Came with a large group (6 total) here a few weeks ago on a weekday for dinner since this was across the street from the escape room we were trying later on in the evening. Located right by the last stop on the N or W line headed Uptown/Queens if you decide to take the train! Street parking otherwise. We got one of the value/family meals to share along with an order of shawarma fries. We were able to order right before 8 pm and get/eat our food in a little over an hour. Good portions. Value Meal #1 included koftas, beef kebabs, and chicken kebabs. It included rice, pita bread, falafel balls, and our choice of salad - we chose the Arabic salad. Our order also said it came with 15 sauces - they have 5 different kinds of sauces in all. I believe they were tahini, garlic, white, tzatziki, & hot sauce. I'm convinced this place catfishes reviews and pictures -there's no way this place could be doing so well. This place is absolutely disgusting! I've never had such a bad meal before in Astoria where you simply could not tolerate the meal at all. I ordered a mixed chicken kabab & beef / lamb shawarma platter to share with a friend. First, the delivery took nearly an hour and half (although the estimate says 30 mins). The food arrived cold and had a horrible smell. I had to throw it outside because it was reeking up my entire apartment! It smelled like bloody meat I kid you not. The chicken was dry beyond belief. I paid extra for tzatziki sauce and man, even that was bad. It was basically chobani plain yogurt with water pour on top (not even mixed, literally sitting on top all separated). Now the beef / lamb shawarma. We all think the rotating wheel of meat, all juicy with a slight char. Well, this place decided to call frozen flank slice beef a shawarma. I feel like this place has never made this before because the meat tasted old and bloody as if it was not finished thawing. I could gag thinking about it. This review is strictly about the DELIVERY/TAKE-OUT. Shawarmania serves up a healthy portion of food that consistently satisfies me with extra food to spare. So far, I have tried their kofta platter, shawafel feast, as well as their lamb and beef platter. All of these ranged between $12 and $14, which I find is honestly a tad on the pricier side. That being said, the portions definitely are bigger than normal, so I'm not complaining too much. Delivery has always been fast regardless of when I order--whether it's 5, 6, or 8, and the quality seems to be consistent and reliable. These are huge plusses when I'm trying to figure out what I want to order in for the night. A standard rice platter comes with a side of beets, pickles, lettuce, pepperoncini, olives, and a dolma. The variety of veggies and pickles is certainly a welcome addition to the otherwise hefty rice and meat dish. The lamb and beef (4.5/5) was great. The meat was abundant and flavorful and best of all, not tough. It may have been a little overcooked, but it was still juicy and tender which, in my book, is the very least I could ask for. The kofta (3/5), while plentiful, was exceedingly dry. Perhaps this was because of the delivery, and while the taste was there, it felt granular on the tongue and overall not all too pleasant to eat. The shawafel comes with their chicken as well as a few falafels. The falafels (3/5) were also a little underwhelming. It was not crunchy on the outside at all, but I can understand that fried food lose their texture during delivery. The bigger problem, for me, was that the inside of it was just a tad too pastey instead of full of chickpea texture. Maybe this is just a difference of preference. The real hero, however, was the chicken (5/5). The chicken was so incredibly juicy and flavorful. Perfectly seasoned with just enough of a grilled flavor to be exciting, the chicken was, by far, my favorite thing on the menu. Despite all my criticisms, I think Shawarmania definitely serves some pretty quality food, and I would love to come and eat at the establishment sometime. My go-to orders from here on out are the lamb and beef as well as the chicken. As a note: as trivial as this might seem, I have a strong preference for their white sauce as well as their hot sauce as compared to what other shawarma places have. read more

Having lived in Astoria for a while, I've tried all sort of shawarma, all of which are generally pretty good (the meat is a tough equation to get wrong) but this place probably has one of my favorites, mainly because of the freshness of the pita and vegetables and their AWESOME garlicy sauce that they include. This sauce is amazing both inside the pita, and for their French fries, which are equally great - crinkle cut and very light potato puree inside. I'm salivating just writing this review! Interior is fairly minimalistic. They have a good selections of Middle Eastern salads (tabbouleh etc.) that you can get to reduce some of your guilt over any potentially unhealthy choices that you make while eating. Their prices are reasonable and fairly "middle of the road" - I believe a pita is under $6. Service is friendly and prompt. Right next to the subway too, very convenient! read more

