This review is long over due. I have been quite busy for the past two weeks since seeing Shara for my makeup class. I found a livingsocial or groupon deal and asked my friend, Francis if she wanted to go together. We called the studio and made an appointment. We arrived on time and met Shara and another makeup artist. We were given a one on one makeup class. I had Shara and Francis had the other artist. The room was small but comfortable. They did a great job with the space. Shara was so sweet and professional. They both were. I felt like we were at a sleepover with my friends. We had a great time! She was so patient with me showed me how to hold the brushes and how to apply and stroke my face. Shara used a combination of my makeup and hers. My friend Francis who is awesome with eye makeup techniques learned a few more tricks. She was so happy with the results. We both were. We had tons of questions and they answered them all. After the class they laid out the products they used on us, with no pressure what so ever to purchase anything, but we did :-). Who could resist. Shara's brand makeup was so light and airy that we couldn't even feel it on. My favorite was her primer. The moment she applied it I saw a difference. My face was glowing and my pores appeared smaller, diminished, practically nonexistent. The "Fan" brush is a-must-have. Love it!!! I also purchased a foundation, but I wasn't too thrilled with it. There wasn't anything wrong with it, but I'm not a foundation person, I just wanted to cut that step out of my daily routine. Besides the primer offered excellent coverage when applied under a bronzer or mineral power. I contacted Shara and explained to her why I didn't want it. She was like fine, no problem just drop by when you can and return it. It was as easy as that. While I was there I purchased or should I say exchanged the foundation for the bronzer - excellent! So if you are ever in town or looking for someone to help you apply makeup the right way, look up Shara. Great place, good time, and the right look for you. Whether you're looking for an everyday look, an evening look or you have a special event, she's the one to see. Was there anything that the studio could have improved on ... yes. The lighting in the studio could have been a little bit brighter. It was a bit dim. Not dark and cozy dim, but not bright enough to see how your makeup will look in the office or outside in the day light. Everything else was perfect. Thank you Shara. read more

I actually came here for the first time in October of 2011 and loved it so much that I came back for a follow up. Not only does my skin love the makeup but Shara is awesome. Very down to earth and told me like it is. Some of the products I was using were the wrong colors and out of date and the colors she recommended brightened my face. My new favorite lip combo is her "mochaberry" lipliner with "hush" lipstick. Nude but with a glossy look. Can't go wrong. If you really don't know how to do your makeup then come see her! I was going for a girls night out and wanted to revamp my look since the weather is warming up in the city and I decided to take a lesson with shara. First off, I must say, shara is a sweetheart and so humble considering the talent and technique she has. I was telling her that I am sick of the same dark black smokey eye look that I always wear to go out and needed a change. She chose these beautiful brown hues that really made my eyes open up. She also showed me step by step techniques on how to apply makeup properly but also efficiently. The products she used on me looked so natural and felt so light but covered up my flaws perfectly. I went to Shara via a Lifebooker deal for a 90 minute make up application lesson. I had just gotten my hair cut and colored recently and needed a make over with the rest of my look from the neck up. Shara didn't disappoint. Now I will say I am not very experienced with make up so I showed up with nothing! It didn't seem to make sense to even bring what little stuff (which was old anyway) that I did have except maybe a few brushes I had laying around the house. Shara and her assistant were SOOOO nice and patient. I really loved how Shara made sure I did the other half of my face and was very descriptive with her instruction. Her assistant made notes on a piece of paper as we went through the lesson and kept track of all the colors and steps. Shara showed me a day and night look and by the time I left I was certainly ready for a night on the town (I had nowhere to go but home but hey, I looked great!). Now came the crucial part after the lesson, do I purchase anything. Well, I actually did... I purchased almost all of it. Hey, as I figured it, I didn't have anything and I needed it all, primer, mineral foundation, concealer, eye shadow base color, brow bone color, lid, crease, blush, lipstick, eye liner, mascara and undereye liner in white, evening eye shadows and all the brushes (fan, crease, kabuki and something she called big and fluffy). Shara gave me a complimentary cosmetic bag, moisturizer and gloss. All that, oh and plus the eye cream (that wasn't complimentary) and the total was about $500 including the cost of the class which was $100. My BF thought I was on crack, but I told him women usually buy each piece individually, but collectively make up is expensive. I'm happy and I've been keeping up. I don't get it perfect all the time but I get more confident and wanting to try new colors. I've emailed Shara a question or two and she has been great to respond. THese ladies are SUPER nice - Shara is like sugary nice and professional... hopefully my bit of potty mouth didn't offend