A friend introduced me to this place a few weeks ago, and I've been hooked ever since. Although it's a fast casual restaurant, it definitely should not be overlooked. They serve up some delicious food and at a more than reasonable price point. I ordered a chicken thigh over rice with a side of tres leches cake. The chicken thigh was tender and juicy and it had a nice smoky aroma from the char of the grill. I even enjoyed the rice as it was soft and had a nice flavor of its own. Each dish came with a side salad as well, which was a nice pairing with the meal. The dessert was good also tasty as the cake was moist, but did not fall apart. I would've preferred the sweet glaze on top to be a little less thick as it was quite hard to spread. My friend ordered a burger which was tasty as well. We both ordered the large size for our dishes and the portion size was huge. They each came with two large pieces of chicken thigh over a generous portion of rice and salad. I've only been here a couple of times, and she could live off all their halal dishes, and it is a must for her in my neighborhood. When we visited earlier this year, we ordered some of their lamb and chicken pita sandwiches . This halal establishment has been around for decades and is very popular. I usually get my falafel from King Of Falafel at the corner of Ditmars and 31st, but I decided to try out Shawarmania, which is very conveniently located right outside of the Astoria-Ditmars Blvd (N) station. They take Apple Pay and are quick to prepare your food. I ordered a falafel pita ($8) which came with pickled turnips, pickles, and tons of salad. The falafel was a little crumbly but it was very moist and well flavored. The store space is narrow but has plenty of seating should you decide to dine-in. When Shawarmania first opened a handful of years ago, they were going through some serious growing pains (slow delivery, customer service issues, food quality, etc.), so much so that I'd wonder if they'd make it. Fast forward to now: not only have them outgrown their issues, but they've become a big part of why Ditmars is thriving as a neighborhood. Food wise, they are bringing the heat. Portions are very good for the value and should satiate even the hungriest eater. From their pita sandwich combos to their very heavy platters, it is a win for all people who love any ounce of this kind of food. Their mixed grill platter might be the most expensive item ($17?) on the menu but it's got enough food for two people. The chunks of lamb, chicken, and beef are tender and delicious. Drizzled with tahini and a side of pita and I'm all set. But there is a lot more to appreciate. Their classic chicken kebab pita sandwich is the bomb in itself. The same goes for their infamous "shawafel" which is chicken shawarma with falafel all stuffed into a sandwich with vegetables and tahini + hummus. Pictures and descriptions certainly don't do it justice. For our less meat loving friends, their eggplant salad and chickpea salad is very tasty. The falafel is excellent and pairs well with everything on the menu. I'm not super sold on the "Arabic salad"which is a tad too heavy on the tomatoes and onions for me. For feta loving folks, their feta salad is a big hit and their sauces serve as outstanding condiments. I am looking forward to my next meal here already. read more

It is conveniently located by the last stop on the N train, Ditmars Ave. It is a well lit restaurant with funky murals on the wall and two good looking hunks of meat, lamb/beef and chicken, on spits by the window. This was enough to bring me in. Shawarmania serves a below average shawarma sandwich. The beef/lamb combo falls short in taste, size and overall presentation. I was very disappointed. Taste was, no taste. It lacked the flavors of the Middle East; coriander, cumin, paprika, thyme, oregano, turmeric, etc. Not all spices are used, but each restaurant that serves a shawarma sandwich has it's own magic blend. Shawarmania needs to work on this magic. The beef/lamb in my pita sandwich was dry and tough. It was certainly overcooked, but no excuse for tough pieces of meat. I notice when leaving the spits of meats did not have those juices flowing through the body of the meats. The overall ratio of meat, veggies, sauce and pita; well, let me say I was still hungry after this sandwich. The tough and dry meat mixture was so small, I thought I was in a "Where's the Beef commercial by Wendy's years ago". At $6.50 a sandwich way over priced. The side of hot sauce was delicious. Don't know if it was homemade or a commercial brand, but it was awesome. It had fire and spice. Outstanding. Overall, Shawarmania has some tough competition in the area. BZ Grill is The Best for this type of sandwich. I know it's pork, but it is The Best in Astoria. The King of Shawarma on B'way has The Best shawarma platter in Queens. Period. Shawarmania has a small margin of error, but if you call yourself Shawarmania, you need to raise the bar some. read more

Having gone past this places numerous times on my visits in Astoria. I finally decided to try it out. Afterall it always smells amazing!! Came in and the nice gentleman referred me and my friend to look up at the menu on the wall because it has more than the paper menu. I ordered the lamb and beef platter. I wasnt sure where to pick bc i looked at yelp for help there. There was so much from this plate i couldnt finish. The recipe amazing. Loved the tzatziki sauce and tahini. Not a fan of the spicy sauce! The meat was good but was so chopped up i couldnt tell which was which. But it was good! Next time i think ill try chicken or just plain or whichever meat i am feeling! We grabbed a couple sandwiches for takeout. I had the chicken shawarma sandwich. Unfortunately, they weren't too busy and had turned the heat down on the spots. The meat was served from one of the trays keeping it warm (similar to chipotle). I think the experience would have been different if the meat was cut right off the spit. It was lacking the crispness and char that you get from freshly cut shawarma thought the flavor and seasoning were certainly great. The rest of the sandwich was delicious and I had not complaints. I've been on a middle eastern kick lately and the beef kebab platter was enough food to feed a small army and delicious. The beef kebab takes longer than carving schwarma off a spit, so they warned me when ordering it would take about 10 minutes, which was fine. Then they also kept me up to date about how much longer it'd be (it took the promised 10 - not some absurdly long time hah) The pita was weirdly fluffy, but not bad. The lamb/beef shawarma wasn't necessarily a classic; it was perhaps closer to a burger than what I'd expect in a Middle Eastern establishment. But the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. The hefty combination of meat, rice, pickles and salad worked very well, especially when you add the spicy red sauce (platters arrive with three sauces.) Mouth watering fresh food.The staff is so friendly and welcoming.The owner is a sweetheart.He gave us delicious falafel platter with baba ganoush on the house.Again,fresh ,crispy on the outside and soft inside falafels served as a great appetizer.We were also given two rice pudding as dessert, also on the house.Have you seen such hospitality anywhere else?!?!
