We've been coming to Shangri-La for years now, and it's become one of our go-to spots for Chinese food. Over time, we've seen two different owners -- the first one was okay, but the current owner has really stepped it up. The food now is so much better -- fresh, flavorful, and just really well done. You can tell it's the real deal. I know people have different tastes, so reviews can be all over the place, but personally, we've never had a bad experience here. Everything we've ordered has always been fresh, and we've never had any issues. I usually do pick-up, but they do offer delivery too, which is nice to have as an option. The menu is colorful and easy to read, and I noticed dine-in is now open again -- great if you feel like sitting down and eating there instead of taking it home. Also, there are some Chinese signs with writing around the door -- I was curious and translated them once, and they were really sweet. Just adds a nice touch to the place. The house was on quarantine because of covid, but we could all still taste. After the first week I decided to check what delivery options were available and this place popped up. It's no exaggeration to say eating this delivery was the happiest I'd been since our quarantine. The food was delivered hot and scrumptious. They even wrote a cute message on the boxes about having a happy holiday and to feel better. They left a message on my phone when they dropped it off so I could get it quickly. My only suggestion is for the online ordering process, no big deal, but it would be nice to have order specifying options, like no water chestnuts or to add bean sprouts. This little hole in the wall is tucked back from the street and easily overlooked as across the street the snack shack has all the bright colors & flashing lights of a disco. Do not let the unassuming front fool you. Yes its dated & kitsch, but that's also the charm of the place. They currently don't do dine in, but there's a decent lobby with a tiny free library (nice touch) and a comfy bench to wait for your food. You won't wait long. I appreciate all the steps they are taking to keep rheir staff & customers safe. The food is well flavored but not cloying sticky sweet like a mall stall or fast food Chinese. It's fresh, filled with lots of meat & vegetables. They don't skimp & overdo the noodles or rice. Really big portions. It's at least 2-3 meals worth. We got the dumplings to start which mighr have been my favorite part. They were full of tasty filling, easy to eat without the dopping sauce. But oh that sauce. That. Sauce. It even makes the steamed broccoli they serve with it sing. I got the house lo mein & my husband ordered chow mein. They are different sauces, but the dishes were both light, packed full in the container, and full of the various proteins & veg. I saw this restaurant had pretty good reviews; so I had confidence in calling and ordering take out for six people in my office. Our order consisted of D19, L18, L22, L24, and two chicken lunch plates of some sort. When I arrived, I saw a worn sign on the front door that indicated no dine-in option since April. Not sure what year that was from. There are incredibly dirty plastic construction curtains hanging on both sides of the register blocking off the kitchen and dining area. This was red flag number 1. The service on the phone and in person was friendly. When I returned to my office with our food, we noticed the sauce in each container was the same color for every dish. Given that some of us ordered chicken and others ordered pork or steak, this should have been red flag number 2. Everyone took their order in our respective offices and reconvened about an hour later. One lady said her sesame chicken was edible but not enjoyable. Everyone else's lunch was reported as inedible. After a few bites, five of us threw our lunches away. The most edible item was the floppy egg roll; but even that was gray and rather gross on the inside. My staff discussed and agreed that anyone who left a positive review for Shangrila has incredibly poor standards for food or perhaps they were paid to leave such information. I set the bar pretty low when it comes to food for myself; but this was even below my standards. It's a shame. We were really hoping to find the best go-to Chinese restaurant. So I was in the mood for some Chinese and it was late, I thought I'd try this place. I ordered the almond chicken, and egg drop soup, and sweet n sour chicken. The drive back to my house was about 15 minutes. Once I got home and sat down to enjoy my meal...... I opened my almond chicken.... And the first thing I see is a damn hair stuck to a piece of chicken. I was hungry and angry that I just wasted time and money on this trash. I called them to let them know and asked if I could get a refund since they were closing soon. They said the I my way I could get a Fkn refund was to bring the plate back for "proof". I was offended at the Fkn audacity! I clearly lost my appetite and did not want to eat the soup either. I also put that back in the bag and told them that I would bring it back to tomorrow since they didn't believe me. Once I took it back they said, they wanted to see the hair. This is one of the delivery restaurants recommended by our hotel while we were staying in San Antonio. We were impressed with the menu selections, which has some items that are vegetarian and vegan. Since a lot of Chinese dishes have sauces that are not vegan, I was able to ask a lot of question while on the phone ordering and it was not a problem for them. The person on the phone even provided some suggestions on how to order specific dishes as "steamed" instead of with sauce, which is even healthier. Delivery driver was very helpful with meeting me with our delivery, once he arrived. I usually like Lemon Chicken, but saw great reviews and photos of the Almond Chicken. The photos show a HUGE amount of whole almonds, so I decided I'd have the Almond Chicken. I also ordered shrimp toast, just to get my order over $15. The shrimp toast was almost burnt. I'm hungry so I decide no big deal. The Almond Chicken though, should've just been call Chicken. There were no whole almonds, just about a teaspoon of shaved almonds on the top. I didn't want just Chicken, I was in it for the almonds. 5 stars for the food. They have great tasting quality food . The variety in recipes are AMAZING . You can tell the quality of their ingredients . If I had experienced something like others then I would probably give it less stars but for over 10 years we have been eating here we have never experienced it. They are always so BUSY and get your orders OUT QUICKLY maybe a hair or other things get in?? IDK , It's never happened to me . TG... My favs are chicken or shrimp chop suey, fried rice options, all GOOD. Lemon chicken & sweet and sour always crunchy if eaten right away . Since many of the options are fried , the grease/ oil never tastes reused or old like other places . Nice that they were open on Christmas Day with a Christmas special. The service was nice and friendly... The food is ok I really did not like the white rice it was over cooked and wet, the fried rice looked the same way from what I saw on my parties plate. Let customers check their account, and exercise just a little patience. If you order online and try to pay, they're quick to get defensive. I didn't mind paying, I just wanted to make sure it didn't post to my account already. And when I tried to talk things out about their attitude, they just defended their attitude.
