We have ordered for years from this area favorite. My go to place for excellent Chinese food, reasonably priced. The restaurant is small, unassuming, mostly a takeout business with a few inside seats. Don't let that dissuade you. The food is always fresh and prepared to order, done quickly but properly. The sauces are nice, not thickened with too much cornstarch on the items I have ordered, though I dislike sweet and sweet and sour, so I am talking about the savory and/or spicy varieties. My newest favorite dish is the Fish Filet with Bok Choy, and I request it spicy. It's light, flavorful and absolutely delicious. The fried rices are lovely, fluffy not greasy. The Wonton soup is flavorful and I love that the wontons are packed in a separate container from the broth so they don't get soggy. The portions are generous and the staff is very pleasant, efficient and accommodating of special requests. Recently I came in right before closing, twice, with out of town guests and they were happy to prepare several dishes for us. I so appreciated that. read more

We arrived in town after a long drive and were tired and hungry, after checking into our Airbnb, we decided to order in as it was cold/rainy. I was a bit worried ordering Uber Eats from here because of the low ratings. I'm happy to say we had a good meal. I used a 60 percent off promo and was able to get pork fried rice and shrimp/broccoli delivered for 20 bucks( that included a 5.00 tip). It was a great value since the portions were large and the food was tasty. The shrimp/broccoli had a nice garlicky sauce. There was no steamed rice included, which I didn't realize when I ordered. Errr..... what can I say. The pieces were all there but.. the sesame chicken was the driest chicken I've ever had from Chinese cuisine. Where's the sauce? And what sort of cut is that? They were all oddly thin, square, and lacking any meat. Made me wonder what the heck I was eating. The cucumber salad I couldn't finish because it was like eating straight garlic. Actually, not "like" it, that's actually what it was. Garlic. I just kept reminding myself of the benefits of garlic. But whoa! The chow mein.. the pieces are all there. I don't know. Me and my husband ordered the Sesame Chicken, Wonton Soup, Egg Fried Rice, Mongolian Beef, and the fried egg rolls. We were referred here by a friend and was told that they had some of the best Sesame Chicken around. Me and my husband's usual spot when it comes to Chinese food, which we are usually very picky about, is usually either Tommy's Wok or Feng Nian in Sausalito. We thought we would try a new place and we were sadly mistaken. The Sesame chicken was dry and too sweet. It was very sticky and not much flavor outside of the sweetness. The wonton soup was very bland, especially the broth. It was watered down and didn't taste good at all. The egg fried rice was also very bland and dry. The Mongolian Beef was excessively chewy. This is not a place that I would be coming back to. I will be sticking to what I know. read more

