I LOVE Dancer's Shape. I decided to come here last summer when I was looking for a different workout. My neighbor recommended it and I can't get enough of it. Sadly now that I am back in Houston, I can't find a barre workout as great as Dancer's Shape. My favorite part about the studio is the small classes. The instructors are able to go around class and help you readjust yourself. They also change up their routine so you are always getting a new workout. Every time I make a visit to Austin, I try my best to take a class . These classes are also not overpriced and everyone is extremely friendly. I have to say there isn't anything comparable in Houston. We need you here Dancer's Shape!! read more

I wrote an article about dance workouts in Austin and tried a few different places for research, and Dancers Shape was by far my favorite. So much so, that I went back after my initial class and have been going for almost a month now (about 4x/week on average). Jennifer and staff always make me feel right at home and know everyone by name - making it a comfortable and fun environment full of familiar faces. I have scoliosis, and not only have classes helped me gain muscle in my back and shoulders to help correct my posture, Jennifer has been there every step of the way offering modifications to certain poses and making sure I am comfortable. Class sizes vary but are small enough to make sure that instructors can easily give each student attention to make sure all steps of the exercises are being executed properly to avoid injury and help proper muscle development. Dancers Shape is my number one recommendation for anyone looking to get in shape. I am a runner (and in my off-season of half marathon training) and am so excited to see how these classes help improve my running once I start up training again! read more

I absolutely love Dancers Shape. I have tried many a workout over the last few years trying to find something that I liked (and that I actually wanted to go back to) and I've found it at this studio. I work full time and have two young children, and couldn't ever find something that worked with my crazy schedule and was close to my house. Then I stumbled on Dancers Shape, and I am not looking back! They have classes later in the evening that I can attend after I get my kids in bed. They also have classes at a variety of times on the weekend that are totally convenient. I have done the Graceful class (which I loved - my first barre class, it kicked my butt, I was sore for days!). I am also in love with the Yoga classes which I have done a few of now. They are a fun, hard, and relaxing (all at the same time) workout. The instructors are all fantastic and make time to give you feedback during the class and make sure you're doing ok. I love that the classes are small. Everyone is so nice at the studio. I can't say enough great things about this place - I love it! read more

I began taking Dancer's Shape classes in December when I won a free month long unlimited pass. It was quite a lucky break since I had been meaning to enroll anyway, after doing thorough research on multiple barre studios throughout Austin. Since December, I have already bought a new monthly pass which will soon expire and plan to buy another one very soon. Everything written by all the other reviews on yelp are 100% accurate. The Dancer's Shape facility is flawless. All the equipment are very clean and sanitary. And it is a huge help to not have to walk in with anything but a water bottle. Even towels and hairspray (if necessary) are provided. There are two big, spacious bathrooms, a beautiful sitting area, and a comfortable vanity area. However, that is not even the best part. Apart from the actual classes, my favorite thing about Dancer's Shape has to be the instructors. They are all extremely qualified with tons of certifications, but best of all they really care and love their job, which is always evident. If you ever have any questions, they encourage you to talk to them before or after class and are enthusiastic about helping you overcome those problems. There is a lot of personalized attention in the class itself to correct form, which is really helpful in the beginning as it can get confusing in trying to target those very specific muscle groups. While all the instructors are truly wonderful, Beverly and Kari are the two whose classes I identify with the most. Each instructor has a slightly different routine, and their patterns and flows from one exercise to another and the way they articulate the instructions really works for me. The actual class is hard. In the beginning, you should definitely go in prepared to come out with very sore muscles that will last a few days. However, it is a really good kind of sore. You know you worked your body to the max and that is a great feeling. Over time, which was about 7 classes for me, you will notice visible changes in your body, and that is what keeps the class so addicting. Because you can see the change, and that makes all the hard work worth it especially with such a supportive community. read more