lol... I have been meaning to write this for awhile, way overdue!! I had my new years eve make up done here and had a wonderful experience. The girl I had, her name is slipping my mind, (either Jennifer or Stephanie???), was an absolute doll. She listened to every request of mine and for the first time ever, a make up artist did not make my skin look shiny! Over the years, I stopped getting my full face done places bc make up arists put on too much and I looked glossy. But I put my trust in her and told her my past experiences and she was totally on the same page with me. Loved the end result, wish I could look like that all the time! She was also so informative, she taught me the right process and shading for undereye along the way (i have horrible bags) and I learned a bit about how I was applying the wrong color. I ended up buying a few products from here as well, the setting spray and the concealer stick for my eyes. Been using for months and really love it. Such great quality for a reasonable price. Despite being late by 10 minutes, Shara was super friendly and helpful. I went in a little flustered and within minutes we had to got work, discussing the reason I was visiting-perfecting my wedding day make up since it will be such a remote location no one will be able to do it for me. She explained everything in great detail, and her assistant took notes for me so I didn't have to. She found a neutral but beautiful palate. Where to start? Chose Shara Makeup Studio because we had a wedding in the Pierre hotel where their "studio" is located. Just didn't want to be running all over the place in the heat & humidity before the wedding. So I chose hair & makeup salons that were nearby knowing they might be a bit more expensive. First of all it is not a makeup "studio". It is a chair in an "oversized closet" which they obviously rent out from the DOMINIQUE hair salon (no I didnt use them for my hair) downstairs in the lower level of the elegant Pierre Hotel. (there was only signage for Dominique so I had to ask the front desk where to go as well). When I made my initial 6pm appointment online, they ask which stylist you would like. This doesnt matter because there is only 1 chair available and the owner from what I was "told" doesnt work there. I did NOT get the person I expected anyway. (it really didnt matter to me in all honesty bc I had never been there before, but I looked at the profile pictures they provided on their website to see which person most had the look I would use). The young lady that greeted me ( i will not put her name in this review because I do not want others who have had good experiences with her to penalize her for my very bad experience) was very nice but also very apologetic because her previous person was still in the chair (obviously also not pleased with her application bc I overheard her asking the artist to redo this and add that). While I was waiting I had a small issue of my own with my hair so she was nice enough to let me use some hairspray from the salon to fix my hair while I was waiting anyway. I had set up originally for an airbrush makeup app for 60 mins. Well, being I purposely made my appointment an hour before the wedding (and put in my comments if I could come 15 mins earlier that would be great for timing and never got a response) so the makeup would look fresh all night being it was in the same location as the wedding. I also had been told about a Groupon by a friend that I purchased as well which I asked her if I could use it or the value of it that would be great. She said she WOULD accept it because although I booked an airbrush application and it was for a lesson, bc of the time, she would do it. (which was now 6:32pm instead of 6:00) I told her forget the airbrush bc it would take too long which made the regular application $125 (which was the same value as the Groupon anyway). She said "don't worry I work fast and I'll get you there." Although she was trying to be nice, what this meant to me is "rushed" which it was & I too had to tell her to make my eyes smokier for an evening affair. Upon getting ready to leave (my husband came to meet me there about 5 mins to 7 so we could just go directly to the ceremony upstairs) she informed me that it was still the $150 because even though I bought MY OWN eyelashes to apply, she charged me the usual $25 to do that too. I didnt want to start a scene in front of him because she would've wound up with nothing after all that. I am not the type of person who makes someone do ANY part of their work & doesnt pay fairly for what WAS done. I WAS appalled when she said she would take what I paid for the Groupon ($57)but the rest was STILL expected. I gave her $110 in cash and left. Upon leaving I told my husband what happened and he said ok we will deal with it after the wedding. I do not expect anything in return other then for this establishment not to do this to someone else. For the record the regular makeup application is $125 and lashes ARE an extra $25, however that is also for a full hour AND ALL makeup products used. (I had NO base applied, just concealer, blush with contour and limited use of lip product as well in addition to eye makeup). When I was in the ceremony (that we were late for anyway by the time we actually got up there) my right eye started to burn so I went up to my room to see what the problem was between the ceremony and reception). I wound up having to re-apply my own makeup to correct the issue. I should have done this to begin with being for all the stress & chaos this caused. I hope their great reviews of lessons are REAL bc I don't see any negative reviews posted.I have been applying makeup to myself in an entertainment capacity since I was 16. (My own mother was a professional singer and taught me for my modeling headshots in my teens). I have used multiple makeup artists for MY many events for my own family (son's bar mitzvah, daughter's b'days and Sweet 16's) NEVER have I had such a bad experience. Do your homework there are PLENTY of makeup artists in Manhattan. Don't let this happen to you for the convenience of not knowing the city. I should have done more research instead of trying to make it convenient. I thought because their reviews were good it would be a great experience....NOT! read more

