In NJ there's limited Chinese food. Found this Soup dumpling place when I was in NJ and hungry. Price is pretty affordable, not too expensive. Ordered the Soup Dumplings Fried Pork Chop over noodle soup Will recommend those. NOT the best, but is descent. the Spicy wonton was not good at all. They looked like dumplings instead and from level 1-10 inn spicyness it was 1. (they put raw chopped onions on top of that so that was pretty ackward dish). I ate at this place pretty frequently before moving to Jersey City and sometimes I still crave it and wish I lived at home so I could get some shanghai treats. Their soup dumplings are pretty decent. Nothing like some of the ones you can get in Chinatown but still pretty good. My favorite is the spicy shredded beef soup noodles. Shanghai style noodles are a bit thicker. Note- there are two menus at this place. They have the typical westernized menu with general tso's chicken etc but they have a secret chinese menu that's mostly shanghai style dishes. I've had Chinese food in New York, LA, San Fran, Orlando, Atlanta, Augusta, Portland, Austin, Taipei, Shanghai and still nothing compares to this place found in the area where I grew up. The food is cheap and delicious. Everything I've ever ordered from this place has been great. I've taken friends here, they've fallen in love with the place. I've taken my girlfriend there. She's fallen in love with the place. Sometimes, the simplest dishes they offer are the best dishes. The xiao long bao is good. The scallion pancake is good. My all-time favorite dish however, is the simplest. It is the sauteed string beans. (there's pork there too) I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for Chinese food around the Matawan area. MMMM i have been here many times but this is the first time I checked it and took the time to review the place. The downside is that it's small but so far I never had to wait long to be seated. The environment is meh, BUT the food is SO GOOD! Get the "shiow luh-own tong bao" (steamed pork buns) It comes out super hot and delicious. Be careful not to burn your tongue. :P The beef noodle soup is great there too. The beef is tender! I also enjoy fried fish so I get the salt and pepper fish and rice. I forget if the rice comes with the dish or if you have to order it separately. Just came back from ny first visit to Shanghai Dumpling. We tried several of the items most frequently mentioned in the reviews here. When you arrive, go to the counter, take a menu and a pen. Find your table and circle your choices. Someone may come and pick up your order or you will bring it to the counter. We ordered: 1. Scallion pancakes: crisp but not greasy, very good. 2. Soup dumplings: homemade and tasty 3. Eggplant and pork: ok, but nothing special 4. Spicy shrimp and noodles: a huge bowl of noodles covered with a generous portion of shrimp swimming in a tasty, somewhat sweet and spicy sauce. Very good. 5. Hot spicy beef noodle soup: what a tasty broth! It was a huge bowl, more than enough for two. The beef pieces were tender and delicious. My favorite of the meal. It did wonders for my cold. I will probably be dropping in to get this soup as a take out as replacement for the generic egg drop soup we frequently get at our local spot. Plenty of food for two with a lot of extras taken home. $35. We could have fed 3-4 people with this much food. All and all, a very good meal. read more

We were newbies to the restaurant and certainly were not aware of their rules of the game. We sat down, waited and waited and finally I told my husband to go get a menu. Then we waited and waited again until finally the only server came by a little reluctantly to get our order. While eating, I saw that we should have picked up our menu and check the items we want and bring it back to the server. Their process is brilliant really. Quite efficient so next time we will follow protocol. They serve all my favorite Shanghainese breakfast items, all day long. The XLBs are indeed good. The soup inside the buns has a clean taste I prefer than joe Shanghai. The skin in thin and done right. I wish they have the crab roe version. The beef sandwich is good but not the greatest I've had. Glad I tired it though. The cucumber salad is a bit of a disappointment for me. Not enough vinegar and spice. Good to balance everything else we ordered but I can go without it. I also ordered the spicy beef noodle soup. The broth is full of flavor and deserves high score. The home made noodle is on the thicker side as expected. There are so many other dishes I want to try. This small place in a strip mall doesn't look like much, but it's a gem. It's a QSR operations, and those that don't understand will think the server is rude, but she's hardly and I even had some fun chat with her. The decor is utilitarian and the temperature is kept on the low side. What matters most is the food. Wow, the food is good. Zhao Long Bao came 8 in a steamer. Juicy, flavorful, and the wrapping is thin, but won't puncture if handled properly. The stir fried rice cake with pork and lightly salted mustard greens brought back memories of Suzhou immediately. The shredded turnip pastry is outstanding; flaky pastry with moist and creamy center, delish! Also had several whiteboard specials, like Cumin Beef and Shrimp with Tofu and edamame. All very nice. The overall style of the food is light on seasoning and spices, but full of "wok hey", a term I learned from Cantonese friends to mean fragrance from the wok, which signifies culinary techniques. Yeah, I love it and matters little I have to get up and pour myself tea from the big urn. I do wish they bring back the homemade soy milk though. They did such an excellent job. read more

