I love cream cheese wontons - WITHOUT CRAB in them! This place has great ones. I think they add a little pepper. Yummy! Aside from the cream cheese wontons, they have great appetizers, entrees, and side dishes too! I love the pork fried rice, sweet & sour chicken, and mongolian beef dishes. The egg rolls are great, as are the pot stickers. The meat is always fresh, high quality, and tender. I've had too many experiences with Chinese food and meat that looks like it's only a step above dog-food quality. Tried this place for the first time thinking it would provide some variety to our usual place. We had 4 different dishes. The honey walnut shrimp was very good. We had two chicken dishes and the chicken was over cooked and a little chewy. I think we are going back to our usual chinese place. read more

We tried this restaurant for the first time today. I tried sweet and sour shrimp. What I got was fried shrimp with a few raw and cold slices of green pepper, onion and pineapple on the side and a bowl of sweet and sour sauce. Not what I was expecting or wanting. The waitress was kind enough to let me order something else. I ordered shrimp with snow peas which was good but not anything special. My husband had general chicken with chicken chow mein. He said the chicken was dry and chewy with lots of fat and the chow mein was tasteless. We did like their fried rice and egg drop soup. We might try one more time and order different items but our first experience was not good. read more

Shanghai has the BEST Honey Walnut Shrimp that I have ever tasted. I crave this creamy goodness. The shrimp is fresh and plump, the sauce - just the right amount of tang and sweetness and the crispy rice stringy things with the honey-coated walnuts are to die for...over the pork fried rice...so delicious. My mouth is watering just thinking about this awesome dish. And they prepare it so fast! I have been going to Shanghai for over 12 years now and I love it. The food is usually "Okay" they cannot however cook sesame chicken without burning it.. order it the last 5 or 6 Times and 95% of the time it's cooked to $HIT. My mother in law and husband didn't like their food either. We will be going back to El Dorado Hills for Fortune Gardens. It blows this place away. Had takeout from Shanghai Restaurant tonight. I'd read a lot of outstanding reviews -- far more than the bad ones. I'm sorry, but I can't agree with the 5 stars people seem to give it. We had Walnut Shrimp and Sesame Chicken, both of which got raves from previous Yelpers In this case, not so much. The egg rolls tasted like they'd been fried in old grease heading toward rancid. The dipping sauce just plain didn't taste good. (I am constantly amazed that these sauces have to be red -- there's a wonderful Chinese place in Fresno that didn't make theirs red, and it was delicious.) The shrimp were sort of okay, but nothing special, and lacked sauce. The sesame chicken was very bland and dry. I bit down on a couple of pieces of cartilage in my serving. So far that's two Chinese places in Cameron Park that I don't think I'll visit again, China City being the other one. On the other hand, the prices are reasonable, parking is easy, and the wait staff is great -- at both places. Both restaurants were busy when I went in, so they are liked by quite a few locals and tourists. I guess I'll just have to keep trying. read more

We have lived in El Dorado Hills for coming up on 26 years now. My family (lucky for us) found Shanghai over twenty years ago and we LOVE it!! The food is wonderful, service is always outstanding (they always remember everyone in our family) and we have tried everything on the menu. EXCELLENT. Our "kids" our 32 and 28 now and this is where we always want to go to dinner for our birthdays or special times (like when my Daughter comes into town now that she lives out of state) and my Son who still lives close to us. It's "our" special restaurant. Our favorite is Sesame Chicken, any of their fried rice's (non which are greasy), Orange Chicken, my Daughter's favorite broccoli beef, Won Ton soup, Pot stickers and I love anything which has seafood in it. We have see a long of cheese places come and go, tried many others and I travel a lot and THIS place does it the best. read more

