Whenever we are in the mood for delicious Chinatown style food we come here. Never disappoints. A truly wonderful, no frills, reasonably priced, dining experience. There are dishes here that you won't find on the menu at your local Chinese go to place. We ate here this evening, and twice last week. Each meal better than the next. Try the mussels. They are huge, fresh, and delicious. The dumplings are all outstanding. We always order beef with noodles in sha cha sauce that is amazing. My wife is a vegan and there is never an issue finding wonderful vegetable dishes or excellent choices with rice noodles. You may be asked to sit at a community table with others but that's part of the fun and wonderful experience at Shanghai Bun. Highly recommend it. read more

Chinatown Chinese food in Matawan NJ? No way but yes way, can't go wrong with the food at Shanghai Bun (however better in then ordering out). Could use a refresh inside bit old and dated but great food. Amazing. My family eats no pork and the lady at the front was able to guide us towards options that worked. Just chicken and rice. Nothing special. The place looks like a old hole in a wall. Once I walked in the door it is filled with garbage business cards and crap laying around the door. This is definitely a place you want to get Chinese food! Get and dumpling here BUT especially the Pork Soup Dumpling. The Lunch Specials are great and solid portions! This is real Chinese food. There are actually two menus: one for the unadventurous American with the usual takeout grub, and another with the authentic dishes (if you are Caucasian like me, you will have to ask for this one LOL). Their dumplings are just fantastic, as are their noodle dishes. I also tried their ox-tail soup which was worth it just for the broth alone. I can't wait to go back and explore the menu some more. No frills here. Just do yourself a favor: do not come here and order fried rice or sweet and sour chicken. Yeah, they have those things but try something new. I really had high Hope for this place. I drove 15 min out of the way just to try it to say I was disappointed is an understatement. The best thing about my order was their spicy beef soup. On it's own, it gets a 5 star review. However, all the rest of the food was underwhelming and had strange flavors. Got their, flavorless, pan fired chicken dumplings. Literally had zero flavor outside of the dough. Sesame chicken was too sweet and extremely dry. I never ate sesame chicken like this. Chicken and broccoli in garlic sauce should be renamed to mostly garlic sauce with brocolli and very few pieces of chicken. Their chicken wings were over fried. I eat Chinese food a lot and have never been as disappointed with the taste as I was in this place. If fairness, I only went to try this place based on the 300 amazing reviews. Not sure what all, or any, of the hype is about. Maybe I had unreasonably high expectations for this place because of the great reviews. Literally any other neighborhood Chinese restaurant would blow this place away. Either way, I wish them luck but sincerely hope they improve the kitchen. read more

I decided to freeload off of my friend's family and come to dinner with them to one of their favorite restaurants--Shanghai Bun. We ordered many different dishes to share such as pork soup dumplings, spicy thai noodles, udon noodles with tofu, and fried rice with beef. However, due to the fact that I do not eat beef or pork, and because I'm not very accustomed to flavor (I am caucasian), I primarily refrained from most of the dishes and hoarded an order of steamed vegetable dumplings for myself instead. The price was super great for the amount of dumplings (around $5 for 6). In fact, serving sizes for every dish were quite large with a small price tag. The dumplings were very filling in a good way, although lacking just a bit in flavor (and coming from me, that's saying something!). But overall, I really enjoyed the taste of everything I tried. And for the low price, it's hard to beat! This is a place worth checking out if you want something authentic that will go easy on your bank account. read more

Portions are HUGE. Ordered 50$ worth of food and im pretty sure me and my gf have leftovers for days. Food was pretty good, general tsos chicken was a little dry but the sauce was good. The general tso shrimp on the other hand was pretty amazing. Also ordered the 3 different dumplings and the 3 meat was definitely the best of the bunch. It's a small place but had a lot of people coming and going. Lack of table service is why I docked a star, no water or glasses, paper cups and a fridge with drinks. Definitely a takeout place. I inquired about byob and the server said they do not. All in all we will be returning, although takeout only. read more

A total enigma. Somehow Chinese Father in Law found out about it and told us we had to try. Was unassuming from the outside and not much better once in. Two menus- Chinese and whitey. We ordered the soup dumplings and two soups. Our bill ended up like $20 and we had a filling meal with leftovers. But, what you DO get more than makes up for what this place is lacking in style points. Seriously delicious, authentic Chinese food in a quiet little strip mall storefront. This place is amazing. We'd exhausted literally every other Chinese restaurant in our town before finding SB, and now it's the only place we go. Husband and I like to get two dishes and split them, and always, always have more than enough for a meal of leftovers. I start with the soup dumplings (which, btw, you can't find ANYWHERE by us) and have no problem killing the whole order on my own. Yeah, they really are that good. SB has delicious noodle soups, tons of vegetable dishes, and stuff you really can't get anywhere else (mmmm, pig intestine! okay, I'm not there yet... but someday). Just the fact that husband and I go to SB and we're the only anglos in the place speaks volumes about the authenticity of the food. This is an update to my very recent review of this restaurant. I went there solely for the food. There is a girl who works the front desk who wears these blue latex gloves. She is so awful it ruined our joyous celebration (Chinese New Year). Firstly, it was not crowded at all. I go up there and get the menus as my husband gathers the tea for everyone. Secondly, after we place the orders and have the food brought to us, she constantly puts the hot dishes on the very edge of the table, after we cleared a spacious spot in the middle of the table for her. We also asked her for an extra bowl of rice and some plates since we had a lot of dishes that we were going to all share (family style dinner). She had the audacity to whine in Chinese about how we are working her to death. I replied to her back in Chinese, we have 1 soup and 4 special platters. All we were given were bowls and spoons for the soup. Hence, we need plates. After dinner, we had a lot of soup left so I went up to her counter to ask her if she could kindly get a soup container for me for my soup. She rolled her eyes at me. Noticed she was like that to all the customers there. She needs an attitude adjustment. Great food but horrible service. Last time it was better mainly because there was this male person who was helping her out and he is much nicer. Aggravated but will only go back to do take out. read more

