This shaws in Riverside is so flawed it's not even funny. Let's breakdown their issues in a simplified format: 1. Everything in this store is grossly overpriced 2. The unsupervised kids that work here at night time is ridiculous. They sit at the cash registers in groups. They sing songs together out loud. They do nothing for customers at all. Nothing but a deterrent from wanting to go in here at night. 3. Did I mention that everything is overpriced? You pay a premium price for signature products (generic brand) and pay double prices for brand names items 4. The store is dirty. Maybe they should supervise the night time delinquents and have them clean the store instead of playing with each other all night. 5. In the evening, while the store is still open for business, they close the entrance door and block it with carriages so all people have to enter and exit through the exit only. I would think this is a fire safety hazard but I'm not a fire chief. I only remember 100 people dying in the station nightclub fire due to having exits and entries blocked. In conclusion, this big box store does nothing for our community in any way. While we all struggle with the current president's inflation economy, this store raises the prices even higher. Their only interest is to rape our pockets to pay their ceo's high paid salaries. If you do the math, you would save more money traveling to Warwick, RI or Attleboro, MA to do your grocery shopping at Market Basket where they offer normal prices on all their products and have a much greater selection of products and have employees that actually work for their wages. I know my friends, my family, and all of my neighbors are looking forward to when Market Basket opens in Seekonk, MA - then we will never have to deal with shaws in Riverside again. read more

Great selection of deli meats. The employees working behind the counter here at this Shaw's were also very nice. Helpful, patient and friendly. I had many choices like turkey, ham, pastrami, roast beef, etc...and there were many price points to choose from. The staff was good about getting the right thickness of slice that I wanted. I agree with the other comments about the late night teen activity where the store feels more like a meet up. I stood at a register for a while waiting for help only to hear them rock paper scissors who was going to help me. I've witnessed personal conversations by employees discussing sex, cheating, vaping, driving without a license, and other unprofessional topics that didn't seem to bother their much older coworker who was outside smoking in the shopping cart area. I have had pleasant experiences with produce staff, floral staff, bakery staff but the kids working at night seem to forget their commentary isn't social media, it's real life and annoying. read more

This is the closest grocery store to my home and I will NEVER go there again. In addition to the meat section regularly smelling like spoiled chicken, I've seen at LEAST 4 different dogs wandering the store with their owners there in the 6 weeks. When I've asked the manager why these dogs are allowed, she said "They must be service dogs." I asked her if she asked and she told me no. Both RI and local laws disallow animals in grocery stores, as it is a health hazard. ONLY service animals are excepted - NOT "emotional support animals" or "therapy animals" - ONLY service dogs - period. There aren't that many service dogs in Riverside. I will no longer patronize a food store where the manager allows any random untrained dog to enter the store, crap on the floor, lick the produce, get into fights and barking matches with other dogs (and yes, all three have happened). I live four minutes away from this store, which is why I've been going there for years despite the constant disappointment. Every single time I go there and I'm not even kidding, the main thing I go there for they're out of or just don't carry. I went there just the other day to get hair dye and they don't carry it. They have men's hair dye, but not women's. Why? Makes no sense. I don't think I've ever been to a supermarket that doesn't have hair dye at least a couple to choose from. This is just one example, but I have had many many many examples of this throughout the years, yet I still go thinking maybe this time it will be different, but it never is. there was one time I went shopping and got a whole bunch of things and then when I brought them home, at least five of the items were expired. What a waste of money. I love having a store so close, but it's just terrible. The vegetables are always mushy and disgusting and like I said they never seem to have the main thing that I'm going there for that day. I just can't do it anymore. It's maybe an extra couple of minutes to go to the one in Barrington and so I think that's what I'll do and hopefully I'll have a better experience there. For this being my life long grocery store I refuse to return after school hours as the staff has been taken over by 16 year olds. They bark at you (IF YOU EVEN GET ADDRESSED!) laugh and conversate without even addressing you or welcoming you. I wasnt even told my price, just given a blank stare and then ignored. But 1 thing i do know is where the cashiers are partying this weekend. The actual floor/inventory staff, bakery, and fish/ meat section are always pleasant, clean. So my last experience was just so bad. Now that they added self check. This must have been the cheapest equipment they were able to buy. It goes like this there are paper bags at the machine and the machine sense there weight. So when you pickup a bag to put your groceries it sense that something has been removed from the scale. And what is really screwed up is when it freaks out you put the bag back down. Then it freaks out saying "unexpected item in bagging area". but you haven't even started. Then some nasty person comes over and says you screwed it up. She scans her card to start over. Then this nasty person picks up a bag and the whole rotten process starts over. This is the dirty cavern of a grocery store closest to where I live. I hate the place - but when I need to pick up something real-quick I simply cannot ignore the convenience. Sometimes you don't even realize what kinds of expectations you hold (for things like grocery stores) until you walk into a place that so completely screws up the standard, it makes the previously invisible standard visible. So thank you, Twilight Zone Shaw's, for guiding me to appreciate the good work every other grocery store does to run a somewhat efficient, clean, organized operation. Me: "Shoot, I just need a green pepper, avocado and some cilantro. I'll just run to T.Z.S." Foiled! You can COUNT on a shriveled pepper to pair with your blackened, rotting avocado (insert fruit flies). A bunch of cilantro? Not here. How about in one of those little packages? Mmm... maybe, but it'll be yellow and fail the sniff test every time. Produce Nightmare. "All I need is some yogurt to get me through the week. They can't mess that up." Yes they can. It expired last week. Nutter Butters? Tater Tots? Entertaining Cracker Quartet? They may be safe to eat, but you'll still have to endure FINDING your item in the labyrinth of the bizarre which defies all sense-making. If it's in stock. When you hit the stench of the fish counter in a random center section, you'll know you're 1/3 of the way through T.Z.S. A final shout-out to the motivated staff. Motivated by a very special homemade poster-board sticker system hanging for all customers to admire, in which all cashiers are ranked by their average-items-scanned-per-minute. I got there at 8:54pm one night to grab a few things for my halloween party. This palce is near my house. The only reason I go there is because it's so close. If I wern't so lazy I would go to a real supermarket. This place has it's problems. The cashiers have the personalities of robots. Barely a smile and most times you don't even get that. Their monotone voice makes you think the store is filled with employees that were built out of extra space ship parts. Maybe that's why I can't even get a cell phone signal in the damn store. It's always a lot of fun when I want to call home to see if my girlfriend wants me to pick up anything else. However from all the robots walking around, they appear to screw up my signal and I can't even make a call! I'll continue to go here until the day I move simply because it's so close to me. But I certainly don't look forward to walking in there. I've never liked food shopping. But this particular Shaw's has made me hate food shopping more than I ever thought possible! Twice I've seen flies on the fish and the deli meats. Yummmm. You would think they would close the doors that access the meats. But I guess they seem to forget that a lot. This is one of the old original Shaw's locations. Nothing fancy about this place. It's convenient for me because of the location and it's small...I'm in and out quick. If I had to compare to other Shaw's locations or Stop n Shop I'd have to say it outdated, kinda grungy and not so nice. read more