WOW! I'm addicted. Dancers Shape is highly recommended! As a runner and former track athlete, I was constantly battling injuries, more so the past 2 years in my foot, ankle, hip, psoas, etc. When one issue would resolve, another flared up. After the first class, I felt taller, flexible, and although tired, just great! After attending 10 classes in one month, I noticed a significant difference in my core strength, posture, as well as strength and flexibility in my feet, toes and ankles. I'm confident I can run injury free as long as I continue to get my ass kicked in the Shape classes. It works EVERYTHING. Additionally, all the instructors are personable, knowledgeable, and friendly. They willingly answer any questions before and after class, and during class tweak your form. I love how there are women and men of all ages, shapes, sizes, and fitness levels, yet we are all in the same boat when we are burning away at the barre. I have worked out at Dancer's Shape for a month now and like the other positive reviewers, I can't say enough good things about the studio. The things I like: a great workout (I have taken Shape and Power so far) that is fun, challenging and had me seeing and feeling results after just a few sessions; professional staff that cares enough about you to correct your movements and make sure you are not hurting yourself with bad posture; friendly receptionists; clean and modern surroundings; great equipment; positive atmosphere all the way around. I've been attending classes at Dancer's Shape on and off for over a year. I LOVE the classes - I've only tried Graceful, Shape, and Yoga, but they're excellent with superb instruction. Emily M. is my favorite instructor, but all the ladies are great. They make everyone feel welcome here, and the workouts are top notch. My one complaint is about the cost. It's a popular place, where many of the classes are full (not necessarily overly crowded), and so they charge accordingly. I'd love to come more often, but I just can't afford to! Alas, I will come when I can because I love the toned-up feeling I get from the group classes, and Emily is one of the best yoga instructors I've ever had. read more

Just came back from my first class at Dancers Shape and I cannot WAIT to go back :) I went to the Shape Class. I signed up online and got my new member 2 for 22 deal. The staff was super friendly and gave me a quick tour before class started. The entire venue is very clean and tidy. As for the class. Oh man. Get ready to work every muscle group. Low impact movements but i was dripping in sweat when I left. The instructor was excellent. Seriously one of the best workouts specific to strength and toning I've ever had. Workouts include barre work, resistance balls, mat workouts and some free weights. Even if you're not a dancer, this is definitely the place to go for a good work out if you're looking for something different than your normal gym :) . read more

I've wanted to get into a workout routine, but didn't want to spend money on a gym I wouldn't use. I need to be in a class or I just give up. Like Dana, I am sad to see a muffin top and my clothes just don't fit right. If you are like me and need some motivation when you work out, this is the place to be!! The instructors are very friendly. The workouts don't kill you, but you really feel them the next day!! It is very cute and modern in the lobby (neat pics of Austin) and the changing room is clean and equipped with towels. The location in the 5030 building is great. You can get a coffee and Brew and Ballyhoo next door. Try and avoid Hat Creek and Dickey's BBQ if you can ( in same area). read more

Dancer shape is the best place for a barre class! The studio is super clean and modern and all the equipment is brand new. The instructors are the best part of this place! They play fun music and keep things exciting. I'm a beginner and they are super patient and constantly give corrections to my form without making me feel stupid. Jennifer, the owner, even sent me an email after my first couple of classes to check in with me. If you've never taken a barre class, they offer beginner classes. My favorite class is the cardio wild card. It's instructors choice, but think kick boxing mixed with barre; so amazing! It definitely keeps the heart pumping. I recommend this studio to anyone looking for a great workout that's fresh and fun. read more

