This place had some of the rudest people I have ever met. I have no idea if the wines are good since we didnt stay for a tasting and will never be back. The building itself is very cool, very old world, like you're walking into the late 1800s, which I loved. That's where the love fest ended. My mom and I were "greeted" by a woman who snapped, "we dont seat until noon" and walked away. Uuhhh...what the what? We just wanted a wine tasting, so we approach the desk you have to check in at before you can do a tasting and the woman rolls her eyes at my wine passport that I handed her to get stamped. I will NEVER understand the attitude people sometimes give when you came to this location because of the wine passport. I was looking over the list and my mom was looking around and ended up walking outside to the garden patio, and was yelled at, yet again that they didnt seat until noon and why was she out there anyway, shes not supposed to be outside alone. The same woman then snapped at an older couple, probably late 80s, and extremely nice, who came in for lunch. We were watched like hawks, as if we were going to make a mess or steal something. Enjoyed just about everything with our food. I had the lamb and it was expertly cooked. It was a hard decision between the Delmonico steak, but my mate ordered that and it too was very well cooked. Our wine tasting was a little over an hour before our meal, glad we did that as we were able to pick out a wine we enjoyed to pair with dinner. Service was a little slow but we didn't mind as there was delicious bread and a nut assortment with dinner. I've frequented many fine steak houses and this meal was comparable. If I return, it would be for the meal. Of all the wines, we enjoyed the fleur rouge the most. We stopped by Taylor Brooke prior and enjoyed that tasting a little more. read more

What a great experience. A beautiful summer sunny August day enjoying wine in a shaded spot on their patio was what more people should do to relieve stress. The elderly lady there who I assume was the sole owner gave us a little history of her family-owned vineyard and how it changed over the years. Surprisingly she tied her years of experience into recognizing the policies and state and federal regulations of business hours, taxes, employees SS expense, etc. that added to her business's decline. I could see where many people would be offended with a true story about how our government especially in the last 2 years has become so controlling and corrupt. I'm shocked at how this business owner dares to complain and explain her personal feelings of oppression via taxes and regulation here in Connecticut. Perhaps she's not aware most people in Connecticut work for the state and support everything they do. What a great place to have a good tasting wine while listening to an experienced life time woman business owner. read more

This is a lovely vineyard but the tastings are rushed and I feel like I'm in a wine factory. With this lovely setting it should be relaxed and comfortable and yet we feel like we are being being pushed through and not allowed to enjoy ourselves because there is a big party coming so they would like us out of here. We had to ask for crackers more than once and ended up with a basket of Ritz which is not what I expect from a high-quality vineyard like this. They do not rinse the glasses in between red and white and the glass that I receive was bent and leaning in one direction so certainly not very good quality. The wines are excellent but the whole experience could be improved. read more

First off, let me start by saying how beautiful this place is. The vineyard is on a plateau so that even on a hot and humid day like today, a wonderful breeze was felt. There were flowers all over the patio and and rows and rows of vines all over the property. When we walked in, we were greeted by the prim and proper staff and they explained the different tasting options. After being rung up, we went to the outdoor tasting area. Most of the seating under the trees was already taken so we stood near the table and picked the 5 wines we each wanted to try. In all, the wines were pretty good with a few not so much for our tastes. We decided on the 2011 Dry Riesling as the bottle to take home. We didn't have much of a direct interaction with the owner but we saw how she could be perceived as being pushy and not-so-nice. The staff, in general, was a little too well rehearsed and a bit stuffy, really. As far of a trek for us as this place is, I don't anticipate returning. read more

