Tonight I was in one of those moods where I wanted to go out to eat but didn't want to go out (you know?). I had Shangerila bookmarked for a while, and it's close enough to me so I decided to try it for dinner tonight. Shangerila's dining room isn't too large; the decor is typical Asian restaurant with a sushi bar against the back wall, dark colors, and flashing lights throughout. They play loud house music which can be a bit distracting. When we were seated we were given a choice of two menus: the regular dinner menu or the all-you-can-eat sushi menu. Now, I realize that the fact that Shangerila has an AYCE sushi menu is one of the restaurant's primary attraction points, but I don't personally feel that sushi should be AYCE. I enjoy sushi and have no qualms about eating it, but I see sushi as a work of art and something that takes time and skill to prepare - I question the quality of AYCE sushi. That being said, I chose the regular menu :-p The regular menu has sushi (gasp), as well as typical Asian restaurant dishes. We decided to start with the pork gyoza and the boneless spare ribs. The ribs were pretty good - the flavor was good and it wasn't overly greasy. The gyoza were also really good, perfect dough:pork ratio and great flavor. For my main I took the basic bitch route and went with sesame chicken; it comes standard with white rice but I went with brown (my equivalent of ordering a Diet Coke with a double bacon cheeseburger). The dish was good, but nothing out of the ordinary. Overall, Shangerila is a solid neighborhood Asian restaurant. I can't attest to how their sushi is, but their regular food is good. I wouldn't say I'm running back here (I can get the same or better elsewhere) but I wouldn't be against returning. read more

Though the service very slow- we enjoyed our dinner last night. They have an all you can eat option that you can choose to opt into or not. If you don't opt in- like my partner- you just order regular menu items at menu price. I opted in the AYCE because I was in the mood for a lot of sushi! They offered regular sushi rolls but most impressively specialty rolls like the ninja roll, angle roll, etc. What was impressive that on the left side of the AYCE menu was regular item foods like traditional Asian-American appetizers (spring roll, edamame, crab Rangoon, wontons, etc), they also had regular dishes like general tso, low mein, teriyaki beef/chicken and a whole other bunch of food. It's definitely worth the AYCE price especially if you want more than sushi! All you can eat fri- Sunday is $23.95 and the rest of the week is $21.95. They will charge you $15.95 a lb for any sushi portion you don't finish! read more

Me and my partner have spent hundreds of dollars on this place in food, drinks and service tips. My partner is an E.R doctor and naturally was horrified that the food I picked up yesterday was unclean. The guy at the counter was incredibly defensive and rude about the situation despite me having pictures of literal feces in the shrimps. I recommend Sushi Q down the street as the quality of their food has never disappointed me in the years I've been going. There's thousands of food related deaths each year, this is why, this place isn't up to standard on their food handling. I'll take 3 boats please. a group of 7 of us went when we heard that it's $20 AYCE sushi (it's like $22 on fri-sun) and we were not disappointed. they have a 90min time limit for ordering food, but don't worry too much cuz you can order as much as you want, and you can keep ordering until you're full. And it's not just AYCE sushi.. it's AYCE for anything on that menu, which includes bubble tea, appetizers, chinese food, desserts, sashimi, soup, salad, etc... but don't fill up too much on the other stuff. So we literally ordered every single special roll they had on their AYCE menu. TWICE. plus, we got some sashimi and other regular sushi rolls and pieces on side. hence, the 3 boats full of raw fish... the salmon sashimi was suprisingly good! i didn't expect it to be fresh in the bronx, but not bad. Red snapper was okay too, but salmon was better. mackerel was eh. white tuna was a little weird... the other rolls.. i can't really remember which ones were better because it all became a blur. but a lot of them were really similar. but they were all pretty good. However, i actually would recommend not getting ALL of the special rolls like we did, because so many of them were similar (and most had shrimp tempura). shrimp tempura is good, but if u want some real sushi fish, order more off the sashimi and sushi sections too. some non sushi foods that were good: rock and roll shrimp, general tso's chicken udon was meh. bubble tea: i tried both taro and thai tea. both were good, but a little too sweet. the tapioca balls were also a little too soft/mushy for my taste... but still good! I recommend that you come with a large group. this way you can try a lot of different things. they make you pay per pound for the food you don't finish, but the waitress was nice and didn't make us pay even though we had a few pieces leftover.. we were so full. Given we are regulars here, we didn't order that much and did not even put in a second order of sushi, and not that much food was left, I was very disappointed in the attitude they gave us. This sushi spot used to be my favorite until a couple things happened. Firstly, I took my family out to eat here. It had been several times since I came and the food was always delicious and affordable compared to other spots. We ordered a special roll along with a sushi platter. My son had to spit out the roll bc it had pieces of hard broken plastic in it. I let the management know and they were apologetic and ended up making a new roll along with giving us a 10% discount off the bill. After this happened, I continued to go there as well as order online. One evening, my husband ordered sushi to our home and I was diving into the special roll I got and pulled out a long huge piece of plastic. I was disgusted!!!! I checked the other rolls and again in 3 of them I found the same thing. This is so dangerous and is a choking hazard. I called them immediately and the man that picked up was like "ok." (Bad communication skills) I will not be going there anymore. Please be careful with this place bc they are not hygienic and your kids, you, or another family member could be put at risk for something else ending up down their throat. Honestly I'm not sure how this place only has 3 stars. I ordered sushi right when they were about to close and they waited for me. I was craving sushi like crazy. And I absolutely LOVE sushi and have been to quite a few places. This place might actually be the best place. It's definitely in my top 3 now , right by Asian fusion in mount Vernon and this other place I go to in port Chester. I got the rainbow roll which was SUPER FRESH!!!!! And I also got the crazy tuna which was - I swear the best crazy tuna I ever had. They use REAL red tuna - not white tuna that's been died red. And they smoke their tuna idk what they do but it has this crazy intense flavor. Definitely recommend and looking forward to trying more of their sushi . I can't what until they open for all u can eat. read more

