in groups just hanging out. I liked the community vibe of the place. It really has a cult following. When we walked inside, there were a few people waiting. There are a few kiosk options to order & pay ahead which is great! We were paying cash, so we didn't use the kiosk. We ordered the hamburger with pickle, lettuce, tomato & onion, a smokestack burger which has diced cherry peppers & bacon, a cheeseburger & the crinkle fries with cheese. The burgers are not huge. I personally love that, though because I don't want a ton of food. I love the char on the meat, very good! My son kept saying kind of loud "This is amazing!!!" I don't know if he just needs to get out more since we started homeschooling or if he really loves the burger that much. I really wanted to try the concrete for dessert. The concrete is custard with mix ins. I ordered one & shared it with my husband. We got the "Pie Oh My" that has peach pie in vanilla custard. It was awesome!!!! I would go back just to get that!! I also love how they have one called The "Birming Graham" that has lemon curd & graham cracker crust reminiscent of Lemon Pie. I think each city has a special one in its honor which is cool. I tried the regular chicken sandwich and it was even better the 2nd time around. Hot, juicy, crispy and tasty. The mayo sauce adds an extra flare for the taste buds. The crinkle fries are not ordinary. There is something extra about the taste which also has the perfect crisp. I had the flavored berry tea which was just the right amount of sweetness. I eat here frequently because of how close it is to my second job at the summit. I'm usually never disappointed. The restaurant is always clean as are the bathrooms. The food is never cold and usually (with the exception of one time) has been pretty fast. I recommend the smoke shack burger. It has a delicious sauce, peppers, lettuce, tomato, and cheese. I usually get mine on a lettuce bun to save a few calories but I love love love their potato buns. The fries are bomb. I love to get them covered with cheese . The one thing I would not recommend getting is their chicken bites. They are extra greasy and the breading kind of falls off. They make my stomach turn actually. My first couple of visits to shake shack were not the best. It was either the food or the service but, in their defense they had just opened. Revisited today and our overall experience was much better. As a vegetarian I ordered the shroom burger which is really good. I added tomatoes, onions, lettuce and pickles to my burger. I also like to put hot sauce on it. The shroom burger Is a breaded deep fried mushroom stuffed with cheese so it is on the heavier side but it tastes really good. Today their fries were also tasty. Very, very, disappointing. I have been wanting to go to shake shack for weeks and have been talking about it to my colleges wanting a new option for a great burger and fries! So, tonight I ordered from the online APP with no complications at all....until I walked into the doors. Walking in, I was directed to the "pick up" counter, walk up and a lady employee was standing there, who clearly saw me standing waiting for my order simply turns her face and walks away...obviously thinking this is very rude, I wait for the next employee to acknowledge me. A younger gentleman employee with glasses finally says hello, asked me for the name of my order and handed me my burger and fries, then the young man shouted to the people in the back " get her milkshake out of the fridge" I then was handed my coffee milkshake , and it was watery...as it should be, considering it's been sitting in a refrigerator for 20 minutes. I then asked the employee if It would be possible to get another shake , because this ones watered down, he then looks at me, takes off the lid and said "no it's not" ...now surprised at his reaction. I said yes it is, is it okay if I can have another that is not watered down? He then goes into a rant of " our milkshakes are made with blah blah blah and they are made not to get watered down" ...I honestly didn't understand what he was talking about and AGAIN asked , may I please just have another one that is not watered down? Clearly at this point he is not happy with me, and says "We don't REmake milkshakes, your costing us extra money you know that?" Then takes the shake, and proceeds to loudly announce to the other employees what has happened. By this point the other customers are standing in line behind me shaking there heads in disbelief, as am I. He comes back several minutes later , then does the most disrespectful act thus far, He takes the "new" shake (which I'm sure was the same watered down one) and slides it across the counter , almost falling off and walks away. I leave in disbelief and almost laughing at how awful this young man just acted. Let's just say I will never be returning to Shake Shack, and management should sit down with this employee and have him re read the customer service training Manuel. Awful! read more

My second time ever at a SS. First experience was in ATL a few years ago. Figured I should give them another try on my way down to Montgomery. First off, bad location IMO. This is located at an outdoor shopping center. Horrible parking situation (Saturday crowd. Stayed patient for just a burger!). But I did get lucky and found a decent spot eventually. Besides that, same taste as my previous experience. The price is still the same too. Good tasting, but overpriced. Same goes for the milkshake. Food was done in like 5 minutes. Tried this for the first time last Sunday with a friend. Very satisfied with my experience. Fast service, and delicious food! The fries were crinkle fries, and I was expecting them to be soggy like jacks fries, but no, they were DELICIOUS Perfectly crispy. The burger was a tad on the small side, but I LOVE small/skinny burgers! Just enough to fill you up, but not over-fill you. The meal with fries, drink, and a cheese burger was about $12, and worth every penny in my opinion. I will be back!! read more