Took my first Barre class today with Rachael H! The class and Rachael were awesome! I am used to high intensity workouts, so I was unsure if I would like Barre class, but I am 16 weeks pregnant, so I wanted to try something new! I am so glad I went! I am in Austin for work and a local friend and I found the place online. Everyone is so nice and Rachael is so knowledgable! I love this place, the classes and the instructors. It was much more challenging than I thought it would be.. The girls who teach the classes are extremely patient which I needed- I am not very coordinated.. After 7 Shape classes I already felt considerably stronger! I wish I could keep taking classes on a regular basis but they cost a little too much for my budget. But I plan on going back when I can! I went to Dancer's Shape for a year before moving out of town and I miss it SO MUCH. It's such a good workout and the instructors are tough but very kind. Dancer's Shape isn't a chain, so the instructors are free to change up the classes. No two classes are ever the same. Now that I don't live in Austin, I've been going to some chain barre classes and they are such a let down compared to Dancer's Shape. At places like Pure Barre the classes are always the same, the music is always the same, the instructors are militant and it's like a cult where you have to be wearing the same stupid socks and people look down on you if you don't have a giant rock on your finger. At Pure Barre today a teacher snapped at me for modifying an exercise. That would NEVER happen at Dancer's Shape, where as long as you don't get in anybody's way, you're ENCOURAGED to modify the exercises to suit the challenge your body needs. You know Dancer's Shape is legit because actual dancers teach and cross-train there. It's proof that you can have a killer workout in a relaxed environment. read more

To preface this review, I was invited by a friend to attend a class with her free of charge. The studio's signature class, Dancer's Shape, was taught by the owner herself, Jennifer McCamish. I'm currently training for the Austin Marathon in February, so working out has utterly consumed my life for the last 4 months. I've gone from being able to do 4 push-ups to 60+ push-ups and can run 3 and a half hours without stopping, yet this hour long class left me quivering like a jello jiggler. The studio is small, and our class was at capacity with about 12 people, which insured everyone a little personal attention from the instructor. With the grace and flexibility of a drunken hockey player, I certainly needed it. The philosophy of the class according to their website is the "Principle of overload and interval training." Although during the class, overload seems like an understatement. A warning: Don't let the 3 and 5 pound weights make you cocky. While the intervals are intense, they aren't too long, about 8-9 minutes, so you just push through and move on. The blasting music can really get you pumped up, and they definitely had some good music to work out too. I wasn't a big fan of the instructor wearing a microphone, which made her instructions echo a bit, and made it difficult to differentiate class instruction and her instruction to individuals. Overall the class is fast paced and intense. There's barre work, floor work, and mat work, alternating throughout the class, so you're constantly moving and doing something new. Definitely a great workout. Jennifer was very friendly and helpful from the moment I walked into the studio. I filled out a survey which included information about previous or current injuries. She saw that I tore my ACL a few years ago she walked me through several exercise modifications before class started. The class utilizes tons of equipment, and they have a very specific set-up in the studio, so she helped me get everything in place beforehand. While it is a bit pricey, they do offer student rates which a poor college student like me can always appreciate. So if you're one of those people that thinks dancing isn't really a sport, I don't want to hear it until you've tried a class or two. read more

Today was my first time trying out barre, and I did not leave disappointed. I went in feeling completely intimidated and afraid that I was going to feel out place. I was almost immediately put at ease. Of course I had a few Tina Fey moments, but hey it was my first time, and well, there were a couple of times when I should've been going right instead of left...but whatever. At the end of class, Emily the instructor, made sure to come up to me and told me how great I did in my first class. When I left I had a smile on my face, and more energy. The deal here is that, when you purchase your first class, you get a 2nd class for free. Great, I'll try it! A few days after my first class, I received an email asking how I enjoyed the class and informing me that my class credit was only valid for 7 days. (Still not sure if it was meant to expire 7 days from my 1st class, or 7 days from the email.) Since I was about to leave for a week-long roadtrip, I asked if we could make arrangements for an extension until the end of the month. The answer was no. They instead offered to extend the credit until the day of my return. Um, no thanks. I'll have a ton of laundry and housework to do that day. I dunno, Yelpers. Throwing in a free class seems like a cool offer, but in this case, the inflexibility was a turnoff. If they're this uptight about rules before they have my money, I don't want to know what they'd be like once I'm hooked. read more

