However, a friend offered to get us take-out at the newly opened Harvard Square location on Sunday evening, so I was up for that. No wait, per my friend, and my single patty ShackBurger (cheeseburger) $4.85 and cheese fries $3.85 (as a take-out the cheese came on the side) arrived still warm. Good burger, but nothing special. The fries were thin cut, skin on, somewhat crisp, but way over salted, tamed by the cheese sauce. Plenty to share between the two of us. Sampled my friend's black & white shake $5 - thick and tasty; more dessert than drink. But if they aren't going to have malt in stock as a rule, they really ought to remove the 50 cents malted option off the menu instead of teasing us. After much awaiting and fanfare, Shake Shack finally opened in Harvard Square. As everyone knows, what Harvard Square *really needs* is another burger joint. As residents eagerly counted down the days before Shake Shack opened, we could only console ourselves by buying burgers at b.good, Flat Patties, Tasty Burger, and Bartley's, all within a square-half-mile. This Shake Shack is located in the Staples shopping center near the new Yogurtland, and occupies two floors. For the past few months, the place has been absolutely packed - lines out the door, and seating is pretty much impossible to find. If you do manage to snag a table, be prepared to guard it with your life - it's not uncommon to have people breathing down your neck waiting for you to leave as soon as you hit maybe halfway through your burger. In terms of food, it's pretty much like any Shake Shack around. Their Smoke Stack is pretty good, with bacon and roasted red bell peppers melding together with a spicy kick. They have a huge selection of shakes and soft serves with mix ins. This Shake Shack also sells beer and wine. The service might be a bit lacking - the kitchen is always bustling but the cashiers look like they want to just fall on the ground and start sleeping. My trip to shake shack was fine. The food was solid, but nothing that has me excited to return. Pros: I had Shake Shack for the first time years ago in New York. I loved it and since then it has always held a special place in my food heart. As the chain has expanded it's nice to be able to access it more easily and the one Harvard Square is perfect located. The menu is standard Shake Shack--burgers, fries, and shakes. The food is ok and will definitely fill you up. I think the best part was the chocolate shake, which my husband really enjoyed. Service was also pretty fast. Cons: The food was just ok. It wasn't nearly as good as I remember it--the special sauce wasn't great and the burger itself basically seemed like any other fast food burger on a slightly better bun. The fries were also fine, but I hate to say I would've chosen McDonalds in a taste test. I also spent between $20 and $25 on food for two people, which just felt like a huge waste for the quality of the food. I'll start with the positives: my burger tasted good. MY fries were fine. I was able to sit down somewhere. Now, the reasons why the rating is so low: 1. I arrived to this Shake Shack at 8:00 and did not receive my food until 8:40. The place was not busy at all, almost all tables were open. 2. My friend's truffle fries came cold (45 minutes after she ordered). Upon bringing this up to the staff, they explained that it was cold because "oh well they've been ready for 25 minutes but we didn't make your burger until 5 minutes ago." 3. Upon requesting new fries, she was given complimentary fries... thank god.... However, they were more COLD fries. AND not even truffle fries but regular fries. 4. There was no apology given, no explanation, no offer to make up for the 40 minute wait at this FAST-FOOD restaurant. 5. My friend's grilled cheese took 45 minutes as well, and they only gave her half of the serving size-- half of a hamburger bun. It seems like you can not shake a stick lately and not hit a new burger joint - Thankfully our "stick" took us here. Besides the seating which can be a nightmare, there is not much I do not like about this place. The burgers are consistently well done to our specific needs and the fries are the way we like them (crisp outside, not to crisp inside). The shakes also are well done but that should be a given. The hype for East Coast's Shake Shack as the competitor to West Coast's In-N-Out is honestly not even a fair battle at all. I was super excited to try the burgers here since everyone hypes them as the burger that ties In-N-Out's burger in price, taste, and quality, but it was just okay, if not subpar. I ordered the single Shackburger with a side of fries. I'd say that In-N-Out's sauce and fries are much better than Shake Shack's, whereas the rest of it is pretty similar. This is often described as the "In N' Out of the East Coast" and being from the West Coast I had to give it a shot when I first came here. They have several different types of burgers and the meat quality is pretty decent. They do not have any combo meals so you must purchase everything separately. I went with the original ShackBurger which is a cheeseburger. I added BBQ sauce in it for extra flavor. The burger came out smaller than I expected it, and the meat was pretty thin. As