Pretty good food. Got the falafel pita and the mozzarella sticks as a take out order. The order was prepared on time and the mozzarella sticks did not seem to be traditionally coated, but i kind of liked it better that way because they were not as oily as other mozzarella sticks. This place deserves 5 stars! I was really in the mood for Middle Eastern food, so because of the lack of this cuisine in my area I resorted to Astoria. I was in between Shwarmania and Duzan but for no reason in particular I chose Shwarmania :) Upon arriving I have to admit I was a bit hesitant from the bright yellow walls covered in cartoons and graphics from edge to edge and thought I'd be turning around lol. But with the amount of takeout orders on the counter and the amount of people coming in, I figured it was a good spot. Well anyways, after viewing the food counter and meat spits I knew I wanted to stay. The beef (which is what I had my eye on) looked amazing. Unfortunately it wasn't going to be ready for another 25 minutes. So, my bf and I headed over to the pub a few doors down to kill time. When we came back, we ordered our food (the guy was shocked to see us actually come back) to stay and were told we could pay afterwards. I got a medium rice and salad bowl with chicken and beef shawarma ($10). Come on do you think I could have chosen between the two? ;) My bf got a large rice and salad bowl with just beef ($13). We also ordered a side of falafel (5 pieces for $4). Both meals also included a pita bread. The meals were very filling, satisfying and WELL WORTH IT!! I was expecting a mediocre halal meat platter, maybe something a little better than the cart food since this was a restaurant. But oh man this was 10x better than the cart food. The meats were very well marinated and juicy. The rice was great, not dry at all- different (better) look and texture from the kind you get on the streets. The salad was actually a real salad with all the fixings- lettuce, tomato, beets, pickles, onions, jalapeno. Since they give you a pita, my suggestion is first filling your pita to make a gyro (delicious!) and then eat the remaining on its own. As for me, the remaining turned into a big lunch the next day. Thats how much food is in this freakin plate! and mind you I got the medium. My bf couldn't even finish his (large) platter and hes a big eater! The falafel was also great. I've had it a few times before and didn't have a liking for it, but after tasting, I was glad he ordered it! The guy behind the counter who I'm convinced was the owner (didn't ask) was extremely nice and polite. His attitude alone would make me want to return lol. He forgot to charge us for the falafel after I already paid so he said it was on the house. In total we paid $27 for this meal (2 meals and a drink) and with the falafel it would have been $31 :/ I wish it wasn't so expensive. The food is great but once you pay more than about ~$20 give or take a few, (in my opinion) its no longer casual fast food. Well, this is from a college student speaking. If thats above your price range, you can always opt for the pita sandwiches and wraps which are $6-7 which is prob what I'll do next time. Another Asotria-ite recommended Shawarmania to me, but it took me a while to try this place out. The last two businesses that had inhabited this space didn't last long. I doubted this one would either, but it stayed, so finally I visited and I've been purchasing my Chicken Shawarma from here ever since. They definitely blow street vendor halals out of the water & their large platters (~11) can feed 2. They took down the sign for it, but ask for their special lamb shank. It's insanely cheap for a large platter, $10. This dish only comes in large because of the size of the lamb shank. The rice in this dish seems to be cooked differently than their shawarma rice; it's so moist and flavorful, I suspect the juices from the lamb shank go into this. And the meat on the lamb shank is fall-off- the-bone tender. When they first started serving this perhaps too much juice was rendered off, but the last time I got this the lamb meat was perfectly flavored. I can taste the cardamom in this. Get their shawarma, either the chicken or their beef and lamb. It's their specialty; their kebabs (overcooked and dry) don't properly represent this place. I can also recommend their falafel, babaganosh and hummus- but the last two sides come in a 4 oz. container for $2.50. A bit pricy in my opinion, when Sabaro's costs around $1.60 for the same amount. But, it's freshly made and sometimes I'm just craving a good babaganosh. I usually come here to pick up. Their Macdonald's-like (yellow, orange and red walls, florescent lighting, Formica tables and plastic Ikea-like chairs) décor doesn't really lend itself to date-night. Their servers have always been really friendly. It almost makes the New Yorker in me skeptical, "whatcha smilin' at? What do you want from me?" I've ordered delivery as well and for the most part been satisfied. They only messed up my order once- so now when I pick up I double check. My husband also likes to order the Philly Cheese Schwarma Pita ($7). The food doesn't taste overly salted, but we usually wake up thirsty in the middle of the night, so drink plenty of water when ordering from here. read more