It gets gross after awhile and hey really drown the sushi pieces on sauces it kills the flavor and makes things soggy. I went to Shangerila for date night on a Saturday. It seemed to be a busy night but we were seated right away. My boyfriend and I opted for a regular menu instead of the All You Can Eat deal which did sound convincing but I knew I wouldn't be able to eat as much. I ordered Shrimp Teriyaki and my boyfriend ordered Chicken Teriyaki. Both came with veggies and a choice of white or brown rice. We were also given the options of a salad or soup as a starter. The wait for our food was average and our meal was great taste wise. I also ordered a mango green tea which was very flavorful and I highly recommend it. Lastly, our waiter was very attentive and made sure we had every thing we needed. All in all I have no complaints and I will visit again. read more

My wife and I were having the "all you can eat" menu, and the other couple were having something else. The owners gave us a choice for the whole table to eat "all you can eat" or choose separate menu. All this to insure that the other couple would not eat off our plate. That was ridiculous. I will never come back here again. To insinuate that grown adults cannot share a table and pay their own bills is absolutely absurd. Most of the appetizer items are store bought and tasted bland. Wait staff is hit or miss, but there is a waitress (short ponytail with glasses) is quite rude. They don't always give you everything you put down on your order sheet. Our last order of 4 pieces of salmon sashimi were never served. I had very mixed feelings about this restaurant. I passed by once last year, peeked at the menu, and found it to be a little too pricey for what to me read like basic Chinese takeout food. But it had piqued my interest; and as a result, I've been Yelp-stalking it for quite some time to see what people think. The reviews were good, although some seemed a little TOO good, if you know what I mean, so I persisted in avoiding it. Until last night, of course, when we were hungry and wanted Asian food but did not feel like dragging our butts to Queens. It finally struck my mind that Shangerila was a very viable option. It was a little late, and the place was nearly empty, but we went in anyway. For starters, the space is astonishingly beautiful. The lighting is not too dim nor bright, the wallpaper is a beautiful golden color with artwork, and there are added decorative multicolor lights. I don't know what this space was before, but it very well looks like it could have been a bar or lounge. Service is quite friendly, although they (inadvertently?) trap you into ordering drinks before glancing at the menu. Bubble tea is excellent, with good bubbles and tasty mix, but a little pricey at $4.00. Appetizers are a good deal, with the roti canai being far more expensive than it is in Flushing, but still decent. I won't compare it to an actual Malaysian restaurant, because that's not being fair. By far, the best deal here at Shangerila is the bento box. You get soup or salad, shu mai, California rolls, and rice for one price. The miso soup was quite flavorful and loaded with toful, while the shu-mai was cooked to perfection. The California rolls were good (all California rolls taste the same to me, though). The green curry shrimp were good, though I wish there were a few more shrimp. Overall, the food was quite good, service was good, and the atmosphere was amazing. However, there were only four parties in total. I know a lot of other reviews are commenting on how empty it is, and how you should go there, but hey, it's true. We don't have a lot of interesting dining experiences in the Bronx and it'll be a real shame to lose another one. Give it a try. Brotip: Get the fried red bean ice cream. I really want to like this place, but this is the third time that I've ordered food from here and found something in my food that didn't belong. The first time I ordered soup and found a piece of a straw wrapper inside. The second time I found a wire (I'm assuming from a wire brush) in my dish. This last time I found a hair in my