Apparently, the guys like to change policy without the courtesy of a proper heads up...Been ordering lunch for a couple of years , getting their lunch special for pick up, leaving tips consistently on these orders for pick up no less, and had been accommodated on a regular basis to swap out soups.....out of no where , I placed the usual order , asked for the normal swap on the side order of soup and was quickly shut down on this... I mean like, WTF? I tip these guys on the regular...why would they abruptly shut me down? (not for nothing but the side that comes with the order pretty much sucks...so instead of just tossing the damn side in the garbage I was accustomed to a better side.) Amazing sushi! I am a huge fan of sushi and there just weren't any good sushi places in this neighborhood--that is, until this place opened up! The All You Can Eat special is beyond amazing and totally worth it. They have a ton of appetizers, rolls and desserts that you can indulge in all for a set price (I think 19.95 during the week and 21.95 on the weekends). The AYCE special even includes special rolls! So worth the price!! More than the price though is the quality of sushi. It is extremely fresh and always delicious. Definitely give this place a shot; you won't regret it! read more

The wait staff are great, sometimes overwhelmed on a Friday or Saturday night but genuine nice guys. I always do the all you can eat and love it! I eat in or do take out at least once a week and I have never had a bad experience. The food is always fresh and the restaurant always appears clean. It's a small place, cute kitchen Asian-y decor; gold wall paper, shogun statue by the door, gold, good luck pig on the counter, paper umbrellas hanging upside from the ceiling... We ordered off the AYCE menu. The choices were plentiful enough. There is a disclaimer of being charged if there is food wasted. Our waiter, Mitch,, was super friendly and walked us thru the ordering process since we were new to the place. It was suggested you order small first, to see how much you can handle, and if you want more or something different, you order more. Not a bad set up. Ok..... Sooooo, Where do I start? I got to the place (Shangri La) and was told to sit anywhere (Because it was empty on a Saturday) which is quite alright with me. So I get seated and it takes about 15 minutes before I even am able to order a drink. When the server finally comes to serve me and my family, The Bar is closed..... HUH??!!? Did I miss something?? So I was forced to drink a warm beer (Corona). I only stayed because I already wasted 15 minutes there so I thought it couldn't possibly get any worst plus they were extremely short staffed. I saw 2 people doing 6 different things each. So I still decided to give it a fair chance. I ordered food (Steamed Dumplings and Beef Lo-Mein) When the food finally got there it tasted decent. I tried this place again. Horrible. The sesame chicken was as hard as a rock. The waiter, after trying for 20 minutes to get his attention, asked me if I wanted the chef to cook more..really? The spicy wontons were covered with thai peanut sauce that made them a slimy mess at best. The ice cream was water with some sugar added to it. Truly disgusting. I've been on a mission trying every sushi spot around my house. My sushi order was huge. When I opened my bag I didn't expect so much sushi. Never again ! I was giving this place a second try but the food has gotten worst ! The first time I came here they included the softshell of my softshell crab roll in my sushi and I was choking , yet the waitress said I should have known because I ordered it , and today we ordered a lot of the tempuras because my friend and I like it however the shrimp was so filled with oil , every bite was a river of oil in my mouth and because we couldn't finish the sushi because it was drenched in oil , they charged my friend and I ;an extra 8 bucks . I was in the Bronx, and my girlfriend said she had been to this restaurant before. Being an asian foodie, I figured she had found another gem of a place for us to dine at. No. Here's the breakdown of the tragic event. Sushi (2/5) I eat sushi approximately once a week. I always order the same thing: salmon and california rolls. At Shangerila, the rolls are incredibly small, and mostly rice. It's a terrible feeling to shell out $5.50 at Shangerila for a roll I pay $5 elsewhere, and still manage to get less fish. Red Curry (1/5) The chicken and vegetables were swimming in the red curry sauce. Again, this is a staple of mine...so I know how it's supposed to taste. Frankly, the sauce didn't even taste like it was a coconut milk base. It tasted so rich, my girlfriend and I think they use cream. Yes, you read that correctly. The sauce was also too salty, and not spicy at all. Red curry shouldn't leave you thirsty from salt. It should leave you slightly sweaty from the heat. Service (1/5) The service was terrible. My girlfriend had to get the waiter from the back because he wouldn't come up to check on us. When I went to the bathroom, I noticed that ALL five employees were having intense text-message conversations...or were deeply focused on phone games. I can't imagine the owner was present, because that is a huge no-no. My girlfriend tried the $21.95 buffet for sushi to see if that was something we should frequent the restaurant for. It sounds a lot better than it played out though. The rolls were almost entirely rice. Also, they put so much sauce on the specialty rolls that they were, for the most part, un-edible. Bottom line: If you're thinking about going to Shangerila; Stop, drop, and roll away. read more

I think Shangerila is above average for a neighborhood restaurant especially in our neighborhood.The place is colorful and cheery and the waitstaff very friendly. The sushi is excellent ,definitely the thing to order. Also like the dumplings. Hoped that business would pick up after they got their liquor license but I fear that this hasn't been the case. Came here last week for the unlimited sushi dinner and was very impressed! $20 per person on weekdays gets you a selection from hot appetizers, a very large selection or regular and special sushi and sashimi, bubble tea, and ice cream for dessert. Glad I found this place...I recently moved to the Bronx and became quickly aware that the food culture in my neighborhood (Wakefield) isn't very diverse. I needed a sushi fix, so I yelped and ShangriLa had some good reviews. Luckily it wasn't too far of a drive, and it's right off the 6 train. My sushi and seaweed salad was really good. We went to this place on a Friday evening at about 9:30 pm. We were seated after a 15 minute wait in a booth that needed upgrading. The restaurant itself was clean but in need of new seating and decor. There was a mixed crowd: College students, couples, families with children and a loud, drunk group going to the club??? They also played kung fu movies on a wide screen television above the sushi station. We ordered the mongolian beef, coconut bubble tea, a phoenix sushi roll and a red bean fried ice-cream for dessert. We shared all entrees as this was our first time eating here and we wanted to just sample a few things from the menu. That being said, everything seemed o.k. until a family member had the ice-cream and became ill. Based off of one of us becoming sick from the food, we will not be back again. **UPDATE: I received a message via Yelp from The NYS Dept. of Health requesting an interview with my family member to discuss what illness they had? Here's response: Please send an employee from the NYS Dept. of Health to test the food at this establishment. After waiting over an hour, I called and they told me the driver left 5 minutes ago. 15 minutes after that I called back and they said that they would personally deliver my order. Always love coming here! Ever since it was recommended to me by a friend I've visited frequently and every time is a great time. The sushi is always fresh and well made and the chicken and beef selections are amazing as well. I've had the opportunity to taste a pretty good amount of the menu and was never disappointed. I recommend coming with a group because if you order enough sushi it comes out on this huge, epic boat! Definitely a must see!