My favorite place for some authentic Chinese food. The soup dumplings (on the menu are steam pork buns) are to DIE for. I have them on a weekly basis, and they're only $7 for a whole box of 8 of them. The Fried Rice is good too if you're trying to order something safe. While the seating arrangements and layout of this restaurant is pretty bare bones, the food is delicious. Beef Chow Mien: thick stir fried noodles, beef, and bean sprouts Flounder and Scallion: fried fish with scallions in some unidentifiable yet tasty sauce. Soup Pork Dumplings: not as good as I've had in Chinatown, but I've never even seen them served anywhere in NJ, so points for that. My friend and I ordered soup dumplings, 3 meet potstickers and the pancakes. The food was well priced for the quantity given, and the establishment was clean and friendly. However the food itself overall was bland. The soup dumplings were great but the pot stickers were bland and the soy sauce had little flavor. We ordered take out here - sesame chicken, shrimp shao mai, chicken lo mein, general tso chicken, and steamed dumplings - and it was mediocre at best. We weren't given any sauce for the dumplings or shrimp shao mai. The sesame chicken and general tso chicken were over cooked so they were tough and dry. No fortune cookies. My wife and I went here on a cold, icy and rainy day. The friendly hostess showed us to a table right away. She didn't mention, but we saw other guests helping themselves to hot tea from the dispensed, so I went and got some. We ordered the steamed pork bun appetizer and it was awesome! It does get dry quite quickly, but luckily we got our soup noodles. We tossed our pork bun in one of the hot soup with the noodles in the rather smallish bowls. I got the vegetable noodle bowl, which is huge and brothy, but a tad bland. My wife ordered the shrimp in chili gravy noodles. I combined both dishes and it was pretty awesome. My wife, being a spice freak, added more chili oil so she gets to eat all the leftovers :-( read more

My inlaws eat here almost every week. They're picky about real Taiwanese food, so this is the best one they've found and we go there every time we visit them in matawan. The taiwanese beef noodle soup is delicious! You get a lot of soft beef cubes, handcut noodles and mustard greens. We also like the steamed soupy dumplings (order that asap when you get seated) and a fish dish with tofu and veggies. But I don't stray too far away from the faves bc the soup and dumplings are enough of a treat when i'm there. Free self-serve water and hot tea. read more

As it was just lunch I ordered the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup, & the famous Steamed pork Soup Dumplings which I never had before. The Soup came out ion a huge bowl simmering with chunks of stewed meat & home made noodles.....specks of hot pepper throughout and a baby bok choy on top...you could tell these soups were cooking for a while as the flavors are deep and complex within them, the noodles have a great density & texture also but remain light Yummmmy! The came the bamboo steamer with these beautiful looking dumplings I heard so much about...also came with a shredded ginger/ soy/ vinegar dipping sauce......I placed one ion my mouth whole when I pierced the outer walls of these perfectly pinched pouches I was rewarded with a burst of glutenous yummmy liquid soupy goodness I had never tasted before followed by the pork filling, I also drizzled some of the home made Fire Oil that was on the table on each one too ; ).....Oh man Sooooooo Gooooood !! Wow. A friend recommended this place for a cool, quick bite when I was in the mood for dumpling and it definitely hit the spot. Its very casual, and you just check off the items you would like on the menu. The staff is super relaxed and helpful. Get the buns! Soup inside a dumpling. Mind blown. Also, highly recommend the Sha Cha Beef noodles and the spicy pork dumplings...! The beef sandwiches are a little dry, but still fun to try if you never have. The soups looked great and we got a spicy shredded beef soup to go and it was on point! Recommend eating it all in house while its hot and fresh tho. The only down fall was how quick everything came out, we ordered 6 dishes and they were all out on the table within 15 minutes of ordering, makes it the perfect spot to go if you're hungry and don't want to wait. The spicy chili oil on the table is unbelievable too, if they bottles it I would be them by the gallon. This place is so good, it's by far my favorite Chinese place. You can't get it this authentic and delicious without going to Queens in my opinion. I have been here probably at least 50 times with my friends over the years. It seems like no matter what new dish we try that we had never ordered, it is always fantastic. They always use fresh ingredients, their food is flavorful, and not over salted. The steamed pork buns are an all time favorite, and I love the mapo tofu, and the ja ja myun. I love their authentic dishes, but I also noticed that their american style dishes (general tso's, lo mein, etc) are exceptionally good. The general tso's is by far the best I've ever had. It's not soggy, it's crisp on the edges, and they use large, whole chunks of good white meat (as opposed to the typical soggy wad of bread with a nickel sized piece of chicken somewhere in there that you get at many Chinese places). And it's BYO, so bring a bottle and enjoy! read more