somebody who is never able to finish a burger, I ate this pretty quickly. I also got a side of cheese fries and a drink. The cheese fries were pretty good, but the drink was really small. I had to refill it 3 times ! This was a bit of a hassle because I was seated up stairs making me walk down 3 different times for a refill was exhausting ! The price was pretty high for a fast food chain. For 2 basic cheeseburgers, one cheese fry, and 2 small drinks I paid just over $30. To me, this is priced like a restaurant style burger, which this isn't even close in quality to justify that pricing. On a different visit here I also tried the Oreo shake which was pretty delicious, but a little pricey for the size. The ambiance is casual and it is located in a great spot in Harvard Square. Sitting upstairs you can eat a nice view of the area. The service was horrible. Although the cashier was nice, it was impossible to get somebody to help me for my refills! I waited about 5 minutes each time for help. People would be there and look at me then walk away while I was asking for help! This happened every time with different people. There were even 2 cooks that were just crossing their arms and staring into outer space who could have easily helped me! Overall, it ain't bad it's worth the experience but after that... go elsewhere! Definitely isn't even close to In N' Out! So I visited a Shake Shack in NYC and I think I may have just had a bad experience or went to the wrong location. The location in Harvard Square changed my feeling about Shake Shack and I will be returning soon. This location also serves beer and wine much like their competitor Tasty Burger down the road. While I did not try them I was surprised and happy to see that this location does not serve their traditional crinkle fries that are served at other locations. I hate crinkle fries as they remind me of the fries that were served during grammar school lunch. Shack Stack - The burger and fried mushroom combo here is exquisite. Got DoorDash from them and was missing an item for my daughter (her burger). Called the DoorDash driver who said I needed to call the restaurant which I did. I pressed 2 to speak to a manager. He told me to go through DoorDash and "deal with it". I promptly called the customer service line for DoorDash who said it was the restaurants responsibility. I can't believe I am writing this review... I am a traitor. I am a big fan of In n Out because I am from Los Angeles, but I have to say...the burgers at Shake Shack taste more flavorful than In n Out! I had a conversation with some friends the other day and found out that the quality of the beef from Shake Shack is better than in n out, so I had to come here to find out for myself. I have always wanted to try Shake Shack when I visited New York, but there are so many restaurants in NY that I wanted to try so I never had a chance to go. Now that Shake Shack is in Boston, I finally have the opportunity to eat here. There is definitely a difference in the taste of the beef that they use compared to other burger joints. Shake Shack uses 100% angus beef and the beef tastes very buttery and it was seasoned perfectly. I got the shack burger and I have to say it is pretty healthy in my book so I felt less guilty about eating fast food. It comes with lettuce, tomato, cheese, shack sauce. After I finished it, I wanted to get another one. I seriously think I can eat 5 of them! They recently went from serving frozen crinkle cut fries to fresh cut fries. I never liked crinkle cut fries because I think it gets too starchy. I am glad they decided to use fresh cut fries instead! I think the fries at in n out are slightly better because it isn't fried to golden brown like the ones at Shake Shack. Hence, I thought the fries were a little too over-fried. But it depends on your preference. The fries were crispy and good though for the most part. You can even add malt vinegar to the fries. I've also tried their fair shake, which is a coffee shake. I have to say it is pretty filling. I felt pretty full after drinking that. It is almost a meal itself. Then I found out that the shake is 650 calories! Yikes! Also, there is one more factor that I consider when I eat fast food, which is food coma induction. Shake Shack's food coma induction factor is 7/10, which is not too bad. I felt tired right after eating it and had a 30-minute-post-food-coma! I will definitely frequent this place more now that it is in Cambridge! read more

