The only other one that I can compare to is Joe's Shanghai, but that's a hike to go down to Chinatown for a quick fix! So Shanghai Bun is great to have in Edison. Found this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try. Walking in I noticed that almost all the customers were Chinese. This is a good sign since it means that this is where the good Chinese food is. This is a small place and not too many tables but we did not have to wait since we were early for lunch on a Saturday. My family sat at a table for 4 and was a bit confused since no one gave us menus or water or anything. I thought maybe it was one of those help yourself Chinese places so I went to the register and got a paper menu to look at and we ordered with the guy behind the register. We got the fried pork chop noodle soup, chicken with mustard green noodle soup, scallion pancake, soup dumplings and two drinks. We originally came here to try the soup on dumplings but when u saw that most of the customers had noodle soups we decided to order it too. I am glad we did. The noodle soups were yummy. They were hand pulled noodles and the broth were good. Not loaded with msg. The bowls were big size too. The soup dumplings were ehh. I was not impressed by them. They were a bit small and the skin were thicker than I am use to. Taste similar to frozen ones I can buy in the grocery store and steam myself. The scallion pancake was just okay too. This is our "go to" for Chinese food. The decor and service is nothing to write home about but you can't beat the food! Try the sweet and sour fish - it's not on the menu but we always ask for it and they accommodate us. The steamed soup buns are excellent as well. read more

This place is a fantastic little gem in the middle of Matawan. Ive brought my wife there a few times for lunch. Its a small place but has plenty of seating. Lunch specials are extremely generous portions at a great price. The food is awesome to say the least. Very authentic and absolutely delicious. Ive gotten the spicy peanut noodles which were superb and the dim sum which was great. Cant say enough good things about this place. Go there for the best chinese food hands down. read more

I came here because I was interested in their shanghai buns. Though they're alright, I don't like the style of the bun's skin, which is made with a rising dough I believe. Also, the meat on the inside is very loose, rather than in a more compact clump. Compared to the greatness of Joe's Shanghai buns, these pale in comparison. However, their other food was not bad. The chinese grass (jiu cai) fried dumplings were pretty good, while their trademark beef noodle soup with handmade noodles was also pretty good. The noodles especially have very good consistency for the soup, and the beef in the soup is also very tender. However, I feel like the restaurant is usually a little bit too cold, and the food is not very spectacular. It is a pretty solid place though. read more

What a hidden gem!! I'm so glad my parents decided to take me here for dinner Saturday night. When we pulled up my first comment was, it's in a shopping center!! Of course, these usually end up being the best places to eat so I went in excited. The place is very small inside and reminds me of a hole in the wall place you'd find in Brooklyn. You seat yourself and grab a menu from the counter....if my parents weren't with me, I probably would've just stood there gawking and confused. They have a wide selection of food and everything is served family style. The prices....insanely cheap!! Check out the specials they have on the board too, they're a little higher priced, breaking the bank at around $13 each (jokes). They have soda you can grab out of the fridge and there's also self serve hot tea at the ready. We ordered noodles, rice, soup, dumplings and the special Mongolian duck...plus pad Thai noodles to take home to my sister, and our check was $57! Insaneee. Oh right, the food...insanely tasted amazing! The soup was fresh and the shrimp in the fried rice was plentiful and big. The duck wasn't greasy and the dumplings had great flavor. Not too salty either. They do takeout, which a lot of people did throughout the night. They get pretty busy and they only have a certain amount of tables so make sure you get there early. read more

Over the past 14 months my family and I have been to Shanghai Bun over 30 times. The place is small but clean. The environment is cold in the winter and stuffy in the summer. We no longer eat in as my wife can no longer tolerate how rude the staff is. My wife is offended how differently the Chinese customers were treated as apposed to the non-Chinese. Me personally I couldn't care less. I come back for the food not the service. The peeking pork is my favorite dish. I also love the pork fried dumplings, various dumpling soups, and my daughter loves the eggplant with chicken dish. read more

I have been eating at this place for nearly 10 years, and just recently ate my first meal here since I started working. I missed it a lot. You can't get that Taiwanese style dishes at a lot of Chinese restaurants, and this place definitely has the right idea. Although there was a change in ownership a couple years ago and the food suffered a little, the place got a little cleaner and better tables and chairs. You basically still order at the counter and someone will bring you your food, while you get tea, utensils at a nearby counter. The food is pretty inexpensive overall. You can get a meal for yourself for around $7-10. I would stick to the noodle dishes. Minced pork and tofu in a chili paste noodles, noodles w/peanut sauce, and noodle soups are all good bets. This place also has xiao long bao that is the best (and only?) place to get them around the area. I definitely recommend this place to anyone new or old in the area. read more

I would have given this place 4 stars for the food. Needless to say, the food is comfortingly good. However, I give it 0 stars for the service as the service really sucks. I will, therefore, average it out to 2 stars. I've been to many Chinese restaurants and typically Chinese restaurants are not well known for the service. But this place takes the cake...For my take out service, here is what i experienced...While in the middle of taking my order, the person picks up the phone and starts to take the order from the person on the phone, making me wait...not so much as to tell the person on the phone to "hold, please". Next, when I asked for an extra pack of condiment, the person reluctantly gave me one with a snicker, as if to say "one is not enough?", when I ordered 3 entrees. Finally, when asked for utensils, she again reluctantly but threw in chopsticks, forks and spoons in the bag. You think a friendly smile, a plastic fork or a throw away pair of chopsticks to use to eat my food are too much to ask for? Several words come to mind...rude, cheap, disrespectful. If you are here for the food and food only, and overlook the service or don't care how rudely and disrespectful to how you're treated, then you've come to the right place. Otherwise, there are plenty of restaurants where you get decent food without the obnoxious behaviors of the staff. read more

I came to this place because it doesn't look like the stereotypical "Americanized" Chinese food, that I see everywhere else. I ordered the steamed pork buns, beef noodles in sha cha sauce and spicy beef noodle soup. I was very impressed with the meal overall. The soup didn't have too much heat which is good because it has excellent flavor. Probably my favorite thing about my meal was definitely the noodles. Probably some of the best Chinese noodles I've ever had. The portions were big too. Enough to feed me for lunch and dinner. I'll definitely comeback and explore this menu some more. read more
