Nowhere does crowdsourcing work best than on Yelp. On the advice of precisely one previous review, my friends and I ended our hunt for a cheap and good Indian restaurant in London. Certainly the restaurants on Brick Lane with their 100+ and extensive rankings in online article compilations were tempting! But there's nothing like discovering a hidden gem in the heart of the Whitechapel area.
Shalamar is not fancy. It is not even nice, honestly. The interior is appalling, an intense, pasty white lit up by overhead fluorescents. When we entered, there was no one else in the place besides the cooks. But the value is unreal - veggie samosas are .60£ each, pretty much every curry, veggie or meat, is 3£ except I think for the paneer, and the naans are 1-2.5£ each. Is the food good? Yes! For our main dishes, I ordered the Chana masala, one friend the mixed vegetable curry, and my other friend the dal. All the curries were delicious and the portion size was, well, the whole plate. We liked the dal best, really deeply spiced, and found the mixed vegetable a little one dimensional (also spicier than anticipated). The masala was standard but again, the spicing was really good. We also had vegetable samosas, which had a good potato and peas mix inside, but the exterior lacked a little bit - it was very flat and mostly greasy, tasting like a fried donut on its second day. But again, the samosas were absurdly cheap and filling, perfect after a long day of walking in the London fog. The parantha was puffy and simple, the garlic naan oily but well baked.
Don't feel obligated to go to Brick Lane - if you're budget traveling like us but still want some truly authentic Indian food (and are in the area), Shalamar is your place. read more