They are not family friendly, which traditionally I would be fine with, but rather than just saying they don't allow kids they lie behind regulations that aren't true. Just be honest you don't want kids around (which is funny because they allowed us as a family in the midst of the pandemic when traffic was slow). Good Wine, Pricey Food Sharpe Hill Vineyard is a great place for wine tasting in any season. In warm weather a large outdoor courtyard is available and when the weather turns cold an indoor tasting area is located in an old barn. If you plan on having dinner, reservations are a must. A month in advance is suggested. The menu is limited but all the entrees are excellent. I suggest the Delmonico steak or Chicken with/ Herbes de Province. The cheese plate is an excellent choice for an appetizer and it serves four! Outstanding deserts and service! The only drawback is that the food for dinner is very pricey for what you get. 30 dollars for a chicken breast or 36 dollars for a 12 ounce Delmonico steak. A little steep. What a nice spot sort of in the middle of nowhere. We visited during a very hot and humid day, but it was quite nice sitting outside under the tree. Instead of standing at a bar, this vineyard has you sit and brings the wine to you. You can sample 6 wines for $10 or all 13 for $15. My husband and I each did the tasting of six and shared so we got taste all of the wines. The woman we encountered when we first walked in that was running the register did leave a bad taste in my mouth. She was extremely fake and robotic in all of her interactions. You can purchase a cheese plate for $15. In addition to the cheese there were nuts, crackers, grapes and dried fruits. I was hoping for real cheese, but the plate consisted of two "slices" of processed cheese spread. Kevin did our tasting and he was fun. We ended up buying two bottles of the Cuvee Ammi Phillips and one bottle of the Cabernet Franc. It's worth the drive out here for a visit. read more

I have been to a lot of vineyards in CT and I can definitely say that Sharpe Hill Vineyard has some of the best, most diversified wine in the state with overall very affordable prices (~15 per bottle on average). It is situated on a beautiful farm in Eastern Connecticut with picturesque views and scenery. The restaurant/tasting rooms retain a classic New England colonial feel , which made for a very warm and cozy atmosphere. Despite being in a more "remote" part of the state, the place was packed on the day of our visit as we arrived in between seatings for their restaurant. Sharpe Hill Vineyard offers two tastings either 6 wines for $8 or 13 wines for $15 (although on the day we were there we sampled 14). Obviously there is no option, but to take the better deal! Our tasting also included a glass. Our server, Jill, who was one of the owners, was very personable and friendly, especially given how busy she was with other customers. As previously mentioned the wines that Sharpe Hill offers are very diverse and stood out from the many other CT wineries. Top hits within our group included Ballet of Angels, American Chardonnay, both the dry and German rieslings, Fleur Rouge, and Late Harvest (FYI limited batch so ~25 a bottle). I have to say, I am definitely a fan of Sharpe Hill Vineyards. I can't wait to return to try their restaurant for a special occasion. I try to write balanced reviews so I'll start with the positives. The location is lovely....truly! The upstairs restaurant is a beautiful, warm setting. My steak was perfectly cooked and very flavorful. Positives done. The older employers have a LOT to learn from the younger employees in terms of manners. The woman behind the counter was very curt - almost to the point of being rude. Moreover, she started prattling on and on about how Donald Trump is being treated so poorly through the 'witch hunt.' Rule number 1: don't EVER discuss politics with your patrons. We were out to enjoy some wine and a nice meal, and this woman kept giving us her political opinions. No thank you... The wine was good, nothing earth shattering. The four of us found the menu to be boring. Odd choice of apps and desserts. We all went with the charcuterie board and steak as that was what the waitress suggested. Good call. The desserts were a random offering: key lime pie, a raspberry cake and some other thing that escapes me. The waitress suggested the raspberry cake. We all found it be dry and overly sweet. Not at all what she told us it would be. There are better vineyards and certainly better restaurants in the area that will afford you politics-free wine tasting and more interesting food options. I went for a wine tasting in the back area, I saw the the lunch trellis area and it looks like a nice place to relax and eat. OH my where to begin. This was the first stop of our winery hopping. We walked in and immediately were bombarded by and older women with. " take your coats off you can't wear them " And you're gonna sit here. She gave us NO time to even breath she started so many rants. Another women came over to ask what tasting we were getting ( the older women literally interrupted and pushed the largest tasting on us. Then forced the cheese and crackers on us (Ritz crackers and the hardest port wine cheese). I asked if they were a mother/daughter team.. YES! The daughter started the tasting the mother constantly interrupted telling her what to do and say. I felt really bad for the daughter. The daughter started losing track of what bottle she was serving. This was not a professional experience at all, losing track of which tasting we were on, pouring the wine and it dripping outside the glass on every pour. The mother berating the daughter. Verbally expressing political views. At first I thought this was entertaining, but it turned into a very uncomfortable, unprofessional not so relaxing experience. The wine and the atmosphere was good, we did buy a bottle. This older women the actual owner really needs to do something about her attitude and how she treats and speaks to people. Wow - I am so glad we listened to a fellow vineyard goer a couple months ago who suggested Sharpe Hill. It's in the Pomfret area, a solid hour from Providence, but a beautiful country drive on Rte 6. It's definitely in the middle of nowhere but the utter New England beauty is just breathtaking. You'll pull up to red farmhouses and barns with the vines on a hill as the backdrop - you then enter the large structure and are greeted by stone and wood walls, an intimate setting reminiscent of an old country farmhouse with the cutest tasting room which seats about 15 people. We did the full tasting which was 11 wines for $15 (vs. the half tasting which was 6 wines for $10). The pours were more the generous and our server was very knowledgeable and sweet (Olivia, was her name!) This was the first vineyard we've been to where I would have happily bought and drank any of the wines on the tasting...their Angelica Rose and Sweet Riesling were by far the best. We ended up taking a Riesling home with us. We found out they have a restaurant with special nights and seatings. After Olivia sold us on one of the Paris Bistro dinner nights, we booked a 4 top table near their back (stunning!) fireplace for later in March. Apparently this is one of their more popular events and we're so looking forward to attending. We were told during the summer the place is packed with visitors enjoying the grounds (you can't bring your own food to picnic, but welcome to bring lawn chairs and dogs!) I've been going to Sharpe Hill for several years, but will never go again after our visit this past weekend. The mother/daughter team (owners) make this a completely chaotic experience. You're rushed through your wine tasting, and there's barely one sip of each wine provided. Instead of picking the wines you want to taste, they try to force their picks on you. At one point this winery provided a relaxing atmosphere, where you could take your time, enjoy the surroundings, and actually have several sips of each wine during your tasting. The property was once absolutely beautiful, but is now in a state of decline. A party asked to see the vineyard, and the owner said no one is allowed in the vineyard "there's a rodent problem, even the animals are reacting to what's going on in the world". What!?! We left without purchasing any wine and will never return. It's very sad that this once lovely place, has declined to this point. If you're looking for a lovely experience try Taylor Brook Vineyard instead! read more

