Just picked up an order of 3 items. When I arrived my order should have been ready for at least 5-7 minutes. Ended waiting another 10 minutes or more for it. I've seen this place whenever I went to do my Chinese grocery, as it is right next door, but never wandered in. Feeling hungry on a Friday afternoon and craving Chinese food I looked around for lunch specials and this one popped up. The place is small, with a menu of items they offer, however with the price of things fluctuating so much, the prices were all crossed out. I decided to order the Shrimp with Mango that came with vegetable friend rice and Hot and Sour soup, and I order Chicken Lo Mein, which also came with Vegetable fried rice. I found that to be a strange combo, as I had never seen them mixed together. One the positives: The Hot and Sour Soup and he Shrimp with Mango was good On the Meh side, The Chicken Lo Mein was pretty ordinary and lacked flavor. If you miss webpages that seem counter-inuitive and require constant attention to make sure nothing goes wrong requiring you to re-enter everything. They have that! It's remarkable that in 2025 with a million apps that make food ordering easy, this restaurant stays afloat with an interface that feels like repeatedly kicking yourself in the nuts while simultaneously trying to figure out how something breaded and deep fried can avoid being crispy. To be honest when I am feeling like a complete 90s restaurant experience. I will choose subway everytime, it's essentially unchanged from the late 90s in every way but it doesn't force you to use some ridiculous website created by their nephew to order a sandwich. read more

Our family has ordered from here for years, and I love that they now offer online ordering (as it can be hard getting through on the phone during peak hours). There have been a few instances where the order isn't ready by the time given through online ordering, but it's never more than an additional 5 minutes. Our favorites: pad thai with chicken (which is indeed spicy, but what isn't advertised is carrots are part of the ingredients, which could be a bit too strong of a taste for some), General Tso's Chicken, fried wontons (crab meat cheese), and the fried dumplings. The packaging may seem small, especially with the noodle and chicken dishes, but they do pack plenty of food into the container which can be enough for a 2nd meal. Parking can be hit or miss, again at peak times, as the parking shares with other businesses in the area, so you may have to circle the lot or if you have a passenger have them pick up the order. read more

I don't know why we haven't gone back to this place but the food was way better than the other spots we've frequented. The egg foo young Whi is not listed on the menu was so fluffy and chock full of add ons- delicious. My ginger glazed chicken and shrimp was full tray with very good veggies, and chicken and shrimp. I have an existential question. Why are all Americanized Chinese takeout joints in CT some kind of hybrid Southeast Asian fusion place? Why not just call a spade a spade? Why call yourself Shanghai Gourmet and give me Pan Asian Confusion? I came here expecting to find chicken with broccoli and it wasn't an option - which turned out to be a good thing because I said what the heck let's just go with it. Hubby ordered his standard General Tso's and I got the Chicken with Thai Basil. Pieces of chicken breast in the General Tso's were large but not dry, so big points for that. I liked that it wasn't swimming in an oily sauce either, but just enough to cover the chicken nicely. The chicken with Thai basil was bomb! So good. Again, not swimming in oil and grease so another big plus for me. Veggies were perfectly cooked, nothing was mushy (and mine has zucchini in it, which usually gets mushy by the time I make it home from any takeout spot). I'm making my dish stretch for 2 lunches. We will definitely be back. Not 5 stars because I haven't found a place that serves what I can get in NYC Chinatown :/ read more

I was craving veggies and shrimp so I ordered these two dishes to see which I liked more. String bean garlic sauce with prawns was very good, with lots of fresh green beans and tasty prawns or shrimp (they looked the same in both dishes so I'm assuming both dishes had the same kind of shrimp even though one was called prawns and one shrimp). The wok grilled garlic shrimp was also good, with a standard veggie medley. I think I preferred the the first dish better but ended up mixing the two together. read more

To the people saying that it's some of the best Chinese food in CT and NY, they need to go explore more of NYC. But that said, this is my go to Chinese spot in Norwalk. I'm not saying it's amazing or life changing or anything like that. Just that it's good cheap Chinese food. I've never eaten there as it is super small and not all that nice. I'll just call in an order and they'll say 10-15 minutes. I'll get there in 8 and it's ready almost every time. Lunch specials less than $10(FYI, prices are a little higher than what the pictures of the menu leads you to think). Lo Mein is great. Same with the Thai Curry. Chicken with mixed veggies in brown sauce is pretty good too. I tend to stick with those 3, but everything I've tried has been above the average cheap Chinese food. I'll be back, again and again, but if I'm traveling to a major city I won't be eating this the day before I go as I know I'll find something better in D.C., Philly, NYC, etc.... read more

Here's another "don't judge a book by its cover" kinda place. The location is a strip mall and it's takeout only right now. The interior is barebones so when dining in, don't expect much on that account. But the food is really the star here. Much better than most area Chinese takeout places and many that have sit down. We had Shanghai WonTon soup - a great amount of veggies and five dumplings (could have used a little more filling), Moo Shu Pork - very good really and the chicken and shrimp in ginger sauce - the standout. First experience ordering from Shanghai Gourmet and it will be my last. I'm so confused by the positive reviews. We ordered from DoorDash and they sent one of us the wrong item. When we called they told us to ask for a refund on DoorDash and that if we wanted them to give us the correct item we'd need to pick it up, pay again and bring them back the incorrect order. When my boyfriend forgot to bring the incorrect item back, she almost didn't give him our new order. Eggplant could've been cooked just a bit longer as it was between raw and hard/chewy and tender/soft. Sauce was the right amount without sitting in a pool of oil. I don't remember much about my meal here 5-6 years ago except that it was bad, the sauce leaked all over and was too oily. Fast forward to the wonderful year of 2020 and the meal still leaked with sauce (even though they are thoughtful and wrapped it in plastic), but it was....delicious! Shanghai Gourmet is a great place for Chinese food. It's a small space with limited seating. Most people came in and out ordering takeout. However, our family actually sat down to eat dinner here. The restaurant is neat, clean, and nicely decorated. Service was fast, and our food arrived in less than 10 minutes. The lady serving food was kind and welcoming. The food satisfied my hunger. The beef tasted especially authentic and savory. My only complaint would be that lack of fortune cookies was disappointing, so I had to deduct a star. For the area (suburbs of CT) this place offers solid lunch specials, generous portions at a reasonable price! Ordered the string beans with pork and egg drop soup with white rice. Son loved it although a bit spicy. Returned the next day for same entree/soup but tried the veggie fried rice as a side and requested less spicy. Was terrific also!