I love this place! I registered for a full month with the new client special for $100, which I just completed last week. I usually attended 3-5 classes per week. The classes are one hour long and broken up into 10 minute increments which work different major muscle groups, although each increment still manages to work nearly all of your muscles. There is a lot of stretching in between sets, which is wonderful. I almost never left feeling so sore that I couldn't move, and I think the stretching is one of the main reasons why that was the case. The classes are like a fusion of ballet barre work, yoga, pilates, weights, and aerobic group exercise. I have taken classes with most of the instructors, but Toussaint and Carissa are definitely my favorite shape instructors. All of the instructors are very knowledgeable and always do a great job of correcting form, but I feel like these two really know their stuff. I've actually heard them refer to muscles by their anatomical names! I always take Carissa's class when I want a challenge. She really pushes you! My favorite class they offer is actually the yoga class. Michelle teaches this class, and I really like her teaching style. I've found a lot of yoga instructors to be way too "new age" to actually enjoy and benefit from yoga classes. Michelle balances spirituality and focus on proper form really well. Her class is the highlight of my week, and I never want to miss it. I wish she taught more than once a week. And now the part everyone is waiting for: results! Yes, I did see results in just one month! The first thing I noticed was an increase in flexibility and that was after only two weeks of class. I was able to sink a little lower in my stretches during each class. I only lost 1 or 2 pounds, but I do look leaner. My abs are more defined, and I think my butt is rounder and my thighs are a little slimmer. I also had nearly zero pain with this particular program. I usually encounter joint pain with whatever physical activity I do, but not here! These classes work a lot of little stabilizing muscles, which I think really helps reduce that pain. I will definitely be renewing my membership. I really enjoy the classes, the instructors, and the atmosphere. I do wish it wasn't so pricey, but it is an extra motivator. I do want to feel like I'm getting my money's worth, so I make sure to attend class several times per week. read more

I love this studio and continue to go here even though we've moved a bit farther out! There are class times for any schedule, and the instructors are great. You'll quickly figure out who matches your style (and musical tastes), and get into a groove. My one pet peeve is the class cancellation window ending six hours before it starts; I've forfeited a number of morning classes if I've waken up feeling sick. read more

Workout: 5 Stars As a fitness-aholic I truly loved my first class at Dancer's Shape. I felt like it was a tough workout and the class went by quickly. Normally, I don't like workouts that don't leave me breathless (have to feel my heart racing) and "Shape" not only focused on strength, but got your heartbeat up. I have one more class and I'm excited to see how the different types of classes vary. Price: 4 Stars I am definitely interested in buying a monthly pass, but my only concern is if I can really do this 4 times a week or more (which I think if you're going to spend over $150 on a monthly membership you NEED to do to make it worth it) and that in general $160 for a monthly membership somewhere is really expensive for me. read more

After 3 knee surgeries and chronic lower back pain, I have finally found a workout that I know I'm not going to further injure myself doing. It has been an uphill battle finding a challenging yet safe workout to replace all the things I can't do anymore like running and high impact cardio. I took advantage of the 2 classes for $22 deal, and I'm so glad I did! What an amazing workout! My first class was with the owner, Jennifer. She was very welcoming, upbeat, and just an all-around excellent fitness instructor. She really took me under her wing, knowing it was my first class, and helped me do the workout with proper form and appropriate modifications. My muscles were shaking during the class, but I was able to power through, and Jennifer was really motivating. Honestly, I could barely walk when I left the studio, and I was more sore than I've been in a long time for two days after class. It's amazing that such small, controlled movements can work the muscles so hard! I have been doing yoga every day for years, and thought I was in good shape, but the Dancers Shape workout really challenged all of my muscles (upper and lower body, plus abs) in ways I didn't think were possible. My second class with Corrie was equally as challenging and professionally-taught as the first. I'm really impressed with the high quality and consistency of the instruction at Dancers Shape. It's easy to feel intimidated, walking into a studio for the first time, having never done Barre before, but the staff was very welcoming and warm. The studio is clean and organized. I will definitely be returning. The cost is steep, but you get what you pay for. read more

Hands down the best instruction of all barre classes in town. Owner Jennifer runs a tight crew of the best teachers in town, and instructors Emily, Carissa and Mariclaire are real dancers with years of training -- ridiculous physical strength and deep knowledge to prove. I took my first barre class at Dancer's shape a few years ago to rehabilitate an old ankle and shoulder injury from years of extreme sports and fun outdoor adventures. I've learned so much from my classes here and have tried a bunch of barre studios since. I have yet to find one with impeccable instruction as I get at Dancer's Shape. Unfortunately, the price makes it prohibitive for me to go all the time but the teachings of these amazing instructors stays with me when I do my exercises at home. read more

