Every time I've been here, the ladies at Shalom Bakery provide the greatest customer service. Every cookie, brownie, challah is traditional, made with love, geschmacht/delish! We had hotel boxes awaiting our out of town guests for my daughter's bat mitzvah. I realized a few days beforehand that our orthodox cousins wouldn't be able to eat most of what was in the box. I wasn't sure where to get kosher baked goods, but a few friends recommended Shalom Kosher Bakery. I called ahead and placed an order for 2 mini challahs and they said they had plenty of cookies to choose from. While I was super busy the days leading up to the bat mitzvah my nanny was able to pick up the challah, which they had waiting for her. She also chose a box of cookies and based on the pics she sent me there were many options. Both the challah and cookies received rave reviews and I'm thrilled to know where to go for kosher baked goods in the future. That being said based on the Yelp reviews I'm eager to try their baked goods even though I don't keep kosher. read more

Great Products and mainstay of the community. Older person, owner, was very rude to me. I was buying my products and considering more and she said, "come on, we have a lot of customers and I have to move on." Despite the sweet smells and lovely products I thought this was very hurtful and harsh. She had been friendly to all the people in line until my turn. We have some nut allergies in my house that are so severe, neither of my daughters have ever stepped foot inside a bakery. That was, until Shalom changed all that. Located in Buffalo Grove, it was a haul from the city. For my daughter's 9th bday, I surprised her by bringing her here and letting her pick out whatever she wanted. We went a little crazy, but I'm so grateful we did because everything was phenomenal. Like not just good, spectacular. The chocolate coffee cake was big and I thought, there's no way we'll finish that. I was wrong. The Rugela was buttery and flaky. Perfection. The sprinkle cookies were so nostalgic of my childhood growing up in West Rogers Park with the Jewish bakeries galore. They just don't have enough places like this around anymore and to be nut and dairy free on top of that is just icing on the cake (excuse the pun). The owners were so kind and sweet to my daughters, even giving them each a free smiley face cookie. In terms of Covid protocol, they have it down to a science. No one enters the store. Everything is displayed on a table at the entrance. People were socially distanced and there was hand sanitizer on both sides of the table. I just can't rave enough about my new find. We will most definitely be back! The only bummer is they close at noon and I'm not much of a morning person, but I'll get up and moving early enough if it means chocolate coffee cake is waiting for me! read more

We go for the Cookies, which are very tasty for this area. Jarosch are melt in your mouth but these are my second favorites.

My husband is always on the look out for a good bagel in the area so we decided to check this place out. Right now (during COVID) you can't really go in the store, it is one in and one out, with all the goods pre-packaged. They had a lot of options to choose from, but it didn't quite seem like they had their full menu available when we were there. While there I grabbed a pack of mish-mosh (everything) bagels and two chocolate chip coffee cake pastries (honestly not entirely sure what they were, they just looked good so I grabbed them). The bagels were very good, but just a little on the softer side in terms of consistency, which I like but I know some people like the outside to be a little crustier. I put my chocolate chip pastry in the microwave for 15 seconds before eating and it made it just a little warm and the chocolate a little melty and it was SO GOOD. The couple downsides are that the hours are very limited and that they only accept cash or personal check, so be sure you check the hours before going and if you're normally a credit card person be sure to come with cash. read more

We would stop at this family owned bakery every few weeks to buy the best challah dough. Then we found out our son has a severe nut allergy and learned that Shalom Bakery is also nut free. I don't know why they decided to be a nut and dairy friendly bakery but we are so grateful to have them nearby and everything is delicious! This place is such a hidden gem. It's extremely rare to find a nut free bakery pretty much anywhere. I'm so glad I found this place! The woman working there was very welcoming and let me try a piece of the pumpkin chocolate chip muffin. It was so good I had to buy one. I also got a raspberry chocolate chip coffee cake. It was really good, too. I was informed it's a cash only place. I'm not a fan of that since I rarely carry cash with me. Cute little bakery. We stopped in over the weekend looking for some pastries and decided to try Shalom. One thing to note is that it is much smaller than I thought it would be, and they didn't have a big selection. The counter has a display of items, mostly cookies and they have large pastries for a group. The main items they were selling were jelly filled rolls and they had some bagels. The taste and quality was very good, delicious. I would go back but it's limited on items. Many people put in orders ahead of time and picked them up. That's probably the way to go. read more

We love this place~ You can smell the sugar before you walk in to the bakery which is a huge draw for me knowing they bake onsite. Everything is made day of. I love coming in and seeing the shop owner. She remembers us and has a free cookie for my toddler before we even get to the door. You can tell she is a sweet Grandmother. This is a place to go for anything. Need some Challah for amazing french toast or a holiday diner, come here. The only Kosher bakery in the area makes this place well visited. Their selection is remarkable - consider that in order to be a certified kosher bakery in this area they may not use any milk products in any of their baking. For those of you unfamiliar, this is called parve. (You may see this word on some foods you buy at grocery stores.) They are known for the challah (egg bread). When you go inside, they have row upon row of baker's trays and tables filled with them - regular, poppy seed, raisin. All very, very good. They also have pastries, cookies, cakes, pies and many Eastern European sweets. They also make cakes to order. If you do, make sure you give them plenty of notice. Also, if they give you a pickup time, give them a little extra as they are known to miss their windows from time to time. But, their baked goods are really outstanding. read more

