An interesting place for sure with a large octopus on the wall and decorated for Easter. We arrived early and were seated right away. We had a very friendly waitress that timed our meal perfectly. We started with the gyoza a pork dumpling. The dumpling itself was taaty and prepared well however a theme emerged here, the sauce was very sweet. Even our house salad with ginger dressing was sweet. The greens were cold and fresh. Next we both had the sea bass entree with mixed vegetables and fried rice. The fish was cooked perfectly but again, the sauce that covered the fish was sweet. This may be the style here and while the food was cooked well it was overshadowed in both our opinions by the sweetness of every dish. Perhaps the sushi was the way to go. Best Sushi Ever! There's not a lot of things I take seriously, but I take sushi seriously. Being from Malibu and a world traveler, I never thought I would have some of the BEST sushi of my life in a small Alabama town!!! Imagine the shock when the delectable fresh concoctions were entering my mouth one after the next! We ate here so many time when we lived in Daphne, but that was years ago. We decided to drive over for date night because they have amazing sushi and drinks. Usually, there is a long wait because it's a small place, but worth the wait for sure. However tonight, we got lucky and were immediately seated at the sushi bar. Husband got the seasonal mule (blueberry) and I got the Raspberry Collins, which is ahhhhmazing. We watched them make our sushi, and everyone else's, thanks to the great seats we got. It's so cool to watch them create the rolls. They look so much better in person than the photos show, but the important part is the taste. You won't get any better than Master Joes. I got the Russian Revolution with no jalapeños and we shared a sushi pizza. (Seriously, TRY IT.) service was excellent and the vibe is always so nice. First visit here and it's a cozy and hip little joint. I started with a Kyuri salad and it was excellent. Next I had a Futomaki roll (7.95) and a Titantic roll (14.95). The Futomaki was the essence of freshness and was both savory & sweet. The Titanic roll was a bit more elaborate and had some tempura shrimp. The side of ginger was amazing! A very small spot that picks a big flavor punch. They have a wide variety of rolls that are fresh and tasty. I ordered a salmon and avocado roll as well as the rock n roll which has eel. I'm a huge fresh, sushi fan and I've been told (repeatedly) that Master Joe's has the best sushi in the 251 area (and I'd already given that title to Chuck's Fish in Mobile), so I took to my navigation to find out. Well, the rumors are true and clearly the word's out as there was a 15 minute wait for a party of 1 (me) to sit at the bar. Was it worth the wait? ABSOLUTELY, and Tiffany and the crew took great care of me! I didn't want to admit it, but Master Joe's has a slight edge. The sushi is friggin' amazing! Master Joe's is our usual date night place in Fairhope! The food is always very fresh and doesn't feel heavy or unhealthy. Once you eat here it will be hard to eat sushi or hibachi anywhere else! They are also very accommodating. They will let you substitute or add ingredients to a roll or replace the seaweed wrap with soy paper if you don't like seaweed. I came into Master Joes with high expectations because of previous reviews. I actually was a bit disappointed. My daughter loves sushi and was excited about eating here on our day out together. The restaurant was ice and clean. Servers were delightful. It was the food that was disappointing. I got the lunch special for $18.95 where you pick three rolls. I got California, Philly and shrimp tempura. The California and Philly were ok. Nothing special but the shrimp tempura was bad. The fried shrimp had to have been either cooked the day before or several hours earlier because the batter on the outside was rubbery and the shrimp was cold on the inside. Not a fresh taste at all or crispy. If I'm paying that much for a lunch then I want fresh please. My daughter got the Oceans 11. It was ok but the white fish on top was also not fresh. Very disappointed. We decided that will be our first and only time we go. read more