It's a sm/med size market about 1.5miles from my home so it's convenient for items. I always feel shaws markets are a little pricey I don't know why. They took away your rewards card which is nice I don't have to carry around another piece of plastic on my key chain giving everyone the discounts. The fresh fish section is hit or miss. Sometimes I feel the fish sits there all warm all day and other times it looks amazing. So if your planning your dinner ahead of time put a question mark on that part of list until you get there. The bakery always has nice tasty cookies or cakes for any occasion. Pre order birthday cakes are a breeze ordered a few myself. Sweet frosting not over done and fluffy cake. The fresh fruit/veggie section is on the small side but they do have a nice organic section. A little pricey tho. I rarely rarely get things from their deli. The only reason this store is still open is bc it's the only grocery store in Riverside and is conveniently located. The deli counter is absolutely horrible. There are always long lines and the "take a number" system isn't even usable (you pull a ticket get #64 and the sign says they are on #12) so it's up to the customers to keep track of who is next. Then the employees are annoyed you actually had the nerve to want something from them and there is no care or attention to detail in the work they do. Produce is hit or mostly miss. Very often basic items aren't even available. There are a few long-time, very friendly employees but for the most part the employees are miserable and do not care about customers at all. There is usually only one lane open so long lines to pay are the norm and again, the employees do not care. Finally, it's a WiFi black hole. read more

I was there with my husband right before 6. As we were walking into the building, a man was walking in front of us vaping in the vestibule as he went into the store. I said to him that it was illegal. My husband and I went into the store and picked up things on our list. I walked up to the deli and the same man was in front of the deli vaping. I told him again it was illegal to vape in public. He turned to me and said mind my business. I told him I would not, there were children all around us and he needed to stop. He said not to tell him what to do. My husband walked up and he stopped. The man got his deli meat and walked away. The young man behind the deli counter told me I was unprofessional. I told him I was not working, I could speak, I was not raising my voice or swearing like the vaping man. I got my cheese and walked to get eggs and vaping man was still vaping in another aisle. More words were spoken by this man. As my husband and I were leaving I stopped and spoke to the manager about the boy behind the counter he said OK. He said the boy told him the story, but he had to ask his boss if it was legal to vape in the store, he wasn't sure. I told him I would not support an establishment that does uphold the laws to protect ALL it's patrons. I rarely write reviews for a grocery store. I should give this shaw's 0 star. The manager who is a tall white woman is extremely rude to customers. This is not my first time experience. You always need to check your receipt carefully if you thought that you purchase certain items which are on sale. They put one price tag on two items. These two items are almost identical except labeling of shrimp amount. After I paid money, I checked my receipt carefully and found that the price is not correct. I went to communicate with the manager and got an extremely rude response that the manager almost shout to argue with the price. I then asked her to check the price in the refrigerator and she said that this price is for another item (as I said, these two items are placed next each other and almost identical). I said okay. Please give me another one. I did get the difference after return process. However, I asked her why you do not want to label two items with two different prices and she answered that there is no space for another price tag. Such a ridiculous reason. I just saw that they removed another price tag but still have tag sticker on the shelf. The manager is rude to customer and not honest for the business.