In the past I have very much liked the selection and quality of their challahs (though their cookie decoration sets were not tasty pre pandemic but functional as a craft for the kids). Recently their selection has been very low and they have started to become rude to customers. I couldn't get rolls for a Bat Mitzvah. None. No rolls, hardly any challahs. The hamentashen are tiny and hard with little filling. Not worth $1 per piece and it did not look as advertised online. It feels like they are possibly going out of business or having a very bad business cycle. My business will be going elsewhere. I sincerely hope that they recognize that they should be kind to customers and improve the quality and selection of their bakery goods. In short: a small nut free, dairy free, cash only, bakery tucked away in a shopping center. Delicious custom ordered sheet cake, less fruit filling than expected. Amazing rugelach tasted like a crisp apple pie. Customer service from Liat and cashier was responsive and attentive. Details: I ordered a custom half sheet cake for my son's birthday recently. Although the bakery doesn't have a direct website or online brochure, a quick Facebook direct message, or phone call, with Liat helped provide all the options and details I needed to pick the perfect cake. On the morning of my pickup, I found out the cake had flowers rather than the balloons and confetti that I had ordered (cashier showed me the paper order which stated balloons and confetti). The cashier felt terrible, but was the only one available, so she did the next best thing and gave us some cookies and rugelach on the house to make up for the small mistake! I didn't mind the flowers, but she insisted on keeping our business, which I would have after the great customer service and taste of the pastries and cake; and the pastries...delectable. The sheet cake half chocolate/half vanilla was smooth and the non dairy whip cream was light and balanced with the fresh strawberries. Only downside on the cake was that there wasn't as many strawberries as expected, but still delicious. The rugelach was also mouth watering, as it tasted like a crisp apple pie. Shabbot Shalom!! I absolutely love this bakery. There's something so homey coming in every once in a while where you just don't want to leave. The manager Liat, is super nice, always there to help you out if you need advice picking something out, she's just super friendly and that's always a plus going anywhere. Also, the fact that she's there almost every day is another plus so you know you're always in good hands. I have to say that I love challah, I can eat it day or night, sun or rain, it is my go to comfort food and I must say that Shalom Bakery makes the best challah that I've ever had. It is always fresh, never stale, super soft and has the perfect combo of sweetness to it. It is just pure perfection. I literally need to come every Friday and get a loaf of it for my family because it is just that good. And it's for a really good price of $3 so that honestly cannot be beat. I know they cater to the Jewel in Buffalo Grove, but if you want it the most fresh, you have to come here and get it. Now let's not stop on the Challah, everything here is super tasty from my best friends love of their chocolate croissants (they are pretty darn good) to my love of all the different types of Kosher cookies they have. I haven't tried the bagels but I hear that those are also very good. Overall, this place truly is a hidden gem. The only downfall is that it's cash only, but I remember I didn't have the tax one time in change so Liat gave it to me for the $3 instead of the $3.08 I owed which is super sweet if you ask me. Shalom Bakery is my favorite place to get challah. I've also tried the chocolate chip coffee cake and an assortment of bagels; all of which were nothing short of completely delicious. This bakery is not local to me but I will make the trip to Buffalo Grove just to stock up for the week, although sometimes the treats I bring home don't last more than a few days. It's probably a blessing this bakery isn't closer to me as I would probably have a weight problem. The staff is friendly and always helpful. It's always a treat to visit this place. read more

I have been having to be in this area a couple of times a week recently. Now, I do not know much about Jewish food or bakeries but I know I have a love for real bagels and Challah. Looking on Yelp, this place popped up and I decided to check it out. It's a small spot a little bit hidden in a small strip mall. Seeing it's location and noticing their trucks, I figure that they must do a good business supplying markets and other spots delivering their goods. Went in, and picked up a loaf of Challah. I love a good Challah and frankly this was the best Challah I ever had. It was outstanding. Service was friendly. I am definitely going back for more. So good. We got their bagels in a lox box last year, and I always wanted to come up and get more as I found their bagels unique. I was running late and called, and the woman on the phone was so nice and reserved my bagels for me, and reminded me they only take cash/check. They do a great job with social distancing, and I picked up a rainbow challah kit too- so cute! It came with instructions and I can't wait to make it with my kids. But on to the bagels. THE BAGELS YOU GUYS! The best. They are different in that they are soft, almost airy for a bagel, I gave some to my parents who absolutely loved them because they can chew them without difficulty. The flavor is divine! This is a good half hour drive from me but worth it, my family is already asking when I can go on another bagel run. I can't wait to try their other goodies as well.