We've been to many vineyards in CT and this one is a very nice experience overall. The wine was very good, in particular the Ballet of Angels was good! Tastings are done in an old barn or outside on warm summer days, which adds to the historic CT feel of this vineyard. Sharpe Hill is part of the CT Wine trail. Something you have to try is eating here. Reservations are extremely tight, and usually require three weeks or so to get. We ordered four entrees, two appetizers and two bottles of wine for four people, and the price was not cheap (around $240!). The food was fantastic though! Our appetizers were a caprese salad and a rainbow trout appetizer. The salad was out of this world! For meals, we got two of the chicken appetizers and then the shrimp dish and the scallops dish. I attached pictures on here so you can see the dishes and presentation. I'd recommend taking a trip out to this vineyard to experience all it has to offer, just make sure to do it after payday! read more

How do I put this nicely? The wine was okay. The rest of my experience was not. Read on if you'd like to hear me whine... get it?... like "wine" but it means to complain. Do I have to explain everything to you people? Anyway... Our drive up the endless (private?) road through the woods was awe inspiring. When we finally reached the parking lot the views were stunning and the grapevines seemed to stretch for miles. I thought we'd really found wine mecca. First impressions can be deceiving. Let's run down a quick checklist of things I like about going to wineries and how Sharpe Hill held up: 1) Personable, friendly staff - Not happening here. The woman behind the counter - I assume the owner based on the other complaints on here - was far from sweet. 2) Personal attention. I want to be walked through my tasting with detailed flavor profiles and the history behind the wine, not shoved around at a folding table and rushed out of the way. 3) It's not a requirement, but being able to bring some snacks to enjoy with the bottle we decide to purchase is always nice, and most allow it. At Sharpe Hill you either pay their movie theater price (I believe $18) for a small "snack plate", which likely consists of Cracker Barrel cheese and a couple crackers or you go without. In fact, one winery we recently visited (without our trusty snack cooler) brought a similar plate out to us at no charge without us even asking. A small gesture makes all the difference. - See Arrigoni Winery. 4) Ability to enjoy the scenery. Sharpe Hill has gorgeous grounds but about 3 places to sit outside if you don't want to be on the ground. And their outdoor seating area is caged in, presumably to keep riffraff, snackers like me and the lady friend out. 5) Finally, good wine. I have no complaints about their wine. However, there are plenty of other local wineries/vineyards with comparable or better wine that can meet my other, I don't think unfair, demands. I'll not be returning. read more