I went with some people from Taiwan and they said this place is legit. On weekends, this place fills up with Chinese speaking folks and you can tell they are repeat customers. This place is authentic as it gets for shanghai cuisine in this sheltered, suburban area. The space is small and nothing special, service is ok, but the food is the star. Our favorite dishes are the dried bean curd with black bean sauce, the garlic chicken, rice cakes, and of course, the soup dumpling gs, which are bursting with flavor. If you know real shanghai cuisine but you're stuck in matawan, then you're in luck and this is your spot. read more

OMG, this is my FAVORITE restaurant and my go-to place whenever I am home. Here are my reasons for LOVING this restaurant to death: - Everything is hand-made and cooked fresh. You can taste the bites in the noodles to know that they are freshly made and not ready store bought. - Authentic! How many Chinese restaurants have you been to still serves fresh and authentic Chinese food? That's right, this place will serve all the pork, leeks and pig's ears it want, and I love that they are unique and kept that edge! - Fast service. It's not very attentive in the traditional sense, but who cares if the food is so good? I totally don't mind dropping off my orders with the front desk and then getting up to pay. It's not a traditional sit and serve restaurant any ways, so don't try to judge it as one, because it's not. For those of you new diners, count yourself lucky, because I so remember the days we used to eat off of plastic and styrofoams. The owner has since become more environmentally conscious so you can use the China plates and utensils. - Free tea/hot water. You want something to drink? Good for you. Get it yourself. The best part? it's free. Below are my favorite dishes, I highly recommend you trying them at least once, if you haven't yet. They are my favorites! 1. Steam Pork Buns - careful you don't burn your tongues! 2. Scallion pancakes - can be oily, but so delicious! 3. Dan Dan Noodles - this is a simple and traditional Chinese noodles. Can be spicy! 4. Da Lu Noodles - this is my favorite! It has all sorts of ingredients, from tomatoes to bean sprouts to wood ears, topped with eggs and a delicious soup. I don't even know what is the English equivalent of this dish. If you don't read Chinese, just simply tell the waiter or waitress that you want "Da Lu Noodles" and he will understand to serve you this traditional noodle soup. Do not get their Spicy Wonton-- this is maybe one of their few dishes, that is definitely store bought. It was not good at all, but overlook this flaw by trying some of the other delicious dishes above! If I have to say one complaint about this restaurant is this- try to smile just a little bit more? Or at least do something to build that repeat customer network? I know your food is delicious and people are coming in from and left and right, but there is no reason for looking so sour all the time. I can say that as a repeat customer, I have felt more than once, frustrated, by one of the male staff waiters whose facial expression made you feel unwanted and almost un-welcomed. Look, I want to dine at your place, because I love your food, but I also want to have a good experience too, so it would be great if you would simply smile at me every time I'd walk through the door? I have to come to NJ from California every year to spend the holidays with the in-laws. New Jersey is slowly growing on me thanks to places like Shanghai Bun. SERIOUSLY, THESE DUMPLINGS ARE THE S#!T!!! Really, I think they are better than Din Tai Fung -- thicker and fatter and juicier. I love this place. Not only are they very accommodating to vegans, the woman at the front remembers we're vegan every time we come in. She is happy to sub out vegetables for meat in any dish. I recently went with five people, spent a bit over $35 and we had leftovers...and that's with my husband who eats enough for two people. I wish they had a vegan substitution for their soup buns. I wouldn't give this place 5 stars because it could definitely use some improvements in the seating area. There aren't many tables available and the staff doesn't clean off the tables quick enough. It is a 1/2 self-serve and 1/2 serve type place. You can walk up and grab a soda or tea, but the food from the kitchen is brought out to you. In regards to the food, well no complaints here. This is hands down one of the better places in NJ to get soup dumplings. Food is super affordable and it comes out of the kitchen fast. AND THE FOOD IS DELICIOUS!!! My husband wanted soup dumplings so we yelped it and wound up here. It was perfect for what we wanted. No-frills, good food. The soup dumplings are called steamed pork buns on the menu. They were very good as was the beef sandwich. My husband thought it had too much cilantro but I am a fan of cilantro and I thought it was refreshing. Skip the deep-fried cruller. I feel like it should've come topped with powdered sugar or something. This isn't Shanghai Joe's or Chinatown but it was good for passing through Matawan. read more

This is a hole in the wall Chinese restaurant and it is amazing. The lines are long but so worth the wait. The soup buns are heaven and all the dishes are so good. The General Tso's isn't like most take out places, it tastes fresh. I absolutely love this place. My entire family talks about this place and eats here regularly. Yummy! read more