I bought a gift certificate for my mom as part of her 50th birthday present. She had been mentioning feeling a little down about getting older and I wanted to make her feel beautiful (because she is!!!). After mom had her lesson she called me right away to let me know it was the best present I'd ever given her. I had no trouble setting up an appointment. Danielle did my session and was so patient and helpful. I picked up a lot of useful techniques on make up application. There was no pressure for me to pick up any of their products but I did anyway ( loved them ! ). I even got notes in the end. I can see a difference in my make up application the very next day. I rarely leave reviews, but Shara is worth the 5 stars. She is an absolute doll - such a pleasure to work with and makes you feel great about yourself. I know my way around makeup and love to play with different looks, but she showed me some wonderful new tips that really changed my approach and made my skin glow. She really listens to what you want and explains what she's doing on one side of your face, then helps as you do the techniques on the other side. She spends so much time on the little details like finding your right colors, and it really makes a difference. She works with both her own products and what you bring in. She's not pushy on the upsell but her products are great quality and well priced (everything under $35) so you'll want to buy a few! It's the best lightweight, healthy foundation I've ever seen... and I used to refuse to wear any! I had a great time working with her and she is so generous. I was hosting my birthday party later that night and Shara helped me craft a gorgeous look and wasn't satisfied until I felt perfect. She didn't even say anything, but when I looked at the clock afterward she had spent a whole extra hour with me! True customer service. My gf got a gift of a makeup lesson for 2 ppl, so she took me. We were each assigned a makeup artist and mirror area and we were in the same room. Everyone was so very nice to us. We had a great time and we each received custom makeup lessons. They even wrote down all the instructions. The products that they used were not pushed on us, at all. The products are labeled by shara and they feel great. We both bought a lot of stuff. I couldn't find one of the items so I wrote to Shara, she responded immediately and was prepared to mail out the item. But I found it and alls swell. Wonderful experience at Shara!! She focused on my face make up first and did a really nice job of defining my cheek bones. The airbrush was applied evenly and perfectly. It wasn't too heavy. I would recommend her to anyone. Communication was easy and I felt like she was confident in her abilities. This made me completely comfortably. Shara did my makeup for my sister in law's wedding and was absolutely AMAZING. I am BEYOND picky about makeup and she completely nailed it at the trial, and even more so on the day itself. Great 1 hour LivingSocial makeup lesson with Jenn! As I realized, I had it all wrong, so I needed a lot of coaching. She was nice enough to explain everything and give a bunch of quick tips....from what to put the makeup on with to how to blend it into your face. She was patient while I was trying to paint on my half of the face and knowledgeable. End result looked great and for once I didn't look like a clown with eyeshadow on! I left feeling pretty and ambitious, so what else is a girl to do except make a pit stop @ Sephora - as usual I became overwhelmed within 5 mins (too many choices) and left empty handed! One thing that may help is after getting a lesson, a custom order basket from Sephora. This way things you need are still hand picked out by someone who knows what they're doing that actually did your makeup and you don't have to decide right on the spot. They do give you a list of products used however which is very helpful! Would return! read more

I met Shara two years ago when I took a makeup lesson from her. She did such a beautiful job and was so lovely to be around that I told her right then that I'd book her for my wedding one day. And I did! She and Ruth did makeup for myself and four other ladies, and everyone looked perfect. I don't typically wear a lot of makeup, so the difference was dramatic, yet still natural. Loved it! I got a LivingSocial and stopped by last night for my appt. Shara and her assistant made me feel SUPER comfortable while ensuring that I learned tips, techniques, and sent me home with a list of the colors used/techniques on each area of the face/ and allowed me to do the 'other' half of my face, mirroring what Shara had done on one side. This was really great and i cannot recommend them higher. I did purchase additional items after seeing the full face complete. She did a fantastic job and I will definitely refer to my notes often! But, I do want to mention they were not pushy about adding on product, which I had anticipated they may be. AMAZING!! I went in this weekend with my cousin and had the best time ever.