I don't really know where to begin with this review because I'm still staggered by the rudeness my friends and I experienced while wine tasting today. The owner Catherine (?) was hosting a tasting with one group and we were being handled by a younger, very kind and helpful young man. I've heard so many great things about Sharpe and... honestly I'm heart-broken about the poor tact used by the the owner. She was apparently drinking while working (acceptable at a vineyard I suppose) but then proceeded to offend a friend of mine with words I won't repeat. Seriously, dropping words I would be embarrassed to use in public, let alone to people visiting MY vineyard and paying money to drink MY wine... When we spoke up about her incredible rudeness and let her know she was out of line, she pulled our glasses and told us to leave!! ..... I just really don't know what else to say except the owner is unappreciative of her clientele and I would recommend 18 other vineyards in CT before I would mention Sharpe. One star. I did ten tastings for $10 at Sharpe Hill. Each pour was pretty substantial, so if you're driving, or have any interest in walking a straight line afterward, you may want to go for the 5 for $5 option. Either way, the logo glass is yours to keep. The tasting room at Sharpe Hill is a bit cramped. The bar itself will only accommodate three or four people comfortably, so if more than a few people are there, it can be difficult to find a place to stand and rest your glass. There are adjacent sitting areas, but if you opt to do a tasting, you'll need to get up and go to the bar for each sample. I particularly liked Sharpe Hill's American Chardonnay and St. Croix, and the guy running the tasting did a nice job discussing each wine as it was served. My only complaint, aside from the less than optimal tasting room situation, was the rather salty woman who showed up at the end of the tasting to cash out the register, glare at the customers, and loudly proclaim that the place was closing. Overall, our experience at Sharpe Hill was fine, but didn't really stand out. read more

Wow. The only reason I'm giving them two stars is because their wine is pretty good. Unfortunately, they suffer from poor management. We drove 40 minutes, arriving at 4:12pm (ample time before their designated cut off time of 4:30pm on Sundays). They close at 5pm. We were stopped at the door and told that they weren't doing tastings because they let everyone go due to the nice day. Nice days are usually when you have customers. We could buy a bottle and be on our our way, or sit on a stool next to the counter and have one glass, but there would be no tastings or seating outside. Randomly changing your hours and what you offer is really a sign of poor business skills. In the past, we have come here many times (one of our first dates happened at Sharpe Hill), but I'm disinclined to ever visit again. It's interesting that, in a pandemic when businesses are suffering, the management of Sharpe Hill is rudely turning customers away. Seems shortsighted to me. read more

Sharpe Hill Vineyard is a vineyard that not only turns out some of the best wines (Ballet of Angels, Late Harvest, Reserve Chardonnay, etc.) but the dining experience at Sharpe Hill is just divine. The pairing of the wine, the New England atmosphere, and the gourmet delectables that come from the kitchen, makes this one of the best dining experiences in CT. The service is always very attentive, and outside dining during the warm months, and fireside dining during the cooler months gives you a variety of locations to enjoy your meal. Make reservations well in advance if you plan on going on the weekend since the seatings fill very quickly. Try to get there early and enjoy a wine tasting and then a nice walking tour through the vineyard. And the food prepared at Sharpe Hill is of the highest quality that would make even most restaurants in Manhattan jealous. The fresh produce from the vegetable and herb garden enhance all the fresh flavors that match the excellent grilled meats and fish. The buffalo mozzarella and smoked trout appetizers are a great way to make your way to the Delmonico steak or the lamb chops cooked with fresh herbs and selections from their own vintage. You can order anything on the menu and bask in the culinary perfection. If you are ever in the area, Sharpe Hill is a required stop. read more