I've definitely experienced better. There is some hype around this place, and it seemed like it had burgers that were pretty great, but I was unfortunately disappointed. This place is better than McD's, but not by much. Bread was eh, vegetables were eh, shack sauce was barely noticeable. Meat was terrible, it started falling apart, and the bottom was severely undercooked. Fries were great. I was highly surprised they'd be so good for crinkle cut. They were just the right crispness and seasoned perfectly, ketchup is not needed. Draught Root Beer was great too. Slightly better than from the fountain or bottled. If you are craving a burger, go to Tasty Burger across the street, or find almost any other burger place in Harvard Square. Unless you are just craving fries. Well, I am a tourist, so allow me to express my amazement at Shake Shack, and especially this location. No lines, right in the middle of lunch hour! To be clear, I'm a huge fan of Shake Shack in general. The single Shackburgers are the perfect size for me, and the caramelization on the patties is so satisfying. The potato rolls are always fresh and fluffy, almost like a bao. And even though they remind me of the dining hall, I can't resist the krinkle fries every now and then. However, my most recent trip to this location left me disappointed. They seemed pretty understaffed for a Saturday night, and it showed in the quality of the food. There was so much Shack sauce on my burger that I could squeeze out over 2 tablespoons while still leaving a decent amount on the burger. Also, I tried a caramel pretzel concrete (flavor of the week), but it just tasted like vanilla custard. There were a few crunchy bits, but I couldn't tell if they were ice crystals or pretzels. This Shake Shack is fine, a tad overpriced given the neighborhood unless you take advantage of the student discount (which is on hold when they offer other specials). Free wifi and the upstairs is a good place to study. The food is more or less so-so depending on the line cook of the minute, and personally, I'd skip eating 3 of these burgers for a really good gourmet burger for my money instead. Still, it's a decent spot to grub if you're in the neighborhood. I've been here twice since they opened. I was in Harvard square with friends and I had a coupon from an event I went to so came here to use it. The cashier had no idea what that coupon was and no idea how to ring it up. Needless to stay I was in line for awhile and felt extremely uncomfortable and bad that others had to wait to order. It's Harvard Sq so it was very busy as well. The order took awhile before it was ready. It was very hard trying to find a seat there. We got lucky while we waited and someone left. I ordered the shack burger and also a concert with lobster tail pastry. I've had this before and new it was delicious. I made it a double!! So I could share. Yum! The burger wasn't so great. It was a little too greasy. The lettuce and tomato was fresh though. We also ordered cheese fries and that was also very good too. Clearly, clearly, a special place. We are so lucky to have one and to be getting more. If you've never had a ShakeShack Burger, either single or double, ordered as is with no special requests, you might not understand. But if you have, you will comprehend the indelible impression biting into one of these masterpieces leaves on the cerebral cortex. Dripping cheese running through meat. Beef. Seasoned with salt and pepper. Lots of beef - almost steak like flavor and loaded with juice. Slightly charred exterior. Fresh tomato and lettuce complement the shack sauce (a variation on Russian dressing). Medium rare!! In a potato bun that holds it all together so well that the wax paper bag is barely necessary. The double shack burger is really the way to go - two patties with two slices of cheese. If it's too much meat, don't eat the whole thing but it will be worth it flavor wise. The explosion and mixing of flavors is hard to forget and impossible to replicate. The new hand cut fries with cheese were forgettable - salted well but wilted. Order an extra burger. Or a shake. Vanilla, chocolate, black and white? I prefer vanilla with my burgers. A truly thick and rich shake made with custard. As good as any Shake Shack's in NYC or elsewhere. Beer and wine available. Another location in the greater Boston area! Yay! 2014 is looking like a burger year for Boston. Came here early evening and during a time where students aren't quite all back yet from break. No lines! But I'm sure as soon as the tourist season comes around and it warms up you'll see lines out the door. I won't rate the burgers too much because you can read those in a million other reviews and websites. Burger: seems a little under par, maybe they're still getting the hang of things. I fully trust they'll improve to the Shake Shack we all expect. Location: Great location. Had to try the "East Coast" version of In-N-Out having just moved to Boston from California. First off, these 2 shouldn't be compared. Both are great in their own right and are definitely NOT the same. With that being said, I ordered the portobello mushroom burger (recent vegetarian and was SO glad to see an option I could eat). The "burger" was actually really good - it had substance to it and didn't leave me starving like most vegetarian burgers do. My favorite thing about Shake Shack though (besides their shakes) are their crinkle fries. Shake shack easily has one of the best fast food burgers around. The patties are greasy goodness, and very tender. The shack sauce is a good rendition on the big mac sauce. The regular shack burger had nice fresh lettuce and tomato and I did the double patties because 2 is always better than one. The patties are small so I recommend getting 2 for a meal, 1 for a snack. The fries are good enough to have, but won't keep you coming back. They have cups and a water tap available on the first and second floor, and they serve beer, the best of both worlds.