Some of the worst Chinese food I've ever had. I got the lemon chicken as lots of people left good reviews about it, but it was rubber, bland, and with tons of sugar. Didnt taste any lemon in it at all either. Next up we got the hot and sour soup. It was very sour, not horrible but also not something I would want again. The shrimp dumplings were alright. The beef chow mein had some nasty beef. When I say nasty I mean like week old refrozen many times stanky as heck beef. Had to toss that whole thing out. Bleh. Finally, the eggplant in garlic sauce was very undercooked so I had to throw it in a pan and add garlic and other seasonings as it was bland and inedible. It can be hard to find cheap Chinese food that isn't super greasy/salty...but Shang Hai Kitchen is a rare gem that's both high quality food AND at great prices!! I've only done takeout so I can't speak for the indoor dining, but it's a perfect takeout option! You HAVE to try the Egg Yolk Lava Bao buns. These are the best buns in the Bay Area! My Husband and I love this place for an easy, quick Dinner that really is tasty food. And, their service is great! We recently tried Their "Singapore Style Noodle" as a side dish instead of rice and absolutely love it! -- It is a nice change from rice and love the "pasta" style noodle! WE also downloaded their App "Beyond Menu" on Our iPhones and it is super easy to order from!! Firstly, to the detractors here who complained about greasiness, well... to me it tasted like authentic Chinese home cooking, or the kind of good Chinese restaurant cooking I'm used to being a San Francisco native relocated to Mill Valley. I'm not Chinese but Asian (Filipino) so my sensibilities were not offended: grease comes with the territory. Secondly, I am excited to have finally found an "authentic" Chinese restaurant in the area. We used to go to Ping's in San Rafael, but the owners changed and the food now to us is bleh. Really disappointed last time we went and not going back. Granted, Harmony in Strawberry is a treat - pricey and upscale, still definitely a go-to. But my craving for the down-home, real-deal, no frills, familiar San Fran Chinese restaurant offerings were unmet by the other mom-and-pop Chinese eateries in the area. We started with the pork-filled fried won-ton which, I have to admit, didn't meet my expectations but it was good enough. I think the oil might have been old from the day (we ate at 6 pm) and the won tons were a little dark and didn't have a crispy consistency throughout. I'll just ask them for extra crispy next time. The Mongolian lamb: flavorful and tender bits of lamb. It was delicious. Black bean chicken: my husband ordered this and while very tasty as well, the chicken also tender, black bean isn't one of my favorite preparations. However, the vegetables in the dish were fresh and crispy. The whole sugar snap peas were a real surprise (you usually get snow peas in Chinese). They were crunchy and sweet. The braised green beans were perfect: also fresh and crispy. And yes, y'all, all dishes came with their share of grease - but not unpleasant or overwhelming... just familiar. We were given complimentary slices of fresh sweet watermelon after dinner -- also reminiscent of old-school Chinese restaurant service. The ambience? What ambience? It's a hole in a strip mall. They have beer and wine but only one type of red and white... and they don't sell by the glass; you have to buy the small bottle. They do have bobba however, in a variety of flavors. I'll go back (I hate delivery... I want my food hot, right out of the wok; and there were a lot of pick-up orders happening while we were there). The best Kung Pao Tofu! The tofu is always fresh and soft on the inside. I always order the peanuts on the side, too. They also have very good spicy eggplant. I recommend Shang Hai Kitchen if the want the best quality food and great portion sizes for the price. We are so lucky to have this Chinese food gem in Mil Valley! read more

New owner but very much still May Lee's. Pretty much the same delicious Hot and Sour Soup. Just no more sushi (sadly) but everything we had was fresh and great. Even the same guy at the counter (but 'happier'?!?). Glad to see May Lee's is not totally gone. Thank goodness! Absolutely unacceptable!!!!!! Luckily our order had arrived and been left at door without knocking. Other than the Orange Chicken that was overcooked and hard, and what appeared to be slices of Spam in the soup, the food was good. They charge extra for white rice to go with a $12.95 main entree. Nowhere on the menu, yelp page or grub hub was that indicated. So, no rice arrived to go with my meal. After traipsing around the redwoods for several hours, stopped by Shang Hai Kitchen for dinner with my husband. We were familiar with this establishment, as we had eaten there one time in the past. The food was okay at that time. This time, we stopped in around 5:00 pm on a Saturday and ordered food. We were told to return in 45 minutes to pick the food up. There weren't any other customers in line, so we figured this was a good sign we'd received the food in good timing. We were hungry. As we sat in the parking lot waiting, a few people started to line up. By 5:45, my husband returned to stand in the six person line to pick-up our order. He got into the restaurant at 6:00 pm and, when he asked about the food, the proprietress waved her hands at him in a "shoo"ing fashion. He stood to the side until she wasn't occupied with the plethora of phone orders and tried again around 6:15 pm. She didn't seem to know what we had ordered. He was told to wait. 6:30 pm rolls around. No food. The priority for distributing food at this establishment seems to be doordash or other phone-order methods before walk-ins. The other guests waiting for food near my husband also didn't receive their food. We wouldn't have minded waiting...but had not received accurate communication of a 2+ hour wait. By 6:45, we gave up waiting and left. So, one-star for the poor communication, disorganization, and terrible service. read more

Excellent Chinese cooking. I would describe this as rustic home cooking with a bit of gourmet style. The food is not too salty or oily and the vegetables are firm and with stylish cuts.