As we pulled into Sharpe Hill Vineyard in Pomfret, CT, I was immediately transported back to my youth in northern NH. The barns, gardens, and fence rows reminded me of the many farms in the small town where I grew up. Did another Yelper use the word "idyllic", because if not, then I am claiming that word as my own for my description of the Sharpe Hill Vineyard property. However, a winery is more than the land upon which it is located, and I've seen others squander their perfect soils and climates. Fortunately, Sharpe Hill Vineyard was able to utilize what Mother Nature provided, and their result is Ballet of Angels. If you were to taste only this wine while enjoying the breath-taking scenery, you would leave a happy person. I didn't experience any of the poor service or grumpy proprietors that others described. Perhaps this is because we arrived at Sharpe Hill with the sole intention of sampling Ballet of Angels, and maybe a few other choice wines, and we departed as soon as we had accomplished this...completely satisfied. read more

I love the drive there and at Sharpe Hill i thought you could walk up the hill to see the view at the top but i saw keep out signs today not the welcoming signs that point you in the direction of the small walk. We then encountered no great personality upon buying the tasting. We asked about buying an appetizer but are only choice was a cheese box. Surprisingly yummy!! Our pourer served us in the garden arean and had no personality and did not find us funny. We tried! He provided us with splashes not pours. Very disappointing. Also waited to long in between. Beautiful setting and grounds. Visited Saturday with a small group of friends and were very disappointed . Staff was unprofessional, bordering on rude. Tersely old to "Get in line!" upon arrival. No servers arrived and we were required to each take our glass to them for every pour. Barista told us to pay attention to the description for each wine, even if we were getting something different, so he wouldn't have to repeat himself the ne tbtime we came up. There were no crackers on the the table, no water, no way to dispose of an unwanted sample, no napkins. We asked for crackers and, after 15 minutes, got a plastic basket of Ritz. Upon checking out (the wines are very good!), I waited for several minutes -while the line grew behind me - as the staff person initiated a long conversation with a customer about his injured finger. We were treated to multiple descriptions of puss and gore, all of which were unnecessary and inappropriate. I love their wines but will skip the vineyard and buy what I can at the local liquor store. read more

The vineyard itself and the surrounding area is absolutely beautiful. The garden where you do the wine tastings is relaxing and gorgeous. We went a month ago for the tasting and decided to come back for the restaurant so we made reservations 3 weeks ago. Ambiance - exceptional. Very nicely done restaurant area (upstairs in the barn) Food - It was ok. Maybe my expectations were set too high, but the food was ok. I had the Delmonico steak and while it was good - I've had comparable at plenty of other restaurants. Here's what REALLY bothered me - Order a bottle of wine to take home (downstairs) and the bottle was $17.50 which is quite reasonable for a REALLY good bottle of wine. Order the EXACT same bottle upstairs in the restaurant (run by the same people as downstairs) and they charged me $25.00. Same bottle.. same people. Never again. I understand when restaurants markup their wines, but downstairs the wine was $17.50 yet in the SAME BUILDING it's $25 because "its at the restaurant." Insane. Live and learn I guess. read more

You'll probably want to ignore my review. This was my first time going to a winery and...I don't drink wine. I only went because my wife and I (and another couple) were nearby for the weekend. My friend and I don't drink wine, so we just walked around and took in the surroundings while our wives drank up. So the surroundings are primarily what my review is based on...and not the food or drink. Being from South Florida, it was nice to walk up the hill and sit in a couple chairs overlooking the grapevines, hills, and overall rural landscape. It was 100% quiet and peaceful. Perhaps we got there on a lucky day, but there wasn't another soul walking around. We didn't even know walking up the hill was an option until the friendly staff quite literally told us to go wherever we felt like going. They were incredibly kind. No silly rules about keeping off of the grass or out of the garden. We had free reign to walk wherever piqued our interest. My wife and my friend's wife enjoyed their wine tasting; but, again, this was me and my wife's first trip to a vineyard. read more

Sharpe Hill, home of Creepy Baby Wine. I've bought that Creepy Baby (also known as Ballet of Angels) home from the store a handful of times over the years, so it was nice to get out and see where the magic happens. It was a pretty chaotic day at Sharpe Hill, as there was a lot of people packed inside due to rain, and a group of loud women wearing tiaras, leaving a trail of feathers on the floor from their boas. I'm sure the staff were as happy to see them as I was. We experienced a few minutes of sensory overload and not knowing where to go or what to do, and considered getting our passports stamps and getting out of there. But staff did eventually help us, pointing us towards the counter where you pay first, before moving into then into the tiny but charming tasting room. They were apologetic about the busyness, and seemed to be doing their best to accommodate everyone. I'm so glad we made it to the tasting. The room is full of quirky antiques and paintings; I felt like I was hanging out with the Gatsbys. As for the wine itself, I liked some more than others, some not so much, and at least one or two that I could dig. I want to return on a sunny day next year, so I could enjoy sitting outside in their gorgeous garden! read more