My favorite place in the hood! This is a great spot for nice traditional Mediterranean bight. My favorite are chicken shawarma sandwich $5.50. It is a fresh pita bread full of freshly made chicken staffed with beautiful Eastern spices. Reach and well balanced. Not spicy not salty - just great! To compare: same amount of food would makes 3 tacos at $3/each at the food truck, but this place has A from health department, which means certified clean. For shawarma, the prices are a little bit on the high side in comparison to your local street carts. We both got the lamb/beef shawarma platter, which comes with yellow rice, salad, two sauces, and pita bread. The shawarma itself was delicious and full of flavor! Tasty no-frills Mediterranean food right next to the Astoria-Ditmars subway. It seems to be more of a late-night crowd since when I went at 6:30PM, I was the only customer. But when I was leaving Astoria around 9, it was packed. Most dishes are around $8-14, depending on pita vs platter. They offer salads for $5 plus another $4 for a protein. They also offer three sizes of dips that range from $1.50-5. I ordered the veggie trio for $9 and was able to substitute the hummus with baba ganoush for free. It came with a cucumber/tomato salad, baba ganoush, and 6 falafels; plus a little bit of onions. I was extremely pleased with my dish and would love to try more of the menu! I'm using my girlfriends account on Yelp to write this review because I myself don't have one. I feel a lot of people that regularly use this website are socially dysfunctional and it becomes more about them or their isolated incident rather than an actual critique of the business itself. I've stopped in to Shawarmania around 8 times since they have opened and ordered delivery twice. Each time I have found the food to be consistent and good, in addition to being reasonably priced. The restaurant itself is very organized and clean. The staff has gone out of their way to make sure I'm happy every single time that I've stopped in. I placed a grub hub order online to take advantage of a coupon and not only did they call me to make sure the order was right, they also asked if I needed any extra sauce or how hot I wanted things. Bottom line is I've ordered food from here 10 times total (including two deliveries) and every time the food was consistent, great, and service was excellent. This place has 26 reviews or so at the moment, with the majority of them being 4 or 5 stars. I recommend you take in that average as an account of how great this place is and how hard the staff tries to please its customers. If you let the 1 or 2 star reviews worry you, maybe read them over and check out that users other reviews before you deem them "credible". Anyone wishing for an entire business to fail just because of their single bad experience obviously has some issues. read more

We went for iftar, there was two Hispanic employees working during that time and they were really understanding of our time to break fast, they lowered their music very low the entire time, they were mindful that the azan would call soon, they added a little extra meat because we fasted, they were trying best to make us happy and comfortable. I live off Astoria Ditmars and every time I passed this restaurant I would pause and then continue on thinking that the logo and decor implied fast food shwarma. Months I resisted. Why??? Why did I wait so long?? Picture this: 10:50pm on a Tuesday night. I'm tired. I'm hungry. I need something to bring home and eat because I am also lazy. I see the loud orange and yellow sign and say... fine. I'm so tired I won't need to finish eating everything anyway. I got the lamb and beef pita. With tax $7.08 I watched it get put together. Everything looked so fresh! And holy huge amount of food stuffed in that pita, Batman. The cashier bagged, winked and threw in a rice pudding for free. My plan was to wait until I got home to eat. But it smelled so good. I couldn't wait. One bite, I said. I'll just take one bite. 10 blocks and two Avenues later and that pita was GONE. The beef and lamb were delicious. The seasonings were so deep in the meat. Awesome. Fresh veggies. Awesome. Hot sauce. YASSSSS. The never judge a book by its cover suggestion applied tonight. This was some of the best I've ever had.
