Good Chinese food is hard to come by in this area, but we lucked up and found some of the best Chinese food we've ever tasted. After a bit of searching, we discovered that Shanghai is owned by the same guy who owns Master Joe's, so we figured it would be good, but we were still taken aback by how delicious it was! We started with the black pearl roll. For our entrees, I ordered the ginger chicken and my hubs ordered Mongolian beef. Both were phenomenal and the portions were huge. I ate about half of mine and brought the rest home to my son, who still couldn't finish the other half. The place is fairly small and the decor is modern and trendy. The prices were on par with any other Asian food in the area. The service was exceptional. From here on out, this will be our go-to for Chinese food. read more

Been here a few times and the food is usually good, not amazing but good. Sushi and entrees both are solid. 3/5 stars is for the bad service that seems to be also consistent. Shanghai Cottage has become our go to when looking for good Asian food and sushi. We have been here many-a-times and have never left disappointed! The service is always good, the servers are always pleasant, and the place is always clean. I dig the ambiance! The menu is isn't overwhelming- they have a good selection of Asian inspired dishes and a good-sized Sushi menu that is easy to navigate. We often order take out from here, even though it is one of the furthest options from our house. The food is always fresh and robust with flavor. The General Tso's Chicken is my jam! I got a gift card for Shanghai cottage for Christmas I don't usually go there I ordered the sushi & sashimi platter and my fiancé got sesame chicken and fried rice the fried rice was like white rise they mixed soy sauce in the chicken was mid and my sushi & sashimi was not sushi grade fish it was as if I made the meal at home with Sam's club frozen fish don't go there it's a waste of money and a disgrace to my favorite foods. read more