curry. The above rating is based on my recent experience: After coming regularly over time, (I don't always check in, but I come often) with various groups, and telling many people about this place, I passed the word to a new group and we decided to come so they can compare this place to their regular place. Our group consisted of 6 people including a child. We all ordered from the 'all you can eat' menu and even though the child was obviously not going to eat the same as an adult was going to we expected and accepted that we would all be charged the adult rate since he reached over the 4 feet line. All 5 adults finish a huge platter which I will include a picture of. A total of 4 pieces were left from the adult platter. The little boy is 9 and he ate a lot but didn't finish his entire platter which initially consisted of 2 rolls. He ate more than half of the rolls in addition to the appetizers ordered. Previously, I've visited on different days of the week, different times and never had an issue. This one time when the little boy didn't finish his rolls, we're told that we have to pay for all of the excess food. When I explained that out of all the times I've been there, with all the groups I've invited, both larger and smaller than my current group, this has never been done before. Yes there is a disclaimer and we acknowledged it, however, this was a child. Then the waiter goes to get someone else. Another person comes over and explains how sushi is expensive and there are people starving all over the world. Really?? That wasn't necessary at all. None of us are here to starve other people nor are we taking food out of the mouths of others. It was not a matter of the charge, it was the principle of the matter. Basically charging a child an adult rate and then charging him for not being able to eat the food. Then they come back to tell us that the charge will be $5. No, I don't care about the $5 charge. None of us cared about the $5 charge. It was the principal of it all. My guests came from Queens, Yonkers and various other areas because of my telling them how great the food is and how great they staff is. We all drove from Riverdale to come enjoy the food and although the food was still very good and some staff members were pleasant, to be told we're being charged essentially $1 per piece we (a child) didn't eat left me baffled. And again this isn't food that the adults didn't eat, this is food that a 9 year old didn't finish. This was in addition to the 9 year old being charged as an adult. That was absurd. Again having gone before, this has never ever been an issue raised to any of my guest. No, I'm in no way celebrity status but I am a very loyal customer so to be approached in that way was a turn off. It definitely left a bad impression on the guest that I was with. 5 people decided not to return based on that one experience. When our bill was rang up we noticed that the additional $5 charge was not added. At that point unfortunately the damage was already done. A group that accumulated a $200+ bill and was happy about the food and had a great time then had the experience dampened by that last encounter. They decided that they would not return based on that exchange. Unfortunate, because again, the food is really delicious. The staff who were familiar with me continued to be pleasant and friendly and that I appreciated. There are workers there who are absolutely amazing and helpful and accommodating. This last experience just really left a bad taste in everyone's mouth. The issue was rectified but due to the entire encounter a potential group of returning diners has decided to instead go elsewhere. Very unfortunate. read more

From Chinese to Japanese this place has everything to please their customers. On my last visit, I ordered from the AYCE menu which is one of the highlights of this place. $25pp for pretty awesome sushi. Pretty reasonable price, considering the seafood is fresh and delicious! On the AYCE menu, there's also hot food from the kitchen available. Please try their Honey Walnut Shrimp!!! It's the best thing on that menu, besides the sushi rolls of course.