Aw, man! Taishi beat me to this review! We arrived at Sharpe Hill around 4:30 on Sunday afternoon for a wine tasting and found this experience to be quite delightful. As we walked through this historic building (which was constructed in 1844), we were greeted by super nice employees informing us our options for tasting. We decided to go with the 5 samples since they closed at 5. 5 bucks later, were on our way outside to a scenic view of a portion of the vineyard and comfy wicker chairs. The sommelier was friendly and seemed informed with the wines offered although he was young. We tried a seraph that was not part of their list, but ended up purchasing a bottle of St. Croix and Cabernet Franc. The St. Croix truly did have a buttery aftertaste like they listed and the Cab was less dry than your usual. Best of all, you get to keep your wine glass! I would highly recommend coming to Sharpe Hill if you get a chance to for the scenery and excellent wine! read more

A lovely tasting experience, indeed! As with all of the CT wineries I've been to, Sharpe Hill boasts a bucolic country setting in middle-of-nowhere Pomfret. When locals chat about the CT Wine Trail, Sharpe Hill nearly ALWAYS comes up, so I was thrilled to finally check it out. I met up with a few friends from Boston and commenced with the full tasting - 10 wines for $12 plus a signature Sharpe Hill wine glass. What I loved most about this tasting compared to others I've been to in the state (and even out of state) - 1) we could partake in the tasting outside, and 2) wines were brought to us. We ended up staying for about an hour and a half (maybe even two hours) during this well-paced tasting. While we were still educated on each wine by the winery staff, we were also able to enjoy the time in conversation and relaxation, rather than hovering around a bar counter awkwardly waiting for our next pour. It's a bit of a drive from Hartford, but there are some lovely farms and creameries up that area -- so definitely commit to making a day of it - ice cream, fruit picking, Vanilla Bean Cafe, and wine tasting! There's also a restaurant AT the winery, although I didn't stay to dine. read more

The prices are insane for what you get. The appetizers were bizarre - essentially grocery store selections: deli section cheese, lox out of the package. The accompanying bread bowl was similarly just processed food from a supermarket. Crackers and cheese straws. I ordered the lamb entree. It was $38 and received 2 tiny lamb chops extremely over cooked with a couple potatoes and a small handful of green beans. Father-in-law ordered the $28 herbs de Provence chicken and received a basic plate of chicken breast we could have made better at home for $5. Who makes a fancy woodfire chicken dish with a boneless skinless chicken breast? My in-laws asked us to choose a place to eat and I was so embarrassed that we chose this place and received such a disappointing and expensive meal. Never again. read more

I recently returned to Sharpe Hill after a few years. The location and facility is very similar to what it was, however they have added on a dinning space/restaurant. The food smelled amazing, however I didn't try any of it, apparently the restaurant has a two/three week wait on reservations. The wine tasting itself was very peaceful. There are plenty of chairs placed under a tree and a few staff walk around to assist people through the tasting process. I found this location to be more laid back than other vineyards where you are standing at a bar shooting wine back. I'm a big fan of their reds at this location. There is no outside food allowed on this property. Plenty of parking. read more

I finally decided to write a review after two sub-par experiences. The first experience is not worth reviewing, it was over a year ago and hundreds of winery visits inbetween. We decided to come solely for our Labor day plans 9/2/13 being in the area. We wanted the passport stamp more than anything. we are a group of 4 who all chose the entire wine list for our tasting. 75 minutes and we're only half done out tasting. The vineyard was packed. With only ONE Pourer. this is assanine considering the owner is here not helping at all. I will NOT be coming back. It shouldnt take us two hours to get to the point of purchasing and enjoying a bottle. On the other hand my samples have all been less than 1oz. 3 sips have been impossible to achieve, and after hundreds of vineyard visits in our travels, this is severly disappointing. The owner is more than capable of lifting and pouring some tastings for customers. read more