Man oh man I did not want to write this review! In the age of COVID, etc we just want to go out and have the best time possible and not look for a reason to complain, BUT after sleeping on this I have to get this out. My wife and I have visited this restaurant multiple times over the past several years. In an area that is not know for good Chinese food this place has usually satisfied our fix well enough. Our last experience was SO BAD that I could not let this go. First, I will say that we have lived overseas in Asia for nearly eight years off and on and that my wife is first generation Chinese born in the U.S. and has actually ran a Chinese restaurant before. I'll break this down dish by dish and then talk about the service overall: Appetizer: Cha Siu BBQ Pork: Salty as all get out and did not come with any sauces. Overcooked and basically came across as small pieces of deep fried leather. Entrees: Ma Po Tofu: Not bad but lacked any flavor and had very little gravy. We just ate this as a leftover tonight and, unlike most Chinese leftovers, it didn't get any better. Peking Duck: This dish was burnt burnt burnt! It was sooo black and dry. Not to mention it was served with spring roll skins instead of steamed bao. This is basically the same as eating Ramen noodles without cooking them first. Try eating dry burnt duck wrapped in a dry raw spring roll wrapper... I took one bite and gave the rest to my Wife. This dish was over $20.00 and a huge ripoff! We only ate that one small part and contemplated not even taking the leftover home because it was so bad! Pineapple Fried Rice: I have had fried rice all over the world and stateside... this was the WORST fried rice I have ever had in my life. It was served in a hollowed out pineapple half, which sounds okay at first. The problem is it was covered with cheese. Not just any cheese though, BURNT cheese. I tried eating it but just couldn't. I even tried the burnt/blackened cheese thinking, 'hey' maybe there's a method to their madness, maybe it's caramelized or something like that. NO, it was disgusting! It tasted exactly like what it looked like, BURNT cheese. In fact, this wasn't 'Fried Rice' at all, it was baked until it was 'dry as sand' rice. It was, without a doubt the WORST Fried Rice we have ever tased anywhere on this Planet of ours! Sweet and Sour Chicken: Watered down Sweet and Sour sauce with small bits of chicken inside thick breading. Flavor was 'okay' but did not come close to making up for any of the other terrible dishes! Sushi: Gotta give credit where it is due, we had the Titanic Roll and Tuna Roll and were happy with both. Service: The waitress was nice (we found out later when we asked that she was also in some kind of managerial role) however, as much as we tried to remain nice and also let her know how terrible everything was she just sort of went with it. Basically, she wasn't going to make any real effort to make the customer happy unless we insisted on some type of remedy. We were not trying to get anything off of our bill but c'mon, these dishes were so bad it was a no brainer. It was only after I explained that the Fried Rice was the worst we ever had IN OUR LIVES that she sort of looked at us blankly and said, 'do you want me to take it off?' No kidding! Like I opened with, we were trying to have a good time, and make other people's night good too, but it was so terrible it was hard to keep calm. We could have probably pushed and got the burnt Duck off our bill too, but honestly we shouldn't have had to. That Duck was so burnt it NEVER should have been taken to a table, or us been given the lousy excuse we got... 'that's how we always serve it.' That's just BS. In fact, the only reason we took any leftovers home at all is because 1) the dishes were so expensive, and 2) maybe we could somehow salvage them at home by doctoring them up. Billing: We paid cash but you have to pay an extra service charge to use a credit/debit card. This is 2020 and this is purely unsat! This just means the owner is too cheap to pay for this service and would rather pass this expense along to the customers. Super-tacky! Before you take any of this as us just being upset customers that didn't get horrible food taken off our bill, we still gave a 22% tip on top of an $86.00 bill for bad food and lethargic service, mainly because the waitress was a military spouse. They had limited indoor seating b/c of the corona virus, but my wife and I went because we've found it be one of the best if not the best with Asian food in northwestern Baldwin County. There are a couple of better known places that I won't name, but they seem to have inexperienced younger people making the food now. That can be fine, but you can tell the experience at Shanghai Cottage--fresh ingredients, homemade soy sauce, and cooked to order. FIRST OF ALL THE DIRECTIONS ON YELP ARE WRONG. If you decide to come here make sure that you don't follow those directions. If you manually type the address in then you will find the right location. So I drove an extra 40 minutes because the directions were wrong on the Yelp website. When I finally did get to the restaurant I showed them that the address link was bad on the maps and was told that it was right. It clearly showed as the wrong direction. After they realized it showed the wrong direction I was told it was wrong because I have an old phone. I actually have a brand new recently updated Iphone 6. The only reason I was telling them the address was wrong was to help them out and hopefully prevent other people from doing the same thing I did. So after getting a poor / disrespectful response I decided to simply pay for my food and leave. The miso soup was ok. The pork and pineapple and the chargrilled bbq pork appetizer were mediocre at best. The meat was more fat then meat. In fact several of the pieces were only fat. The rice was dry and hard. Granted I came pretty late in the day. It tasted as if this food had been cooked for dinner and then sold to me 4 hours later. I would have been happier spending that $24 at a fast food Chinese place then this restaurant. I've heard that this was the best Chinese restaurant around town. I haven't tried much around this town, but it was pretty good. Their ginger dressing on the salad was amazing ($3.75) the price isn't to bad for a side salad. I also got the wonton soup which was good ($2.50/ Cup). For our main entree we got the sweet and sour chicken with a side of fried rice. ($11.95) I'd have to say the taste wasn't much different from any other sweet and sour chicken I've ever eaten at a Chinese restaurant. We tend to visit here rather than Master Joe's because it seems to not have as long of a wait. We live in Mobile but skip all of the Sushi restaurants on our side of the bay and drive to Fairhope. I'm a semi-pro sushi critic; with sushi experiences ranging all over the world from Hawaii to the South. I know good quality sushi grade fish from cheaply bought, falsely dyed fish. Let me just tell you, the sushi here is by far the best in the South East that I have ever had, and top 10 that I have ever consumed period. The quality of fish here, specifically the Akami (tuna cut), is excellent considering it is imported. The service is a solid 4/5, and the sushi chefs are very entertaining and great at suggesting meals. Obviously this isn't Sushi Yoshitake of Japan, but it's leaps and bounds greater than Ichibans and Styx. It's worth the moderate price tag hands down, but then again, I've eaten Omikase courses that have ran upwards of $400. read more

My hubby and I ate at SC tonight and thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The shrimp egg rolls and crab Rangoon did not disappoint! Our sweet and sour chicken and General Tsao's chicken were the best Typical Chinese food we've had in years. I could have used a bit more sweet and sour sauce, but that was a minor concern. The biggest fault we had was the layout of the restaurant. It was SO loud and we heard every word at both neighbors' tables. Def not a kid friendly or quiet romantic place! The line was out the door.