Was impressed by their service and smiles and warm welcome! Lunch special ended at 3 but combos went until 4. Egg flower soup tasted like just egg, hot n sour was watered down, hot tea was good. Cheese wontons crispy deelish. Wasn't impressed by orange chicken or general chicken I was actually disappointed! :( big pieces of chicken in the chow mein! I have eaten at Shanghai Restaurant several times and the thing that I notice about it is the lack of consistency with the food. I have had some great meals here. Then, when I finally talked my wife into coming with me, we had a meal that was even below supermarket take-out standards. When Shanghai is on their game, their food is quite good. The smells as I walk by is always what lures me into Shanghai. However I never know what I'm going to get when I go in. Unfortunately my wife won't return to Shanghai since she got hooked on nearby China City. So, with that, I must bid Shanghai a sad farewell. Don't worry Shanghai, I'll try to sneak back in when my wife is at work...and hopefully you will reward me with one of the great meals that I know you are capable of making. read more

You just can't go wrong with the sesame chicken! The recipe has changed over the years but it's still the best around! I don't think they've changed the decor since it opened in the 90's but I guess you don't fix what isn't broken right? Also the portions are great and the lunch deal is a bargain! read more

We have been going to Shanghai restaurant for quite awhile. We ordered take out the other night. When we got home the sesame chicken and broccoli beef were over cooked and hard to chew. We returned and asker for two new entrees. The owner/cook would not remake the food, because according to him he never over cooks his food. I've been a China City fan and patron years, but feel the quality standards are not as high as they used to be, so I tried Shanghai with high hopes that it would become my new favorite. The soups are much more flavorful and would get a 5 star. Sweet and Sour Pork 4.5 stars because you may need to ask for extra sauce on the side, but very good. Although not a fan of China City's Chow Mein, it ranks much higher than Shanghai's. Over all, the biggest problem with Shanghai's, lack of flavor on all dishes, and barely any sauce which is where flavor is sometimes found. Bell peppers were large chunks and raw. I could remove them and reuse in another dish raw. Shanghai's will be my to go place for soups, and sweet and sour pork. Otherwise in comparison to China City, I guess it just depends on which side of the freeway you live. Lol read more

I moved from Carmichael a year ago, and we had the perfect Chinese restaurant there. Since moving to Shingle Springs, we've struggled to find one to replace it. Every Chinese restaurant just seemed to be a disappointment. However last weekend we decided to try Shanghai....and we were amazed. There was absolutely nothing bad about them. Everything from the soup to the rice to the tea was amazing. I normally don't even get fried rice, but this time I did and I don't regret it at all. The Sesame chicken was different than any other I've had and that is in a very good way. We also had the honey walnut prawns, which are just magically delicious, and the wonderful cheese wontons. We had tons of left overs and they were just as good the next day. It's only been a few days since I've been there but I'm already craving some more. read more

Been coming here off and on for the last 12 yrs. They have GREAT Wor Wonton soup that you can't beat. Lot's of veggies, shrimp, chicken, pork, it's a meal in itself and very reasonably priced! They have yummy lunch specials as well. The staff have always been friendly and helpful, making sure I am enjoying what I am eating, as well as, have what I need (extra napkins, spoons, more water, etc...). This is the ONLY Chinese restaurant I will go to when I want good Chinese food. The only other place is up in Placerville, when I get up there which is "few and far" between visits. read more

I like the place and it's not so busy, every time I go there. Which is good, I like a peace and quiet atmosphere while I enjoy some nice Chinese food. The last time I visited, I tried their sesame chicken and it was really good. The hot tea they serve is great. I'm a big fan of tea, hot or cold, so it's a plus for me. Their soup is good, not sure what it was. I think it was egg foo young soup, if I remember correctly. Soup is also another plus if it's good and it's an Asian thing for me, haha. Ordered "Neptunes Delight" which was stir fried chicken, beef and BBQ pork with tons of veggies in a spicy sauce. The protein and veggies tasted fresh. While the water and rice were good, the chicken and beef could not be cut with a fork and was very dry. We should have told the waitress at the beginning. We did tell them after trying to finish a quarter of it and she said " that's the way we cook it here, and next time you can request it less done" I said there won't be a next time. read more

This is, by far, the most miserable example of Chinese take out food. Generally you can count on getting decent food at many Chinese restaurants in Northern California. Great for lunch. Very generous portions and pretty good food. Service is good and atmosphere is pleasant, though the seating could be updated some to make it a bit more comfortable.