I first heard about Dancers Shape through HerCampus at UT, and got to attend a month's worth of classes as a fitness blogger. Let me just say bottom line: this place is amazing! Never have I felt more flexible, more toned, and more challenged after a few weeks. The instructors are so polite, so nice, and so graceful. I've been to a range of classes, including some 8-am's with Mariclaire and many a shape class with Toussaint and Jennifer. They are SO warm and friendly, really good about making adjustments during the class, and the playlists rock. The shape routine is also generally the same fundamentals with some different routines to change it up, but the reps provide a good workout in a short hour. You can guarantee that your thighs will burn and that you will wake up the next morning in pain. Loved going multiple times a week because I feel in so much better shape. Awesome workout! read more

Been coming here for a while and I've been meaning to write a review but never got around to it. I recently took a shape class with Emily and was reminded why she is one of my favorite instructors. Emily very precisely told you exactly how to position yourself, and would even make corrections on body placement. She modeled the moves herself and made it easier to do it correctly. Generally speaking all the barre classes are challenging and truth be told if you come regularly your body will change. They also have spin classes where they play great music and you get a really good workout. It's so much fun time seems to fly by and you're done before you realize. I like the owner. She takes pride in her studio and works hard to make sure everything works, and that the instructors are well qualified. read more

This is by far the best place in Austin to take a barre fitness class. All of the instructors are great and extremely helpful in making sure you are aligned correctly so you don't injure yourself and you get the most benefit out of each exercise--and the work out is great! I always leave feeling better than when I walked in. Jennifer, the owner, is absolutely wonderful--she is always kind, welcoming and energetic and very knowledgeable in the field. Hey Guys. Dancers Shape classes are great for men too. I have been a typical gym rat for over thirty years and I have rarely had muscles as tired out as after a class. The basic premise of working with body weight has been used by trainers for ages. A friend brought me to the athletic conditioning class and I was hooked. Yes you are barefoot at a barre, a mat, or a pilates machine but so what. This counts as your cardio and your ab work out. The instructors have patience and will help you find movements you didn't know you could do. I recommend it for everyone who wants a change of pace, increased flexibility, balance and increased range of motion. read more

I absolutely love Dancers Shape and all the teachers. I mean, LOVE it. I have brought many friends to check it out and not one of them has left without a smile on their face, and their legs quivering. It is indeed a TOTAL body workout, and done so in an hour to fast-paced, fun music and an awesome group of girls. But for the real question... does it get you results, and fast? YES. YES. YES. I've come and gone to Dancers Shape, usually for a month at a time, and once the month is up my legs, specifically quads and hamstrings are much more defined... my hiney sits a little higher.... my arms are leaner... I'm more flexible and my strength has increased. Overall, my body definitely morphs and my confidence increases. I would love to give DS 5 stars, but the price is a bit high, so I must keep it 4. :/ Sorry, DS, but if you could cut back on prices you'd totally make your clientele SUPER happy and I'd definitely be hanging around more often. Hey, you'd probably even bring in many more gals, as I know price has been the deciding factor for my friends not continuing after the new client special offers are over. I love Dancers Shape. I've become something I swore I'd never be - a person who talks about my workouts and recommends them to unsuspecting friends and family. I even make my husband and friends go to class, and they always end up thanking me (especially my husband - he has good taste). I started going a year ago and I still look forward to my workouts. I'd been running and attending boot camps, but I've never had results like I'm getting from Dancers Shape. I'm stronger, I have less aches and pains, better posture and I'm a faster runner. (I'm also smaller, but I don't tend to think of that as my motivation). The instructors are wonderful - kind, motivating, and knowledgeable. Jennifer has created a welcoming environment for people of all fitness levels. Here's my advice - start with Graceful, take breaks when you need them and (if I can throw out a Say Anything reference) - get ready for greatness.
